Best prerelease experience I've ever had. Showed up with my little brother (we're both very casual MTG players) still burned off a really terrible experience at a different store. We had been rushed, stomped by unfriendly players, and had generally had a bad time. Versus Games was the total opposite. The owner took time to help us build our deck, helped us get our decks ready in time, and walked us through helpful tips and strategies. The crowd was fun, casual, friendly, and helpful. We played great games and had a great time. The pizza next store was delicious. The card prices were reasonable, and my brother and I left grinning. MTG, a game that's so complicated yet so simple. I recently picked it up again and it's been really fun. I haven't built a deck in probably 18 years and the joy has not left. Yesterday, I decided to stop in Versus to pick up some land and a new card box to store my recent decks. D was super friendly and what was a simple transaction turned out to be a great conversation about old school and new school Magic. I went here for two MTG events - one for Draft and the other a Pre-release (Theros). Here's how it words, but may vary over time (double check, please!) Draft: M14 @ 4PM & 7PM Entry Fee: $11, Prize Payout: 4-3-2-2 Standard Grinder: @ 7PM Entry Fee: $2 Prize payout is in Store Credit $2, Pod of 8, 1st $10 - 2nd $4, 3rd $2 (Payout increases based on participation. ) They have a really great and friendly shop. If you're new at the store, expect them to be extremely friendly and helpful. The store is normally sold out and filled, so if you want to stop by for a Draft or something - call ahead to get a spot in or come in extra early - maybe they'll have a spot open for you. But don't worry - their 8-player Draft happens throughout the day, every day. And because there's a lot of people all the time at the store, you're never short of League players. Also, if are looking for something besides MTG, they have popular board games at the store and I heard that they do table top games as well. Overall, a great spot. read more

This is the first games store I've visited in SF, but I can't see any reason to want to hunt another down. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and let me know what events were running and when (and guided me to their Facebook page to find them in future), and the player base is both friendly and competitive when it comes to Magic. The shop is well-equipped for Magic -- there are boosters of all the recent sets in stock, and plenty of singles to choose from. Having drinks and snacks available is definitely a plus, too, so you don't have to leave just to get some hydration. There are other board and card games available, but M:tG definitely feels the focus. If I had to state one downside, it would be that there's not a great deal of room between tables, which can make finding your place during a tournament a bit busy as everyone tries to squeeze past one another. That's probably just a factor of the limited store space, though, and it certainly isn't a damning knock against an otherwise excellent venue. read more

Versus is really a top notch game store! The owner, D, and staff care not only about successfully running a store but also helping the gaming community thrive. While the store is most well know for its robust magic the gathering community, it also carries boards games. It's selection may be a bit more limited but it makes up for it by regularly having the hottest games sold out elsewhere in the city and online. Not only that but the store charges reasonable prices for its games. I have been able to get both terraforming mars and gloomhaven from versus even when the games are sold out online! Even though I live across town from versus, it's still my store of choice! Even better, you can always call ahead or Facebook message them to see if what you want is in stock. I think it's been said, but bears needing to be repeated. Versus Games is an awesome shop. D, the owner, is super friendly and always checking in, whether you are in the middle of a pre-release event to make sure you're comfortable and to engage with the players or if you are playing a casual game with friends at the shop on a normal day. D also has brought on incredibly friendly staff who are very attentive and just as customer-friendly as D himself. The shop is fairly spacious, even on busy event nights/days. Definitely recommend them for anything from just dropping by to play some MTG or test some board games, or for scheduled events like FNM. read more

My high school cousin from New York visited this place 2 years ago on their family trip. Apparently he doesn't know any places where he lives that will sell individual Magic cards. Since then he has asked family here if we are able to collect some cards for him. I have done a few times with no problems, and per the owner's instructions. But this past year when my cousin came back for another family visit, he did what I have done before, and when he got to the store, the day before going home, he didn't get his cards and the service was a little off. Didn't change the fact he still bought something there... I contacted the owner about the situation, since things could have changed and wanted to touch base with how odd it all was. He contacted me back the next day and apologized for any inconvenience. He contacted my cousin in regards to this request and was willing to rectify the situation. I am glad we were able to keep the communication open and I feel they made a solid effort to try to offer good customer service. Will likely be returning here. read more

