The Dr gave me the diagnosis, and I was surprised, but the Dr said it was normal, and told me exactly what to do so that my baby would get better. I took my other cat's that have passed away (20yrs, 17yrs) to the MAC and now it's Greyson's turn. I moved to Melrose last year and had to find a vet near me. MAC staff are very nice and very responsive. You do have to call in to book a new pet but it was pretty easy to make an appointment. Prior to the appointment they send you reminders with what you need to bring to ensure they have everything. My cat got fecal exam and bloodwork done. The vet and techs were very nice. The vet called in with results of her tests within a week and provided guidance on next steps. They will take good care of your pet! read more

( Mind you the pet had just been there for a wellness exam. ) The reason why I have a local vet is not only for routine care but also support when a pet that they are familiar with needs to be seen. Not impressed with the attitude of each person I've interacted with on the phone. Incredibly dismissive and rude. I called with a question about my sick puppy and was given no sympathy whatsoever. We were told very flatly to take our puppy to the ER elsewhere and each question was met with annoyance. I was told they had no appointments, even for an emergency. I even called the first second it opened in the morning. I think it would be good practice to leave a slot throughout the day in case of emergencies. I was very bummed out because I was really looking forward to bringing our Frenchie to meet this vet, as we were told she loved Frenchie's. Today I called with another question and once again was met with a dismissive annoyed attitude. Each time I get off the phone with these people I have an icky feeling. Peoples animals are their children and it can be overwhelming to have a new little one to take care for. The vet should be an assuring comfort. We will definitely be finding another vet to take our puppy to moving forward. read more

This place is amazing for our dogs. We have two boxers, one is terrified of the vet because of a traumatic injury when he was a pup and has since associated vets with pain. The entire staff knows about our dogs situation and they are beyond accommodating - my husband frequently helps hold our dog while the vet techs administer shots/blood draws etc. since he is so nervous, and we are allowed to stay with him during every part of the visit. As the owner of a nervous dog, this is so reassuring for us to know both our dog and the staff are comfortable and safe. Communication is great, once you are a patient it's easy to get an appointment and the staff is just overall so friendly and clearly love animals!! Highly recommend. We've trusted them with multiple surgeries and our dogs have always done great. read more

I just started to bring my pup here since my usual vet closed. The week of my old vets closure my dog started bleeding A LOT, not eating, just various signs of being sick. It was so hard to get someone to see him; emergency vets would tell me it wasn't serious enough and regular vets were too booked up. MAC did their best to see my little guy ASAP. I am so glad they were able to take him in as he unfortunately has a mass that is potentially cancerous. Obviously hearing this I have been very distraught. My two Pekingese have been going to MAC since I moved to Boston in 2012. As they are now both 10 years old, we've been to MAC for many reasons. From eye injury's (darn flat faces!) anxiety concerns, gastro concerns, flea issues, ringworm scares, dental surgery, annual visits and my least favorite reason, cancer (MCT). Life can get busy and scary and I'm so glad we found a veterinary practice with multiple DVM's who are personable, understanding and give you options for next step care. I've never felt pressured to get procedures done and I've never felt I didn't understand why something had to be done. In the last decade, there's only been a couple of times they couldn't squeeze us in but they worked closely for follow up care when I had to resort to the emergency room. Yes, vet visits can get expensive and while sometimes I have seen the bill and was shocked at first, I think it's fair to remember the costs to keep a practice open and keep a good accreditation (something that matters to me). We moved a bit farther away this year but that won't sway us from staying with MAC because it's hard to find a good vet practice with friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff and vet techs too! read more

