I took my young b*tch in because her gait went off and I didn't like her rear movement. I explained this to the vet. Without even an x-ray, I was told, "She could have hip dysplasia." Ummmm...Instead of testing to rule out things like, oh, Lyme disease, I was advised to proceed with hydrotherapy (for nearly eight months.) I took her to another vet, who ran a SNAP-test, which revealed (GASP!) LYME DISEASE! A course of Doxy, that cost me less than $30 for a month's supply, knocked out the Lyme disease that she had AND HER GAIT IMPROVED! I spent over $1k needlessly! No amount of hydrotherapy was ever going to cure Lyme disease! I had been taking my dogs there for over fifteen years, but, after feeling so disrespected, I won't be back. read more

She did not show up for 40 minutes at which time I asked for my records and left. I am a healthcare practitioner myself and would never show such disrespect to my own patients. The review is quite dated, but after moving to Boston and then California and dealing with many other vet teams, I realize this is long overdue. I'm surprised at the negative reviews I'm reading on this site, but if ownership hasn't changed since I used them in the early 2000's I believe you will be in good hands. Why did I love Vet at the Barn so much? Background - My dog was a city dog. Never off leash outside. Only off leash in pool halls and bars and home. He did not like dogs and never came in contact with any animals. Ever. Every vet since has pushed heartworm medication on me. I test my dogs for heartworm every six months which means that I will always catch an infestation in time to treat it. This is a much safer alternative to monthly poisons that will likely never be needed. Vet at the Barn never recommended preventative heartworm medication based on lifestyle and my own heartworm testing regimen. A vet that doesn't understand this protocol is either ignorant or greedy. Run. I don't give rabies vaccines to senior dogs. They totally understood. Every vet since applies undue pressure for this. Again, my dog was never off leash and had nearly a zero chance of coming in contact with any animal. The risk of him having a bad reaction to a rabies vaccine as a senior was far greater than the odds of him coming into contact with a rabid animal. This protocol isn't crazy. They don't even have a rabies vaccine in Europe. Lepto Vaccine? Every vet since just pushes and pushes regardless of what I tell them about their lifestyle. I've never met a vet team that took so much of my dog's lifestyle in to account when determining a proper plan for having a healthy dog. To summarize: Vet at the Barn is 100% responsible for the death of our young , healthy dog. Mistake # 1) In March, when my daughter brought her dog in for a regular check-up, Dr B found 2 lose teeth and told her to let them fall out on their own. What we found out from our most recent veterinarian was that the March blood test revealed the beginning of an underlying infection,that was overlooked by Dr. B. Mistake # 2) On Monday April 16, we brought our dog in to Vet at The Barn because he had a high fever and his breath smelled of infection according to Bev (the owner). After speaking about her personal problems concerning her son which took up most of the visit, she made an appointment for the next day to do dental surgery. I expressed my concern that day about doing surgery with such a high fever and infection present. She told me not to worry because she would be using only propofol, not anesthesia. She explained that with propofol there should be no concern about his ill health and surgery. What we did find out after the surgery was that she did in fact use anesthesia along with 2 antibiotics, an anti-inlammatory and sedatives. This put him over the edge and put him into an immune response. Mistake # 3) The morning of his surgery, my daughter was told to keep her dog home because Bev was running very very late, as usual from what I see on this review site. After the surgery, he had a horrible immune reaction and my daughter was told to rush him to Oradell Animal Hospital. Her personal problems clouded her 'un"professional judgement. Mistake # 4) No x-rays were taken because their X-Ray machine hasn't worked for years. As a result, when an X-ray was finally taken by another veterinarian, it was concluded that our dog had an additional 5 infected teeth and abscess which she missed. Mistake # 5) Not only was Bev responsible for doing surgery on a very infected dog with a high fever, but, because they did not have a working x-ray machine, she missed the other 5 infected teeth which resulted in a downward spiral, which culminated with his premature death. The protocol should have been to treat the infection first with antibiotics THEN have an X-ray done and do the surgery The last veterinarian we went to said it was inexcusable that the original infection was not diagnosed by Dr. B and he told us he could try to remove his infected teeth otherwise he would die but it might be too late given how much his infection had spread. He suffered in so much pain that he would scream for many seconds if you even slightly touched his mouth. Unfortunately it was too late for our poor baby. His infection was so far gone and suffering so much, that he had to be put down. We expect a full refund and so far Denise has not made any effort to do so. If not, one of our many options will be to file a complaint with the NY Board of Veterinarians. DO NOT GO HERE. You will be endangering the life of your pet. Many years ago, I brought my ill dog here and they botched an ear cleaning so badly that she was in wild pain and lost her hearing. I've been upset about it for almost 10 years, and I recently had a friend tell me about a horrible vet office experience with her dog. On a hunch, I asked if it was the Vet at the Barn, and lo and behold, it was. They misdiagnosed and mistreated her dog and she was so upset that they took advantage of her and her sweet, sick pet. My blood is boiling that this *awful* facility still exists and clearly harms animals on the regular. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN TO ANOTHER VET!!! TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL Took my dog to see the owner Dr. Beverly Cappel, she reviewed my dog and said she has classic thyroid symptoms. She opened a medical book and showed me a picture of another dog with this "issue". I had blood test taken, the vet tech a few days later called and left a voicemail that the dog was fine. I called back to speak to the doctor to see the next steps since my dog was ILL, I called every day for a week and she NEVER returned my call. My husband called, the staff claimed they gave the message and had no idea why there was no call back. We requested a refund since the dog was ill and no one was calling back with any answers or protocols. We were told we would get a refund, we did not. My husband called back and was told by Denise they will NOT give a refund. We have NEVER" encountered such UNPROFESSIONAL behavior by any doctor. Obviously they do not care about animals as they advertise. This was a referral from another patient, when I told them this outcome they were shocked and apologized. I would not recommend this Vet to anyone for any reason. read more

