Overall, I had a good experience at Vertical Diner. It was one of the top listings when searching for vegan options in downtown SLC, and I was able to have dinner here on my last night. Interestingly, it was pretty packed so I was forced to sit at the bar. It felt a bit uncomfortable not having a proper place to keep my bag and heavy jacket. I had a hot tea plus my entree which was essentially a fried "chickn" steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli and brussels. Everything was filling and the gravy had good flavor, but the roasted greens---while fibrous and nutritious---did cause some unwanted bloat! By the end of my meal, I opted to have dessert back at my hotel since none of the options were that appealing to me. If I had a chance to come back, I would since there are still plenty of vegan options on the menu that I would love to try!

100% plant based is a yes!

Sometimes you are just attracted to the aesthetics of a restaurant and you follow the lights and go in. That's what I did and guess what? I found the best 100% plant based restaurant! There are so many great options on the menu, just like any diner you'll find in the world but you can eat with a conscience. This restaurant is truly terrific! I love the cool vibes on the inside and the seating arrangement! They have mocktails, cocktails, beer and just tons of amazing food! We had the pizza, fries, mashed potatoes, and everything was delicious! The service was top notch and I definitely would suggest that if you are in Utah, go to visit Vertical Diner! I only posted a few pics of the menu but it is extensive!

Tempeh BLT with side salad! Delicious but wish I could have chosen the dressing.

Haven't dined in, in forever and the last time we got takeout was during Covid!! Figured we were long overdue for Vertical Diner!! We got delivery since it was so rainy!! Everything transported perfectly!! The did a great job packaging up the food! My husband got the Chicken Cesar Salad and I got the Tempeh BLT with a side salad. Everything was delicious!! Much better than I remember Vertical Diner from the past! Definitely need to order delivery or dine in more often!! I do love the diner vibe!!

It is important to state that I'm not vegan, nor do I regularly seek out vegan spots. But I was so enamored with this place, we went by twice in our short weekend trip! It's that good. Salt Lake City has a remarkable selection of vegan joints (my girlfriend looked), and this is one focused on delivery traditional diner fare in completely vegan form. It was sooooo good. The first day, I ordered their Chipotle Chikun Melta, effectively a faux chicken sandwich with lots of spice. It was messy as heck, but so yummy! My girlfriend got their "Moby," one of their 6 burger choices. Also, very messy, but spicy and yummy. I got their hand cut fries as a side, which were tasty and fresh. My girlfriend got their mashed potatoes and gravy as a side. The potatoes and fries were so yummy! We ordered their carrot cake to go, which we enjoyed over tea later. The next day we went back for breakfast at lunch (they serve breakfast fare all day long). I got the "Avalanche," consisting of a tofu scramble, home fries, tempeh bacun, and blueberry pancakes. All good, although I wouldn't say that the tempeh bacun at all resembled its namesake. Frankly, it was kinda weird. They have a great selection of local sodas, and a number of really good mixed drinks. The pineapple express--consisting tequila, pineapple, and some sort of bitters--is well worth the $8 (!!) price tag. It's a popular spot, so expect things to be a little slower at peak hours, service and getting a table.

This vegan joint serves up some delicious food! I ended up coming here twice and sorry, forgot what I ordered but definitely recommend checking it out. They have both an outdoor and indoor seating option. Indoor, they have booth style and a counter. For a diner, the service was acceptable.

Sometimes the food is good, other times it's not. No consistency, except with the pancakes, and tofu scramble. The biscuits are overbaked and dry with a hard crust on the bottom. The French toast was mushy and charred. The owner (Ian) needs to use the Vegan With a Veangeance "Fronch Toast" recipe from Issa Chandra. More help is needed in the kitchen. The prices are too high for poor quality food.

Vertical Diner is a haven. Comfort food, the guilty pleasure of eating a juicy burger. Onions, animal sauce, fries.... Followed by a milkshake. Plant shake? We loved it here. Would go back anytime. 9.3/10 for me.

Vertical Diner is a great restaurant, and they have a HUGE menu! I've been to the SLC location four times as of the time of writing, and I had previously been to their Portland location one time. The dude cakes is my favorite meal of theirs, so far!

