BluePearl Pet Hospital - the last picture of our Bear

    BluePearl Pet Hospital

BluePearl is a chain of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals in dozens of states across the…read morecountry. This particular BluePearl location was formerly called the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center (PVSEC). It has a 24-hour emergency department and also offers specialty services such as cardiology, neurology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology, surgeries, and others. For probably over a decade, I have taken my cats and dog here. Below are details about some visits in the past couple of years: Story #1: In January 2024, my husband and I noticed that our dog Olive had an unsteady gait on all four legs, completely stopped eating food and drinking water, and had urinary incontinence. An emergency veterinarian at BluePearl did a physical exam and an x-ray for Olive. The veterinarian diagnosed Olive as having hip dysplasia. She gave Olive an injection of methadone, prescribed a short course of gabapentin, and told us to follow up with our regular veterinarian in several days. This emergency visit cost $608. My husband and I thought that this diagnosis and treatment were incorrect, so on the next morning, we returned to BluePearl. A different veterinarian performed a more thorough physical exam, and she noticed that Olive's eyes were blind. An ophthalmologist said that Olive's optic nerves were inflamed. I requested a neurology consult. The neurologist admitted Olive to the ICU. He ordered vital signs, laboratory tests, an IV catheter and medications, a ventilator, an x-ray, an MRI, etcetera. Hours later, the neurologist told us that Olive had "by far the worst scenario": brain cancer that had spread through much of her brain. Later that day, a different veterinarian euthanized Olive. The total cost for the emergency department, ICU, and euthanasia was $5,688. -------------- Story #2: In February 2024, my cat Nika strained to urinate and had red urine, so we took her to BluePearl. A veterinarian performed laboratory tests and an ultrasound. Several hours hours later, the veterinarian diagnosed Nika with kidney disease and a urinary tract infection, and she ordered an antibiotic and a pain medication. The total cost for this visit was significantly higher than the estimate and was $1,225. In March 2024, Nika's regular veterinarian could not determine what was causing her days-long inappetence and constipation, so he referred us to BluePearl's emergency department. At BluePearl, the employees at the front desk said that a veterinarian would be assigned to Nika in a couple of hours, but the wait time was actually several hours. Around 3 AM, a veterinarian called me and said that we had previously consented to spending $4,000-6,000, but we had actually been told $2,000-4,000. The veterinarian performed laboratory tests and an abdominal ultrasound, and she ordered IV fluids, an enema, and several medications for nausea and vomiting, appetite, etcetera. We kept Nika in the hospital for two nights for a total cost of $4,046. I thought that the veterinarian performed the correct tests and treatments and that she gave the correct post-discharge instructions. In the following months, we took Nika here for a couple more visits. Generally across all of our visits, the wait times were long, the final costs were significantly higher than the estimates that we had been given, and BluePearl has not always communicated test results to our regular veterinarian or even to me, so we wasted that money. As a result, we will still consider using BluePearl for after-hours emergencies, but I feel eager to try a couple other veterinarian hospitals that are opening near me.

We have Pet insurance but she insisted there was nothing we could do for a tumor in the brain. Alas! We found a doctor in New Jersey that can remove tumors. So we drove 5 hours to find out there was No Tumor was in his brain!! We were lied to and almost murdered our King for no reason! I'm beyond pissed. We will be in after our New Jersey vet visit to discuss this in person. Face to face. Do better. Be better, "Doctor." zero 0

Both the tech and doctor were absolutely amazing with my dog. You could tell they truly loved dogs and their jobs. I was given all the options and not pressured into anything. I chose to do the testing just to be certain. Thankfully, there was nothing major wrong with my dog and we were prescribed some meds to support him while he got better. It seemed to be the best experience you could have when having to take your pet in for an emergency. Hopefully, I don't ever have an another emergency, but I am relieved to know I have a nice place close by to take him if I have to. Dr. Braun was amazing. She was genuine, patient, friendly, and it was obvious being a vet was her true calling! She gave me her thoughts and told me my options but didn't pressure me into anything. I felt confident that I could trust her opinion. The tech we started with was also super friendly and caring! I wish I could remember her name. She attentively listened to me rattle off everything I could think of and was awesome with Finn. I was happy with absolutely everyone we interacted with from start to finish. Everyone was GENUINELY friendly.

Based only on other reviews and a "gut feeling, I went with PetVet 364 Cranberry and am so happy I did. Everyone I interacted with there was amazing - from the person who answered the phone and made my appointment (Natalie I think), the Vet's assistant/tech (Ashley), to the vet herself - all of them were patient, caring, friendly, understanding, and genuinely listened intently to me as we discussed my cats needs. Also, they have this amazing special "cat room" that was probably even more cat friendly than my home LOL. So rather than going into a sterile exam room with a metal table, I was able to bring my cat into a warm comfortable room equipped with cat toys, cat condos, litter box and treats! That instantly put my cat (AND me) at ease which is critical - esp if you have anxious pets! All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better experience for me and my pets and we plan to stick with this wonderful vet clinic in the future. If I could give 6 star rating, I would

The receptionists are friendly and welcoming. The Drs and assistants are so warm and kind, it makes the scary experience of needing a vet right away so much more calming. I can tell they care about my dog and me and treated her like their own. The rooms are cozy with couches and a TV and help to destress my dog (and me). The Dr and assistant sat on the floor with me and my dog (so personal and caring) and listened to everything I said so attentively and patiently. They were knowledgeable and thorough. My beagle is 11 and I've had some bad experiences with cold, callous veterinarians in the past, but I'm so thankful I have somewhere I feel I can depend on when I need it. 10/10

She always does an excellent job with our dogs. When we had two dogs at one time it would take about 4 to 4 1/2 hours to finish both dogs. Now that we are down to only having one dog it takes about two hours for a full grooming, which includes his bath, a full haircut, shaving down about 5 inches of hair for his summer cut, and doing his nails. When I read reviews that mention this Salon being dirty with pet hair and smelling like dogs, I think to myself, what do you think is going on here? She is grooming, both cats and dogs! Of course there is going to be pet hair! If you want an overpriced Shishi Hair Salon that mimics your own then maybe this is not the place for you or your pet. As you may be aware, all dogs and cats are cooperative during the grooming process. So while Groom do take the utmost care to be gentle with pets, there are occasional times when there could be a Nick or a cut from a clipper during toenail clipping or regular grooming. This has only happened to us maybe twice in 20 years, but accidents do happen when pets are moving about on the grooming table. All little knicks have been minor and she has always informed us if this ever happened. We have always been pleased with our dogs' end result. I definitely recommend Cameo for grooming!
