Our party of 6 stopped in on the way out of Louisiana for a plate lunch. It was late but there was still lots of food. In fact, they were still frying pork chops. I chose the red beans and rice, fried pork chop, Mac n Cheese, and potato salad with a dinner roll. It was all so hot and fresh and so well seasoned. The portion size was plentiful and for less than $10. As far as the taste, it was incredible. I mean the red beans and rice were phenomenal. The fried pork chop was cooked to perfection. The Mac n Cheese was okay and so was the potato salad, even though it was on the mustardy side. The dinner rolls tasted homemade. My aunts loved the cabbage rolls and the burgers. The patties were super thick. The white chocolate bread pudding is a must! Oh lord! No words!! But aside from the delicious food, the pride of Veronica's would have to be Mr. Alexander. He became my daughter's best friend when he searched for her some corn bread, heated it up, then served her some milk to try it together. I was in the area and have been heard by word of mouth about this place. It's a little out of the way and away from the highway, and may not look like much, but the drive is worth it! Unlike any other state in the US, Louisiana has strong ties to France. This is clear to visitors right at entrance to the state signs stating "Bienvenue en Louisiane" welcoming them. Most people who live here trace their ancestors to either coming directly from France or from French Acadiana. The ardent affair with food that folks in Louisiana share with the French is well documented. What may not be that well know is that just like in France, the State is dotted with small town restaurants and eateries that serve heavenly food. As in France, it is worth any visitor's drive to seek out these eateries that serve glorious food in these lesser known towns and villages. One such purposeful detour took me to Veronica's Café in Carencro. It is housed in a handsome house with a nice patio. The inside is lined with plastic chair and tables. The day's specials were hand written on a board and ready to be served behind the counter. With some gentle nudging from the kind lady behind the counter I settled for Smothered Okra with Chicken and Sausage, with the sides of smothered potatoes and beets. A generous portion size was served on a paper plate with a warm smile. I made my way to a table with my plate and silverware. From the very first taste of the smothered potatoes I knew I was in for a treat. Most potatoes in the smothered potatoes are mashed. But this one was made of thick slices of potatoes perfectly cooked in a a delectable sauce that was well flavored with sausage and herbs. It was delicious. The beets were nicely boiled and flavored. The Smothered Orka Chicken Sausage served over rice was divine. It was something the likes of which I have never had before. It appears to be a cross between smothered okra and a chicken and sausage gumbo. Some Cajun chefs have a penchant for using heavily spiced and smoked sausages in their Gumbo which can sometimes overpower the taste. Other times Acadian chefs tend to cook the gumbo entirely too long making the chicken fall apart and stringy. The chicken in the smothered okra dish was perfectly cooked - soft and yet retaining little of the bite. The sausage was delicious - not overpowering the dish, but lending a slight spicy smoke flavor. A dinner roll was served as well with my plate. I find this tradition of serving meat and sauce with rice and including a dinner roll on the side very endearing in Louisiana. One can never have enough carbs to mop up all the glorious sauce in the food here. The plate lunch was absolutely delicious and the service was basic but warm. I had to walk over to the counter to complement Ms Veronica. She modestly replied that she has been cooking since she was 10 years old. Although the experience shows in her dishes, I do think that she clearly has a gift for cooking and an attention to detail that elude most restaurants that serve plate lunches and tend to focus on quantity over quality. Veronica's Café serves very good hearty food that shall always fill a hungry stomach and soothe a weary heart. I drove away blissfully happy cherishing the tingle of a spicy aftertaste. Make the drive to this place my fellow eaters. You shall be rewarded with good food and a Joie de Vivre! read more

Now, going during the week is treat for huge lunch menu variety. I like the drive-through window and eat watching my favorite amazon series right now, Struggle for Life. They only do lunch/brunch/linner from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. close to I-49, drive through and go, a few words with friendly folks who own it, etc., or you can sit on porch or inside in small dining area. First time I've ever had meatball stew (rice, dark rich gravy) was here and it is the best in the area. Everything is cooked from scratch. Cornbread, fresh rolls. No shortcuts here! Great service. Even has a drive through. Parking is shady if you want that. Pretty front outdoor dining optional. Comfortable atmosphere. I often end up taking home part of my food so I get 2-3 meals out of just one! My husband often can't help himself and he often has to finish everything (I don't blame him).
