I graduated from VC more years ago than I will admit. Now I am taking a night class and am very impressed with the new library and other campus additions.. Some of the classrooms are in the same funky 1970s buildings, but the art/design classroom has updated computers and huge monitors. The library building has cool architecture and a vast seating area with computers. The online registration process is challenging (you need a Master's degree to figure it out), but after an hour and a call to the helpline which confirmed that the error glitch would require me to re-input all my data again, I was able to register. The open hours for the store and registration are tricky too, so check online before venturing over. The teachers are as cool as I remembered them, so it has been rather fun revisiting some of my college memories. I even find parking spots on Loma Vista like I used to, and they will still ticket you in the permit parking lots too. read more

While VC offers affordable and convenient classes, it falls short in every other department. Every counselor my family has met has given false information and limited choices where there were alternatives available. In addition, the teachers are highly unmoving and do not even allow a late assignment when an immediate family member has been in the hospital or even passed away. Most recently, a teacher stated that it would not be equitable to treat students differently in such circumstances. Equality and equity are not the same thing; equity is giving people what they need, versus equality which is giving everyone the same thing. The fact that she did not understand that concept was especially frustrating and alarming considering it was a COMMUNICATIONS CLASS. I strongly urge any and all attendees to research the teacher's name and history on MULTIPLE sources, not just the college's. This institution depends on the ignorance of students in order to pass themselves off as "experts." I use the term "teacher" rather than "professor" since they are clearly not at that caliber. In this particular case, the teacher is Stacy Sloan Graham. We are required to take multiple courses in equity to obtain our degrees. However, this college does not seem to require their educators to practice it. read more

Thank you everyone for your honest reviews about Ventura College! I did NOT have a good experience applying to a full time opening(that apparently does not exist) at Ventura College. I called the main hub and told the receptionist that I applied to a full time office role at VC. I clarified that I did not apply at a job fair. I applied online. After 3 phone transfers(after stating clearly what I applied to) I finally got to HR. I offered to provide the job ID to the agent who declined. He then explained that the full time job I applied to does not exist. Why was it posted then?Im hesitant to know which job openings at VC are "real" and which ones arent. read more

Hello, I started out at Ventura College without a pot to piss in. I was living in my Jeep, I just broke up with my family, I was a mess. Ventura College does more than just give you your education. I was on bad terms with my whole family and achieving my degree opened up the door to talk to my mom and dad, again. Nevertheless, I am now back in my family again. I have achieved homeownership; since, college. I also have all of my needs met. Thank you Ventura College and my other schools for opening doors and feeding a broken man, literally and figuratively; via, education And real things. I am now whole once again. Since early May, I've been trying to enroll in a single class required for my degree. What should have been a straightforward process became a deeply frustrating ordeal-thanks to a complete breakdown in communication and accountability among the California Community Colleges (CCC), the California Virtual Campus (CVC), and Ventura College. The issues began when my local community college's class filled up before my registration window even opened. My counselor recommended I turn to the CVC for alternatives. Unfortunately, that led to more confusion: CVC support informed me they had no record linking my account to my CCCID, despite the fact that it's the only ID I've ever been assigned. They instructed me to contact CCC support directly. What followed was an infuriating game of finger-pointing. Even though I had access to my CCCID, CCC staff refused to take responsibility and instead redirected me to three different community colleges and my university-none of which could help me. It's like being told your driver's license is invalid, but instead of the DMV fixing it, you're told to call airports and bars to figure it out. I called CCC support daily for over a week, pleading to speak with a supervisor or someone who could explain the issue. Not only did I receive no answers, but each call ended with my case being closed, without resolution. The staff I spoke to were dismissive and rude, and I was stonewalled at every turn. Finally, one representative admitted that I would need to reapply and enroll directly at Ventura College as a new student a process that delayed me another week. I blindly applied and enrolled without even knowing whether the one class I needed was still available. Once accepted at Ventura, I immediately called the counselor's office to get help enrolling in that class. Instead of assistance, I was met with apathy and disrespect. A woman on the phone with a Mexican accent told me " I needed to figure it out on my own" and abruptly hung up on me. Thanks to the complete lack of support and empathy from every institution involved, I will now be delayed an entire semester and pushed back from completing my BS degree all because of one class that no one seemed able, or willing, to help me register for. This experience has been incredibly disheartening. The lack of coordination, accountability, and basic human decency from the CCC system and its affiliates is unacceptable. If you are a local high school student looking to go to Ventura College and play football. I think twice. They definitely favor the transfer students and are not invested in any of our local athletes. Completely disappointing and what a waste of time. Local high school students look elsewhere. Highly recommend going to a community college Outside of Ventura. Cannot say enough things about how disappointing this program was for local kids. Terrible experience. Some professors get offended if you ask for office hours or any teaching assistance, leading to retaliatory actions. Don't gamble with your future here. Education should be enjoyable, inspiring, encouraging, and well-guided. My experience was very negative and stressful. I was denied office hours, which should be a huge red flag--this is not normal. Expect harsh and unfair grading, an unsupportive learning environment, and self-teaching all materials. Despite doing well in my work and grades (I taught myself well), I was unsupported and not taught by the teacher. The advocacy for students is poor. I do not recommend this college at all. Don't gamble with your future or grades--it's not worth it. read more