I ate twice at this local favorite during my visit to Salt Lake City. For breakfast, I enjoyed The Avalanche plate with blueberry pancakes, roasted potatoes, mushrooms, and scrambled tofu, along with Gunpowder Green Tea. For dinner, I ate the Green Bandito Burrito, which was good, but the side of Mashed Potatoes & Gravy stole the show. Carrot Cake is good, but was not served a la mode as listed on the menu. When I questioned the server, she said I had only asked for carrot cake and that I wasn't charged for ice cream. This was not true because because the receipt shows the same $7 price as advertised for a la mode on the menu. The restaurant needs to edit its menu to resolve this discrepancy, or serve ice cream with the carrot cake or pumpkin cake, as advertised. I also messaged this concern through the website. Hopefully the owner or manager responds to it, or to this review.

The food here is TOO good. I felt like I was transported back into my childhood in Texas with flavors so western I almost had no idea they didn't put any darn meat in it! Sausage tasted like Sausage. Nuff said. ***Addendum Check out their sister chain- Vertical Deli (3245 S State St) for which this review was originally intended for. Cheers!

Generally, it's a challenge heading out for any meal when one is plant-based. I pick and choose off menus and generally get stuck with a vegetable or two. Not here. Anything and everything is plant-based. Bonus: Everything is so good, that even my "I hate boring bland food" man likes it. Yes, plant-based food can be awesome. Don't believe me? Head to Vertical Diner.

So tonight I went to the vertical diner for dinner. The food is very good. It may not be the healthiest in the world, (there were healthier options there to choose from if you wanted that) but it was satisfying for somebody who wants plant base Comfort Food. The menu was quite extensive. There were burgers, salads, eggs, pastas, chicken, wings, etc. I had the buffalo chickun tigers they were really really good.. but was disappointed because they were so cheap on the sauce (only a little of sauce at the bottom of the little basket ..but the flavor was good. For the main course I had the chicken and potatoes with gravy. It was very good a little bit too salty for my taste..but it's probably supposed to be a bit salty. The dinner came with roasted brussels sprouts and broccoli that was fried in a butter type flavor sauce./oil. The brussels sprouts and broccoli were definitely a five out of five stars, although I felt a little guilty because they were a little bit oily. The server was sweet, but the only thing that bothered me a little was that I felt like she was rushing me. She kept coming to the table every couple minutes and asked me can I get you something else? Can I get you something else? How is everything? Is everything OK. Can I get you something else? She even interrupted me while I was answering an important text to ask me an again. It was really annoying and I couldn't even relax even a little . Let me take a bite or two before you ask me how is everything. For me it was way too much. I felt like I was being rushed. If I was in a mad rush hurry, it would've been great( like at breakfast time) if you want to eat and get out in 5 minutes..but for dinner I want to relax a little bit. It was early in the evening so it wasn't like they were closing anytime soon, but maybe she just was trying to turn the tables quickly or maybe she's just used to going at light speed. But for me it ruined the experience. Either way vertical diner is good food for both vegans and non vegans to enjoy 100% plant based menu. It's definitely worth a try.. but just know that it' is not all the healthiest menu if you're trying to avoid salt and added oils, but if you're looking for comfort food or heavy food, this is definitely the place for you. I hope you enjoy. Personally I won't be back.

    Kiley M.

Pretty good vegan spot with all the classic comfort foods you may miss as a vegan! I wouldnt say anything we got was amazing, and I likely wouldn't return unless I had someone vegan visiting, but it's worth trying.

Ask the Community - Vertical Diner

    Do they have real meat?

They have "real good" meatless meat. It's a vegan restaurant.

Does this business offer gluten-free options?

    Yes!

Do they offer hot sauce on the side? For tacos or burritos

Last time I was there, they offered a variety of hot sauces - different types and levels of heat. Hope that helps! My daughter is vegan, so I've eaten there often. Enjoy!

