I'm so excited about Velvette opening because there really isn't much in the form of coffee shops that have ample seating in the neighborhood (other than a big chain that I'm not a huge fan of frequenting). I was happy enough that they had coffee and a big open space, but it got better when I heard about the menu from the barista. They had 4 different kinds of quiche: I tried the broccoli, which was great. They also had a bunch of different pierogies and pastries. I went with a simple cold brew as my beverage, but the barista was telling me about the velvette, which is their signature drink. It's kind of like a latte but has a special flair to it; I don't happen to remember what it was, but ask the barista about it! There's plenty of outlets along the wall, the crowd was very neighborhood-y, and it was productive for working. Velvette gets an A+ in my book. read more

That said, if you're able to get there during open hours, it's good coffee (haven't tried their pastries, although it's worth noting they're only $1 after I think 4:30pm) The baristas are consistently upbeat. Their signature drink, The Velvette, is delicious, made with 2+ shots of espresso, steamed and frothed milk, brown sugar, and maybe something else too. It's not cheap, at about $6 iced, but it does take a fair amount of work to make. And when I drink it, it feels like it's cooling my brain. There are typically a few people working on laptops (they have WiFi), but there's not that many tables. It's a good neighborhood spot, but the short hours limit its potential. read more

Unpretentious coffee shop with smooth brews. New to the area, Velvette looked to be just another cafe at first glance. However, after my second visit, it seems to be one of my favorite coffee shops in the neighborhood. I'm assuming they call it Velvette because of how smooth and light the coffee tastes. This is not far from the truth at all. I don't take my coffee black too often but their brews make it so easy to drink it in this way. If you prefer dark roasts, you might not be a big fan of their brew. I think it's a versatile choice for most people to at least try though because their prices are very reasonable. The atmosphere of the inside makes it perfect to do work in and they always play great music. I will continue to be one of their loyal patrons. Keep up the great work! read more

I go to this place occasionally on my way to the gym. I really cannot comprehend how a cafe makes such a common sense coffee 101 mistake. I order "the velvette" iced latte. They somehow cannot comprehend that you add milk to the espresso and then you add ice at the end so you don't dilute the coffee and hand someone a warm cup of melted ice. They literally pour espresso on ice every single time which is basically an americano. They teach the baristas to do this as it's the same every time no matter who works. They hand you a cup with it HOT at the bottom with ice on top. You shake it and your ice is instantly gone and you have diluted garbage. One time out of like over 10 visits did someone actually make a latte correctly and handed me a cold drink. The foam was nice and the coffee was decent. The space is decent. Great outside seating. I give 2 stars instead of one for the decent space and branding but a hot diluted iced latte is crazy read more

What I love most: OUTLETS! There are very few coffee shops in the neighborhood that are even remotely as friendly to laptop users as this place. Also: it's spacious, with big windows and nice lighting. The coffee seems uneven - in the first week I was coming here it seemed quite good; more recently, I've been noticing how much worse it is than the delicious Stumptown they brew at Hungry Ghost. On the negative side: I am normally almost entirely indifferent to the background music in coffee shops but it's been really bugging me here. Right now they are playing Ed Sheeran rather loudly, which for me is like fingernails on blackboards. The other day it was some twangy country music I also found unbearable. I love coming to this place for a great chai latte and to also do some work when I occasionally work remotely. The music is great and the noise level is always perfect. I especially appreciate the kind guys who work behind the counter. Once, I spilled my chai latte by accident while I was doing work and they cleaned it up for me and insisted that I go back to doing my work after I tried to help and they also replaced my chai free of charge! Velvette nearly derailed that quest altogether because I kept coming back, and coming back, and coming back.