I was bullied by Professors Ronald Mules and Michael Bowen while attending the college. At one point Ronald Mules yelled in my face for no reason to try and startle me. He even made a comment saying "nobody wants you" and "you don't know very much" while looking at me in front of everyone in class. These are not people you want to spend time around. Michael Bowen made comments about my weight and would give me mean, dirty looks in class. I told the office about these and other instances and they were completely ignored. When I started coming to this College, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I knew I wanted to become a nurse but I needed options whether it was beneficial becoming an LVN, RN etc... I went to the counselors several times and each time I got someone different and each of that time they all gave me a different opinion due to their lack of, I want to say experience towards students. they are the reason why I doubted the decisions that I was making during my time at this school and unfortunately, I am still here a few years after graduation doubting what to do because I realize there was an easier way to do things had I not listened to them. Ventura's junior college. Great campus, not super huge. Its pretty simple to navigate. They've added new buildings & are constructing more at the moment. Students here are pretty relaxed & chill. Unless you're one of the nursing students who are usually stressed out. Which I've heard VC has a difficult but great RN program. Heard it takes a couple of years to get into on a wait list. During lunch they've been having food trucks near/in front of the bookstore. One food truck was "Scratch". It was very good, esp since I was starving & a burger sounded soo good lols. read more

The rudest admissions office. The people there are all very rude. Everytime I go in there there are several ladies who just sit at their desks, in no hurry to get up to help you , and have the most disgusted looks on their faces; like you're putting them out. And you have to be nice to them because they hold the power you need to get your paperwork completed. They always tell you that you don't have the paperwork that you need, then miraculously, seconds later, you do have it, they see it now, and they can proceed. Ugly(attitutde) people with poor customer service skills. If you hate your job so much you should go do something else. Awful experience. If you want to be treated like a human, go to Oxnard college. I'm finishing up this fall and I have more than enough to say about this campus. I'll give credit to the professors at this institution, they provide students with more than enough resources and actually want them to succeed. However, the administration specifically at the FAFSA office she was outright rude, talked to me as if I were stupid, and when I would ask questions she would interrupt and say "what is it you're trying to achieve here" as if I wasn't already explaining my situation at hand the fact that my mom came along and witnessed the interaction was embarrassing on VC's part. She also made it seem like she didn't want to help or that we were interrupting her time and even when I was helped by the student workers (who by the way were amazing) the said woman at the window came in and shut the door saying "help them, but then we're closed for lunch" so it felt like we were being rushed to finish. The bookstore is another problem area, I recently had to return a book I went in to see one student worker and she said she couldn't help me because the actual staff who does returns were all on lunch keep in mind it was nearing closing time so I was confused as to why they would take a lunch before closing. I was then told to come back later, I didn't have time so I quickly drove home went to the bookstore website and tried to print out the return label and my card information was apparently incorrect I did both my debit/credit information about 10 times each...nothing so as a last resort I went to UPS myself and paid out of pocket to have the book shipped back it would only take a day because I live in Ventura county it said it was received and delivered the next business day I was emailed saying my account was charged 87 dollars for a package that was received on their end so I have to call to tell them my situation. All in all the professors and academic counselors are more helpful than the actual administration, if you go to the FAFSA office be warned the window is heavily tinted and you'll be talked down to by a middle aged woman, and if you need textbooks I recommend buying from Chegg saves you the headache. read more

Not too bad of a college. I got my degree here a couple of years ago. PROS--not too crowded, rather easy classes, laid back atmosphere. Will get you to the next level of college if that is your goal. Cheap....best reason to go here. CONS--Instructors are hit and miss. Mostly liberal views on history and political science. Some professors are new since I was there, but the ones remain are only "so, so" in their knowledge and open mindedness. I was in the history/political science program, so I can only attest to that part. Would I go back? No real need to...at this point in my career, I'd only go back for fun, or to take an interesting class for my own enrichment. read more

