So, I'm a sucker for fliers on my windshield. True story. Especially when those fliers advertise $22 mani/pedi special 3 blocks from my home. Sold! So I wandered over there yesterday in hopes of scoring a late afternoon pick-me-up/study session. This little shop is under new management, and despite the exterior (sandwiched between a convenience store and a Evangelical church) it is pretty clean and tidy on the inside. The pastel purple is a bit of overkill, but...so it goes. I was taken back for my pedicure. It was OK, but as a woman who has indulged in many a mani/pedi combo, I could just tell she wasn't so sure of what she was supposed to be doing. A+ for effort though, and she was sweet as pie. All in all, the nails turned out fine...I just spent a lot of time worrying that I'd have to go somewhere else and have them "redone." Now, the very interesting part is the owner...a bubbly Indian woman in her 50's with a flair for hair removal. She is passionate. I got to witness a stream of women coming in, and each time the owner would basically try to persuade them to remove all of the hair on their bodies. One poor lady just came in for an eyebrow threading (recommended, the woman did them expertly!) and ended up getting almost her entire face waxed. As an added bonus, after the woman with painful tears running down her cheeks left....the owner brought over the wax paper with hair, and SHOWED me how effective it had been. Um, gross...sorry, I'm all about beauty at relatively any cost, but not other people's "beauty" remnants on a wax strip. Ick. I will go back for threading though, $7 is a steal. I just am not letting her anywhere near the rest of me. However, I say give this place a try. Very cheap men's haircuts ($12), and my manicure is actually quite nice (and cheap). In fact, I went with a lighter pink due to the warmer temps and not wanting to appear "drab" with dark nails...I tipped over the polish to see the color, and it said "rosy future." It was sort of the sign I had been waiting for on this particular day....so 3 stars (and cheers) to the future. After all, Venus is the god of love and beauty. Sigh. I got the keratin treatment and comparing it to other treatments I've gotten in the past, this one is the best. My hair feels really shiny and soft. Added bonus is that the eyebrow threading is amazing! First time getting mine done and I'm 100% hooked. Just on the threading alone they will have me as a regular now. Came here using a Groupon and because of how they worked out the deal with the company, I had to pay an extra fee because my hair is shoulder length. The fine print on the Groupon did say "special fees may apply." I guess you have to take that seriously if you're using the Groupon here. The ambiance is not like that of the "fancier" salons, but that's aligned with the price range. Also, if you made it this far reading my review, one other thing that was cool to witness: A really unpolished girl walked in asking for a job. She was audibly chewing gum and wasn't prepared to answer typical job questions like "do you have experience working at other salons? have you gone through beauty school?" The manager said, "Please show me what you can do" and allowed her to do the assistant's nails. After she left I commented "she seemed unprepared" just to make small talk. The manager said "yes, but I still want to give anyone a chance to show me what they can do." I think the world needs more people like that. read more

