I am the only oerson that did not know about it?? What a cool and historic place!! The service was pleasant and welcoming. Pretty impressive line and took almost half an hour from hitting the front porch, the line , the order, and then going back in to get the latte and the capucino. It was hot and tasty. I would have like soy as a plant based option. Taste milky hot and froths/steams well. Almond separates and is thin. Cocunut milk is oily and make the coffee flavored like a pina colada. Really like this place and the people working there. I can imagine it must be a disaster abd,very long lines on the weekends and especially in season??? My family and I were at the Venice Market, picked up some vegetables and donuts, and stopped at Lord-Higel's to purchase coffee. We decided to sit outside and enjoy it. While enjoying our coffee, we took a few bites of the donuts we had just purchased at the market. That's when an older woman approached us and rudely informed us that we were violating the health code and needed to put the donuts away. She proceeded to lecture us and wouldn't really allow us to respond. We finally said we would just leave, to which she replied, "Okay." The entire interaction was unnecessarily rude and completely unpleasant. For the record, if outside food is against the establishment's policy, that's one thing. But telling customers they are violating the Florida/Sarasota County health code is an entirely different claim. As far as I can determine, eating a donut purchased from another licensed establishment while sitting outside is not, in itself, a Florida or Sarasota County health-code violation. She repeatedly insisted that she would know because she had been a "chef" for many years and even said, "McDonald's wouldn't allow it." Well... I wasn't at McDonald's. And apparently ordering a coffee at a coffee shop and taking a few bites of a donut from the farmers market required a lesson in food-service law. The irony is that we have always been happy to support Lord-Higel's and Black & Gold. The baristas have always been a 10/10, and we've had good experiences there in the past. Unfortunately, one unnecessarily rude interaction can change that. There are plenty of great coffee shops in Venice where customers can enjoy a cup of coffee without being lectured over a donut. So, thank you, "Karen," for the lesson. You've officially saved me the trouble of deciding where to spend my coffee money next time. read more

A coffee shop in a historic building owned by the city is a great idea. There are many great coffee roasters in our county like OA, project coffee ect. Black and Gold is the wrong choice. They are openly hostile to everyone in our community. I know a dozen wonderful people who have been kicked out of Black and Gold for various reasons: loitering outside before opening, not ordering anything but their party had ordered food, having a service animal ect. The coffee is good. It doesn't make my top five for Sarasota county, but again there are many great coffee shops in our county. Since we started coming here they have taken down their "30 minute time limit" sign- which makes sense since this is a public space. What they haven't removed is their hostility. I hope the city of Venice does not renew their lease and allows some kind and good people to represent us to those passing through our amazing town. Also I didn't like the egg salad, but it probably is not for me. I don't like brown mustard in egg salad. read more

Have funky rules, like if you kid brings a drink in a bottle in they will ask you to leave, 30 min time limit on a seat. Think it is time for the city to review the contract. read more

The ambiance is a 5 star! A cute Victorian home turned into coffee house with indoor/outdoor seating. There are Adirondack chairs, table with chairs, lights and the most beautiful hanging flowers. The baked goods are delicious, the coffee is good. They are learning so have patience. It is not even a year old. Parking is on the street and they also have a lot where there is parking. Bathroom is outside. Pros all around! The only con would be that when the lines are long, maybe post a chalkboard of coffees with pricing while customers are waiting?? You do t know until you get to the register what coffees are available. I go quite often and the food is more of snacking but all good! read more

I genuinely cannot remember the last time I visited a coffee shop with such an unnecessarily unwelcoming atmosphere. A coffee shop is normally somewhere you can sit down, enjoy your drink, work, talk, or simply relax. Apparently, that concept comes with a timer here. The seating has a 30-minute time limit, which is honestly bizarre for a coffee shop. If I'm paying for coffee and supporting your business, I should not feel like I'm being timed the second I sit down. It completely defeats the comfortable, inviting atmosphere people actually go to cafés for. What made the experience worse was the attitude. Instead of communicating policies politely and making customers feel welcome, the interaction came across as dismissive and unnecessarily hostile. The owner's attitude toward having a dog there was particularly unpleasant and made the entire experience uncomfortable. There are far too many great coffee shops with genuinely kind owners, welcoming environments, and customer service that makes you WANT to return. I would much rather spend my money somewhere that appreciates its customers instead of making them feel like an inconvenience. Coffee can be great, but hospitality matters. An all-encompassing best place in Venice right now in my opinion! (Only thing that would make it better would be water views ha!) I not only love their sugar free vanilla lattes with oat milk, but love their black coffee as well. And you can get it in a REAL MUG!! That's five stars right there. Yesterday I got an amazing gluten-free dairy-free muffin that was to die for. It was nice to see them fully stocked with some baked goods! Then there's the porch. Ten stars. They did it right with plenty of tables (some high, some low) and rockers. There's so much shade; it just calls for you to stay hours and that's exactly what I've done! It's a great place to bring your laptop and get some work done too; however, in my experience so far the internet has been quite slow. In addition, just a heads up I don't see any outlets on the porch anywhere. Other than these two minor things, it is by far the best coffee hang spot in town. read more

This recently open coffee house is one of a kind. First of all, the building was acquired by the City of Venice in 2005 and Venice Heritage volunteers raised more than $800k and many hours which restored the house to its original condition. Secondly, the building is the second oldest house in all of Sarasota County and was constructed back in 1896 by Joseph Lord. Black Gold offers a large selection of coffee drinks and an assortment of baked goods. Their coffee is smooth and has a strong aroma. Their staff is friendly and helpful and most hot or iced drinks are made to order. Most favorite part of being at this coffee house is the wrap around deck and outdoor patio. It makes it a great place to catch with friends or get some work done. Did I mention they have jazz music playing? What more could a coffee house want? Enjoy! read more

