I came here twice in one week to enjoy the variety of semlor they had (my favorites were the original and the one with almond paste mixed into the whip cream). Ok... Vete-Katten is a total tourist trap... but there are far less enjoyable places to be trapped than here. Yes, the decor is gilded, over-the-top, turn-of-the-century stuff. What we tried of the food and drink would be considered pretty good no matter what the setting. On our visits, the princess cake was enjoyable with layers of fluffy cake, generous layers of whipped cream, jam and a thin layer of sweeter-than-usual marzipan; the bread was excellent; the takeaway salads good; and the coffee was fair, better than the ubiquitous Espresso House, at least, and Vapiano or others of that ilk. If you're a coffee snob, you may turn your nose up at Vete-Katten's. If you are, like me, not above drinking instant coffee on busy school mornings -- this place is above serviceable. They also have bottled fresh squeezed juices (yep, I realize that's an oxymoron), kanelbullar, vanilla buns and a wide variety of French desserts similar in quality to products sold at a Maison Kaiser. Staff were mostly pretty nice, despite their sometimes trying customers. But they were not often affirmatively helpful to a muddled tourist standing around not knowing where to go or what to do. We liked the traditional Swedish baked goods at Gateau (i.e. the amazing butter-saturated "morning buns") and Fabrique just as well or more. I was quite keen to try princess cake the weekend I was in Sweden, so I came here for lunch with a friend on Easter Sunday around 12:45. Per the sign on the door, the location was open throughout the Easter holidays, albeit with slightly reduced hours. There was a queue when we arrived (there are separate queues for dining in and buying takeaway desserts), but it moved fairly quickly. We were at the café for about 2 hours and customers seemed to come in waves, so sometimes there would be queues while other times it didn't look busy at all. So I wouldn't be too discouraged if you stop by and see a queue; they tend to move through them quickly and you might have just come in with a wave of other customers. Most of the signage/menus were in Swedish but there was a small English menu near the cash register when you reached the front of the line and the staff were fluent in English. In addition, there were cold dishes (mostly sandwiches) behind the glass. My friend and I both got sandwiches--I think we got overwhelmed by the Swedish menus at first--but I would recommend ordering off the menu if you want things like soup, salad, or quiche. In addition, if you order off the menu they bring it to your table, which is nice. We each also got a slice of princess cake and I got a tea (the "recommended" one at the top of the menu; not sure of the English name) while my friend got a cappuccino. All the food was delicious and the sandwiches were quite filling. My friend later also went back to order a soup--there was only one, the soup of the day, which was tomato the day we were there. It looked delicious and could probably have been a meal on its own, as it was large and was served with bread. Ultimately the princess cake was not really my thing, but I'm so glad I got to try it. The café was pretty crowded and probably always is, so you might have to look around for a seat. It's pretty beautiful inside, with good lighting and a nice view of the street if you're near the front. The food was a bit expensive; my lunch was probably around $20 USD, and my friend's was more since she also ordered soup. However, it wasn't too bad given the fact that it's popular with tourists and has a well known reputation. One of the bathrooms was put of order at the time, so there was a bit of a queue at times. This is a lovely old cafe that reminds me of Konditori La Glace in Copenhagen, just a tad less fancy. This place has been around for so long, proudly making baking goods for the Swedes. We went here for fika to stuff ourselves with semla and coffee (tea for me), but the famous lactose-free semla was unfortunately sold out, so I had to swallow a lactose pill and enjoy the "normal" semla. The semla was good! I was usually wary about baked goods because they tend to be sweet, especially those with marzipan (or Swedish' mandelmassa), but this semla was good without being sweet. My wife, who grew up in Stockholm, has fond childhood memories going to Vete-Katten with her mother. It was one of the first places she took me in Stockholm the first time I came here. I am happy to report that it is one of the few places, if not the only place in Stockholm, that has kept to the traditional recipe for Princess Torta. Most other places have so compromised their versions that fraud is the only proper description, i.e., no raspberries, no raspberry marmalade, no pastry cream, not to mention old stale whipped cream, stale sponge layer, and a generally clumsy, careless, and unappetizing presentation and taste. In a recent visit, the Princess Torta at Vete-Katten was impeccable. It was absolutely fresh, assembled perfectly, each and every element in the right place and proportion. It had real, live, zinging flavour and a lovely mouth feel. And fresh raspberries! Yes, it was perfect. Was it a little pricey? So