Consistently awesome results when I go here to get my eyebrows threaded. Elena is an awesome addition to this salon and has fantastic experience. She did a great job for my highlights/lowlights for my blond hair. You cannot beat the price, as they are always running specials and trying to revamp the business. Let me preface this with two things: my review is based on the Keratin treatment I got today. And I am so happy that I am taking time out of my day (my 30th bday to write this review) Don't always believe the bad reviews, I'm glad I didn't cause I found a great place and saved a bunch of money. So first of all, I have super frizzy hair and I have been getting keratin treatments for the last 6 years. Global keratin is by far my favorite, but... the original treatment. Not the newest one that came out (called the best). So I purchased a Groupon for the GK treatment but I called Venus salon before to make sure that they use the original formula (which does have fumes and that's why a lot of places don't use it anymore) because i got the GK "the best" treatment and I was soooo unhappy with it. It left my hair feeling like the "la brasiliana" treatment which left my hair feeling as if I had fly trap glue stuck to it. No matter how much I tried to wash it out, it smelled bad and left my hair texture feeling gross. I literally washed my hair 18 times in one day with everything you can think of : hand soap, bar soap, body wash, Castile soap, shampoo, conditioner, face wash just to get the nasty smell and texture out. That helped a bit. So that is why I called Venus salon, spoke to Zeba and said they use the original formula. She did also say that depending on my hair texture and length, there may be an extra charge. I already knew that since I have super think frizzy hair so I was expecting the charge to be another easy $80-100 and I was ok with that. She couldn't tell me a price over the phone because she had to evaluate it. As many of you know, even when you go get a dye job you may get charged more depending on how much the stylist needs, so same goes with the keratin treatment. So I called and got an appointment the next day( today) and when I got there I was pleasantly surprised. It is a no frills place nothing fancy but I thought hey, would i rather have a fancy place with someone that doesn't know what they're doing or a normal looking place with someone that knows what's up. So Zeba greeted me and evaluated my hair. She said it would be an extra $40 (super fine with that because other places have charged me well over $80 for the extra product needed to saturate my hair. So we got started right away, wasn't busy at all. I am super pleased with my results. Zeba really took her time and did not rush while applying, blow drying, or straightening my hair. I have so much hair that the whole process took 2 1/2 hours. During that time she was super friendly and explained a lot of the process to me ( you can tell she is very educated in what she is doing). I love the results and my hair feels great, doesn't have any sticky residue and she got my roots which needed the keratin the most. Compared to the prices in my neighborhood (east Lakeview) Venus salon has VERY reasonable prices. Their no chip manicure is only $20. Would I come back here ? Definitely. She told me that the next time I want to do a keratin treatment it would be $150. That is a great price ! read more

This is a 5 star review if you care about looking good and the finished product over ambiance. I look fantastic! I came in on a deal find promotion for partial highlights and a hair cut. Elena was my stylist, and my highlights are exactly what I wanted, caramel, a touch chunky, the color works wonderfully and brings out my eyes and the haircut was great. I have curly, damaged and coarse hair that is always difficult to tame. There is no ambiance, the neighborhood is uptown, it's borderline tacky but I look like a star. If you care how you look and not the salon Venus is great.I decided to try there instead of competing for parking at Lincoln Park and some other more trendy areas. read more

The only good thing about my experience here was the massage I got with my pedicure. To say everything else was subpar is an understatement. They didn't know where the right brush and acetone were to do a french pedicure. Didn't think that you need some sort of lotion/scrub/soap to use with the pumice stone thingy for the foot scrub and on top of all that, I'm there trying to relax while the girl was doing the foot and calf massage and the owner comes over and starts asking me personal questions. God! I don't want to talk. I just want to chill. Overall, they don't seem to know what they're doing. So just don't go...though eyebrow threading was decent (not great). read more

Its been 3 months since I had it done & my hair is still silky smooth. I have been to fancier salons & never returned because the attention was not there. Awful, the worst hairstyle ever!!! She cut my hair wrong, and then gave me a perm so bad that it burned my scalp and forehead! She also gave me highlights. I have dark hair, and she left them on forever, so now I look like a zebra. The hair is ruined. Further, the stylist spend the entire time talking badly about the owner, and then midway through my cut, a woman came to complain about her bad color job (also awful.) My stylist screamed at her and then threw her out. She tried to charge me $180 for the cut and perm. I am complaining to the better BBB I do not believe these women are licensed professionals, and I am going to demand a refund, although most likely, they will also throw me out. Meanwhile, I am going to have to pay to have my hair cut as short as possible, relaxed, and colored, to get rid of this awful orange frizz and zebra stripes. I went in for a haircut and thought it was only $15 dollars and it ended up being $18. That was a spray bottle of water and a straight up hair cut. I went there because it is local but I don't know. I've had a pedicure there. It was fine but not great. I think they may need more experience. read more

This is definitely a no frills salon but their eyebrow threading is the best I've had done. Their prices are great too. I've had no problem with getting service with a walk-in. If I want other services, I try to schedule. I do have a few complaints with this business. 1. They always try to upsell you on a facial. I don't want a facial. I've had one there. They aren't that great and the room is way too bright. Please stop trying to upsell. It's annoying. 2. They don't have a proper massage table with face cradle. If they did, I would be there all the time getting massages. Please get one! 3. Their mani-pedi was terrible and starting chipping almost immediately. It's probably the one thing the younger lady wasn't an expert at (she does everything else with amazing skill). I really wish they would spend a little money to upgrade their facilities with proper lighting and equipment. I think it would be rewarded with increased business. read more