Once you get to see the doctors it's great but be prepared to get a different information from each staff you talk to. One receptionist told me I needed to get my pets booster vaccine in 4 weeks the latest and on the SAME DAY another one tried to schedule the booster for two weeks later. I mentioned my pet was being spayed at another facility and they suggested me getting the blood work done there, they told me to do it at the appointment I had already scheduled and guaranteed the results would come in time for her surgery. Guess what?! The staff I talked to a day before the blood work told me there was no notes of blood work being done and that they couldn't guarantee the results coming out on time for her surgery. On that same appointment my pet was set to have a booster for the Lime vaccine, they canceled the appointment once I questioned the fact that their staff don't communicate with each other. The took the time to call me to have me look for another clinic (after I had already told them I didn't feel safe with all the contradictory information their staff provided). The manager told me I threatened the secretary but what I questioned was how am I going to let my pet have surgery without a blood work? Who is going to be responsible for any issues? Although I no longer have my pet...if I were to adopt another I wouldn't think twice about where i would bring my puppy or kitte. The staff are very friendly and compassionate and they know what they're doing. As in all businesses Sometimes things happen that are unavoidable, like not being on time for an appointment, but emergencies do arise and one can only take care of the ones in most distress first. DO NOT BRING KITTENS/CATS HERE!!! Normally a bad review is just someone being a huge pain but the truth here is that I had a terrible experience and my kitten got sicker by the day due to their extreme negligence. I called to make my newly adopted (9 wk old) kitten an appt before she had even been flown over seas from Aruba. They told me she didn't need to be seen until she was due for her next kitten vaccines. Mistake #1 my cat was 1.7 lbs and was a wild cat in a foreign country that traveled on a plane, I should have brought her immediately to check her wellness. A problem arose a week into having her where I noticed some hair loss around her eye. I went in same day and had a vet take a look. Her name was Dr. Shah. She didn't pick my cat up onto the exam table for longer than a minute total and was saying she was small and it was hard to tell if it was ringworm (which I suspected) then took my kitten in the back for a swab which takes 3 weeks to grow and gave me an eye ointment as a prescription that does not help treat ringworm. They sent me home and I called later letting them know it was spreading to her nose, updating with photos etc. I sent photos Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday I called every day. I had to beg for a call back, didn't get one until Wednesday. The vet was rude and basically told me there's nothing else they can do and I can seek a second opinion if I would like they told me to put a cone on (on a 2 lb cat LOL they don't even make one small enough to stay on) and they told me to go buy flea medicine (advantage 2) which has nothing to do with ringworm still. I was prescribed a bunch of irrelevant things and sitting here waiting and calling while no one told me any useful information and my kitten got worse. She now has lesions all over her body. THEY DO NOT HAVE A WOODS LAMP!! This is a black light that is used in the meantime to see if ringworm can be detected so as it spread I started to google the severity of how spreadable this truly was. It is extremely contagious to both pets and humans and I should've been confining my cat to a limited space with limited toys etc. I told them she was sleeping with me at night in bed and asked if I should stay away from her to which they responded "it's tough". Long story short I took my kitten to another place that specializes in cats only and not only when they used the woods lamp does she have obvious ring worm but she also had visible ear mites which is crazy!!! Because I had noticed these things in her ears before the visit to Melrose Animal Clinic and Dr. Shah literally DID NOT EVEN LOOK IN MY CATS EARS ONCE. She checked off normal for her ears on her exam but the irony is she had the mites from the second we got her. My brother in law actually wrote back to a video and said to get her checked for them because he could tell and the funny part is I told him there's no way because I had just had my kitten checked at Melrose Animal Clinic hours prior. After many attempts of trying to get my kitten the help she needed I went elsewhere and now she is on oral treatment for the ringworm and they stopped all the prescriptions Melrose Animal Clinic had given me. I called to speak to a manager so hopefully this wouldn't happen in the future to another pet owner. She did say she "heard me" and that I could exclusively see other doctors there when I come instead of Dr. Shah. I also asked her why her ears weren't checked and she basically told me the paper says they were even though I was there the whole time and Dr. Shah was afraid to even put her hands on my pet even with the gloves on. I told the manager that I wasn't warned of the spreadability or severity of possible ringworm to which she told me they wouldn't need to tell me how to handle it if her results were not back yet (this is like visibly seeing chicken pox but going out while waiting on confirmation) Her ears were never checked, they don't have the proper modern technology to get ahead on ringworm and I'm out $425 plus now the care at another vet. Needless to say I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