The coffee and the food are great - five stars The service is good (though less efficient than Sbux... but Lord Higel's food is FAR superior) - three stars. For ambiance: this is an amazing historic house that is owned by the City of Venice and leased by Black Golf Coffee. For that, one can overlook the challenging steps and the not-very-safe thresholds (caution: it is not marked; even non-elders stumble a bit on it); and the single restroom at which there can be quite a wait (the two locks on the inside are a bit confusing as to which one to use). What cannot be overlooked... Black Gold restricts use of their seating and tables to 30 minutes. At a coffee shop!! In an historic building owned by the taxpayers!! They DON'T WANT people to hangout and meet up. There are signs on every table declaring the time limit. The restriction is in place even when no one is waiting to sit. It's ridiculous - major negative stars for not welcoming folks who want to hangout to read and work and people-watch; for folks who want to gather in a non-alcoholic environment; for wasting valuable community-owned (albeit privately leased) space. read more

The restored 1896 building is all original and beautifully maintained. It's amazing to see a modern espresso bar set up right in the heart of this historic home. I stopped in midday for a cappuccino, and it was perfect. Lord Higel Coffeehouse is owned and operated by Black Gold Roasters, so you know the coffee is top-notch. They clearly know their beans and how to craft a proper drink. We sat outside on the deck at a bistro table, surrounded by greenery. The setting was quiet, relaxing with soft jazz music playing in the background. The owner mentioned they'll be serving wine and charcuterie plates in the afternoons and evenings, which sounds like a perfect fit for this cafe. The setting is absolutely beautiful: a historic Venice property, a relaxed porch, and an atmosphere that feels thoughtful without trying too hard. It has that rare quality where the place itself makes you slow down and enjoy the moment. The coffee is world class. You can taste the care behind it, and the quality of the coffee matches the beauty of the setting perfectly. It is genuinely magnifique. What makes it even better is that it turns into a wonderful evening spot as well, with fine wine, champagne, and dessert after hours. First off, amazing location, plenty of seats, such a charming cool spot in downtown Venice. The staff were super nice. The baked goods are awesome but wished the cookie was warm. I was however really disappointed that my coffee had so much ice in the cup. I mean 3/4 of the cup was ice. I feel like that means the cold brew costs at least 2x as much as a hot coffee. First time at this location, but long time visitor and lover of Black Gold coffee. Coming from being spoiled in the PNW, it was a treat to find the original location of Black Gold 14 years ago. My partner and I were searching for decent coffee and stumbled on the original location and we go back every time we're in town. This new space is such a perfect blend of history, quality coffee and baked goods, care, and location. We stumbled into town on their soft opening in November '25, but the line was wrapped around and down the sidewalk so we didn't stay (kids). Today, I went back for early morning coffee with my folks. We met some lovely neighbours from around the 'hood and got a chance to meet the owner, Gary. The deep care for the building and site is very apparent and makes it all that much more special. There are cozy cafe tables indoors or out (with heaters), rocking chairs and high tables available all out on the gorgeous wraparound porch which is lovingly adorned with ferns and gentle trailing petunias. The blueberry scones were even more delicious than they looked and were light and tasty. I had dark roast and mom had medium and both were smooth and delicious. The staff were kind and courteous and the Saturday farmers market is right out the front door! (Which does make parking challenging as they share a lot with the city of Venice fleet.) We easily found street parking but we got there at 7am, so I can imagine it's difficult once everything opens at about 9. Atmosphere: 10!! Coffee: 10; smooth, strong and rich flavours not bitter at all Scone: 9; good flavour and texture Location: can be difficult to find since Google doesn't have it listed as Black Gold coffee, but it is! The location is great for visiting the park, market or shopping. Parking: a bit of a challenge at times. I can't wait to go back in the evening to enjoy the food! This place is a gem!! read more

First things first: they have black & gold coffee! So that is the biggest win here. Other than the amazing sourced coffee the location and premises are beautiful. Unfortunately those are the only things going for it. Food is very mediocre and that's being generous. If they spent more time and effort on making a better food experience this place could be 10/10. Lastly the menu/standing in line experience is horrible. There are no menus around except on the counter and when you are standing in a long line for 15 mins and then are rushed to look through and make a decision when you have ten people behind you waiting for their turn. read more

Initially had a good experience, food, drinks and service were great and plenty of shaded seating, Actually bought food & drinks twice in one morning, second visit the server outside was short with us because we had some produce and food (in a closed bag- not consuming it) while we finished our recently purchased Higel beverages, the coffee shop Janet to a farmers market which clearly brings a good amount of volume to the business. She was unprofessional (to put it kindly) in her tone and body language and we won't be returning, ironically as we were leaving I witnessed her get very rude with a patron that reported to her the water in the bathroom was out. What could improve? Service. Saturday morning when the farmers market was going on, I had my two kids with me, 12 and 4 and an adult friend. My youngest wanted a donut from the farmers market so we got one then proceeded to Lord Higel's for our coffee. After spending $27.50 on 4 drinks (one which was milk for my youngest) we were asked to leave because NO OUTSIDE FOOD was allowed! I was astonished to find out that it was the owner who specifically asked for us to leave. Not good service. I could understand if we were sitting at their table with only food from the farmers market but we were talking about a donut for my 4 year old. read more
