I had my manicure done by Long and pedi done by Lisa. I'm so happy with the way they turned out. Not only do they do a great job on your nails, they also give you solid foot/leg, and hand/arm/shoulder massages. My go-to nail salon in Berkeley! I shied away from this place initially because I thought there would always be a long wait, but the first time I went it pretty packed and I only waited 15 minutes. Other than this, I haven't really had a problem with it (I usually go on Friday mornings). Prices are good for gel manicures relative to the other nail salons in the area, and they work pretty quickly while being very attentive and detail-oriented. I also appreciate how patient they are while I'm trying to choose a nail color. They've offered to swatch the color on my nails, which although may seem like a small thing, isn't something I've been asked in a lot of salons I've been to. I can't speak for their acrylic work, but every gel manicure I've gotten here has stayed on for ~3 weeks, while at other places my nails start getting messed up at the 2 week mark. I have been coming here for YEARS and recently it has been really bad. Why are my nails coming off after paying $40 for their length? My friend can do my nails better than this and they last almost 2 months. I had a thought to go back a have them redone but at this point I would just be wasting more of my money I can spend on something else. MAKE APPOINTMENTS IN ADVANCE! This place is always super busy. I've been here 2 or 3 times before but decided to go in again today because my go-to nail salon was closed today. I was a bit disappointed by the efficiency of the service. I came in for an acrylic fill and a pedicure. Not only did they make me wait over my appointment time, but they also took 2 hours for my entire appointment. An acrylic fill and a pedicure should usually take only 1.5 hours max at any other salon but they made me wait so long to switch from the pedicure chair to the manicure station. I understand that they like to keep business up by booking as many customers as possible, however I think they should consider accepting less customers if that means their efficiency and quality of service would increase. When you're in there, you definitely feel like all the technicians are working as fast as possible to try to get as many customers done as they can instead of being a relaxing environment. My go-to nail salon in Berkeley! Versailles Nail Spa is right off of the 51B Ashby stop and has reasonable prices for nail services. Their selection for non-gel is mainly Essie and OPI, which I appreciate, and I've always been able to find the color I want. I've never had an issue with any of their technicians for gel manicures or pedicures - they've always been attentive and careful when trimming my nails. One of the perks here is the massage at the end of your appointment. I'd highly recommend calling and booking an appointment beforehand however. Even when I do so, usually I have to wait about 5-10min when I show up since it's always so packed since they're that good! That's also the reason I'm giving them 4 stars, since the salon is pretty small and they're always crowded. The first time I came for acrylics and made an appointment. The nail tech was rushing and the nails were different lengths, so I had to file them myself at home. The second time I walked in to get the acrylics removed and have shellac put on. It wasn't busy as it was a Tuesday afternoon, but I waited almost forty five minutes. They were very busy but still got us in as walk-ins in less than 20 min, and even in chairs next to each other so we could chat. All the work was good; especially the shoulder massage! They have a wide selection of colors and polish brands, prices are reasonable, and I've always been satisfied with my manicures and pedicures. They take walk-ins, but I've always made an appointment when I come. Versailles is located conveniently on College Ave., and you can either walk or take the 51B, which will drop you off almost right in front. One caveat: simpler designs are fine at Versailles, but avoid asking for anything too fancy/complicated (ex: designs with tape, etc.). They pretty much free-hand whatever you ask for with polish, so the more elaborate your design, the less likely you'll get what you had in mind. read more

Oh Versailles! Whatever happened to you? Today I had literally the most horrible experience at any nail shop here. I am not one to post any negative reviews unless very worthy of one, and here it goes. I had not been here much since COVID at all and had started going to another nail shop instead as this one has been so busy. This is a nail shop that I would refer all my friends, visitors, and anyone I run into that asks about nails. I would always say that this is the "best nail shop in Berkeley." I have not really been here since late 2019, as I said, and today I went for a gel manicure. I was given a nail tech that began very nicely with me, she provided me hot water and another nail tech Brought a small heater because it was super cold. And we were off to what I thought was a great start to a relaxing time. Well, the first indication that things were not going well was when she began to file my nails very painfully with a very dirty and jagged looking nail file. It was the roughest nail file that I had ever felt in a nail shop. It was not sanitized only the nail tools were autoclaved but the nail files had other nail marks on them. When she was filling and painting my nails she used gloves and her nail on her thumbs were so