My first foodie adventure in Stockholm was this bakery and I came back 3 more times! They have the best variety of baked goods, breakfast items, desserts and drinks coffee, tea and alcoholic ! The service is always so good and they are so polite. I loved the old time feel yet the capture a little modern into it too. They have a few different locations. All are great . I loved the first one I went to with the outdoor garden. I had my first Swedish cinnamon bun here and that is pretty much my go to here. I also loved the apple muffin . The coffee is nice and strong and served in their lovely cups and their bubbly is a good treat with pastries too surprisingly . They have counter service, to go, or you can do the sit down service too. Definitely seek these bakeries out if you're in the city. You won't be sorry! This was my first Fika and my last in Stockholm and a tradition I truly loved! The central train station has a kiosk of the bakery and I got some cinnamon buns to go home with me too.
Coming straight out of Arlanda airport, Vette-Katten was our first stop. For anyone that needs a coffee or pastry after a long flight, Vette-Katten is the perfect place. My friend and I were not the only ones who came straight from the airport (or going to the airport) as there were a few customers with luggage. There were more than enough tables to grab a seat and I went to order food for me and my friend. We ordered the princess cake, white chocolate mousse, the skagen toast, a latte and a capuccino. I don't know what all these other yelp reviewers are talking about, but the princess cake was made for royalty. I'm usually not a fan of fondant, but this fondant was different. The fondant isn't too sweet, has a pleasant tartness, and complements the fluffy cream and fresh raspberries. I was tempted, but properly dissuaded, from bringing a few slices back to New York. Aside from the perfect princess cake, the white chocolate mousse is super soft and balanced, the skagen toast was refreshing, and the coffee was pretty good. Overall, I think Vete-Katten shines when it comes to their pastries. The only difficult part of ordering in Vette-Katten is that I couldn't read anything and had to point to things/ask lots of questions. This wouldn't be so bad if there weren't a lot of people waiting behind us. If we did more research beforehand, I would've tried the cloudberry dessert instead of the white chocolate mousse (which is more of a universal dessert). Despite that, the workers are really friendly, helpful, and patient. I could see myself grabbing a coffee and a pastry alone or with friends if I lived in the area. There is a casual coziness despite a lot of people coming in and out. You won't be pressured to leave as there are just as many groups having relaxed conversations over tea and pastries. I'll continue to dream about Swedish pastries and Fika until the time comes to visit again.
As one of the first breakfast/meals that we had in Sweden, we stopped by here. We just had a cinnamon bun and the Princess cake. I enjoyed the cinnamon bun, which wasn't too sweet which I really appreciated. If America had this, I could see myself eating this over the American version just for the reduced amount of sugar. The princess cake was good, but the fondant wasn't the best. In general I think fondant isn't the best. If they left the fondant off I would have enjoyed it a lot more. A nice cream on top and it would've been perfect for me, but sadly it was fondant which meh. Overall, I enjoyed Vete-Katten and these type of cafes are not as rare in America, but by far the food I feel like is better and overall atmosphere. If we come back I think we could spend a little longer here and take our time while sipping coffee. I think though there are so many cafes, but I thought this place had a lot of seating and would be great for big groups.
Delicious place for Fika! Excellent and quick service. There is a wide variety of pastries, cakes, breads, buns, sandwiches, coffee drinks and smoothies. Everything is very fresh. For a late breakfast, I had a cappuccino and cardamom sweet bun which rich in flavor and taste. If you like cardamom, I would highly recommend it. Plenty of spacious seating indoor. Great place to meet friends for coffee and a treat. Highly recommend it.