I have been going here for 8 years. The staff is great, the love Max and Peanut the most established. Every doctor is top notch. The communication is second to none. Max has had 2 dent cleanings and a mast cell tumor removed and several aspirations. Peanut gets a twice yearly potty patch done(Turkish angora). Daphne likes it there also. My once ago cats saw them a little. Droopy had to be euthanized due to mouth cancer. TIGGER WAS JUST 18YO so it was just her time. They both received considerate comforting care. Do not recommend taking your pets here. Had a terrible experience recently with a surgery gone wrong. The worst part was that despite the pain and trauma my pet and I were going through, the doctors were rude and accusatory, even though we'd followed all of their instructions and were proactively reaching out for help. I used to recommend this place to everyone because Dr Silverman and all of the vet techs are wonderful, and I'm so disappointed with the turn it's taken in the past few years. I asked for her to call me back to discuss my concerns and her lack thereof and the tech assistant refused to relay the message. i will be filing an official complaint with the department of professional licensure via mass gov because these reviews are concerning............ these are peoples pets, and income that you are messing around with and it is quite pathetic. do better or pick a different profession. you guys are disgusting. read more

I brought my kitten Holly here after going through 2 very good but not personable vet clinics in North Chelmsford where i reside. Immediately i felt in good hands. Everything i had concerns about the technician listened and the vet called himself to check in. I just had her spay there and i was very worried about her going into surgery. Marci and Allison and Linda the office manager all were so comforting. Marci was so compassionate and seemed to know exactly what to say to ease my nerves. The recovery from surgery, awesome. Holly bounced right back and was eating right away that night. They use laser instead of scalpel and the stitches are inside. Extremely well performed and excellent services. I was concerned again about her temperature. They let me come right in, squeezed me in to see get within hours and both Holly and myself are really well. She is healing quicker than i could ever have imagined. They truly treat your pet as their own. read more

Moved here from New Hampshire. Our vet was amazing there - the facilities weren't fancy schmancy but they had all the tech tools and facilities needed to care for pets. AND the fees were reasonable. We now live in Melrose. MAC is quite beautiful from the outside, the interior and facilities are nice. But, we're not a fan of the doctors. I've been overcharged for minor things that I often leave spending $400 - for annual shots, a physical, and tick control - + whatever else gets pushed on me. BTW - I have a cat (MAINE COON). One time they took a small matted hair ball off of her and cahrged me $35 just for the small removal. My vet in NH took care of that Free Of Charge as a courtesy - he even clipped her nails on our visits. Free Of Charge. Ultimately - it's the service that matters. Vets or business owners who go above and beyond with the simplest of things to serve their customers- these are the businesses who I will repeat with. MAC - we are movin' on this year...it's as simple as that. It's not about the veneer - it's about the inside of the business. read more

