We sadly had to put our 15+ year old cat down. MedVet Staff made the whole process more bearable by seeing us right away in a private suite, we stayed in the entire time, also includes a private exit. You can dim the lights, leave a message about your animal to the staff and a farewell and just spend the last moments with your loved one before the nurse and doctor comes in. They leave the timing completely up to you so you don't feel rushed. They use a call light system to alert when you are ready for each stage of the process. The hardest parts of having a fur baby is the goodbye, the staff at MedVet were full of compassion, consideration and understanding. They even sent us a condolences card which wasn't necessary but very sweet and comforting to get while we waited for her ashes, especially as the holidays grow closer. If the time has come to send your loved one over the rainbow bridge, our family highly recommend their services. Thank you MedVet and Staff for making one of our hardest days as comfortable and streamlined as possible. We love our Princess Panda and are grateful to you all for helping us through it.

Example of their stitched up work that doesn't look that great, using blood and him passed away

As I'm literally sitting here crying my eyes out, reading all the negative reviews....i wish I would have chosen a different place to take my dog. For starters I took my dog to my vet, who told me he needed emergency surgery. they told me to go to med vet. If only I could go back in time 5 days when I pulled in the parking lot and my husband said we should take him somewhere else...only bc I have been to this vet before and I already know about the crazy prices at med vet. Well my dog and I go in, they go over everything with me and I tell them let's do the surgery....well the surgery didn't happen until the following afternoon bc they said his kidney levels were way to low to proceed. Cut to after surgery, I come to get my dog- they bring him out literally covered in his poop I'm sure he was laying in and he smelled so bad! The cone they brought him out in was covered in I don't know what, maybe throw up since it was the cone I brought him in and he had been throwing up nonstop before coming there from the last vet. Anyway I pay my almost 12k bill, which looking at some of my statement that I still haven't fully went through bc I've been dealing with my sick dog...some things I feel I shouldn't have paid for like a almost $800 phone call as they call it a dvm. They told me Im paying that bc there wasn't a doctor on call, and the room wasn't ready for surgery.....yet they knew the surgery was coming bc he was there for 1.5 days before the surgery even took place. Anyway back to it...I took my dog home- first day he was ok, literally slept...but was panting like crazy And coughing . Second day it started going all down hill...he started oozing from his stitches, but not that bad until like the 5th day. The 3rd day he wasn't bleeding at all, 4th day started again- the the 5th day it was poring out. Mean time I did call before and I was told I could bring him in, but of course If they would have to do anything I would have to pay for it. I mean in my opinion I just paid yall 12k, If anything I shouldn't have to pay anything. Anyway we are back at the vet on day 5- I was told he was in very bad shape, that they wouldn't even release him back in my care- told me he most likely had bacteria in his stomach talked about a lot of things that he would most likely need another surgery that would cost me another $10,000 or more and also gave me the option of putting him down. I mean, I just spent $12,000. Do you really want more for me of course you do because I felt like you guys were money hungry and I can tell that by my itemized bill. I'm just very upset with the entire situation because I ended up putting my dog down who wasn't even hardly seven years old because I was price gouged and couldn't afford another surgery. Now I have to rely on if I get him back since I read a bad review about you guys losing someone else's dog during cremation. I just hope nothing goes wrong with his cremation.

When this mischievous fellow swallowed some string down like a piece of spaghetti, the folks at MedVet Pittsburgh were extremely helpful. Given the risk of bowel obstruction, our vet instructed us to seek emergency care. We immediately took Voodoo to another large PGH-area veterinary ER where he was triaged but we were told that they were "at capacity." They instructed us to seek medical care elsewhere ASAP. Everyone at MedVet was very kind. They were upfront about wait times (8-10 hours) and that they might not be able to induce vomiting since it had now been a few hours since the ingestion. But they took him back right away and set him up in a kennel with a litter box and some water. They examined him and discussed options before pursuing workup or treatment, and kept us updated at each step. Fortunately, they were able to induce vomiting after X-rays, and he eventually expelled the offending string. We ended up being in and out in less than 4 hours. The bill was just over $600, which included the medications to induce vomiting and 3 view X-rays. We are so grateful for the care provided by Dr. Ielapi and the staff that night! I know they were very busy but they still took excellent care of Voodoo. Though as great as they were, we are keeping him away from strings so that we don't have to meet again.