sharp that they were going into my fingers. It was so crazy painful that I had to tell her that it hurt. She did not know much English but she understood that I was in pain and she did move her nail to a better position after that. I had fingerless gloves on as it was cold outside and I decided to put them back on in the drying phase of the gel polish. The tech took out two nail UV dryers and began to dry my nails simultaneously. I noticed that my fingers were getting extremely hot and even during the top coat phase I had to pull my hand out and I even made a sound as it was so painful. I had never experienced a UV/LED dryer that was so powerful and hot. I looked around the shop and it seemed that everyone had one. But my tech was keeping my fingers in there for sometimes over 2 minutes each hand and I asked her how much longer as it was hurting so much. She got up suddenly without even telling me and began to massage my shoulders and put her hand down my back with that nail out of the glove and it was rubbing so hard on my shoulder it hurt badly. I tolerated that part but my hands were still in the UV light and they were burning so I told her how much longer and she told me to take out one of them. There was no timer or any other auto shut off that I usually experience in other nail shops. Afterwards, I told her that my fingers hurt. I am not sure if she understood me. When she was done with my gel manicure my fingers looked like raisins and the skin that was exposed looked bubbled up. I was petrified! I had gone to get a manicure and come out looking crazy on my skin. she proceeded to put oil on my hands. Nothing felt good. It was burning. I wanted to tell the store owner about this as I had been her customer for years before (she didn't recognize me). She was doing someone's acrylics and I asked politely if I could speak to her. She did not get up but continued working on the customer and so it left me no choice but to share near that customer what happened. The shop owner got very defensive with me and she kept saying that my own skin already looked like that. I went out to my car and when I looked at my hands I nearly cried. They looked like raisins near the nail beds. I am actually pretty afraid that this is permanent damage on my hands. I went back in the shop and I asked her for a receipt for my services as I paid all cash and even paid her tech a large tip. She gave me a receipt with no name of the business begrudgingly, she continued to defend herself and did not even listen to me at all for me to tell her that the tech was keeping my hands in the light for long periods of time like over 2 minutes at a time! The customer she was helping asked me if I "tried to wipe it off." and I told her that this is not something. you can wipe off. There was dark blackened marks on the sides of my fingers and the shop owner said that I "worked in my garden." I told her I did not have a garden nor did I have that when I came in that her light damaged my skin and my hands were hurting. the customer that was with her's mother came over and was upset that I was near her child and I told her that I did not want to be involving myself with that customer but I was near there primarily because I had no choice as the shop owner failed to even come over to me personally. When I came in the second time she asked me to go over to her long time customer to show. her my hands. The customer looked and said "yes, it does look red and irritated." I am completely appalled at this experience! And if my hands don't heal I will take action against this shop. read more

Very accommodating to make an appointment last minute. They have like ten or more pedicure chairs that they will every other one to maintain social distancing. Everything was clean and they opened a freshly sanitized kit of tools each service. They have a lot of people on staff so if you choose a manicure and pedicure they can do it simultaneously. I was excited about my first visit here after hearing good things about this place. I had an appointment for a Saturday but that didn't seem to make any difference and I had a short wait. The lady who did my nails, although distracted with answering phones, did a very good job --or so I thought! When I walked out of the salon I was very happy with how my nails looked. Unfortunately, within a week, they were chipped. Gels usually last me at *least* two weeks. They were pretty fast to get us in (called ahead and booked a 5:00 appointment on Sunday) Pros: - variety of colors to choose from! (3 huge racks in the back) - very clean and professional looking since it was recently remodeled - ladies are all super sweet - they give a little shoulder/arm massage with every mani (feels nice but is not at all like an actual massage) - manicure and pedicure itself was normal (no bumps, chips, etc. in polish) Cons: - very overhyped in my opinion...nothing super special about this place - they were rushing everything...it didn't feel relaxing or special at all because of it - they used cuticle oil for the hand/arm massage which didn't feel and smell as nice as lotion - not sure if they reuse their pumice stone for feet on different people (they added it back to the same kit after finishing mine)...if so that's very unhygienic - charged the regular $35 for a *male* mani/pedi combo (every other place I've gone to is a little cheaper for guys since they aren't getting polish usually) - very noisy because of how crowded it is (if you want a relaxing nail salon, this isn't it) Overall, place was not bad but also not super special.