This is the best MTG store in the city. The owner is very service oriented as well as the other employees. The membership prices are a pretty good deal if you are active. The community at the store is pretty good especially if you are willing to be a little more outgoing. The only thing I would improve about the store is the speed at which singles orders are met but I give them a pass since the store can be pretty busy. It's so hard to find specialty and hobby shops in the City and when one crops up, you can only hope that they stick around long enough so that they aren't taken out by big box retailers or online competition. I'm hoping Versus games doesn't fall victim to that because their store is fully loaded AND at an area that is easily accessible. Playing Board Games is my favorite past-time and after playing King of Tokyo, I knew I wanted the expansion. I looked online, but I didn't want to wait a few days. I wanted to be able to use each character's unique powers ASAP. I decided to head on over to Versus and lo and behold, they had the expansion in stock! They also had other obscure and hard to find board games there, including Dixit expansions and a plentiful supply of Star Realms base sets and expansions, which I ended up buying a playmat and collector box. The owner is super friendly and you can tell he's passionate about what he does. For such a small store, they're able to pack in tons of quality Board Games! read more

Pretty Disappointed. My wife and I traveled all the way in from Dublin (1hr 20 mins) because of all the great YELP reviews. As a former CCG and Comics game store owner, I was excited to find such a highly reviewed shop to spend my surplus income at. When we got there, the selection was small and focused, but ok. It looked like there was a decent amount of play area. A large flat panel was on the wall playing a movie. I used to be a pro-tour VS player and have been looking for a place to play the relaunched game in the city. They carried the product! I asked the gentleman behind the counter "Do you have anyone that plays Versus here?" "I don't know what that is." He replied. I pointed to the box. "Are you planning to run sanctioned tournaments/get the prize packs?" "You'll have to ask my boss." Who obviously wasn't there. "Do you have the Defenders expansion in yet?" I asked. "I'm sorry, I only do Magic." Now I was starting to get a bit flustered. "I only work the weekends." "Can you please look in your system to see if you have it in stock?" I asked him. "No, we don't." No service beyond yes/no; no bother to check when it might be in or whether I would like to preorder it. I asked him to price something else, he responded in same fashion. We left. Dude. It's your friggin job. Be nice to people, try to actually help them and make it a point to build communities, not keep to only one vertical. I get that Magic is the cash cow in many shops, but by building multiple communities of games, you'll do far better than you will with staff who quote "I only know Magic." Sadly, I doubt I will return since weekdays are not doable with my schedule. read more

A friend recommended this store to me when I started playing smash up. I was a bit weary of game stores because of my past experiences walking in one was a bit over whelming. When I walked in, the staff was so friendly. I was greeted with a friendly hello even thought he was busy. He took a couple of minutes to explain the game I was interested in. He seemed excited about the game as well. He excused himself to ring up his customers and thanked me for my patience. He also recommended different games to me and told me when the next gaming night would be if I would like to try it out. I've been coming here to participate in some of their Magic the Gathering events they have here. They are officially DCI-sanctioned events, so be prepared for some fun! While their official Grand Opening is actually only a few days away, this place has already been teeming with patrons during the past few weeks of their soft-opening period. I always find some good and friendly competition when I'm here to play Magic, so I hope to keep coming back for more especially for other types of games. Their management has been super friendly and helpful, which isn't always the case with "nerd-centric" businesses. It feels good to support a business that really appreciates its customers. As far as their other games, they have a good selection of popular table top games too. If you've seen it on that popular Table Top show on YouTube, they probably have it. Reviewing 90% as a magic player, though I also play board games, and have purchased at Versus in that context as well. I generally play Magic Online, due to time scheduling restraints, but I am extremely happy that Versus exists in the city. Great store for MTG. For premium MTG events, competition level is pretty high. For casual players, regular events or pre-release will provide a welcoming and friendly environment. Owner is a tremendously nice guy, and clearly invested in building a community, both of magic players and in his neighborhood, cross promising with local businesses for larger events. This gives SF players the chance to play in large scale events in a space-starved city, and brings some new customers to local businesses. Like a lot of SF folks, I RARELY venture out to this area, and have discovered several great eateries by virtue of playing at Vs. They have a humble but well-curated selection of board games. I assume they could order whatever you'd like if you enjoy supporting local businesses. Added plus, I've used their website to order things I needed to finish tournament decks and the cards were waiting for me on arrival. read more