My ten-year-old, very healthy, German Shepherd, Kayda, started experiencing issues with her hind end about four months ago. It started with her just becoming a bit wobbly while walking. We got her started with treatments immediately. At first, our vet thought it was just age and some ortho issues. Hip dysplasia and arthritis (which she does have as she is ten). We did non-invasive diagnostic testing. We did Librela shots. we did oral NSAIDs and pain medication. We did physical therapy. And while it didn't particularly seem like she was in pain, the strength in her back legs was clearly getting worse over the past few months despite our efforts. About a week ago, she took a turn for the true worst. What was once weakness in the back legs was now near complete paralysis. She was suffering mentally. She was tired. I thought it was the end and I would have to make the decision that I have been dreading for the last ten-plus years. I have heard that when it is time, you'll know. She will tell you. But she still didn't. She told me she was frustrated. She told me she was tired. But she did not tell me she was ready to be done. So, I listened to her. This past Monday morning, in a last-ditch effort, I called the MedVet Emergency Department. My incredible experience literally started the second that I made that phone call. Upon arrival to MedVet, I carried Kayda in, and they let us go back to a room right away instead of sitting in the waiting room once they saw Kayda's condition (and mine). A very nice tech came in, got Kayda's history, and took her back to be evaluated by the neurosurgeon, Dr. Jacob Leslie. Probably the only "negative" thing I would say about this whole experience was that when they took her back, they said they were going to get her vitals and be right back. I work in the medical field, so I do know what "be right back" means, so I was expecting it to take a bit of time. However, she was back there for about forty-five minutes, and I was panicking. Luckily, a woman came in and said they didn't forget about me, and Kayda would be back shortly, which she was. It turns out when they were back there, they did a whole work-up, ultrasound, EKG, etc. It just would have been a little more settling in such a time of uncertainty to know that it was going to be a little while. But she was safe and receiving care. They brought her back in and with her came the neurosurgeon, Dr. Jacob Leslie. When I say incredible, I truly mean it from the bottom of my heart. He is clearly brilliant, however is able to word and explain things for those of us who are not as familiar with canine neuro issues, how it all works, what to expect, possible other issues, all of it. He was calm. He was respectful. He was empathetic. He was realistic. He possesses every single quality you would hope to have in a doctor, whether it be for yourself, a loved one, or a beloved pet. He explained in depth what the possible issues could be causing her hind lameness, and that an MRI would be necessary to determine the cause. When I say this man explained every single thing that would be done, could be done, could happen, should happen, etc., I mean in DEPTH. Really took his time to make sure we fully understood. Answered our million questions Was beyond patient and understanding. On Monday, Kayda had her MRI. It showed a ruptured disc and possible infection. He gave us the prognosis of recovery which was great, and recommended surgery. We had full trust in him. I trusted him with her life. We took Kayda in on Tuesday for her laminectomy. She stayed overnight in the ICU, and we were able to pick her up Wednesday afternoon. They called when she went in for procedures. They called when she was out. They called to update us. The doctor called multiple times. They were beyond accommodating and thoughtful and understood our stress. I cannot adequately thank the staff at MedVet. The words "grateful" and "thankful" feel like they poorly describe the feeling I have. Indebted. They have saved Kayda's life. They restored her quality of life. They gave her the fighting chance to do what she loves again. Run around and be independent and do whatever she pleases. She is the most resilient, strongest, healthiest girl, and I know she will be a champ about this, just like everything else. The road to recovery will be taxing and frustrating, but Dr. Leslie is confident that she will regain function and it will be worth it. There is quite literally nothing I wouldn't do for Kayda, and that is exactly how this team made me feel. That they would do anything they possibly could to help her. And I think that was the best part. I knew she was in great hands that truly cared about her. If anyone needs impeccable care, emergency or not, absolutely highly consider going to MedVet. Thank you, Dr. Leslie, and the neurosurgery team! You all encompass what it means to be exceptional providers.

Our 6 year old lab was suffering so much so quickly (not able to eat or drink, facial paralysis, unable to walk correctly, lethargic) and our normal vet had no clue, Avets turned us away days earlier because they were full. We found Rivers Vet and they referred us to MedVet in McMurray. That was such a blessing. They moved quick to get him triaged and on fluids. They took the time to get his full history and try to find the root cause of his symptoms. They explained the costs and charges well. Yes, it's a lot of money but we made the choice to keep fighting to get our boy help. Their neurologist, Dr Leslie, was able to find and see what no others could. We still don't have all the answers on Toby's condition yet, but having the peace of mind knowing our boy is in trustworthy hands is exactly what we all needed. Thank you Med Vet of McMurray and Dr. Leslie!!!!!

