Even though only a few patrons were there, service was very slow. Even though I was seated at the counter, I was almost completely ignored. Maybe because I ordered only a "regular" cup of coffee and a muffin rather than one of their specialty drinks, I was not considered enough of a coinsurer to appreciate their higher end selections. I was in the area for a meeting and was so pleased to find this cafe nearby. Warm, friendly and efficient staff greeted me and made me feel welcome at this neighborhood spot. I ordered a dirty chai latte and Nonna's French Toast with bacon. I am not a "take pictures of my food" person, but I should have taken pictures. Lovely presentation on both. The French Toast was thick and cinnamon-y with little dollops of whipped cream and fresh strawberries. The bacon was perfectly crisp and delicious. I cleaned my plate! This is a corner spot with assorted seating. Some tables, loveseat, low seating and a counter. The side has some outside seating too. Free parking is offered in the lot next to the building. I don't understand these amazing reviews. This is a coffee spot, so it says. I went with the house coffee hoping for a rich hot brew. What I got was a cup of lukewarm coffee that was tasteless other then the bit of cream I poured into it. I ordered the Taylor Pork roll sandwich that comes with egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll. The sandwich is served with fried potatoes. The sandwich consisted of 2 thin cut slices of pork roll, an egg, American cheese on a soft roll. The sandwich was okay but fell short of being impressive. The potatoes are squared chopped and cooked on the grill top with nice crispy edges. I believe this sandwich is pricey at $11. Truly the coffee was my lure to dine here, and was hugely disappointing. Cup size is standard, but you have to ask for coffee refills. Confusing for a coffee spot. Service was acceptable friendly but not attentive. The server was new and when asked if there was WiFi available, she didn't know, said she would go ask, and never came back with an answer. Given that there were only 4 other diners, the server was clearly overwhelmed, and when asked for lemon for the glass of water, she said I don't know if we have lemons, let me go ask. Since this restaurant is located one block off of the main drag, Venice Ave, it's usually pretty easy to find a parking spot on the street. We were looking for brunch and found exactly what we needed. I had an omelette made with ham, Swiss cheese, mushrooms and spinach. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection and was nicely complemented by their home fried potatoes. The medium-roast house coffee was served piping hot and fresh. The Java was an excellent accompaniment to my omelette and certainly on par with any specialty coffee shop in town. Keep in mind, many specialty coffee shops and roasters typically don't offer full breakfast and lunch menus like Venice Island Coffee does. We went there for a late breakfast. The service, food and ambiance was amazing. Everything was delicious. But I was completely impressed with was that they had gluten-free bread, almond milk and completely accommodated my allergies. As a local finally was able to pop in here with my husband for lunch. My iced Oat Milk latte was quite good and my husband enjoyed his regular coffee. Due to several health/diet restrictions I can't say I was raving about my turkey sandwich; however I had to remove the aioli sauce and bacon so right there that's just sad for me! I do have to say though the gluten free bread was good and I loved that they gave me plenty of turkey. My husband ordered the ham sandwich and thought it was stellar, but it did lack meat. Unbelievable! Wanted to try this place out and big mistake. Small restaurant with about 8 tables. Just wanted to try their coffee but decided to get a muffin because it would be quick. Once seated it took 10 minutes to order. Server brought the muffin which I asked to be heated. She said sorry and took it back. The coffee was served then after 10 min wait another server asked if I had been helped. Yes I replied but the muffin never came. She went and picked a totally different pastry and I said that's not right. They gave me the check for the coffee which I reluctantly went up to pay. Just then the owner came in and I explained the situation. He asked me to step outside and addressed me with this attitude. I told I came in for a coffee and muffin which took over 30 minutes and he said imagine if 40 people came in and ordered a coffee and muffin. First of all there were only about 10 people in there. Very good breakfast food. I've been here twice while I stay in the Nokomis area this week. Both breakfast meals were done to perfection. Nice portion sizes (I cringe when served traditional massively large US portions). The house coffee was fine. It could have a bit more flavor. The atmosphere is not as funky as I prefer for a coffee shop, but it is comfortable.
