Loved this shop and the staff! Bikerowave is a an awesome non-profit with some reasonably priced bikes. The people are passionate about fixing bikes and making sure everyone can experience the joys of biking. Michael helped me pick a bike and spent 30 minutes talking through the different considerations in buying a used bike. He also let me test ride the different bikes and also helped me understand the differences in the types of gears and speeds. I ultimately got a used mountain bike there for about $180 but they had bikes in the low $100 range or less. There was also a kid's bike for $25. There is always a chance you find a cheaper bike on OfferUp but this shop has a great mission and has people that truly care about biking. Highly recommend checking it out! read more

So a bit over over three years later, I find myself back at Bikerowave to get a new tire and adjust one of our bikes. What a super amazing place!!! I was helped first by Michael, a volunteer who expertly talked me through putting the new tire on, and later schooled in the fine art of brake adjustment by Masha. Both were really friendly, skilled, and helpful people! I ended up also getting a rack that attaches behind the seat to carry stuff, and some very affordable bike tools. I gave an extra unsolicited donation, because this place is so worth supporting. If I was alone watching diy bike repair YouTube videos, I could probably figure out how to do some stuff like this, but it would not be fun, and it would probably have taken a lot longer (and have been potentially frustrating). Having someone teach and encourage me, using their good tools, and even just having the bike lifted up ergonomically on a stand, made this a really enjoyable experience. This place is the absolute best. In a dysfunctional society ruled by self interest and over consumption, it's so refreshing to see community spaces animated by generosity, sharing knowledge, and true collaborations. I've brought one bike back to life here back when I had time on my hands, but they also have a lot of really nice bikes for sale that they bring back to life. I also go there for all minor bike purchases (tubes, brake pads, lights, etc) as they have good stuff in stock for a fair price. What in the world!? This place is so cool, I wish there were places like it where I was growing up! I thought it was just a normal bike shop, but then I find out they teach YOU how to fix your bike. Okay, so now I think I'm hooked on fixing my bike I think, lol. It was actually a lot of fun. The hours are super weird, but everyone that works here is a volunteer so the shop is apparently open when they're all done with their real jobs... it took me a moment to figure that out. Anyway, this place is weird and quirky, but I'm happy I found it and I'm kind of excited to have my bike need repairs again so I can return and learn something new. You rock Bikerowave! read more

I went to microwave for the first time in May of 2017 to work on a tricycle that I bought at a local Goodwill store. I was amazed at the level of knowledge that these people who were regulars at this bicycle co-op have. And for only a very few dollars they showed me how to rebuild and read Grease the wheel bearings the bottom bracket put in new cables and housing for the brakes and shifters and made the cup and made this bicycle really nice. Since then I did some volunteer time before the pandemic set and since then I've taken two bicycles there and completely rebuilt one of them and the other one just did kind of tune up. Very reasonable prices and a great way to learn how to either repair, modify or improve any sort of bicycle you may have. You can even work on e-bikes there but if you have a electrical problem you need to go on a certain day because the eBay guys are only there a couple days a week but any other regular repair it's a great way to learn and save money read more