Their chickpea bao buns with chipotle aioli blew me away. It was the perfect level of spicy and very filling without making me feel heavy. It seemed actually nutritious, so no need for the guilt after (that I saved for the cinnamon roll dessert I picked up at the same time). The price was also very affordable. I love how much variety is available here and that it's all vegan. I always feel spoiled for choice, I never know what to get because it all looks so good. There's a decent amount of seating inside. Their burritos and fries are my go-to favorites. The burritos are just top-notch, but I have a soft spot for their fries -- it's kind of an inside joke for me. Whenever I go out to eat with people, they always say, "Well, I know what El is having," because I always get fries with my food. But theirs are surprisingly amazing. Fries are usually just "fine" or "good," but theirs? They're very good. The owner is incredibly kind, and their baked goods are fantastic -- especially the peanut butter brownie, which I can't recommend enough. Their soft serve is also really good, and I'm excited to try some of their candy next time. I even took a non-vegan friend there, and he really enjoyed the food. Beyond the food, the team is so nice, and they have a little vegan market with some really cool products. I bought about half a pound of vegan bacon from them, and now I'm making all kinds of breakfast sandwiches at home. If you're in the area, whether you're vegan or not, Sweet Hazel is a must-visit. And if you can't stop by in person, their partner company Break Free Candy ships their sweets, which is awesome. Seriously, if you order anything from the menu, make it the peanut butter brownie. It's life-changing -- and I say that as a huge brownie lover.

When I arrived, it seemed like the kitchen was understaffed. The person at the front was doing his best to take orders and cook at the same time, which I respect, but it did mean a long wait for food. Another table that ordered after me was served first, and when my food finally arrived, the biscuits were unfortunately very undercooked--pretty raw in the middle. I was starving, so I ate them anyway rather than wait even longer, but it was disappointing. The vegan cookie I got wasn't very good either--kind of dry and bland--but again, I ate it because I was really hungry. The biggest issue, though, was the group of five people loudly rehearsing a play at full volume right in the middle of the restaurant. I totally respect the arts and love that people are creating things--but the entire time, they were projecting their lines as loudly as possible. It was impossible to read or relax. I was quietly working on finalizing the publication of my novella, and even though I was doing something creative too, I managed to do it respectfully and silently from my seat. I really think a different venue--or at the very least, a lower volume--would have made a big difference for everyone else there. That said, I'd still be willing to give this place another shot. The food has a lot of potential, and I think with a little more structure and a quieter atmosphere, it could be a great spot.

The staff was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was very clean. First of all, Muertos Cantina is a total vibe! The inside is so cool with fluorescent lighting, colorful decor and bottles displayed beautifully behind the bar. Even the bathrooms are worth mentioning! Each one is decorated differently with tons of bright colors. Seriously, each bathroom is like its own little fiesta sanctuary. Now for the FOOD! They start you off with fresh tortilla chips and a trio of salsas, and the chips were AMAZING (especially the flour chips). Each salsa had its own completely different flavor. The Red Chile Arbol had some heat, the Chipitle Lime Crema was smooth & creamu, and then there was the milder Tomatillo Verde, which was my favorite. Soooo good! We also tried the Agua Frescas. They were refreshing, flavorful and really pretty to look at. The watermelon was probably our least favorite, but to me anything watermelon flavored can sometimes taste a little watered down. The pineapple was definitely the winner because it was way more flavorful and satisfying. Then came the Elote Corn Dip. YUMMY! It had fire roasted corn, cheese, spices, crema, pico de gallo, cilantro and Tajín. It had so much flavor and texture. Definitely one I would order again. My daughter chose the Birria Ramen, and I think this might have been her favorite part of the meal. It had slow cooked beef birria, consommé, melty cheese and ramen noodles with cilantro and red onions, plus lime and radishes on the side. It had a little spice to it and was absolutely packed with flavor. She loved it! My husband ordered one of their burritos with a side of tater tots. The kid in him was VERY happy that tater tots were an option. And FYI the burritos here are HUGE. I ordered the Smothered Spicy Chile Verde Burrito, and OMG. It had braised pork in chile verde sauce with rice and refried black beans, wrapped in a flour tortilla and then smothered with MORE chile verde, melted cheese and chipotle lime crema. It was MASSIVE and SO GOOD! I honestly have yet to find anything in Reno that compares to this one. I would order it again in a heartbeat. And whatever you do, SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! We got the churro beignets, and they were fantastic. Covered in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with caramel and condensed milk... seriously, what more do you need? They were the perfect way to finish the meal. Muertos Cantina ended up being such a great first stop on our Utah trip. Fun atmosphere, really good food, huge portions and so many different flavors. The drinks are still just okay , a shadow of their former selves and I will never be able to accept the loss of my beloved watermelon margarita, the way they used to make it, but I will concede the drinks are decent. Service was fine. Parking is a hassle but that's just Sugarhouse. ‍ So yeah, I guess I'm back to "willing to eat here once in a while", from "I'm never eating here again".
