Sour Dough Loaf
Makoto C.

We had the banana bread and their sour dough and a coffee. The coffee hit the spot as we sat outside on the small bench and devoured a regular banana bread. I apologize for the photo of just the final bite as it was so good we forgot to take a photo of it. The next day we used the sour dough bread to have with our egg breakfast and it was nice and soft on the inside with a harder outside crust, it was perfect. I was surprised to see that I could purchase two sour dough loafs for the price of 1, so the price was on point. It is located right in old-town pahoa on the main street that everyone goes on back in the day.

3rd year in a row of ordering our daughters birthday cake from Bananarama. They are always incredibly sweet and helpful. The cake turned out amazing and so cute. Our daughter requested a yellow ducky cake and they delivered in looks and taste. Always a go-to for special occasion cakes! I recommend them to all our friends and family.

Incredible all-vegan bakery!! They also have a ton of gluten free and sugar free options. I tried their banana bread, pineapple lilikoi bar, purple sweet potato cheesecake, and banana cream pie, and everything was absolutely delicious. The desserts are not too sweet, and all the flavors and textures were incredible. They also have some savory plant based strombolis and various kinds of bread. I will definitely be back to try a stromboli and some other desserts!

vegan, gluten free, kosher and all things nice. Being vegan is tough, being vegan and gluten free is even tougher so I very rarely eat dessert. I spotted this place on HappyCow and man was I a HappyHuman to find coconut lilikoi (passion fruit) cake! The cake was not too sweet which balanced well with the sweetness of the frosting. It was yum. I got two slices. I also tried the gluten free bread which was tasty when toasted but a bit crumbly when sliced. My friend got the chocolate banana cake and loved it. What a gem in a tiny little town. My only qualm, which is my qualm about most places, is that the to-go containers weren't sustainable.

HAVE I BEEN SLEEPING UNDER A ROCK? @bananaramabakery was such a vibe, and the decor definitely lives up to the name. They're located in Pāhoa Town, and they're open 7 days a week. Now that I've been "exposed," I'll definitely have to stop here regularly. I had such an excellent "first-timer" experience, and I'm itching to eat through the entire menu. As a first-timer, I only got a few things because I wasn't sure what to expect. Here's what I got; Banana Caramel Cake Notes: OMG! There was only one slice left, so I'm glad I got it, but let me tell you, if a whole cake were available, I would've bought it, no questions asked! The banana caramel cake checked all the boxes! It was moist, flavorful, and balanced. It was sweet but not overly sweet, and that caramel frosting had a deep and rich flavor. This is one of the better cakes I've had in a while. Rating: 10/10 Banana Cream Pie Cupcake Thoughts: We ate our little haul outside, and I'm so glad we decided to eat there instead of taking it home to consume because after I ate this cupcake, I went right back in and ordered a dozen. OMG! The cupcake is a banana cupcake with a banana pudding center, topped with a rich vanilla frosting and a banana chip. Best CUPCAKE I've had in a long time! I'll be dreaming of these for sure. Who knows, maybe I'll swing by again today Rating: 100/10 Lavender Lemonade Thoughts: This was one of the BEST lemonades I've ever had. The lavender's floral notes of mint and rosemary really come through and paired beautifully with the vibrancy and tartness of the freshly squeezed lemonade. If you see this when you go, make sure to try it. Rating: 10/10 Citrus Refresher (lemon, lime, lilikoi, and coconut) Thoughts: I could talk for days, so I'll spare you all and keep things short. This is another MUST Rating: 10/10 Tahitian Lime Bar & Liliko'i Lemon Bar Thoughts: The flavor of each bar is perfect. The Tahitian lime and the lilikoi lemon flavors are undeniably tasty and accurate, I might add, but the crust didn't really do it for me. The crust on both bars was crumbly and didn't have a lot of flavor. Typically with good lemon or lime bars, you look for that sweet, buttery, and rich crust to counteract the tartness of the lemon/lime filling. The crust is the make-it-or-break-it piece of the dish because, without a good crust, there's no cohesiveness, and that's what it felt like. It felt like the filling was one thing, and the crust was another. If @bananaramabakery can find a way to bring the two together, these would be delicious! Rating: 6/10 These homemade strombolis, courtesy of @bananaramabakery, were insanely good! And when they say they make everything from scratch, they mean "everything!" They even make their own marinara and garlic sauce, so I had to try them both. The three strombolis we got today were the Italian sausage and pesto with mozzarella, the pepperoni with mozzarella, and the spinach with mozzarella. All three were perfect! There's absolutely nothing that I could critique. For anyone who may not be familiar with what strombolis are, think of rolled-up pizza served with your sauce of choice which speaking of, I highly recommend one of each (i.e., marinara and garlic). I am still trippin' over that garlic sauce. That sauce has me in shambles! For those who read my review yesterday, add their strombolis to the list of "must-try" foods! Absolutely stunning! P.S. Order it heated up and if any of you see me heading out to Pāhoa again, tell me to turn around and go to the gym I'm sorry I don't have more pictures. I only made videos. You can go to my IG to check out my reels. I'll have the two Bananarama Bakery videos pinned for the next month My IG is @bigislandfoodieandtraveler