what? Add to that a great location, nice space with the more modern section toward the street and the old Kaffe Rum beyond. Two entrances, two places to order, connected to each other. OK guys, at first I was not aware that this place was biggggggg. I was walking along Kungsgatan and went to an older building and as I was sipping my tea and eating semla (delicious. delicious. the cheap semla from IKEA does not even compare), I thought this cafe just wanted to keep with the "old" theme. Since the cafe was always super busy, we just grabbed the first seat we found. It's a nautical themed room which has rather strange seating arrangement and lighting. Anyways, after I finished my tea, I walked around the cafe. OMG, there is an extension. It is actually a very big cafe. The other side of the cafe is all modern, shiny, and bright. Here's what I recommend, if you come in from Kungsgatan and you saw the blue Vete-Katten sign, walk down Kungsgatan a bit more. You will see the other entrance. It is bright and beautiful. Vete-Katten was in every single Stockholm travel book I got, so I knew I had to pop by during my trip. I got the princesa cake and a regular coffee. Overall, the experience was meh. The cake as fine - nothing extraordinary. It was unique in flavor, though, with an almond paste (dyed green...which was random) and a raspberry jam. The coffee was mediocre. I think I came at the wrong time (around 5:30pm on a Sunday), when perhaps all the other pastry options were gone. Beautifully decorated pastry cafe in Stockholm with a bit of Parisian flare and feel to the place. They have two line ups but no English signs which made it a bit confusing. After asking one of the staff there, we learned that you go left if you plan to dine in and you go right for take out. Majority of the pastries were pretty self explanatory without the need for a sign but there were a few rolls that most definitely needed signs. I thought it was about time to update my review of this joint! I finally have been here a few times (gone in and ordered from the "newer" side instead of the historic side this time). And, I love it here! The deserts were really delightful. I totally get all the hype now! The interior decor is pleasant and their coffee hits the spot! It's really one of the better fika locations in the city. I had a somewhat different experience the visiting the older side of the cafe (not knowing about the "newer" side's renovation). Where it was dark and a bit average, the renovated side is bright and lovely. It just goes to show you should be informed about where your going! And, always give a place a second chance!! The only issue I really have with the place is that it can get super duper crowded in here. I guess that's a good problem for them to have, just not for a customer like me. I would've been back to visit several more times by now, but out of fear for the crowds... i haven't even attempted it. There was one time a month ago when I couldn't even get in the door!! One of the cutest bakeries I've ever visited. I arrived around 7pm looking for a quick dinner and a small treat. I had this amazing lentil salad, was SO good I might go back during my short 3 day visit to Stockholm. Slices of princess cake were all sold out, so I picked this Raspberry Ivory dome and it was quite outstanding. It was quite empty at this time and had no trouble finding a table. First stop after a long flight from Boston! Googled best fika in my area and this was the first! What a great find. I'm excited to go back tomorrow before I leave Stockholm. I don't care that Vete-Katten is considered a tourist trap or that the decor is "over the top," I love that stuff, especially when it comes to dessert places. This place reminds me of an old school parlour and I am a complete sucker for those, I mean... they even wrapped my box of semla with an actual fabric ribbon! Really delicious pastries! I came here originally for the kanel, because the internet had said this is one of the best places for it. But then I read Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews and they all said to get the Semla and there were some good reviews for the pistachio pastry, so I got a Semla classic mini (I wish I had gotten the original size!), a pistachio pastry, and a kanelbulle. I didn't eat all of them at once - in fact, I came here before my 10-hr flight back home. In fact, half the pistachio pastry and the entire kanelbulle made it back home. Anyway, the semla was amazing! The cream was light and fluffy, and whatever flavoring right under the cream (cardamom?) was good too. The bread with it was light and fluffy too, really good! I really enjoyed that pastry. It wasn't too sweet either. The pistachio pastry was interesting, although I could do without the sugar on top. Good flavoring, and crunchy outside, chewy bread, really good! Unique bread that I haven't had or seen in many other places (or maybe I wasn't looking). The kanelbulle was full of flavor, and again, the bread was great. Highly recommend this place; everything's 2-3 SEK cheaper if you take it to go, but the ambiance looks nice there! The place is really big, and there are a lot of tables; the setting is sort of like a tea house and very quaint. Plus, the staff there are all really friendly and cheerful!
