This place is awesome! So often at other places if you want vegan food you have to choose a beyond burger, salad, or avocado toast but here you get delicious food full of flavor and variety. It's a pity we're only on the Big Island for three weeks--what a find for us!!! Vegan Shop is hands-down the best 100% vegan restaurant I've ever eaten at! (YES!!! Exclamations abound!!!) Finding this little "dive" on Yelp! was a godsend. Even though there's a surprisingly good number of vegan-friendly restaurants (and/or restaurants with vegan options) in the Hilo/Pāhoa region, it's been very hit-n-miss, with most offering a mere nominal number of choices, and flavors being good to OK. There is absolutely nothing at Vegan Shop that is simply OK; what we've had has been nothing short of wonderful, as well as gut-busting!!! (LOL!) Chris, who hails from Saigon (Ho Chi Mihn City), via Orange County, CA ("Little Saigon"), is now ensconced in Hilo, HI, and his restaurant has all the ambiance of being right smack in some small village in Vietnam; very clean and well-maintained. Vegan Shop WILL be our go-to during our stay! The restaurant opens at 9:30 am, and it's best to get there early, as the menu runs out quickly--that's how popular this place is! On our first visit (we arrived a bit after 1 pm), everything was pretty much wiped-out. That said, the Pho and fried spring rolls were still available. Everything was absolutely fresh and wonderful! I was so excited to try this vegan spot, and I was amazed at first by the choices, but when I sat down to eat I realized this was just vietnamese without meat sitting in large warming pans having been cooked earlier. Most if it was cold and very greasy. It was a sad let down. If you look at the reviews they are from tourists who never come back...sadly I will not either. Vegan aside, this place has incredibly delicious food. I switched to a plant based diet over 2 1/2 years ago and have not experienced such flavorful food since, in a restaurant or at home. Chris has mastered the art of blending unique ingredients and spices (and love) into some of the most wonderful creations in the vegan/plant-based world of food. Since discovering the Vegan Shop, I have visited twice so far and plan on more trips to Hilo to sample his food. I have had the Vegetable Pho, the egg-less tofu patty (like a chicken patty), pork belly, fried rice, spring rolls and Singapore noodles. All of them simply amazing and flavorful. I can't wait for my next visit to sample the vegetable curry and other yummy looking entrees. You get a choice of 3 items on a plate at a very reasonable price. The restaurant is very clean with an open space concept. Come early with an appetite since they sell out of food usually by 1 PM. One of the things I have noticed about the food here is there is very little oil used. Most places I have been use way too much oil and saturate their food to add flavor. Today I sampled food from the other top rated vegan restaurant in Hilo and have to say, Vegan shop blew the other place away. This is a must visit place in Hilo and is worth the drive no matter where you are on the Big Island of Hawaii. [UPDATE]: After 8 trips to Vegan Shop, I still rate it 5 stars and my #1 restaurant on the Big Island. Add vegetable curry, Tuna Fish Bahn Mi, Char Siu, vegetable fried rice, Turmeric fried rice, and Green Papaya Salad to my list of sampled foods. The Pho is the best I have had in my life- the flavor, the richness, the complexity. It is sooooooo good!!!! The lunch plate is great when you want some variety and it is enough to share or save for a second meal. (Sometimes there is a spicy protein, so if you don't like spice ask what to avoid) The prices are so reasonable. Just bring cash for tip... they don't let you add it on the card. Life saver. Arrived in Hawaii 24 hours ago and two not so great meals in, was thinking I was about to survive on cereal and whatever I could talk my wife into cooking while on vacation. Looked around in Hilo and stumbled upon Vegan Shop and Mattress Store. An unlikely combo, but I ain't complaining. Maybe for $15, can do meal and a 30 minute nap. I really enjoyed my food and conversation with the owner. We are from The LBC and he spent some of his life there so we were able to connect right away.