BluePearl is a chain of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals in dozens of states across the…read morecountry. This particular BluePearl location was formerly called the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center (PVSEC). It has a 24-hour emergency department and also offers specialty services such as cardiology, neurology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology, surgeries, and others. For probably over a decade, I have taken my cats and dog here. Below are details about some visits in the past couple of years: Story #1: In January 2024, my husband and I noticed that our dog Olive had an unsteady gait on all four legs, completely stopped eating food and drinking water, and had urinary incontinence. An emergency veterinarian at BluePearl did a physical exam and an x-ray for Olive. The veterinarian diagnosed Olive as having hip dysplasia. She gave Olive an injection of methadone, prescribed a short course of gabapentin, and told us to follow up with our regular veterinarian in several days. This emergency visit cost $608. My husband and I thought that this diagnosis and treatment were incorrect, so on the next morning, we returned to BluePearl. A different veterinarian performed a more thorough physical exam, and she noticed that Olive's eyes were blind. An ophthalmologist said that Olive's optic nerves were inflamed. I requested a neurology consult. The neurologist admitted Olive to the ICU. He ordered vital signs, laboratory tests, an IV catheter and medications, a ventilator, an x-ray, an MRI, etcetera. Hours later, the neurologist told us that Olive had "by far the worst scenario": brain cancer that had spread through much of her brain. Later that day, a different veterinarian euthanized Olive. The total cost for the emergency department, ICU, and euthanasia was $5,688. -------------- Story #2: In February 2024, my cat Nika strained to urinate and had red urine, so we took her to BluePearl. A veterinarian performed laboratory tests and an ultrasound. Several hours hours later, the veterinarian diagnosed Nika with kidney disease and a urinary tract infection, and she ordered an antibiotic and a pain medication. The total cost for this visit was significantly higher than the estimate and was $1,225. In March 2024, Nika's regular veterinarian could not determine what was causing her days-long inappetence and constipation, so he referred us to BluePearl's emergency department. At BluePearl, the employees at the front desk said that a veterinarian would be assigned to Nika in a couple of hours, but the wait time was actually several hours. Around 3 AM, a veterinarian called me and said that we had previously consented to spending $4,000-6,000, but we had actually been told $2,000-4,000. The veterinarian performed laboratory tests and an abdominal ultrasound, and she ordered IV fluids, an enema, and several medications for nausea and vomiting, appetite, etcetera. We kept Nika in the hospital for two nights for a total cost of $4,046. I thought that the veterinarian performed the correct tests and treatments and that she gave the correct post-discharge instructions. In the following months, we took Nika here for a couple more visits. Generally across all of our visits, the wait times were long, the final costs were significantly higher than the estimates that we had been given, and BluePearl has not always communicated test results to our regular veterinarian or even to me, so we wasted that money. As a result, we will still consider using BluePearl for after-hours emergencies, but I feel eager to try a couple other veterinarian hospitals that are opening near me.