I recently had to have some spoke repaired on an electric bike at another shop that was located in Santa Monica on Main Street, and they charged me $155 to fix them and it took nearly a week! Last week, the same situation occurred in which five (5) spoke broke and there was no way I was going to return to the same bike repair shop as it is obvious, I got ripped off! So, a friend of mine who owns Taverna next store, I have passed BIKEROWAVE several times and I can tell you they are ultimate in service and repair. This place is a not-for-profit that completed the same work in about 90 minutes plus they replaced my brakes and five (5) spokes for the total of just $34.43! This place is a collective of bike enthusiasts who volunteer their time and energy to helping customers not just repair, but to understand how to fix and repair the bike themselves! This place is a God send, that offers expertise, patience and mentorship that is friendly and fun to work with and I would recommend BIKEROWAVE to anyone in lieu of the overpriced bike repair joints, especially on the Westside! For I have had two miserable experiences with my e-bike in that the pricing was ridiculous on one and the service awful on the other! People here are happy to bring their bikes and the network of volunteers are as qualified as any bike shop, I have purchased or repaired my bicycle! To save over $100 and be out the same evening with my bike is a dream come true and this was one of the best customer service experiences I have come across in decades! This is a FANTASTIC place to get your bike fixed up WHILE YOU LEARN HOW! Bikes are super cool, and it's really nice to get a sense for how your ride works. We're often so separated from how things are made that it's quite gratifying to actually get a real sense for that in a bike... which will NOTICEABLY ride better after you leave! (So satisfying!). Be prepared to get your hands dirty and have a good time. :) If you pay your SMC Student Activities dues, time here is also free! (you gotta have your student ID number etc. to get that signed off so the place can get paid thru SMC). Honestly, it's totally worth paying the hourly fee to learn how to fix your bike from nice people AND use their tools, grease, etc. I imagine the fixes I made could have easily been like $150-$200 at another shop... and I wouldn't have learned a thing, nor had such a good time, nor feel that continual satisfaction of a smooth riding bike. Wow! This was a far better experience than the bike shops I've visited before. The staff were all so friendly, helpful, and encouraging. They taught me through every step of the way as I was a complete novice and. They told me all the options I could take even if it meant getting something from the store across the street. I was surprised that I was having fun when I caught myself being more amused than annoyed when my tire exploded with a huge bang in the shop. I just cannot believe how the staff are actually volunteers but their down-to-earth demeanor and actions all point to that fact. The prices are reasonable and they weren't trying to sell me the latest carbon bikes or anything haha. I will definitely return here when my bike starts acting up again. read more

Tl;dr - Great variety of parts and tools at unbeatable prices. The best vibes. Fun for noobs and pros. The biggest selling point of this place is the staff - they are passionate volunteers not salespeople, and it really really shows. They are knowledgeable, genuine and able to find you exactly what you need, even if you weren't sure yourself. I'm extremely lazy but I always leave here excited to tinker with my bike and then go for a ride! - - - - - - - - - - I received an old falling-apart mountain bike and was curious to see if I could fix it up. I have no technical skills and am not interested in buying expensive parts or having a top notch bike, but the staff members I spoke with were all excited to help me with the renovation. Having gone to several other bike shops with condescending bike experts or slimy salespeople pushing their most expensive models, I was shocked by the sincerity of the volunteers here. With a five dollar wrench, five dollar tube and ten dollar multi tool, I was able to adjust my brakes, swap out the tube on the back tire, replace the seat and tighten the tilted handlebars! I'd watched YouTube videos on repairs and kept procrastinating because I was sure I'd botch it somehow - the staff here affirmed that the tasks were possible for a beginner to handle at a low price! So epic. They got all sorts of parts and their volunteers will repair your bike but have you work with them so you learn how it's done. Super friendly and knowledgeable people. I was hit by a car and my front rim was busted. Showed up and 30 mins later I wheeled out of there with a new rim and new tube (keeping my old tire) on my bike, and new knowledge of how to change my own tire! All at 1/3 to 1/2 the price of what it would've cost at a typical bike shop. I am always going to come back here for all my bike needs now! read more

It comes fully stocked with bike geeks and I do love bike geeks. They come with a plethora of knowledge to help you with everything from replacing tires to replacing ball bearings. This is a charge by the hour (a mere $7) plus costs of parts. A very cheap way to fix up your bike if you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty. The parts are also affordably priced- read: you won't need to dig around online and wait for a good deal. Just come in, sign in, sign a waiver, bring your bike to a station and you can start working on your bike. If you have any questions, grab any available mechanic and they will give you pretty detailed analysis of your bike if you want it and ask them any questions and they will be happy to teach you or to direct you in the right way. Then start getting your hands dirty, scrounge around for parts, and leave with a refreshed and happy bicycle. read more

