As the oldest café in Stockholm, this was definitely on the list to come to and we had the same idea as a lot of others. This place gets busy but with the great food and drinks you can get here, I can see why. There are two lines, ones to order and eat there and the other is to take away. My friend and I ordered two coffees and two cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls are so good yet so different from what we have in the US. The rolls are flavorful but not filled with a ton of sugar and cinnamon and then are topped with sugar crystals. Usually in the US it is doused with a gloop of sugar, but honestly I like the sugar crystals so much more. Oh my gosh. I was told that since I was in Sweden, I need to eat princess cake. After researching a few, I landed upon this place. I got the soup, baked potato, and princess cake. The soup was delicious. The baked potato was good too. The princess cake? Oh my... I always thought that marzipan was something not-so-yummy that you just put to the side. The marzipan on the princess cake was something completely different. It actually had great flavor and texture. After leaving this place I noticed that there was a whole shop next door! I don't know what the different between the two places are since they both said Vete-Katten, but the one at the corner looked super pretty while the place I went to was the back shop that looked like a regular mom-pop cafe. Stopped in for lunch around 11:30 on a Tuesday; not too busy to start off with. The cafe is beautiful and old-fashioned, which is what drew me in. At the counter I ordered (in English - no problem) the falafel salad and a slice of princess cake. The cashier pointed me towards the bread, tea, coffee, and water included with my lunch - something I didn't expect but was very excited about. There was white bread and a darker bread available; I thought the dark, wheaty bread was delicious. The salad was delivered to my table promptly and was fantastic. I'm not usually one to eat beets, but they were fantastic in this salad along with the golden cauliflower, pickled onions, and falafel balls. Now for the star of the show: the princess cake. After reading the reviews for this bakery I knew this was the pastry to get (although I probably would have tried everything). I was not disappointed. The jam at the bottom is a bit tart, but the cake and cream are pleasant and not too sweet. My favorite part was the marzipan...a little chewy, sweet, and really takes the cake from simple to something special. When I left around 12:15 the cafe was filling up. Swedish fika is a daily pastry-and-coffee break ritual that sounded absolutely entrancing to this American visitor. Even though I don't have the strongest sweet tooth in the world, I made it my mission to stake out pastries and coffee for breakfast one day during our visit, figuring the homeland of fika must do something right in the bakery department. Enter Vete-Katten, a cute bakery that reminded me of someone's home in the sense that it has sprawling rooms filled with furniture that would not be out of place in your grandmother's parlor. We waited in the long but fast-moving line to pick out three pastries to share: A pistachio Danish, a bun filled with vanilla custard, and a cardamom roll. We also had two cappucinos. The pastries were delicious and unusual (for our palates). They weren't as heavily sweetened as what I'm used to in the US, which is a good thing (see: weak sweet tooth). The pistachio and the vanilla cream pastries were both fairly delicate in flavor. The cardamom pastry had a strong taste, so I found myself reserving it for the finale of the meal--otherwise, it overwhelmed the other options. The coffee was disappointing for a cafe of this type; not terrible, but not good either. Despite the size of the cafe, it was tough to score a seat in Vete-Katten. People seemed to put their belongings on tables before getting in line, which reduces the number of available seats at any moment. That said, there are lots of cozy nooks to sit in if you're able to snag one. Recommended, especially for the pistachio and vanilla cream pastries. read more

So i heard this place has the original recipe for princess cake. It was great but i am not huge fan of marzipan so i didnt enjoy it that much. The raspberry layer in the bottom was great though! Very sour :) The budapest cake was the bomb! I love it so much... So much almond. Nice texture, not too richy or creamy:) The semla here was good but I personally prefer Tosse's. I felt like the bun here was a bit too spiced/seasoned and wasnt well baked. Too dry but the almond cream was sooo gooooood. :) The place is always packed although it is pretty big with secret backroom in the back. I came here for dessert. I like that they have long hours (open until 7pm) since everything in Stockholm closes at 4pm or 5pm. I'm from NYC so I'm used to everything open until 10pm or 11pm even bakeries and dessert places. I ordered the pistachio and butter buns. The buns were delicious and you can tell they're freshly baked since it's moist, not dry. I liked the pistachio bun the most since the cream inside was delicious. Atmosphere is very elegant and there are a lot of pastry options. Prices are fair considering it's Scandinavia. Staff were really friendly too! This cafe is perfect for afternoon tea time. This was my first Semla and it was unique. The bun was very soft and lightly sweetened. The cream was a bit heavy but the almond paste