I was given a survey to rate my experience with the counselors but was not given a comment box so here I am. Went 3 different times to get help on summer classes and was not given any useful help the first 2 times. The lady that had been at the desk the first 2 times was rude, and talked to me as if I were incapable of understanding her answers, but she was not knowledgeable when it came to answering my questions so she gave me bs answers. I showed up a 3rd time extremely frustrated that I hadn't been able to make an appointment because the first lady wasn't allowing me. I let the new desk person (Belen) know what I needed help with and she made it so EASY. She put my name down to talk to a counselor, and I let her know of the previous person and the info she had given me and Belen gave me different info, mentioning that I had been given information that didn't make sense previously. Today, for the third time, I found out one of my classes is being cancelled. I'm so sick of this half-assed, pathetic institution f**king up my degree track. Don't bother with this s***thole school, half of the instructors don't even care to get to class on time. The 'gym' is a sick joke, no A/C, hot & humid as hell and there's always some obnoxious crap going on downstairs that is loud enough to drown out your music in your headphones. And good luck with parking during spring/fall, you may find a spot or you may need to park 1/2 mile away, it's a coin-toss. read more

Really beautiful campus. Good backdrop for amature portrait photography. My friend took a photography class here and loved it. I've also been to their theater to watch a play and it was comfortable and well maintained. Overall I'm glad to have this college in our community. read more

Well, I love Ventura College, but I am biased because I work here, but I was a student here long before I worked here. From the perspective of an employee I love it here because honestly, everyone here loves to help the students. We are all about seeing the students be successful. And, as a student, it's a fantastic school. All you could ever want in a community college. Great counselors, great advisers, financial aid. assistance with tutoring and test taking. Great food trucks, ocean views, mountain views (2 trees) and just overall amazing campus. I love the new Holistic Health classes. The only Holistic Health classes at a Community College in the state. My review is specifically for the kinesiology department classes, although the entire school offers excellent courses. I just happen to love the fitness workout & safety help available. For women who need a great workout, take Conditioning for Women with Carol Schreiber. She is the nicest teacher & will help you get in the best shape of your life. I also highly recommend Self Defense/Assault Prevention with Larry Reynosa. No matter how strong or fit you think you are, this class is right for you. Larry is like Bruce Lee and he will teach you things that will save your life & better you as a human. If you need self improvement these are wonderful starting points. read more

Counselor met up with me, had told me I was set to graduate, i then went on with graduation and a month later was informes by EMAIL by her that she "made a mistake" (F'd up) and I didnt end up getting enough credits to graduate. Her excuse? She was too "excited" about graduation and she mis calculated. Wtf. read more

This is a very nice Institute for a Community College. I almost always get the classes I hope for every semester whether summer or fall. The Staff there are very accommodating. Student Services always go out of their way for me as well as the counselors. The Faculty is also of great selection to educate attending students with great knowledge and support. read more

My son enrolled at El Camino High School and dual enrolled at VCC. The registration process at VCC was painful. We had to check into two different kiosks to try to register. When we finally got to a human....they couldn't register him for his math class because it wasn't "coded". So, off we went to the assessment center to find out why his math wasn't coded. Well, it turns out that the supervisor hadn't entered the scores from the week before. So, the very efficient clerk entered his test result and we went back to the registration center. Then check-in again in the kiosk. Currently I'm still waiting in line...not impressed so far. Hoping teachers are great and make up for this administrative inefficiency. Call me a dinosaur...but I seriously miss paper applications! read more

I had a very negative experience with the faculty that run the P.C. 832 firearms class. I had trouble getting any form of help over the phone, they were incredibly rude and passive aggressive when I tried to ask questions about signing up for the class. I was a new student and I was not used to the online format, there were many steps to it and they did not want to help me what so ever. I was kind and polite but did not receive the same treatment back. I thought it was very unprofessional since this is my first experience with this college. Anyways I decided to drive all the way to the school to solve the problem, the staff at the library were night and day compared to the ones I encountered over the phone. They quickly answered my questions and set me up as a new student. I paid for my live scan and was one of the first few students on the list. Out of the blue and without warning I get an email that I was dropped from the class. I was puzzled since I followed all of the steps that were laid out in the packet and even bought all of the gear. I called and the same rude people informed me that I was dropped from the class because I did not pay for the class. I would have been more than happy to pay for the class but I was not informed and it did not make sense to me from a logical stand point why I would pay for a class that I am not OFFICIALLY enrolled in. The school should get rid of the current staff and place new members in charge of the P.C. 832 program. read more

