A Place That Fails on Every Level, Safety, Integrity, and Basic Care I've eaten here multiple times and every visit left me, my friends and family feeling physically ill. Why? Because they use cheap low quality canola oil and it shows both on the palate and in the body. But the deeper issue isn't just what's in the food. It's what's rotting beneath the surface. A close friend of mine Brittney (17 and under age in this experience) reached out to the owner to explore a collaborative business opportunity. Instead of professionalism she was met with a shocking invitation to hot tub together. Completely inappropriate and wildly unprofessional. Even more disturbing are the longstanding sexual allegations against kitchen staff he's kept on for years. Employees are routinely fired often for things they didn't do while the owner claims surveillance cameras prove it. Yet those cameras never seem to catch actual wrongdoing. Convenient isn't it. Meanwhile he creates a culture of fear instability and dismissal. People are disposable. Boundaries are not respected whether in the kitchen or in conversation. This isn't just a bad dining experience. This is a pattern of neglect abuse of power and willful ignorance. I urge you support businesses that respect people, employees, customers and community. Overall, I had a good experience at Vertical Diner. It was one of the top listings when searching for vegan options in downtown SLC, and I was able to have dinner here on my last night. Interestingly, it was pretty packed so I was forced to sit at the bar. It felt a bit uncomfortable not having a proper place to keep my bag and heavy jacket. I had a hot tea plus my entree which was essentially a fried "chickn" steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli and brussels. Everything was filling and the gravy had good flavor, but the roasted greens---while fibrous and nutritious---did cause some unwanted bloat! By the end of my meal, I opted to have dessert back at my hotel since none of the options were that appealing to me. If I had a chance to come back, I would since there are still plenty of vegan options on the menu that I would love to try! read more

Sometimes you are just attracted to the aesthetics of a restaurant and you follow the lights and go in. That's what I did and guess what? I found the best 100% plant based restaurant! There are so many great options on the menu, just like any diner you'll find in the world but you can eat with a conscience. This restaurant is truly terrific! I love the cool vibes on the inside and the seating arrangement! They have mocktails, cocktails, beer and just tons of amazing food! I was a little disappointed because so many people have recommended this spot for vegan food in Salt Lake City. To me, it felt dated in many ways. I can appreciate the retro atmosphere, but it seems like they may be using the same recipes vegans were using in the early 2000s. In the mac and cheese for example, you can taste the nutritional yeast. Vegan food has come so far in the ingredients we use now that it's disappointing they haven't caught up yet. The plates would also benefit from a nicer presentation, I know not everybody comes for that, but it would be a marketing advantage for minimal investment. This place is the best! David was our server and he timed our orders perfectly! We had the mac and cheese bites as an appetizer which came out almost as soon as we ordered it. I paid $19 for a lentil burger and fries. As soon as I picked up the burger, it fell apart.. I tried eating it with a fork. Super mushy. Gross. Fries were super soggy and it's not like they should have been sitting there. I ordered over the phone and was there 5-7 minutes later. Weird energy when you walk in.. I do not recommend. It is important to state that I'm not vegan, nor do I regularly seek out vegan spots. But I was so enamored with this place, we went by twice in our short weekend trip! It's that good. Salt Lake City has a remarkable selection of vegan joints (my girlfriend looked), and this is one focused on delivery traditional diner fare in completely vegan form. It was sooooo good. The first day, I ordered their Chipotle Chikun Melta, effectively a faux chicken sandwich with lots of spice. It was messy as heck, but so yummy! My girlfriend got their "Moby," one of their 6 burger choices. Also, very messy, but spicy and yummy. I got their hand cut fries as a side, which were tasty and fresh. My girlfriend got their mashed potatoes and gravy as a side. The potatoes and fries were so yummy! We ordered their carrot cake to go, which we enjoyed over tea later. The next day we went back for breakfast at lunch (they serve breakfast fare all day long). I got the "Avalanche," consisting of a tofu scramble, home fries, tempeh bacun, and blueberry pancakes. All good, although I wouldn't say that the tempeh bacun at all resembled its namesake. Frankly, it was kinda weird. They have a great selection of local sodas, and a number of really good mixed drinks. The pineapple express--consisting tequila, pineapple, and some sort of bitters--is well worth the $8 (!!) price tag. The French toast was mushy and charred. The owner (Ian) needs to use the Vegan With a Veangeance "Fronch Toast" recipe from Issa Chandra. More help is needed in the kitchen. I ate twice at this local favorite during my visit to Salt Lake City. For breakfast, I enjoyed The Avalanche plate with blueberry pancakes, roasted potatoes, mushrooms, and scrambled tofu, along with Gunpowder Green Tea. For dinner, I ate the Green Bandito Burrito, which was good, but the side of Mashed Potatoes & Gravy stole the show. Carrot Cake is good, but was not served a la mode as listed on the menu. When I questioned the server, she said I had only asked for carrot cake and that I wasn't charged for ice cream. This was not true because because the receipt shows the same $7 price as advertised for a la mode on the menu. The restaurant needs to edit its menu to resolve this discrepancy, or serve ice cream with the carrot cake or pumpkin cake, as advertised. I also messaged this concern through the website. So tonight I went to the vertical diner for dinner. The food is very good. It may not be the healthiest in the world, (there were healthier options there to choose from if you wanted that) but it was satisfying for somebody who wants plant base Comfort Food. The menu was quite extensive. There were burgers, salads, eggs, pastas, chicken, wings, etc. I had the buffalo chickun tigers they were really really good.. but was disappointed because they were so cheap on the sauce (only a little of sauce at the bottom of the little basket ..but the flavor was good. For the main course I had the chicken and potatoes with gravy. It was very good a little bit too salty for my taste..but it's probably supposed to be a bit