We've been coming to Venus Pie for a long time. I always labeled their pizza the best pizza in Spartanburg County. This was our first time visiting under new ownership. Overall the pizza is good. The sauce is either very similar or the same recipe as the previous owner. That was important for me. The dough might be a little different, but it's still not bad and for me that's enough. I'm not a crust person. As long as the thickness was right, I'm good. The staff is still learning their way. As I understand it the original staff could have stayed. I saw a lot of new faces. So........Venus Pie has been a go to place for us for many years. However within the past few months something has happened that has cause there to be a serious decline in service and food selection. In the past three weeks have tried to eat there three times and twice there was signs on the door saying no slices and one sign said be good to _________, he is having to work in the kitchen. Tonight asked if they had slices and was once again told, sorry we don't have slices. Is it really that hard to make slices????? I line the pizza but I'm not coming back for a while. Pizza exceeded expectations in every way. My wife and I got the "Colonel" (medium) for two of us. We ended up taking half of it home. This spot is a very relaxed pizza place. We have gotten full size pizzas before and the breadsticks usually but also the pizza slices . if you go here PLEASE KNOW the slices are HUGE. Absolutely huge. They do not inform you of this. I haven't seen it on the menu but I may have missed it. I ordered two slices and I was just absolutely shocked. I am so tired of hearing the whole "NY pizza" thing around here. If you think this is even close to NY pizza, you are absolutely clueless. It's horrible. The ingredients they use are cheap garbage, and the pizza is thrown together with zero skill or concern. It's dried out within minutes of coming out of the oven. It is barely edible at best. Their obvious claim to fame is that the slices appear to be real big. However, they are paper thin, so who cares. Also, the place is a run down hole in the wall. The other day, I was in the mood for pizza, which doesn't happen often, so I ordered the Gatherer (medium), and a small Spinner salad for later. I like to support small, local restaurants, and I've driven by this place many, many times. Why not give it a try, right? I'm just not sure where to begin. When you order their "specialty" pizzas, you can't make substitutions. I do get it; a specialty pizza is a specialty pizza. So subs on individual ingredients change the whole thing. That said, the Gatherer pizza cries out for a WHITE sauce; the red sauce is too seasoned, and too sweet, for the artichokes, etc., on the pie. It's very jarring. Changing the sauce is not a huge deal, and an easy thing to accommodate. The red sauce on the pizza absolutely ruined it for me. It drowned out every single other flavor. That thin and crispy crust? Try tough and chewy. Doughy, even. Basically inedible. They must get a huge discount on banana peppers. Way too many on the pizza and in the salad. In my salad, I had one thin, half-slice of tomato. Lots of black olives, but no mushrooms. I had a single quarter chunk of artichoke; I had a ton of banana peppers though. Not good. No balance. I paid $5.50 for a salad that was small and badly made. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and I guess, in the end, that's okay. Because I won't be ordering anything from Venus Pie Pizzeria ever again. From the outside this place almost looks as if it is never busy but once you go inside you get a rude awakening. This is most definitely a live place with a cool atmosphere that will appeal to all ages and classes of people. The only recommendations that I will give here is dont order a whole pizza just order you a slice with your favorite topping and dig in because the size of a single slice is a conversational slice to begin with then once you get your first taste then your hook. The flavor is unique and very very good. The second best thing is the awesome price, my family of five can eat with drinks all for 40 bucks and still have food left over. And the greatest thing is that this place isnt a big chain store its locally owned and operated with very polite employees who are extremely accommodating to each customer without a doubt will always make sure your given the best service around. Their pizza is great and the (single) slices are massive, about as long as my forearm. Very affordable, too. They also had a nice selection of beers/ciders written on the chalkboard wall behind the bar. Small mom and pop shop near downtown Spartanburg that has a nice overall vibe to it made complete with friendly staff. This was my first time trying something other than their calzones (which I also recommend) and I was not disappointed.