I had a horrible experience here. I was grossly overcharged and was told by their business manager that she would refund a portion of what I paid because Dr. Levin charged me for much more than I was told would go on (consulting experts because she was inexperienced treating my dogs disease, extra readings of X-rays multiple times, etc). After telling me she would review the bill and get back to me, I heard nothing. I called after some time passed and was told they changed business managers and she was swamped but would call me back and refund the money. To this day I've gotten nothing back and they have 1000s of dollars I paid for treatment that barely got started. Apparently others have had good experiences here, but I do want to warn others about what happened to me. read more

I went to Vet at the Barn for a long time with my geriatric cat. We were seeing Dr. Binkowski who was kind and concerned, although I do believe that she messed up at the end. Unfortunately for my cat, the last vet she saw at Vet at the Barn was Dr. Cappel, the practice owner. I immediately brought my 19.5 year old cat to Vet at the Barn when I saw she was having extreme difficulty walking (she had been in to see Dr. Binkowski twice in the previous 3 months immediately before this). Dr. Binkowski was out sick that day so my cat was seen by Dr. Cappel. I described to Cappel the problem my cat was having walking, as well as that she had begun to urinate outside the litter box and had a poor appetite. Without taking my cat out of her carrier, Cappel said she that was going to prescribe steroids for her. I had to ask Cappel to look at my cat. At my insistence, Cappel examined my cat (for less than a minute). She indicated that one of my cat's kidneys was enlarged. At this point, I asked her if blood work should be done to test for kidney function. Cappel said that it wasn't necessary, that my cat could do okay with one kidney. Cappel then put my cat on the floor and watched her (attempt to) walk. In a matter of seconds, Cappel concluded that my cat was still "interested in life". She said that the steroids would "reinvigorate" her very quickly. By the next morning, my cat could not move at all. I knew my friend's time had come. I called Vet at the Barn and said that my cat was dying and I needed to bring her in immediately. I was told that Cappel was running late (based on these other reviews, this seems to be a given for Cappel). I was told to call back. When I did, the receptionist relayed a message from Cappel saying that I needed to give the steroids time to work. I reiterated that my cat was dying and I needed to bring her in immediately. I was told to keep calling until an opening could be found. Eventually I was told to bring her in at end of the day. I told the receptionist that I was not going to allow my cat to suffer any longer and I was coming in immediately. When I got there, no other patients were present. Yet, Cappel made me wait for some time as she flounced around the reception area discussing the hospital phone system being repaired with the office staff. When she finally saw my cat, she acknowledged that she was dying. Cappel said that she was "surprised" by how this had turned out. When I went back to the hospital a few weeks later to pick up my cat's ashes, I was given a bill for the euthanasia. Clearly, my one interaction with Cappel was a nightmare. I still feel guilty that I allowed my friend to suffer longer than she needed to. In my opinion, Dr. Cappel is glib, uncaring and, worst of all, an incompetent veterinarian. I urge you not to bring your animal companions to Vet at the Barn. read more

My little bud, Jazzy, needed a checkup. We decided to switch vets, since the other one was insanely expensive. The vet was thorough and compassionate. She strongly suggested that our dog had to get his teeth cleaned and some extracted. We agreed and went back the next day. For all the work they performed, the bill was very reasonable. I really wanted to love this place as holistic vets are far and few between. We loved that Dr. Cappel was holistic, did not push vaccines and supported that we were raw feeders. What we didn't love is her constant tardiness and too lax approach. We visited 4 times, always early appointments as we are 25 miles away and try to avoid traffic. She is constantly late and we end up waiting for 40 minutes to an hour. What finally made me give up on this place is our recent experience with my dog Raven. We found a small lump on her throat, so had Dr. Cappel do a needle aspiration. We called 4 days after to find out the results and was told they'd call back with the results. Another 4 days go by, so I call again. Finally someone calls back and tells us it's "suspicious of thyroid carcinoma". I asked if Dr. Cappel can call us at her earliest convenience so we can decide what to do next. Nothing. So since we are raw feeders and holistic believers, I did my own research and began my own natural supplementation for immune building and detox. Well the mass started to grow, and we went to a surgeon/specialist. He asked to see the results of the needle aspiration, so I got a copy from Vet at the Barn. He explained everything to me, line by line, and showed me where they graded aka confirmed thyroid carcinoma. I wish Dr Cappel, or whoever called me with the results, were more informative as I'm sure I would've reacted differently, and maybe acted more urgently. Now here we are, with an inoperable, metastasized thyroid tumor. The search for a holistic vet continues. read more

