Booking was easy. Everyone was so friendly there's a cute little store for souvenirs with appropriately priced items. I purchased a very cute bangle. We also purchased food from the cafe there and ended up going back twice for their fries! They were so tasty!! Now on the train we boarded the Sycamore cart and Shea was amazing she kept the vibe high and energetic. She interacted with everyone and was very personable! The only feedback I'd give is to maybe shorten the train ride. 4 hours is entirely too long to go 40 miles round trip. At some point it becomes boring. Also requesting guests to get there 2 hrs before departure is nuts. If you're staying in Sedona or Cottonwood...DO NOT go that early! I don't think young kids or teenagers would enjoy this as much as seniors but I did enjoy my experience 100% The complimentary charcuterie and champagne was a great value as well! read more

Since booking the tour, it's been great because you get a food and drink voucher with your purchased ticket. There's ample parking once you enter the train depot, there's a museum and gift shop you can check out and their restrooms are clean. The train is well serviced to include the passenger cars, the venue itself is clean and well maintained. Just be mindful if you can spare 6 hours total, it's 3 hours one way, and 3 hours heading back to the station. You are encouraged to arrive an hour early prior to departure so you have time to eat your food and check out the site itself. What I also liked is I got a notification of possible road closures so the notification was helpful. Once on board, your seating number is on the tables. Also, they do offer alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks (sparkling cider) as well as a tray of crackers and fruit. Don't worry they do have restrooms on board. Overall the experience and scenery is worth it. read more

The good: We liked that each car has its own attendant, and the views were beautiful... especially from the open air car! Our waitress was fantastic. The bad: We thought we were getting a comfy sofa like the one in the online advertising photos. Instead, we were seated at a table with 2 chairs. Uggh. Don't get there 2 hours early, as told by staff. It's a scam to get you to spend money at the gift shop and LAME expensive take-out counter that is advertised as a, "Cafe"!!!! There are lots of cute restaurant options around the corner in the cute town. The main issue, however is the HORRIBLE SOUND SYSTEM. They play loud train song music so you cannot hear the simultaneously low playing muffled narration about the history of the area. To make matters worse, the poor fellow on the outdoor cart tries to yell over both of these to tell you cool facts about the rocks as you pass by them. Too bad you can barely ever hear what he is saying. He told us the volume is broken on the music feature. There's a bar code on the menu that says to scan it for historical narrative and pictures- don't bother. It doesn't work. We tried it, and the waitress confirmed that it has a glitch... been broken for months. Bottom line: This was an OK experience- somewhat overpriced and they don't let you get off the train when it stops halfway to turn around (Advertising online was misleading about this as well). We wished we had spent our time/money golfing in Sedona instead. read more

My bestie wanted do a birthday scenic train ride through Verde Canyon, so we made a trip out of it. Honestly, I had my reservations about it before going and thought it seemed overpriced and gimmicky, but it was actually a really perfect way to spend an afternoon, and I would genuinely recommend it as a great way to see the area. I think it was about 40 minutes for us to drive to from Sedona. They encourage you to arrive two hours before departure to enjoy some food and the gift shop. We instead rolled up about 45 minutes beforehand having already eaten in town, and that was plenty of time to do some shopping and board. We were in the Phoenix car which was clean and comfortable. Our ticket included a platter of cheeses, meats, crackers, fruit, and a delicious brownie. Had I known the "snack" would be so substantial I wouldn't have eaten so much before arriving. They also provide complementary champagne or cider to toast your departure, and you can purchase additional beverages and snacks after that. Every other car is open-air with covered bench seating for you to take in the view. There's a recorded broadcast of approaching sights, but it alternated between too loud and too soft for us to hear. I preferred the individuals working in the cars who pointed out favorite scenic spots, shared interesting history, and answered any questions as we went along. They were great hosts, and the three of us loved our experience! read more

We enjoyed the train ride but felt that a little more transparency is always a better idea than not. We purchase the food voucher and would have liked to have known that only breakfast was available and that for lunch you would need to wait until the train returns. I felt that should have been disclosed or on the website. We elected to not use the voucher and instead eat at a local restaurant indoors with a/c since we were planning on lunch. The options at the railroad are to eat outside in the covered area. It's still too warm in my opinion so lunch elsewhere is more comfortable. Also since the seats are pre-assigned other than shopping or looking around at the museum.... two hours in advance seems excessive. I do not recall it saying on the website that seats are preassigned. I would have rather known that in advance. I will say the staff is friendly. But sitting and waiting that long to board seemed like an unnecessary adventure. If we return we will not arrive two hours in advance and now that we understand the preassignment and food situation we would make a better decision on that. When you fail to disclose we are forced to trust your judgement and not ours. Once you board it's a fun adventure that you may want to consider. While we waited we thought when will this be over and some of the excitement wore off but Once on the train it's enjoyable. read more

This is honestly a must see for central Arizona. The Verde Valley and Oak Creek Canyon is the best parts of the state. The railroad gives a wonderful view of the area. The train is lovely and comfortable. I spent most of the tour in the outdoor car which gives you the full view. Royce was a wonderful guide and was extremely helpful. I would suggest the late train that comes back at night. Going on an old school train into the dark desert is neato. read more

We loved this train ride through Verde Valley and Canyon. You get a nice container of very good snacks and a champagne toast. You can have lunch at the train depot before you leave or take it on the ride with you. You can also buy drinks and snacks from the very friendly and helpful staff. You can sit comfortably inside or stand/sit in the open air car throughout the whole ride. The views are gorgeous . You go over old bridges, through a tunnel, and you see an abandoned town and train depot while the train engine switches sides. read more