salty. The dinner came with roasted brussels sprouts and broccoli that was fried in a butter type flavor sauce./oil. The brussels sprouts and broccoli were definitely a five out of five stars, although I felt a little guilty because they were a little bit oily. The server was sweet, but the only thing that bothered me a little was that I felt like she was rushing me. She kept coming to the table every couple minutes and asked me can I get you something else? Can I get you something else? How is everything? Is everything OK. Can I get you something else? She even interrupted me while I was answering an important text to ask me an again. It was really annoying and I couldn't even relax even a little . Let me take a bite or two before you ask me how is everything. For me it was way too much. I felt like I was being rushed. If I was in a mad rush hurry, it would've been great( like at breakfast time) if you want to eat and get out in 5 minutes..but for dinner I want to relax a little bit. It was early in the evening so it wasn't like they were closing anytime soon, but maybe she just was trying to turn the tables quickly or maybe she's just used to going at light speed. But for me it ruined the experience. Either way vertical diner is good food for both vegans and non vegans to enjoy 100% plant based menu. It's definitely worth a try.. but just know that it' is not all the healthiest menu if you're trying to avoid salt and added oils, but if you're looking for comfort food or heavy food, this is definitely the place for you. The menu offered a wide array of vegan comfort foods for breakfast, lunch dinner or dessert!! It was really hard to decide but we got their mac & cheese which our server also recommended and I'm glad we got it. It was one of the best vegan mac & cheeses I've ever had. I got their special chicken with biscuits and gravy. Their biscuits and gravy are amazing and I really enjoyed my vegan chicken. Next, I'm always on the hunt for a good vegan French toast and I was really curious to try their carrot butter too. I do not like the baguette French toast. I would prefer a Texas toast or regular white bread. The baguette is just too hard and not enough bread to soak up the flavoring but if it would've been regular French toast, I would've loved it because the carrot butter is unique and amazing and I'd come back for that over and over again. One of my all-time favorite vegan restaurants, nationwide! First off, I love breakfast foods and diners. As a part-time vegan, it's very challenging to find great vegan breakfast food. First up, their menu is huge and pretty overwhelming. In typical diner fashion, there's breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in-between items. Top marks go to the Mac n Cheese and the biscuits and gravy - definitely some of the best I've had. The items that didn't quite impress me were the scrambled (tofu) eggs and french toast. Absolutely loved the food! My friend found this vegan spot to take me to when visiting in SLC. I really wanted to try the escargot mushrooms but they were out. Was so disappointed! However the fried Brussels were excellent as was the lentil veggie burger. The restraint was fairly quiet and we were waited upon quickly. It it a bit of a beaten down look but very clean. Bathrooms were clean as well. My major complaint was I paid cash and did not realize I did not get a receipt handed to me with my change until I got back to my friends place. Vegan comfort food at its finest! My sister lives out of state and this is the first place she wants to come every time she visits. Our go-to order is The Mountain, which is a cheezy, carb-y, pile of deliciousness with potatoes, your choice of vegan bakun or sausage, cheese, guacamole, tofu scramble, and sauteed peppers and onions. It's amazing. We usually opt to get it to go, and everything stays fresh and just as delicious as when you get it in the restaurant. The cheezy sauce is just amazing, I just recently tried to recreate it at home and while it was almost as good, nothing compares to the real deal at Vertical Diner. They have booth and table seating inside and patio seating in the warmer months. No reservations, and whenever I've tried to dine in, there's usually a wait. As a non-vegan diet customer having vegan food for the first time, you can't compare this style of food to the real deal. If you go in thinking it will be hard to distinguish vegan vs. real, you'll be disappointed. Inside, the small area did give a typical "diner" appearance. We were notified of their vegan menu upon seating at one of the booths by a friendly worker. I ordered one of the burgers with a bean/lentil patty. It came with my choice of a side: mac and cheese. The patty was really squishy and fell apart or shall I say "squished into a mashed potato-like texture" for more detail - not a bad thing, just a bean/lentil thing. It had little flavor, which is better than a bad flavor. The mac and cheese was much better. I would not say it tastes super "cheesy", but a light and creamy flavor. The almond parmesan was a good addition and added texture. Sadly, even with this positive experience, I cannot say I could give up my consumption of animals for this food. I was so incredibly impressed with the creaminess of the gravy and the biscuit for it not to have ANY butter or dairy !! Highly recommend to pair with the mushrooms. The tofu scramble was your basic tofu scramble, nothing too exciting about it. The fennel sausage was not really for me, as it was more of a burger patty-type versus a thin breakfast patty. It was a little mushy in texture but not terrible. Potatoes were your average country style. Service: Shoutout to AMBER! She mentioned she was newer, but we couldn't even tell. Used to be a big fan of Vertical, then they changed management and it got so bad we vowed not to go back. But... it's the only place in town to get a vegan breakfast, so we try it occasionally in hopes that it's returned to its glory days. We visited again this March and, while it's better in some respects, it's still disappointing. There are some new menu items, so I tried the Power Protein Bowl, which boasted "sauteed vegetables, tofu scramble, steamed spinach, brown rice..." It was pretty good, but for $14 I expected more than half a cup of rice, half a sliced carrot, a dab of spinach, and two tablespoons of tofu scramble. I mean, how does that little tofu even come close to being "power protein"? Service was friendly, so full marks there. But the portions remain ridiculously small for the prices. It's also sad that the bread offerings have diminished so much. My wife used to love the breakfast sandwich on multigrain bread, but now there are zero healthy bread choices. And don't get me started on the size of the pancakes or the amount of potatoes that come with your oder. read more