Their grilled sandwiches with ham and cheese are ridiculously good, it's legit one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had, the Dijon mustard in it brings it to a whole another level. Princess cake and Smultron were my favorite sweets I tried, although you can't go wrong with any of them. Service was fantastic. As a non Swedish speaker, I was able to order and communicate with the staff. Ambiance was great, I was able to secure a seat for myself every time I visited. From the looks of it, seemed like a very popular spot for first dates among the locals! Overall a must visit for anyone in the city!
Vete-Katten is a requirement to visit if someone is in Sweden. Everything about this place is wonderful from the atmosphere to literally each and every dessert. I frequented here several times and I was in Sweden for less than a week, so that's saying something. Yes the princess cake is a classic and a must, but there's so much more out there, including solbulle, semla, and ostkaka. In short, whatever is seasonal was absolutely delicious.

While there was a bit of a line it went quickly and all the women working behind the counters were hard at work. I devoured my pastry and slowed down with a big latte to keep me going. There is something to be said about a place that executes a coffee break well, a solid menu of items, great service and a comfy ambiance -- and Vete-Karen delivered. Definitely recommend.
Quite a few goodies in this small space with a few seats. Mostly it's a to-go place since it's literally on the way to/from the T-Centralen station. Bread, cookies, small various refrigerated sweets, sandwiches, wraps, and more. Coffee, tea, soda. They do cakes, too. I was there in the early evening and they were wiped out of many products. read more

We came here solely for the Princess cake which is a traditional Swedish cake meant for special occasions and birthdays. A princess cake is a traditional Swedish layer cake consisting of alternating layers of airy sponge cake, pastry cream, and a thick-domed layer of whipped cream. This is topped by marzipan, giving the cake a smooth rounded top. The marzipan was extra sweet and made it difficult to finish the cake. I really liked the airy sponge cake and the berries. The green marzipan makes the cake look unique and adds an almond scent. Split the cake with a friend for dessert and it was just the right amount. read more
Someone told me the Budapest cake here was actually better than the storied Princess cake. I didn't want to miss out, so I got both on my first visit. They are both really good, but the classic Budapest cake was my favorite. On my second visit, I got the strawberry Budapest cake and a blueberry pastry. Both were good, but still not as good as that classic Budapest cake. My second visit was around 5pm on a Wednesday afternoon in June after it had rained a few hours earlier. There were only 3 people in front of us in a fast moving line. Seats were easy to find. Totally different than my first visit on a sunny day in September when everyone was outside. read more
Try the Princess cake! It was so light and fluffy that we ate it two days in a row. Be careful though, even though the cake practically melts in your mouth, it's still really rich and filling. We also tried their cardamom bun as well as cinnamon bun- all the pastries are extremely delicious and fresh. Service is also very fast and efficient. read more
This is a well renowned cafe and pastry spot in central Stockholm. Near to the central train station it offers a wide array of cakes, pastries, sandwiches and coffee drinks. The entire time we were there, the place was packed and finding a table took a bit of jockeying. There is no table service. All of the food we got was excellent and tasty. Would definitely come back. read more
Quick! Need to finish my Yelping before I board the plane! I liked this place because it reminded me of Laduree in Paris. It's a historical cafe -- I think it's founded in 1928? Anyways, I was drawn in by the wide array of pastries... so epically beautiful. Especially the princesa cake. I ordered a semla, sat down and enjoyed my bun with a coffee. The semla is so light and delicate. The bun was like a pillowy cloud stuffed with very light cream - not too sweet thank God. It's a tad pricier than other places I believe but well worth the quality. The inside is very much like a French cafe. There are benches along the wall, some small circular tables where tourists gather. Very well-lit set-up and the space is enormous. Perfect last stop before I boarded to bus to Arlanda airport. read more

Came here to try the famous prinsesstårta (Swedish Princess Cake)! Most of my friends have seen this cake on the Great British Bake-off but, for those who don't know what it is (like me), it's DELICIOUS and consists of alternating layers of sponge cake, raspberry jam, whipped cream, and a thick pastry cream and topped with a layer of green marzipan. It's a must-try in Sweden! The cake is light and soft, and isn't too sweet. Cream to sponge cake is like 3:1 ratio, but because it's not heavy or too sweet I didn't mind. The green marzipan at Vete-Katten (VK) is a thing of beauty though. I don't usually like marzipan but VK's is so soft and delicate. Like 99% of Swedish places, employees speak perfect English and they accept Mastercard/American CC's in general. read more