was delicious! Really nice bakery with a great selection of goods and great service. A friend and I stopped by on a weekday morning and picked up a variety of baked goods. Being not from the area, we asked for suggestions and were given a lot of helpful ideas, and all of the baked goods were delicious, particularly a almond marzipan pastry that I think was called the mazariner. We also were able to procure three slices of princess cake, a sponge cake with raspberries, and it was delicious. Not too sweet and a nice hard layer on the outside. Vete-Katten translated to English means wheat cat. There's lots of wheat in their baked goods and that's the cat's meow. This is sweet spot for more than one reason. If you visit, you'll appreciate your visit and this cafe a lot more if you learn the history behind the bakery. It's really something special. For your convenience, here is the history: "Vete-Katten was founded in 1928 by a particularly forthright lady, Ester Nordhammar. In those days - women had only had the vote for a couple of years - very few companies were run by women, and even fewer patisseries. Ester, who was 42, had considerable professional experience, including working as a clerk, but had barely even set foot in a bakery. She had the idea to start a simple patisserie, "decorated like a vicarage", as someone said, offering pastries, bread and buns of the highest quality. It is said that the name was spawned when Ester was asked what her bakery would be called and answered: "Ja, det vete katten", which in Swedish can mean both "the cat knows" and "the wheat cat". Somebody must have liked the spontaneity of this and the play on words, so the name stuck. Another idea she had was to exclusively employ young women in the business (and she held by this, as not a single man was employed at Vete-Katten until 1961, the year Ester died). She teamed up with a partner, Anna Skog, who initially looked after production. After a few years Anna left and Ester continued to run Vete-Katten by herself. And she did this, with a firm hand, until 1961 when she bequeathed the patisserie to four of her employees. Two of them remained until 1979 when Vete-Katten was sold to Agneta and Östen Brolin. They in turn sold the venerable institution in 2012 to master pastry chef Johan Sandelin, who has worked in the company since 1997 and ensures the spirit of Vete-Katten lives on." Ah yes Vete-Katten. Upon entering you feel as if you traveled back to a simpler time, like something out of a history book or classic film. They've kept the old school '20s vibe with an elegant counter and coffee room. I quickly spotted what I had come for. A mini-raspberry cheesecake. After ordering the cheesecake and a cup of coffee I quickly sat down managing to spill some coffee as seen in the image above. Now this cheesecake was placed upon a graham cracker base layer, a new york style main layer, a raspberry jam topping with a raspberry and a piece of white chocolate sitting on top. This cheesecakes' filing was a plain filing, extremely firm and rich. But a place that breathes of that genuine old style where things were just more easy going and with less stress and disturbances, those are rare and should be cared for. Walking into Vete-Katten is like walking into a piece of history and that is what brings this place to life. We were a group of four that came in the morning for breakfast after a very early flight into Stockholm. I thoroughly enjoyed fresh coffee, fruit cocktail, ham and cheese sandwich with crispy and fluffy bread together with a yoghurt and granola. I just loved the whole experience. Also, the staff is super friendly, helpful and attentive, and they go to great lengths to show their appreciation for you as a paying customer. Located where Drottninggatan (the main shopping street) meets Kungsgatan (the street coming from Stureplan) Vetekatten is a very central place to have coffee. Don't expect the most amazing coffee from this place, most Swedish people will order normal coffee, which is filter coffee you pour yourself and can top up as many times as you want. The other coffees, like latte (interesting thing, this used to be referred to as cafe au lait everywhere until a few years ago in Stockholm) or cappuccino are okay but nothing special, there are plenty of other places in Stockholm for really good coffee. The allure of the place is (apart from being very central) is its heritage - founded 1928 - and of course its large selection of cakes and pastries. To go with your coffee you can go with something as simple as a cinnamon bun to a three layer chocolate mousse or more elaborate creations with edible gold. If you are in the area and tired after a long day of shopping Vetekatten is not a bad place to have coffee and rest your feet but if you're looking for really good coffee you should look elsewhere. read more

I stummbled on to this bakery/cafe on the way to a flea market in Stockholm. It seemed to be in a residential area between the train station and the shopping area. It felt like a Parisian cafe with rows of bistro tables. The subway tiled walls made the place look bright. They had a to go area that had the entire menu plus truffles and cakes. The clientele ranged from the United Nations of tourists to locals. The tourist hung out and the locals got take away. My stomach was off so I got a standard European ham and cheese breakfast sandwich and water. Mom got the best coffee she'd had in days with a flakey croissant.