Brought my dog in twice because she had a growth on her snout, and she had a terrible odor that was not at all like her. Dr. Beverly Cappel gave me some balm for the growth on her lip and told me to wash my dog's beard! I took my dog to Dr Fischer in Hillsdale NJ and he immediately scheduled surgery for the growth and a tooth cleaning (since she would be under general anesthesia anyway). While sedated during surgery Dr Fischer found a tumor on the roof of my dog's mouth-- this is what was causing the odor! He was able to remove it. Thank goodness I went to another vet., my dog's illness would have been ignored until it was too late. The office is very disorganized and the wait time is too long. I order my dog's prescriptions through an online pharmacy and it took more than three weeks for Dr. Beverly Cappel to approve the requests that the pharmacy had faxed over on the day that I had placed the order...repeat: she did not take two minutes out of her day to authorize a prescription for over three weeks! No sense of urgency, no attention to detail, careless diagnosing- I had been a client of theirs for years, but after Dr Shayne left I can not say that I have had one single positive experience here. I am lucky that we did not have a total disaster on our hands. I will not recommend them to anyone in the future. I have noticed that whenever there is a poor review rating, a 5 start review follows....I realize that this is their business, but their interests would be better served if they focused upon improving the caliber of their practice. From the front desk to the vet techs to the veterinarians, all are professional, kind, gentle and fabulous in their treatment of my pets. The office and treatment rooms are very clean. I was concerned when I read reviews. It took at while to get in to see holistic vet. I was nagging the receptionist to squeeze me in because my Rottweiler had discharge from both eyes. I usually go to Oradell animal hospital and get young vets that see my tiny and muzzle him right away and then that starts a horrible experience for me and my dog. But this vet at the barn was older and seasoned and relaxed and did not even get at all intimidated by tiny it wasn't even a thought and tiny 'a nub wagging was at ease so we talked for quite a while and she reinforced the importance of not disregarding anything even minute when it comes to the eye. Turns out he has an infection. She prescribed an ointment and a powder for food and within a day the discharge is almost gone. Rates were reasonable. Place was neat and clean. Easy to find. Receptionist was efficient. read more

Horrible place!! They were disappointed that I only ended up paying for a checkup or exam for my dog it was $65 they tried really hard for me to add on other unnecessary tests etc. When I finished and went to the cashier she said that's all, just a check up. They were disappointed I didn't spend more money, understand people it's all about the money EVERY veterinarian's office is the same they want your money, it's the only way they can survive by getting you to pay for tests and products and shots your pet does NOT need. I paid for nothing, I called in advance and asked a specific question they said they could help me once I got there they changed their mind and told me they can't help, then when I was ready to leave with my pet they tried to boost the bill by offering other services, a total waste of time and money!! read more

Dr Cappel is without a doubt the most gifted vet I have ever dealt with ( and I have been to many). My latest experience is with my 14 year old dog, SAMMY. He was diagnosed in June 2014 with kidney failure and given a life expectancy of 3 months by my regular vet( who I have dealt with for years and also have great respect for). Whenever I've been in a situation like this I reach out to Dr Cappel for a phone consult. She looked at the blood work and put SAMMY on holistic medicines and specific fluids due to high calcium levels. Throughout this year I have reached out to her for guidance in his care. She is a God sent who truly thinks out of the box. Sammy is still going strong with a great quality of life and it's because of the gift that Dr Cappel possesses. It starts with a totally awful front desk.I called and said I wanted a second opinion regarding my pet bird who was having some very strange happenings. The receptionist told me they needed to get the original vet's workup, x-rays, CBC results and so on. I said fine. When I got to my appointment the next day, the receptionist asked me, "Where are all the lab-work papers you were to bring in?" I said, "What do you mean I was to bring in? Don't you have a fax machine? Aren't these papers normally faxed between doctors?" She said, no, they expect the pet owner to bring in lab-work from other vets. Indeed, their own voice mail does not state, "If you are a veterinarian, press 1" or some such, because they do not share their work with other vets! So I called my current vet at Oradell Animal Hospital (sorry I ever doubted them!), got the records room and they said they would send everything over within 24 hours. It did me no good for my appointment with Dr. Cappel at Vet At The Barn. Dr. Cappel seemed knowledgeable and gave me time, which was interrupted over and over by her staff. But it turns out the diet she put my bird on was just wrong. It might have been right had she had the birds x-rays in front of her that showed an enlarged liver. But Dr. Cappel assured me she would call me when she received the x-rays and blood work and give me her opinion. Never happened. I called and called the hospital asking if the lab work was received, if Dr. Cappel had a chance to review it, ANYTHING! I never got a response. And they will never have my business again. read more