Guacamole dip. Farm to table. Fresh and Ono.

The cinnamon roll is my go to when I want something sweet. I also just got the guacamole dip. Homemade and so fresh. A must try with the dip if you've never had it. Staff always friendly. Never a disappointment. Mahalo.

Chocolate lilikoi cake

We have gotten a birthday cake here 3 years in a row and it always tastes and looks amazing. The cake we get doesn't come in a smaller size which is unfortunate because it is large for 2 people. The prices are a little high, but the service is great and the cake tastes amazing!

We tried the Bomboloni and Nutella Coconut croissant during our initial visit. The Bomboloni reminds me of a malasada but I enjoyed the creamy filling of this so much more. We ended up going back on our last day and tried some of the savory options - the goat cheese pesto croissant and then sausage roll were standouts for us. Enjoyed this place so much we hardly took pictures, but everyone should add this as a stop especially if visiting Volcano National Park!

In fact, except Madam Pele does NOT necessarily keep to the same schedule as the bakery, would try to time my Volcano drives to coincide with Friday, Saturday, or Sunday! Hahah. Today got a sampling of Mediterranean scones (savory with olives and delicious seasonings), croissants, danish, and my favorite... the ube cruffin. Holy Moly Batman... that one item was worth the drive alone! Since there really wasn't any real estate in our tummies, we split everything 3 ways... over the course of the next few hours. Two weeks later, still thinking about that ube cruffin! Would definitely do a repeat on that as well as the Medeterranean scones while trying other items. And as the nice couple infront of us in line mentioned, will have to return for the sister deli across the parking lot. Heard it was featured in Guy Hagi's food vlog. And if its good enough for Guy Hagi its where I want to be my next mealtime!

Hilo's best kept secret tho I can't keep it a secret any longer!…read more FIrst stumbled upon Baumkuchen Farms 16 months ago when I visited the Big Island from Oahu... scouting where I would like to bring my college reunion group. They were gathering from places like Taiwan , Canada, the continental USA so betcha I wanted to show them only the best! Finding anything outside of downtown Hilo can be a challenge as WIFI gets a little sketch. Baumkuchen Farms is easy to find as they are marked on most Hilo (paper) maps. From the phone calls I made to the first welcome from Danielle who was on site to greet us on our scouting trip we felt welcomed. Danielle met us in the parking lot and guided us to the meeting place of the tour. She gave us a brief overview and showed us the bakery, the bathroom, the gift shop, before escorting us to "the hale" the meeting place under shade. Marcus, proprietor of the Farm with wife Maria, further told us about the rich history of the Baumkuchen estate as well as the products they baked and sold. Loved the tour of the farm where we saw vanilla beans growing in greenhouse, jurassic looking fruit trees and beautiful royal palms. A year later returned with my college friends who were absolutely impressed with the operation. We purchased baumkuchen cake, flavored cooking rock salts, other treats and of course ICE COLD drinks (in fact grabbed a few of these before the tour and after). And we enjoyed the tasty samples. In fact, have since seen these delectable morsels of Baumkuchen at Neiman Marcus in Honolulu at much higher price..! Still, nice to know where I can get more when I run out. Or, will have to take another trip to Hilo and Baumkuchen Farms! Thank you Maria, Marcus, Danielle for your hospitality. Visiting Baumkuchen at the Farm or Hilo Farmers Market is always a highlight on my Hilo trips!