Amazing campus!! The library is amazing, their new buildings are super nice. The professors are very helpful and want you to succeed. I've been so lucky to have the best who have helped me succeed in class. Before attending VC I used to attend SBCC and I must say Ventura College has high quality professors. EOPS counselors are super helpful, I really like their 3 appointment system and how they make sure you take the classes you need and not just any random classes that won't benefit your transferring or graduation etc. The food trucks during lunch are a big plus since we no longer have a cafeteria. Seemingly a good school, definitely nicer than the last community college I attended. The campus has some cool technology to aid in teaching I haven't seen anywhere else. Construction is under way to improve some of the older facilities. I wouldn't take second semester calculus here over summer unless you love math and hate having a social life. I have had the displeasure of attending community colleges in the Los Angeles area for first 4 years right out of high school. It was a complete disaster, Mt.San Antonio college and Citrus college made me never want to go school ever again...until 6 years later when I first attended Ventura College. Vc has been the best community college experience I have ever had. This school takes away all the distractions that are present in schools in LA, like: traffic nightmares, parking nightmares, long lines and inaccessible administration services and at Vc rarely do things get mishandled. Classes are easy to sign up for, the online program that runs much of the students records, dates and schedules is very good. I have also attended Oxnard College but hands down, Vc is the best. read more

Enrollment process is horrific. It's official they are worse than the DMV. Everything is supposed to be easy on the website. Reyes to sign up for a math class multiple times, useless, useless, useless. Back and forth to the school multiple times to try and get it straitened out. Around and around in circles trying to sign up for one damn math class. Who ever runs the enrollment process has no business skills and no opportunity for any feedback. It's like trying to watch a rancher herd cats from horseback. I would love to give someone some thoughts for improvement but there is no place to go and no one cares. The whole student services building is about showing how many students they served rather than actually offering services to students. I had to sign into assessment each time to 1. Ask for an appointment to take the test. 2. Be directed the following day to which building to take the test. 3. Sign in again to take the math assessment test. 4. Sign in again another day to get the results. 5. Come back again and sign in to get them to explain what the results mean and what to do with it. All of this to take a refresher on a course I to 30 years before. After all that "You can't take it again, you already took it and passed, if you want to retake it without credit just audit the class". Would have been wonderful bit of news to start with. Did I also mention the website sucks. Everyone agrees it's a joke but everyone's answer is that's what we have and it's always been that way. Nothing but Orwellian bullshit. I finally did get into a class with the help of one kid in registration I do owe him a debt of thanks. Get this though it all came down to filling out a small carbon copy registration slip. The same slip I filled out 30 years ago before the website, before the internet, before all the automation. What the they have now would be one hilarious joke if I wasn't actually having to live the horror of it all. If it wasn't government funded and had to be run as a real business they would be broke in a week. Given a real choice with our tax money no one would put up with it but it's the government and they are here to help us. As a final note, finishing my registration I went over to the bookstore to get my book. Yes it was open. No books. The guy at the counter thought I was nuts for expecting to get my book at his bookstore on the same day as registration. Yet again I was told that's the way it's done it's always been that way. I swear not one of them know what it takes to run a business. I'm sure more is to follow. read more

Most instructors at VC are pretty good. The staff in the student center, however, are absolutely TERRIBLE. They make you feel like an idiot and a total burden for asking questions. I avoid the student center at all costs even if it means having to guess what classes I have to take. Seriously. The staff in here is just mean. And you are an absolute inconvenience to them. What a great "student" center. If the school was just based off that, I would never go to VC in a million years. BUT, there are some redeeming qualities. Most of the professors I've had are willing to work with you to make sure you do well. I'm not sure if you would call it ASB, but the student council I suppose is really wonderful and puts on some cool events for students. The campus is relatively easy to navigate. Parking can be a drag, but I'm always able to find parking on the street so I don't have to pay for a permit. The biggest bummer about some classes is the first few days there won't be enough seats. I had to sit on the floor of my class the first couple of days. That definitely sucks and makes me wonder why I'm paying the money to be here. But all in all, it's a community college. It's not horrible, it's not great. read more

My first 2 years at VC I was very impressed with the campus , instructors and overall impressed with this college . However since then this place has gone completely to hell . The registration process and dealing with the financial aid office is a nightmare . Parking is a complete joke that's including motorcycle parking . Ventura College can be a great place to learn with many great instructors. I have been there for three semesters and I have only have had 1 terrible teacher, 1 okay teacher and 1 bizarre teacher. That can be much better odds than most schooling institutions. There are some very difficult classes like anatomy but if you put in the work you will do well. At all costs avoid the anatomy instructor Benhanz!!! I had her as my lab instructor for anatomy. The entire semester she didn't have a single lesson plan or pass out any worksheets. We just stared at power points she didn't even make every week and eventually we would have a test on the models. These were very difficult. I also have taken anthropology there and I highly recommend Ms. Lange. She is a difficult teacher but is fun and teaches you quite a bit. It was the best difficult class I have ever taken. I also recommend Mrs. Ryno for statistics. It's a fascinating class and you get to conduct a statistics research project at the end of the semester. The online courses here are also very good and it is a great way to get in a few more units without having an overwhelming schedule. If you ever need help from administration avoid the curly black haired woman. She is useless and very rude to new students who are enrolling. You also have to shop around for a good academic counsellor. The library also has great places to study and the student workers there are very helpful and friendly. read more