I took my dog to blue Pearl yesterday because I believe that she was choking. I thought originally…read moreshe may be got a hold of a baby rabbit in our fenced in yard and ate it and was choking on it. I wasn't quite sure because I let my dogs out in my fenced in yard like most people do with dogs with a fenced in yard. They were outside for maybe 25-30 minutes. I go outside to give them some food and to see if any of them wanted to come in and then I noticed my corgi had blood coming down her mouth all on her chest down her legs as if she was in a fight. But I realized she was choking, and I couldn't quite figure out why there was blood if she was choking. So I rushed her to blue pearl because they were the closest and my family vet had their number listed as an emergency. I take my dog there and we get there about 11 PM, they take us into a room, check her temperature and her weight and then take her in the back and make us go to the waiting room, which I thought was odd to not let you stay with your dog in a vet room like most vets usually do. But anyway, we go out to the waiting room and we wait. They keep her in the back. Up until about two in the morning. They call us back to a room and the doctor says just for bloodwork it's automatically about 1400 which is whatever I care about my dog, but like how have you guys had her for all this time and all you did was bloodwork? So they come in to tell me that so far I have to pay this much and that it'll be more after they do x-rays and I was like I told you guys when I came in she has something stuck in her throat and I'm just thinking to myself why wouldn't you have already done the x-rays as it is? If this is considered an emergency, why isn't it being treated as such?. But anyway the vet says she's gonna go do the x-rays and be back in about an hour so an hour goes by. It was three something in the morning at this point and she comes back and basically says they can't diagnose my dog, but believe that it was because she was choking on something, but can't give me a definitive answer can't diagnose my dog, but they said that they wanted to keep her overnight to evaluate her and just to keep her overnight Was pushing $5000 and there wasn't even a diagnosis. I get emergency dog hospitals cost more because it's an emergency, but this was excessive and to pay that much money and still not know what's wrong with my dog felt like I was being robbed. They came in to show me the estimate and told me they could keep her overnight and I decided when they came back in the room to let them know, I will be taking her home to monitor her myself. Then they said well we have to write up a new estimate then. Then they bring in the new total which ended up being $1700. And the paperwork I got sent home with said she was undiagnosed, and that they were unsure of what was wrong with her. I felt like they were more worried about money than actually caring for the dog. I feel like they did not do everything necessary to check her. It doesn't make sense why they had her for 3+ hours and all they did was bloodwork and to come to me to basically ask permission to do x-rays literally when I told you people from the get go that my dog Was choking and was coughing and gagging. Why wouldn't you automatically do an x-ray from the start? It wasn't treated as an emergency. And to try and charge me all that money and not be able to diagnose my dog is insane. If you weren't able to help me, you should've simply have stated that you can't diagnose her cause you don't know what the problem is and I could've took her somewhere else you wasted my time and $2000 for a dog that is still sick. The only thing they did tell me was that they could see a little object in her intestines, but it seems to be moving on its own. So clearly it's not for sure that it will but I wasn't given any answers other than that. I'm just very displeased with the care that my dog received when it comes to not knowing what's wrong with her and charging the amount that you charge. Literally nothing was done. All I got was sent him with gabapentin and an undiagnosed dog and $1700 later. If all you were gonna do was keep her overnight to keep her on oxygen and to monitor her how did that reach 5000 and how would that have got you a diagnosis? It just seems to me like they are about money and only money. This is the first time in my whole 31 years of life where I've ever taken a dog to a vet and spent a lot of money to be told, she's undiagnosed. I can't believe it. Horrible experience. The only thing positive I could say is the staff seem nice but I guess whenever they're racking up your bill and charging you as much as they are id be nice too. I just feel like they lacked care for my dog, because if you are truly doing everything that you can, and you're charging me as much as you are, I expect my dog to have a diagnosis and to tell me how to fix or what needs to be done for her to be better not given the runaround.

Both the tech and doctor were absolutely amazing with my dog. You could tell they truly loved dogs and their jobs. I was given all the options and not pressured into anything. I chose to do the testing just to be certain. Thankfully, there was nothing major wrong with my dog and we were prescribed some meds to support him while he got better. It seemed to be the best experience you could have when having to take your pet in for an emergency. Hopefully, I don't ever have an another emergency, but I am relieved to know I have a nice place close by to take him if I have to. Dr. Braun was amazing. She was genuine, patient, friendly, and it was obvious being a vet was her true calling! She gave me her thoughts and told me my options but didn't pressure me into anything. I felt confident that I could trust her opinion. The tech we started with was also super friendly and caring! I wish I could remember her name. She attentively listened to me rattle off everything I could think of and was awesome with Finn. I was happy with absolutely everyone we interacted with from start to finish. Everyone was GENUINELY friendly.

If you've ever had a cat with urinary issues, you know the soundtrack: panic-googling at 2am,…read moresuspicious litter box inspections, and a furry little patient who acts like you personally invented veterinary medicine. That's been our life with Cinder "Block" Jones for the last two years. ‍ We recently brought Cinder to UrgentVet and were lucky enough to see Dr. Amanda Zetwo and her team, and I genuinely cannot say enough wonderful things about them. The clinic was absolutely swamped that night. Phones ringing, emergency calls coming in nonstop, the whole place running like a tiny animal ER command center. And somehow, despite all of that chaos, every single staff member we interacted with was calm, kind, funny, and incredibly attentive. Cinder has never been a fan of vet visits. He's not aggressive or difficult, just deeply offended by the entire concept. The staff handled him so gently and respectfully that I honestly wanted to cry a little. We brought him in using a tote instead of a crate, and they made a point to keep him in the tote whenever possible because they could tell it made him feel safer. They only took him out when absolutely necessary and let him go right back afterward. That level of consideration meant everything to us. And Dr. Zetwo? Truly phenomenal. For the first time in what feels like forever, we left a vet appointment feeling informed instead of overwhelmed. She explained Cinder's complicated urinary issues so clearly and simply that even my stress-fried brain could follow along. More importantly, she gave us genuinely productive recommendations that have already helped him immensely. No fear tactics, no immediate push toward surgery, no upselling. Just thoughtful, practical care from someone who clearly knows what they're doing and actually cares about the outcome. One recommendation was even a calming cat diffuser, which I lovingly refer to as "cat incense," and honestly? Tiny wizard smoke. Somehow effective. Cinder remains dramatic, but now with ambiance. In 14 years of owning pets, I have never felt this comforted, respected, or reassured by a veterinary team. Every person there treated our sweet boy like he mattered, even during an incredibly busy emergency night, and that kind of compassion sticks with people. Thank you to Dr. Zetwo and the entire UrgentVet staff for being fearless, knowledgeable, compassionate, and so unbelievably good to our beloved little urinary gravel goblin, Cinder "Block" Jones.