I've been going to versus for a few months now. This is the only place in the Bay Area that has 2-3 dedicated Magic tournaments PER DAY. If you want the best flexibility and availability of store tournaments, its hard to bear. Staff and the owner are extremely friendly and helpful. Regulars are very friendly too. They sell snacks, card packs, accessories and singles too. Bonus: pizza place next door for a late night snack. Parking is easy to find too. This place is great! Versus Games is a new card/board game store in the sunset. The owner is so enthusiastic, friendly, and knowledgeable! It may not look like it at first glance but they have a pretty good selection of boardgames (settlers of catan, talisman, dixit, the walking dead, etc) and it's great that you can also play.. Local game store in the Sunset area, along Taravel. Like most parts of Taravel, parking can be a little rough - you'll often need to park in the residential or take the street car. The shop is pretty small, but they host pretty large events. Often they would hold events that span to the pizzeria next door to accommodate more players. It seems they usually have a large turn out for MTG events. It's owned by a really friendly guy, who I can tell has a great passion for games. He and the rest of the staff are very knowledgable. He recommended a game called Takenoko, which he knew off the bat that I would absolutely love. They carry a pretty decent selection of board and card games, and even some small local games. If you're on the hunt for a certain game, might as well support a local business and buy from Versus. You might even leave with a hidden gem. read more

The first time I visited the store it was just to look around with my friend. I came back three months later to look around again, and he still remembered my name. He always greets me when I am there and seems genuinely interested in the lives of his customers. Dee goes out of his way to help you and make you feel comfortable. The store is clean and well-lighted. It's cozy inside but you can tell it was designed for gaming first, unlike other stores where you have to wade through a sea of merchandise displays to get to the play area. There are Magic tournaments every day, with special tournaments on the weekends, usually happening once or twice a month. The store is popular, and on Friday nights/during weekend special events it's usually packed. This can make it difficult to get to your seat if it's by the wall. The store has a great selection of singles, and the prices are fair. The store is easy to get to (compared to other areas of the city) and there's a few restaurants in the area to go to in between matches. I can usually find non-timed street parking within a block or two away. I have played at a few different stores in the past two years. Often times, FNM is an collection of kids/socially awkward teenagers. The general age range at this store is college attendees/just out of college young professionals who take good care of themselves. The players here are more competitive than at other stores, but generally well-behaved and respectful. This is a good place to go to get better at playing Magic, while still enjoying social interaction. There are twelve different stores that are within a 40 minute drive for me (including one that's only 10 minutes away), but I like this place the most. read more

Wow! Why would anyone from the Bay Area ever need to drive all the way to San Jose again? This new Magic: The Gathering oriented game shop is really bending over backwards to meet the needs of the MTG community. Nightly drafts at $11.00? With great prize support? That's the lowest price in town. Basically, they take entries between 5:00-8:00PM, and once a pod fills up with 8 players, it fires. Every night. That's crazy amazing. They also do Standard and Modern the same way. 8 players and it fires. I saw some guys playing EDH so I'll have to ask about that, too. Store is biiiiiig. Big. Big. Big. Comfy seating and plenty of it. I am so sick of these tiny, cramped San Francisco and Oakland toy shops with one dirty table and someone who doesn't even play Magic running the event. The owner is a hardcore player (obviously, that's how he set this shop up so perfect), and so there's an amazing amount of space, and it's even CLEAN. What's that? Customers can use the bathroom? Like we're full grown adults and not ten year olds? Sold. Oh, and it's right by a ton of great places to eat: pizza, coffee, sushi, everything. Easy to get to and all that. Great friendly environment for people of all ages. The owner and staff here are very friendly and easy to chat with. Even if you're here for the first time they try to accommodate you as much as possible and actually make you comfortable. They provide daily events which is awesome since sometimes you can't make one day, you can hope for another. The tv is usually on either playing movies or sports which is a plus. From day 1 Dee (the owner) has been very welcoming and has established a great gaming community unlike many other game stores I have been to. I'm mostly a board game fan, so I was ecstatic when I heard they were so close to where I live. Their selection is rather limited to the most popular titles shown on Tabletop, but they are decently knowledgeable about their wares. They also had a 25% sale on their board games during the christmas season, which I definitely took advantage of to buy Mysterium (which was the only copy that I could find in the city). You'll find normal market price for most board games here, nothing absurd. They also have plenty of table space and seem to be rather open to letting people demo a game before buying. However, the place does get pretty packed (which is a good thing), but mostly of trading card game players (Magic, etc). read more