A highlight of our Arizona trip. Arrive at noon to enjoy the pre-loading process. Byron was a 5 Star host full of historic facts and humor. Our bar hostess was super friendly. The white wine was delicious. The music and taped history playing was relaxing and enjoyable. Each person was given a huge snack. I would do it again. By the way, when you order your food online in advance, you need to stand in line in the gift shop to pick it up. You can eat before the train leaves at 1:00 at one of the outside tables offered or wait and eat it on the train. All of the food ordered was fabulous and fresh. My FIL LOVED the pulled pork sandwich. Way to go owners and managers of this establishment. read more

My friend and I just completed a wonderful weekend in the Cottonwood area of Arizona. Highlight of our trip was riding the Verde Canyon Railroad, truly one of Arizona's treasures. There was ample parking and easy access to railroad facilities. Entire staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to do whatever they could to make our trip pleasant and memorable. Preboarding facilities and train are well equipped and maintained. Our passenger car was modernly decorated with top quality materials. Lighting and speakers were well placed throughout the car. Toilet facilities were clean and up to date. The ride began with a sparkling wine toast. A box lunch was provided to all passengers, which included assorted cold cuts and cheeses, crackers and fruit. Additional food and drink was available throughout the journey. Tour guides told of flora, fauna, and geology as we traversed the canyon. We certainly enjoyed this excursion, and highly recommend it for people of all ages and abilities. It is a little pricey, but well worth the expense. read more

This was my favorite part of our premier tour. Try and get a two seat by a window. There is an open train and all trains have a bar. You will be searched for alcohol in your bags. Stick with a bottle of wine or beer- drinks are weak. read more

This train goes hour and half one way and then will come back. Service is amazing. The lady that did the bar in our part was really good and gave you great service. Also the guy that inform you about the canyon and surroundings does a great job and is very entertaining. I really enjoy train rides and was excited to see what this one would be like. I've done the train in Alaska from Anchorage to Seward and it was amazing but knowing AZ, I didn't have high expectations. We went during October for the awesome selection of craft beers and go a first class ticket. I haven't seen the standard class trains, but I truly think it's work the extra dollars to do first class. We had a comfortable living room set up with an outstanding charcuterie snack box waiting for us! We were right next to an open air car which is where we spent most of our time. THE VIEWS ARE INCREDIBLE!!! Wow!! I had no idea this existed and how gorgeous it was. Highly recommend and I'll be back again soon with more friends and family. read more

In a word... Boring. The food given just before boarding was not bad for the price and there was plenty of it. It was served in very sturdy plastic plate and cover container, so you could eat it on the train if you like or there were tables at the station if you want to chow down immediately. It was a crowded day when I was there so there were hundreds of these plastic containers discarded with no option of recycle bin. That is a lot of plastic to throw away everyday! Hope it was sorted later. The train ride on its own was slow and boring, and it takes 4 hours of slow train to nowhere, and back again. Yes the is some lovely trees and rock formations along the way, but you get a better view just driving down 89A. Could not wait to get back to the station. read more

Our group of 4 attended the Ales on Rails event and had a blast! We splurged on first class tickets and are really glad we did! The event started with a delicious German lunch featuring bratwurst or bison, served with mashed potatoes or in a bun. The food all day was really well done! We also got tickets to sample beers before boarding. The train ride itself was beautiful, and I LOVED sitting outside in the sun while taking in the views. Our server was hustling to serve the 30 people in our car and she did a great job! Our first class car was very comfortable with couches for each group. We also had complimentary appetizers and snacks. I would definitely recommend this train ride, and encourage you to get the first class ticket. The extra perks were worth the extra cost. read more

This train ride is definitely a must try! If you buy the whole package it's nice to eat lunch and have some beer tastings before getting on the train. This was a great way to see more of Sedona and enjoy time with friends. It's not a perfect rating for one reason. The train was probably only going max 25 mph the ENTIRE time. Making the ride 4 hours LONG. For the most part it was a great experience! The bartender was really nice and gave some historical facts throughout the ride and provided great service and drinks. I would definitely recommend taking a deck of cards to play or something to help with pass time. The first two hours were really exciting and fun to experience, but then it got really boring after the two hours. My cousin, Aunt and I took this tour. The gift shop at the station was great! Cute items, snacks, ect. Then getting on the train- friendly staff, VERY comfortable seating and even a great snack tray for each guest. There was an open air car that had benches that you could go out anytime during the ride and see everything and take pictures from an outside perspective. The guide was knowledgeable, and the bartender was fun. She took pictures of the kid that was seated near us when he fell asleep (yep-he got the rabbit ears). His parents were laughing at that one! This was the 3rd time on the Verde Canyon Railroad and it was just as enjoyable as the previous times. This time I had the occasion of riding in first class and the extra expense was worth it. You're greeted with a champagne or sparky cider cocktail shortly after boarding. There are also finger foods like sandwiches and chicken wings available for the first half of the ride. On this occasion, we were treated to a visit with a bald eagle, courtesy of Liberty Wildlife Rescue. Sonora was attacked by bees and fell out of her nest. With her broken wing, she was unable to be released back to the wild. The weather was beautiful! read more

This was a fun trip, but was too long. It seems like the train could go a little faster and you wouldn't miss any of the scenery. Our guide, Royce, absolutely made the trip worth it - he's five stars! We stayed inside for the first hour and that was probably a mistake - if we'd realized Royce was on the outdoor cart telling stories, we'd have been outside for the whole four hours. He was so engaging, told us great tales of the area, recommended books that gave more detail than he could cover and was just overall a really impressive young man.
