I used to knit a lot, but lost interest a couple years ago, and recently decided to try and get back in to it. When I arrived at Fillory I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help with anything. I asked for a simple pattern to help ease me back into knitting. The staff member (maybe the owner?) guided me to a table covered in free patterns they were giving away for LYS day and said I should pick one and then they would help me find the right yarn for the pattern. I picked what I hope is an easy shawl pattern and then another staff member led me to the appropriate yarn section. There were so many choices of beautiful yarn I had a hard time deciding. I finally settled on a skein of Malabrigo in variegated shades of blue. I didn't see the needles I needed for the project, but it turned out they had them behind the counter. It was so convenient to be able to buy everything I needed at once. To top it off, they offered to wind my skein right then and there. Usually yarn shops don't offer this service on special days like today when the shop is crowded with customers. Fillory has been around for many years through several owners. They have a large selection of yarn and helpful employees who work hard. There is also a dedicated space for social knitting if you want to drop by to knit with others. They offer a variety of classes, too.

After my trek, Fillory Yarn was like an oasis. I immediately felt welcomed by the coziness of the store (it's very welcoming and inclusive), as well as the very friendly and helpful employees. Multiple said hi and welcomed me in, asking if they could do anything for me or if I needed any assistance. I've only recently begun to get into knitting and I loved their social knitting table! More stores should have that. I live in SF and I suppose SJ stores have more space for that. There were multiple people sitting and knitting and chatting. I also appreciated their sale section! I didn't buy anything from that section, but considered it. I also got a 5% off discount off my first purchase for joining their loyalty program. Everyone was so very helpful and friendly, quite a few employees and they all asked if I needed help. I loved their examples of items that were made with yarns they sold. They have an extensive collection and variety across types of yarn, materials, yarns for different items, books, accessories, and items across different price points--there is something for everyone and anyone, which makes sense. Fiber arts are political and I've been very impressed at how stores and fiber arts communities are welcoming everyone of all backgrounds into the fold. I'm disappointed but not surprised that some Yelp reviews reflect people who don't appreciate that inclusivity.

The return of fine jewelry selection is always welcomed in our town! There were more stores that came and went, so finding a familiar reputable name on the same block & at the same location brings back brand recognition & excitement! Gleim the Jeweler is a family owned brand that has began on University Ave in Palo Alto in 1931, that's 8 years short of a century! Gleim had 3 locations in the early 2000s, the initial goldsmith shop in Palo Alto, Stanford Shopping Center store where Gleim has been one of the original tenants, and here in Los Altos as well. They downsized back to the roots at one time, under the leadership of Georgie Gleim, the granddaughter of the founder. Only Stanford location has been kept throughout the past couple of decades, so now we have Los Altos store back into the mix of businesses on Main Street! I welcomed Rafik and Carolina to my downtown and they smiled at me gracefully! Let's take a look inside, shall we? This is our favorite store downtown Los Altos. My heart is filled when I take my kids downtown and…read moreinstead of begging to go to the "toy store" they beg to go to the "rock store"! It is so educational to take them there and they learn something new every time! Debra is so inviting and friendly. When we first went there almost 4 years ago, my son was just 3 and I was terrified when I saw all of the expensive items. I started to have a panic attack and was shocked when she comforted me and said, "Its okay, let them touch." with a calm voice and a smile on her face. I hesitantly relaxed a little. My kids have never broken anything after over 40 visits. :) They also always have a kid friendly area set up that my kids choose to spend their own money on and Debra always gives them a kid friendly discount which fills my heart each time. Sometimes they have a bracelet making section for kids. My kids now have a deep love for rocks and gems. They give them out with their Valentines that includes a card about the rock and it is a huge hit! Their classmates get so excited and walk around and ask each other which rock they got. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful establishment so close to home and one that feels like home every time we visit. Thank you Debra and Mark for providing such a wonderful establishment for our community.

The…read moreproprietors (Mark & Debra) invited me to enjoy one of the "First Friday"* events in Los Altos; I spent two days laughing and smiling, learning some of the amazingly rich history behind some of the museum quality pieces of merchandise they have. I left with some truly meaningful gifts (birthstones, etc.) for friends and family, and priceless memories. I'll definitely be back- as even after two days of browsing, I'm certain I didn't (really) see everything in their wonderful Gallery. Can't thank you enough Mark & Debra (people as Genuine as the merchandise they sell...hard to find these days). *It seems the 1st Friday of each mo. Los Altos (the whole town) becomes a big party; there were approx. a dozen live bands throughout the town, and hundreds of wonderful people laughing, smiling and dancing in the streets. I highly recommend a visit to His and Hers Rock Gallery while you're there. It was the highlight of my weekend.