This place is amazing. I recently started biking a lot on a somewhat old road bike my mom's friend gave me, and have been looking all over for a good bike shop. Having visited a couple different bike shops in West LA to compare prices and get a feel for the place, I met some nice mechanics but when I stepped into Bikerowave I was immediately a fan, for many reasons: - The concept itself is amazing. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, feed him for life." At bikerowave, the volunteer mechanics actually teach you how to fix your bike yourself, working with you and helping you out when you need it. Being a total noob, one of the volunteers Mike was extremely patient and helpful in showing me the process and very knowledgeable. He was a pretty cool guy too. - Best prices anywhere. Having looked on the internet and at many shops, you won't find lower prices for parts anywhere. I'm thinking they can keep their prices so low because the shop is non-profit and run by the volunteers. The hourly rate for working there is 7$ an hour which is more than offset just by the money you save on parts, not to mention the invaluable knowledge and skills you learn to fix your own bike -You also never have to worry about them trying to upsell you anything to make more money. -Huge selection of both new and used parts. This is great because if you only need a different part rather than a brand new part (which might be my case because I want to get cages and my pedals can't seem to fit any) or you only want to replace a broken part, you can get that part used at dirt cheap. This is also great because rather than having that part sitting somewhere in a landfill you know that it's going to good use. -Every tool you could ever need -AMAZING HOURS. For someone who has work until 6, getting home and getting to the bike shop before they close at 6 or 7 is a big issue. The bikerowave is open until 10:30! Furthermore, the only day they're closed is Fridays, and really you should be out doing stuff on Fridays instead of working on your bike. -The vibe is amazing. Because the place is run by volunteers who are there for the love of biking, everyone there is genuinely happy to be working on bikes and you can feel that sense when you walk in. There's also people who drop in just to hang out at the shop. You can feel a sense of community that you would never get just dropping your bike. Being new to the bike scene I've heard stories of places being pretentious and snobby, but everyone here is treated with genuine kindness and respect. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Inexpensive bike repairs + DIY instruction = the best bike shop around. If you're interested in learning more about bikes and gaining the basic skills needed to work on them, this place is for you. For 7 bucks an hour (plus the cost of any parts you need), you get the help of a volunteer who will guide you through the process of assessing and repairing your bike. I've experienced varying "hands-on" levels. Some work on the bike for you and explain as they go along. Others explain each step and watch as you work. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. So if you want to do more (or less) of the work yourself, just let them know. If there is a lot of work that needs to be done to your bike, you can store it for up to a month. They accept bike donations - which they either restore and sell, or break down into used parts that they sell for super cheap. They are open on evenings and weekends but sometimes close early if no one comes in. So be sure to check the hours and call if you come later. read more

Bike co-ops on this city seem to confuse their product with baked goods. Bikerowave. Bike Oven. Bike Kitchen. Bike Hot Plate. Bike Toaster. So when I walked into Bikerowave, I was expecting them to fix my bike with radiation. Instead, they showed me how to fix it with patient, knowledgeable volunteers and a general atmosphere of greasy hard work. It's $7 an hour to hang out and use their tools (of which they have plenty) and get a lesson in bike repair. It was a pretty awesome bargain, all considered, we fixed my bike and was coaxed out of my hesitation to touch any part of the mystery machine for fear of the whole thing falling apart underneath me. It was just straight-up refreshing to go from Helen's telling me my bike was in terrible shape to Bikerowave saying I had a solid bike and telling me how to make it even better. My husband wanted to get back into riding a bike and he did not want to spend a lot of money on his first bike in like 20 years. We asked around and our next door neighbor said that he had a friend that volunteered here and that we should check it out. They have bikes for sale that are already fixed up and you can also bring your bike in to do DIY repairs. We got a franken bike at a really nice price. All the volunteers were really nice and they even will help you find a bike that works for you. They do have limited hours so check before going to the store. I plan to also get a bike eventually however I am still recovering from surgery so I will be going back for myself. They also sell new tires and other items for your bike both new and used. I highly recommend this co-op!! Thanks so much for helping my husband find a bike that did not break the bank. The franken bike cost $50 and then we got a light and also a rack for the back. The light and rack cost more than the bike, however we are really happy with the bike. read more

The average rating reflects the high and low experiences I've encountered at Bikerowave. Sometimes everyone is very friendly and tries to assist you with your bike repairs. Other times people don't give a shit and you have to forge your own way. As long as you have the knowledge and awareness of what needs to be fixed on your bike and of course have some mechanical expertise, you can fix your bike here pretty easily so long as you're not led astray by chit-chat or long speeches exalting a person's bike knowledge and not the task at hand. The volunteer staff for the most part is friendly, but you do have to pry the lid open for answers on repairs depending on who you talk to and who you are. The dude-heavy staff tends to help females more than others in my experiences, especially if you're traveling through Los Angeles. Also beware bike parts which can make a money pit. It's great you can fix your bike with used parts, but keep in mind how errors propagate. read more