First off, let me say this: I enormously appreciate their mask policy and their adherence to basic precautions for COVID-19 prevention. It's tough out there, and I'm sure that this has taken a toll on the business and morale of the staff. Secondly, I've only been to MAC a few times as my cat has aged less-than-gracefully, and I hadn't needed a vet before 2020. Also, I sincerely believe that MAC's staff and doctors care about the health of your pets. They aren't mean like some reviewers say - anxious pet owners can overreact. That being said, I've been intermittently uncomfortable with their business practices and quality of care during the time I've been bringing my cat here. My cat has mid-stage kidney disease. This is a well known risk for older cats, compounded by my cat's picky eating. It has been easier to feed her things she will eat rather than throwing out hundreds of dollars of more expensive wet foods and kibbles that she would honestly rather starve than even touch. That's not MAC's fault. What is on them is their inability to recommend any strategies to get her to eat this stuff until their newest vet got a chance to look at her. "Mix it with baby food," something that apparently has been a trick people have used for a long time. Why didn't anyone mention this to me 2 years ago when she was put on the diet in the first place? Additionally, the new doctor diagnosed my cat with corneal ulcers and recommended a specific antibiotic eye drop that has been working very well. I wish that they had recommended this treatment to me a year ago when she started to have issues with her eyes, instead of handing me an antibiotic cream that didn't solve the problem. I thought my cat had eyelids that rolled in due to muscle deterioration and age, but she had a treatable condition that these eyedrops have helped immensely! I'm deeply troubled that their other doctors were unable to address this issue prior to now, which gives me some concern about the quality of care being offered at this facility. They didn't even have a record of the visit in 2021 where this diagnosis was made. I believe that COVID took a large toll on this clinic's operational capacity in 2021. Things seem to be better with my most recent visit. As to their business practices, other critical reviewers get the feeling right about the sticker shock. This place feels exceptionally expensive. I'm not a vet, so I don't want to claim that their diagnostic work and lab costs are higher than necessary, but they will run batteries of tests and you will have to ask about the price structure before you get there or you're going to get a sizable invoice when you walk out. I haven't had a single visit that cost less than $400. My cat is handling a chronic condition and needs regular monitoring, but there are house call vets that charge less than this for bloodwork. I also had significant difficulty getting a prescription diet approved, which is a new and disappointing development. They REALLY want you to use their affiliate pharmacy, "MyVetStoreOnline," a name that sounds like it's straight out the spam inbox. I got a text message from someone claiming to be an employee of MAC, but without their number coming from MAC's clinic or even from a local area code. I also received an email saying that an account had been created for me on this service, which i did not request nor did I authorize anyone from MAC to do. The representative's text was a long speech about not being able to trust the quality of 3rd party online pharmacies while signing me up for a 3rd party online pharmacy I'd never heard of. The irony of this certainly did not escape me, but perhaps does for the owners of this business. I was able to speak to the representative (a remote worker who claims their job is to process authorizations for veterinary prescriptions) who assured me that she was an employee of MAC. I had called the clinic and nobody seemed to know who this woman was or just didn't want to tell me about the inner workings of their approval process. I'm confused as to why their authorization processor is also in charge of selling people on their affiliate pharmacy, or why the authorization for my cat's diet took almost a week to process. I'm choosing to believe that the clinic was too busy to send my authorization documents to this individual in a timely fashion, rather than intentionally slowing the process and blaming it on a problem at the retailer I chose to buy the cat food from. The staff at the clinic also claimed to not have a scanner to send me copies of authorizations for veterinary diets, which was an outright lie - I received a scan of the authorization after waiting on the phone for 20 minutes. Your pet will receive OK care at MAC. The new aggressive direction for the online pharmacy marketing, the high cost of services, and the communication disconnects make me wonder if it's worth returning as my pet continues to age and her care requires more management. read more

Can't say enough about the level of care my dog received over the years from Melrose Animal Clinic. Our dog received care from Melrose Animal Clinic for over 12 years. We even continued to bring him there 8 years after moving out of Melrose. Most recently, the doctors and staff were really great throughout my dog's final weeks. Dr. Kasow in particular was so kind and understanding about both our dog's needs and ours. He was almost 13 years old and was having trouble getting around because of arthritis, and in the early summer he had lost quite a bit of weight. I took him in to see Jocelyn and she was so sweet and gentle with him and very kind to me. She called me the next day to tell me the bloodwork was indicative of something very wrong with his spleen. She took quite a bit of time to talk through the options with me, including a very honest and frank discussion about what realistic outcome might result from each. She was so gentle and kind in her approach, and helped me determine the right approach for my dog and my family. Because of his age and advanced arthritis, and the likelihood that surgery would not improve his condition much, I opted to forgo treatment. She was very supportive of my decision and told me to "love him and spoil him, and give him some ice cream"! She was so helpful and had just the right things to say to help me feel better, and I felt comfortable with the decision. A few weeks later it was clear that he was suffering and the time had come. We were able to get an appointment that morning, and when we brought him in (me in tears and sobbing) the entire staff was so respectful and nice. We were immediately brought into an exam room and we got to spend some time alone with him. The vet tech came in and was petting him and telling him how handsome he is! When the time came, they were very sensative to our desire to be with him and it was all very peaceful and loving. After he was gone we again had the opportunity to spend some time with him. At no point did we feel rushed or that we were imposing... everyone was so helpful and kind and supportive. I wish I could have told at the time how much it meant to us... read more

