Owner Horst met us on our inquiry visit, I decided to try them. Now living in FL, my classic 1990 Miata needed AC coolant refreshed. Unfortunately, I learned that meant an AC conversion to R-134 (from old ozone impacting refrigerant). The work was done as promised and the price was VERY GOOD! Everyone at Horst's Barvarian is client focused, from the office team, mechanics, and of course Horst himself. Two days later we had our other car undergo routine service, another positive experience complete with proactively offered honest suggestions. Try Horst's Barvarian Autoworks, you will be pleased.

No upsell, no delay, just quick service. I overhear several phone calls with customers while I was waiting that sounded very professional and honest. The waiting room was the cleanest that I have ever experienced in a small shop like this. They had water and seltzer in a mini fridge. They also had a Kurig for coffee. 2024 must have been an off year for the Avenue Garage. I've heard from a neighbor who previously…read moreworked as a mechanic there that they have quite a turnover with new mechanics and heard from another source that mechanics get commissions these days. I took my 2013 Mercedes convertible there in January 2024 and left it there for diagnostics of an overheating problem after being stuck in traffic all day from 1-75 being closed on December 27th or 28th 2023 due to a bad multiple vehicle accident. The Avenue Garage said the head gaskets were blown and it needed an engine replacement. They did find a replacement engine with approximately 50,000 miles "of course that's what they all say I have learned". Then the repair estimate was over $11,000 to replace the engine and make sure everything was operating properly. I decided that seemed really high and ended up leaving the vehicle here at my second home in Punta Gorda and deal with it this 2025 season. In January 2025 I contacted a Mercedes Benz repair specialist in Pompano Beach Florida and told him that it was determined last year by another repair technician in the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda area that the car needs a replacement engine so he said he would try to find one and get back with me. He did find a replacement engine within a month then called me back with an estimate of approximately $4500 total for the engine and putting it in. The engine itself was $2100 which was included in the total price of $4500. I then paid for the engine and scheduled my once a year long haul tow up to 200 miles and had the vehicle towed to Pompano Beach for replacement of the engine. ABA Performance in Pompano Beach then test drove the car a few times, ran the engine diagnostics, determined it was low on coolant and spark plug #3 was misfiring but GUESS WHAT THE CAR DID NOT NEED A REPLACEMENT ENGINE AFTERALL! I was very skeptical about what I was being told but he satisfied me with his answers to all of my question. He did do a complete service on the vehicle and fixed what was needing to be fixed. So now I have a 2013 Mercedes replacement engine for sale $2100 OBO! So glad I didn't fall for the over 11 grand repair job that the Avenue Garage recommended. I almost sold the car as is to another neighbor thinking it needed an engine replacement and left the car here in Punta Gorda with a car cover on it which blew off during Helene or Milton not sure which hurricane it was. LESSON LEARNED ALWAYS GET A SECOND OR EVEN THIRD OPINION

Not only did they replace the faulty unit free of charge, but cleaned the vehicle inside and out as well as inspected the car for additional deficiencies. This was a safety courtesy to me without any pressure to perform the repairs or drum up sales. This was very much appreciated as these deficiencies really needed to be addressed and I was given a quote and the option to either repair it myself or have them do it. Again, no pressure! She took it back in, to be looked at again. They then wanted to replace Compressor (only) and more Freon. She did the repair, day before the holiday. That worked for a day, then stopped working again. It took several days to get back into the shop. When she did I was there this time. I questioned what they had done previously and tested. Trying to ensure they weren't just replacing parts to replace parts. They reassured us they fully tested anything. They scheduled an appointment to retest the system. So we dropped the vehicle off at 8am, we called several times during the day without a response. Finally got a call at the end of the day close to 4pm, and said now they tested it and the system seemed like there was a blockage. So they wanted to replace the Condenser and Expansion Value, for another ~$1000. I questioned the quote, and they had a hard time explaining the charges. Just that there was $650 in Labor and $350 in parts. I did some researched prices online, for Parts and Labor. I found the parts ~$75 to $150 and the average cost in her County was ~$700. When I asked why the markup was high (133%) if the place that they were getting parts from was the dealer or the part broker didn't have warranty on parts. He said and I will not forget it... "let me be honest, the owner sets the pricing. And we are located on the Island here and there is money on this Island." We won't be going back, and recommend others stay away.