We found Vete-Katten by chance when visiting Stockholm and ended up coming here twice (and craving more as soon as we flew home). Vete-Katten is a cute, authentic European cafe to grab your FIKA! We came here for breakfast and after dinner for a dessert..and they have so many wonderful pastries and treats. Prices were reasonable also. You'll see many pastry shops in the area but Vete-Katten tasted fresh and were delicious! Would definitely recommend the Weiner Semla which was flaky, creamy pastry and perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. Plenty of places to relax and sit also in their cafe and feel like a local! read more
Beautiful bakery with the feel of Bottega Louie in DTLA. Stop by for some afternoon tea and Swedish pastries in the beautiful bakery filled with locals and tourists. I'm not an expert in Swedish pastries, but we got a meringue tart and a slice of the princess cake. I was very excited to get the princess cake as I've seen this as part of the Great British Baking Show on one of the more recent episodes. While I have not been a huge fan of marzipan, this cake was so delightful. Fresh jam in the middle with the extremely moist cake. And the marzipan top was the finishing touch. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Some places sell food. Others are experiences. Vete-Katten is a bit of both. It's a culinary time capsule, an ode to a more genteel lifestyle, relaxed, that savors the blend of environment and eats, to make small table conversations over coffee and a bite to eat convivial, or intimate, or just a dash of dish about this person or that, on the day. What a wonderful morning we had there. Bright summer day. It's a place that more locals seem to frequent, and we could see why. Our pastries and coffee were first-rate. I had a cardamom bun that makes me sad that more people don't use this wonderful spice in their baking as a lead, not a role player, in the taste. We also sampled a fresh blueberry bun with wild blueberries that invoked old school summers, finding a pale, washing them, and then adding blueberries to everything. Their winter seating indoors is also quaint and traditional and intimate, but I can see why the garden in the back is so magic. Counter service, then sit. The salads, sandwiches and other treats looked great too. read more

Owned by Chef Johan Sandelin since 2012 and founded by Ester Nordhammar in 1928 it can safely be said that Vete-Katten is something of a Stockholm institution, and conveniently located just a few blocks from Central Station it proved a convenient stop en route from Arlanda Airport to a hotel in Kristineberg, nearly twenty hours of travel finally coming to a conclusion in a comfortable chair with eight selections ranging from Cakes to Tarts and Rolls. Officially located at Kungsgatan 55 since its inception and later opening a smaller kiosk at T-Central, the bilingual staff ready and happy to explain items listed in Swedish to a mixed crowd of tourists and locals, it was after surveying several cases that tough decisions were made to omit several delectable looking Pastries in favor of others, items boxed or placed on trays with self-service Water available in addition to Coffee, Tea and other Beverages. Famous for classic confections crafted by an all-female staff until the 1960s, the service still entirely young ladies from what could be seen across the space's expanse, it was shortly after seating that first bites were taken of an Almond and Brown Sugar Tosca that eats much like Canadian Buttercake at the bottom, a similar consistency forming the base of a thick round labeled Katalan which replaces Brown Sugar and sliced Nuts with Raspberry Jam atop the Almond Flour. At this point unfamiliar with many of Sweden's culinary traditions but quick to learn across eighteen bakeries visited over the next nine days, both Vete-Katten's Cardamom Bun and Solbulle a bit drier and less fluffy than those found elsewhere, it was in two seasonal specials that the shop managed to impress the most, a Blueberry-riddled Brioche called Sommarbulle benefitting the Dough with Fruit Juice while a Summertime Budapest Cake replaced traditional Chocolate and Orange with Almond Cream and Strawberries amidst the Meringue. Finding the Nut Roll also better than Chef Sandelin's Kardemumma Bulle, the added Sweetness of Brown Sugar and textural juxtaposition of Nuts making the base seem not so dry, it was finally in Vete-Katten's famous Princess Cake that the tasting reached its end, the Sponge Cake a bit more dense than others and the Pastry Cream not too Sweet which seemed an odd choice in the setting of sour Raspberry Jam that was not featured as part of the Cake offered elsewhere. read more
We were wandering Stockholm's downtown busy shopping district in search of a decent coffee spot. Ellen F. and I love the cafes in Europe as they are definitely unique and different from ours in the states, and when we get a chance we make it a mission to visit one. In comes Vete-Katten, it's located not far from Stockholm's main train station in Norrmalm. Very busy area loaded with many shops, I recommend you take the metro as it is reasonable and convenient. Definitly would have a hard time finding parking, if your a group of 4 or more then Über is worth the money. This place has been around since 1928, in my opinion very classy and old school on the inside. Huge seating area, should find a spot but at night after hours it does get crowded. The coffee was absolutely amazing along with thier desserts. The cheesecake was awesome, please order it. If you need water or more milk there is a station where you can help yourself. If your alone or with a companion and have time kill I highly recommend you stop by, everyone speaks great English as most Scandinavians do, and the prices are reasonable for what your getting. read more