After reading the favorable comments on Yelp and a couple of other websites, I decided to give Melrose Animal Clinic a try after adopting a new dog. Previously, I had been taking my cat to MSPCA Angell but it became rather inconvenient after moving to Malden. The first thing that impressed me was how clean the clinic was. The front desk staff were very friendly and loved Sapphire (a rottie mix). I waited about 5 minutes before being seen by the vet tech, who was also very nice to me and the dog. The Doctor was friendly (you see the theme now?) and knowledgeable. She carefully explained to me what preventative care would be good for the dog and was happy to answer the myriad of questions I had for her as a new dog owner. From this first visit, I'd strongly recommend Melrose Animal Clinic to anybody who lives in the area. Parking can be a little difficult to find, so I'd recommend getting there a bit earlier to search for a spot. read more

On January 21, 2017 my pet was seen at Melrose Animal Clinic for his Lyme and Leptospirosis Vaccines. At check out, I was informed that the tech had negligently given the oral kennel vaccine via injection. We were told we had nothing to worry about. After talking to someone on the HomeAway emergency hotline about his symptoms, we were encourage to take our pet to the emergency clinic later that night. Our bills totaled over $700 and he was put on multiple medications. MAC informed us that they would reimburse us for the bills, but it was a year long battle resolved only about a month ago (April 2018). I was told that I would only be reimbursed if I signed an agreement that stated that Melrose Animal Clinic was not responsible and released them from liability. I refused. After much negotiation, we compromised on the rewording of the agreement and I was finally reimbursed more than a year later. I understand that mistakes are made, but my pet was given not only the wrong vaccine in general but also was administered it the wrong way. We do not know what long term effects this has caused our sweet pup. I urge you to not bring your pet here and avoid having to go through the nightmare our family did. read more

My family has brought all of its pets to Melrose Animal Clinic since I was child. They were a family-oriented, not-too-expensive animal hospital with great care and kind staff. We've put down two pets in years past and my family always felt the staff were honest and upfront. However, in recent years the owners have expanded and renovated the office. The prices are now very high; certainly higher than the other hospitals in the area I've quoted for services. The veterinarians and technicians are also quick to push the treatments they recommend, and are very rigid, even condescending, when you ask for other options. The office also has a very commercial feel now. Even their hold music is trying to sell you extra stuff you don't need. Give them a call - I'm sure they'll put on hold for a long time and you'll get to hear it. I can understand why people think they are getting great care as the staff are very confident, but in reality it is over-priced and more interested in getting back the money it spent on the renovation. I now bring my pets to another animal hospital and the care is of great quality. read more

I have taken my pug, Pugzy to Melrose Animal for 10+ years. I always got an appointment when I needed one, I got call backs when I left messages. They helped me keep Pugzy as healthy and comfortable after suffering from a collapsed trachea for years. When I finally had to make the decision to put Pugzy to rest the office staff and Dr. Surgan helped put me at ease. Dr. Surgan was very caring and supportive during this heartbreaking decision. We have been going to Melrose animal clinic for about 10 years now. First with our dog child Brooklyn and now with our new child Penny. They have ALWAYS been amazing, friendly, and kind. RESPONSIVE, CARING AND PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT FROM THE ENTIRE TEAM After suffering through lackluster service at another vet practice (also reviewed on Yelp), we recently switched to Melrose Animal Clinic and have been extremely impressed with the responsive, professional service we're getting from Dr. Shah, Bianca and the entire team. After waiting 3 days to see a vet at our prior clinic, we called Melrose and they were able to see our injured dog that night (yay for late hours!) We saw Dr. Shah who immediately diagnosed the severity of our dog's injury (full ACL tear), walked us through the surgery options and didn't balk when I asked for a cost breakdown. She also spent 20 minutes with me explaining options for post-op physical therapy with referrals for *other* clinics (ie, swim therapy, etc.) In my 8 years as a dog owner, I've never spent that much time with a vet before! It's clear they care about their patients' care and schedule appointments with adequate time to consult on any issues. Since ACL surgeries are fairly standardized procedures, I called a vet referral hospital and they quoted us $500 more than Melrose. In the end, Melrose billed us $500 less than their initial quote so we wound up saving approximately $1,000 having the procedure done at their practice. Our dog is recovering really well and we've been getting check-in calls from Bianca, the vet technician, with tips and coaching as we face another 2-4 weeks of limited activity for our dog.