Best place for threading, absolutely! I have super sensitive skin and can only thread or tweeze my brows. (Threading gets more hair than tweezing -- and is faster and less painful.) The owner does an absolutely incredible job and the price is absolutely perfect -- $7! Beautiful results, every time. read more

My appointment was at 6, but the lady didn't even show up to the spa until 6:20. The staff is really friendly, but that is the worst manicure/pedicure I have ever received. The lady who was helping me was completely clueless, but very very sweet. She had trouble seeing so decided to go grab her glasses. Continued to have trouble seeing so she had to go grab a lamp and put it by my feet. I was terrified to let her cut my cuticle since she could barely see. Ended up painting them with clear polish which ended up all over my toes. After telling her that I'd like to keep my nails squared shaped, she filed them into oval shapes. She began painting my french manicure and the polish was so thick it was sticking everywhere and had lumps everywhere. I asked her to use a different polish but she refused. I didn't even wait for my nails to dry, I paid, and immediately went home to give myself a home mani/pedi. I will never go back. read more

Terrible!!!! I went in last night for a trim and to have my bangs cut. I am now sitting at work looking like a have a mullet growing from the right side of my face. I have no ideal in the WORLD what she thinks she was doing! My hair is completly uneven and I had to ask her 3 times to stop blow drying my hair and check my bangs which she would not do. I finally jumped out of the chair and ripped off my apron. I've been there before for a eyebrow thread which was okay but will never go there again. I really don't think the lady who owns the place has any idea what she is doing. Plus she would not stop trying to sell me hair products the whole time. It was really annoying. I went for threading because this place is just 2 blocks from where I live. I was very apprehensive to try anyone new, but my girl left Hair by Mario, so I had to find somewhere to tame the brows. The first time was good, the second better, but the 3rd went wrong, and the fourth nearly stripped me bald. I loved that it is so close, and I like to help out struggling businesses, but it's too inconsistent for me. She even charged me different prices 3 of the 4 times. read more

This lady sucks. She has no clue what she's doing. She did my eyebrows and then was trimming them and cut a whole chunk off of my eyebrow, and right after she did it she goes, "OOPS!" really loud. Horrible experience! Went in with a friend for highlights only and highlights came out like if we bought a box from walgreens and did it our self. Our hair was blow dried frizzy and the price jacked up when we went to pay. Oh..we got our hair washed in freezing cold water and I also got my eyebrows done and got my skin cut along with it. i purchased a deal find $19 for a mani/pedi, the lady was doing eyebrows when i arrived on time for my appointment so she stopped and filled the tub and i let the chair massage me, this was my favorite part of the experience when she was finally done she started the extra long process of my mani/pedi. now this lady is a little older and very nice and because of this i stopped myself from spazzing out on her a few times. her filing skills lack as well as common sense it seems. when i was done with the 3 hour mani/pedi i had polish on my skin on both my hands and feet and that top coat stuff she used was to thick and was all over the place to my friend asked me if i did my nails myself. would i go back nope not at all read more

I got my eyebrows threaded yesterday by the owner. It was 10 bucks but on some days it is cheaper. She did a fantastic job. It did hurt a little more than usual and she told me, "beauty if pain" which is pretty hilarious. I like this place and would go back. They also have a lot of very good specials. I went to Venus Salon to get a mani-pedi using a Dealfind coupon. I ended up also getting a great haircut and my eyebrows threaded to perfection. I went there thinking I would just get the mani-pedi and never go back since it's out of the way for me. I left a loyal customer. The women that work there are wonderful and did a great job. The salon is clean and modern. The prices are so reasonable. I highly recommend this salon. read more

The facial is definitely worth the money! They run a lot of deals here and often offer a $60 facial for half off, only $30!! It's definitely, definitely worth the money. At that price, I will be going back every month to get one. Also, had my brows down. I have never tried threading before and was kind of skeptical that it would work as well as waxing, but she did a great job. Definitely recommend the facial and the brow threading.