Vete-Katten offers one of the coolest fika experiences in Stockholm, the highlight of course being the extensive tea rooms within this specific location. It seems like everyone in Stockholm knows of this place. So if you go at peak fika hour, you'll find yourself hovering over tables for a while. I've only tried two of the menu items at Vete-Katten despite having been there multiple times, and it's because Vete-Katten is my go-to semla spot in all of Stockholm. Every time I go, I try and tell myself that I'll branch out and try something new, but I end up keep going back to the semlor. The bun is so soft, almost brioche-y, the cream is light and indulgent, and the almond paste, in adequate quantity, is neither overpowering nor too sweet. The cardamom in the bun is my favorite part; it's not overpowering and almost cancels out the heaviness of the almond paste. Most of the time, when you finish eating a semla, you won't be able to stomach food for a long time afterwards because it tends to be too heavy. This isn't the case for Vete-Katten's semlor. The prinsesstårta is also great; the cake is fluffy, and the cream is reminiscent of the one in the semlor. It could be a bit sweeter, considering the jam and the cream dull out the existing sweetness. I've only gotten it once, because the semla is always what I am there for, and what you should be there for too. read more
This is the best hidden-gem we have found in quite a while! I emphasize the hidden part because we never found the main and theoretically most obvious entrance, and we were searching. Our host in Sigtuna mentioned that if we were taking the train to the Stockholm City stop, that the exit to the train was pretty close to one of Vete-Katten's entrances. That's not the one we found. Stumbling around a side-street while waiting for Google and City Mapper to agree on something, we saw a modest little sign for the shop, entered an enclosed alleyway through a nondescript door, and entered another nondescript door some way farther along the alley. Met with a tiny bakery counter, we ordered some pastries and a coffee, and were directed through a door to either side and advised we would find coffee nearer a table. Somewhat skeptically, we went through one of these small doorways and around a very cosy and private tearoom, and only then found ourselves in a broad, open-plan room with small tables, chairs, and couches dotted about the sides while a large circular table held coffee services and a ring of cups and saucers at the ready. I prepared my coffee, and we ducked around yet another corner to find a perfect table for two in a cosy nook where we took our time devouring our amazing pastries. Vete-Katten is what every hip, young coffee house wishes it could be when it grows up. My breakfast there will be one of my fondest memories of Stockholm, and should I ever make it back to the lovely city my first order of business will be to try and find it again! read more

Hats off for serving us phenomenal food and drinks, and providing top notch service. All dishes were cooked to perfection and the ingredients used in the sandwich were fresh. We really enjoyed our night at the Black horse. The food, ambience and setting were all to such a high standard and we cannot wait to return! read more