Hands down still the best bike coop I have been to, in LA or in any other city. They have the largest and most inviting space to do minor and major repairs on your bike and a great balance of used parts to rummage through as well as brand new parts that most bike coops tend to not have in stock (700c, 27", 26" wheels and every tube size you could possibly need). I find myself commuting across town to get repairs done here even though I'm closer to the Bike Kitchen. I got a new bike for $8 or that's what it felt like!! Literally every time I come into Bikerowave, I'm welcomed by a friendly technician who is very knowledgeable! This most recent time, I went in to tru my tires..somehow left aligning my front wheel that was misaligned...corrected my brakes that were loose & even oiled my chain. Most importantly unnoticed my pedal was broken! I think i take ok care of my bike but having more trained eyes look over def helped! PROS ******** 1) $7 hour for shop time is a great deal! 2) If they don't carry the parts you need, they will often help you order them (tip: bring your mobile phone in case you need to search for parts online). 3) At least one of the volunteers working is generally very knowledgeable and will give you apparently no-nonsense, honest advice. 4) No need to deal with aggravating bike shops trying to squeeze money out of you by playing games and fudging the truth. 5) No need to return to pick up your bike. Bring your bike in, fix it, and leave! 6) If you are a young woman, dress nicely, be friendly, act confused/helpless, and you'll likely get plenty of help very, very quickly. CONS ******** 1) It can be busy and crowded at times. As you might have supposed, cold, rainy winter evenings are generally much less crowded than warm, pleasant, summer evenings. 2) Service is often slow. Unless you are a "bike guy" or a young woman, be prepared to wait a while to be helped. 3) Work that could be done in 30 minutes often takes an hour or two because volunteers are often busy chit-chatting with one another, talking with "bike guys" or helping young women who appear to be confused/helpless. 4) You sometimes will need to "tread on egg shells" to get help from volunteers who are busy trying to ignore you. 5) Bikerowave has a very strong pagan vibe. Notice, for example, the clearly pagan murals painted on the walls. If you don't know what I mean but are curious, read up on the term "paganism" on Wikipedia. TIPS ******** 1) In addition to going to Bikerowave, you might benefit by watching bike repair videos by user name "Park Tool" on YouTube who has posted many excellent bike repair videos. 2) You might consider buying some parts (such as bike chains, cassettes, and bike lights) as well as common bike tools on eBay. CONCLUSION ******** I'm grateful that Bikerowave exists. I've been going there for about ten years or so. It's saved me lots of money and lots of time. I'm very glad that I no longer need to deal with local bike shops which often used to charge me a lot of money, typically required me to leave my bike for many days for repairs, and frankly always seemed to be trying to wring money out of me. But bear in mind Bikerowave is not a conventional business; rather it's a non-profit. The people helping you are all "bike guys" who need not help you unless they want to because they are unpaid volunteers. Finally, when you pay at the end of your session, be sure to give them a tip (in cash) to help them pay for their beloved burritos they usually purchase from one of the taco trucks on Venice Blvd. In exchange for the time the volunteers at Bikerowave spend helping you, you can at least help defray the cost of their food. read more

This is a self and support bicycle repair facility, at extra low cost of purchase / repair. Plus they have many parts for sale at excellent prices. I purchase brake cable for my sons bicycle, and it was less expensive than most stores, and even Amazon and other online stores. Plus they were supper helpful. If you are hands on, want to save money, want to learn how to tune up, repair, or watch others do it, then this is the place to go. If you want to drop off your bike and have someone else do simple easy or difficult repairs, this is not the place for you. My only issue with this location is the new road diet, or new street design which makes parking and getting there more complicated. I had to circle around in traffic from the road diet 3 times, and eventually parked in the CVS parking lot. read more

I was riding my bike with my pup in my backpack and my seat was up too high. I was lucky enough to have ridden by this place. I went in and asked if anyone could help me, i was given the right tool instantly and was able to adjust my seat no problem. Later on that night I was riding back home and happened to catch them right at closing. The owner checkin the back for a bigger backpack, offered to give me a rubber band to hold my stuff in place and even helped me get my pup back into my backpack.