No one chooses to be at an urgent care vet, but sometimes that's just how it goes. It's an off hour…read moreor a weekend and your regular vet, though ours is pretty amazing about getting us in for urgent sick appointments during open hours, is just going to be closed. We regularly go to another urgent care in the South Hills during these situations and are very happy with their care, but this new spot has complementary hours to that one -- so, when my dog was having gastrointestinal problems for just a little too long and I felt he needed to be seen, we gave UrgentVet a try. They are just a couple of months old and located in the upper part of the Siena complex, near Hello Bistro and Nothing Bundt Cakes to name a couple. I like that you can go online and reserve an appointment time. I reserved one just half an hour from the time my dog resumed his GI distress, and off we went. Your reservation time is not a hard and fast commitment to see you at that time. Other clients may come in with a pet in a worse condition than yours, or they just might be getting very backed up with appointments or walk-ins which they also accept. That's the nature of urgent/emergency medicine and I always understand that walking in. We registered at the kiosk and sat down, and within just a few minutes were taken to a room. We weren't immediately asked what was going on with my dog which I thought was a little unusual, though I certainly would have spoken up if I was highly concerned about his urgency. The facility is very bright and clean. We waited about half an hour until our tech came back in and spent a thorough amount of time asking about my dog's situation and medical history. We then waited another 20 to 30 minutes before we saw the vet, who was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel highly confident in her assessment and recommendations. She suggested a full blood workup especially since my dog has early stage kidney disease. I was curious about whether we should consider abdominal x-rays in case he had gotten into something I was not aware of, but his situation did not seem to warrant them and she said if I was choosing between the two financially she would recommend the bloodwork first. The tech came back with an estimate for the recommended testing and I wanted to have the full blood workup done, so we proceeded with that. I was grateful that the vet wasn't pushing all of the tests at once to charge as much as possible, and that the tech was willing to do the blood draw right there in the room with me present to avoid stressing my dog further. She was highly competent in drawing his blood gently and quickly. I couldn't believe how fast they ran that bloodwork in house. It was only about 10 minutes before the vet came back to discuss the results with me, which showed well functioning kidneys at this time and a few markers that indicated digestive distress, informing our treatment of antibiotics, a shot of Pepcid and a bag of sub Q fluids. She spent a lot of time going over things such as how to handle his diet as he's recovering and never once did I feel rushed even as a significant crowd was beginning to build in the waiting room (which I knew as I had briefly exited to use the restroom). The tech came back and administered the Pepcid shot and fluids also with me in the room, which was very comforting to both me and my dog. Once we checked out, somewhere between two and 2 1/2 hours after arriving, the tech also was very thoughtful about walking us to the exit to make sure there was a clear path through the narrow hallway, away from other anxious dogs who might be waiting. She also incredibly ran through the parking lot in pouring rain as I was driving away, just catching me in time to bring me a sweater my dog wore in that I almost left behind. Our total was about $800 for the exam, extensive bloodwork, fluids, an injection and antibiotics. I've gone through approximately this exact same visit at another local urgent care and it was about $300 more, so while that sounds like a lot of money and it is, it's quite fair for the market. They also have some thoughtful little conveniences such as a Keurig, bottled water and snacks in the waiting room and a phone charging station out there as well in case you came bolting to the vet feeling stressed and didn't remember any kind of charger (my phone was at 2% when we left, so that person is me). I'm glad UrgentVet is in the neighborhood!
