I have taken both of my dogs to Dr Barta he opened his doors here is Shelby Township -- it is sad to say the staff and manager are not professional there was a miscommunication with an appointment and the bottom line is if I didnt pay the 50.00 Patty the manager said go find another vet!!!!! What happened to professionalism and the customer may be right -- the lack of accountability of staff and being unprofessional to customers is astounding --- Do not go here the Dr is great but the staff is not who you want taking care of your pets. I have never been to this vet-but my daughter has! I heard Dr. Barta is very good, kind respectful etc. But I've never heard of someone calling to get in quick with a sick dog, she was given an appointment with a vet who works there who is NOT loving or caring. My daughter refused the appointment because of her last experience with this person. The receptionist told her ok you can come in the tomorrow but it will cost you $50/because you cancelled the appointment! This is outrageous!! Never in my life have I heard of this terrible policy! Dr. Barta and the entire Veterinary General staff are always beyond exceptional! Most times I call Gail answers and she always ensures I have all my questions answered. We moved to Omaha Nebraska about 2 years ago and every time we're home for the holidays, we make our appointment to visit Dr. Barta to ensure Poppy gets her canine influenza shot and her flea tick and heart worm medicine. It is so comforting as a pet parent to have a vet who has been with your animal since the day you adopt them and that is constantly in contact with any local ER vets and keeps up to date records with the vet from Omaha. I always feel that whichever doctor that sees my dog for health issues always listens carefully to my story and descriptions of why I needed to contact them. Holds true for my calling in and the people that answer the phone. They listen, ask me to clarify anything they think is necessary and make an appointment for me. Dr. Notebaert refused same day euthanasia yesterday despite us being directed two days prior at an appointment with Dr. Barta that if we called any day at 8:01 they would schedule it same day. My dog was a patient at Veterinary General for 10 years. He was suffering with cancer and in our time of need Veterinary General turned their backs on us. Instead, we had to take him to an animal emergency center. An unfamiliar place and medical staff to our dog and us. Veterinary General office staffer told us had Dr. Barta been working that day he would have done it. Barta never told us on Thursday any day at 8:01 except Saturdays. It's his practice. Lack of communication, inconsistencies between practitioners. We were assured they would accommodate him as a 10 year patient. Our dog was comfortable with the medical staff and office, as we were. Instead, we ended his life in unfamiliar territory. Dog was scared, didn't know where he was or who was with him. Like us. Don't risk this happening to you. Go elsewhere before you and your dog are turned away in your greatest time of need. read more

We used curbside service and from the time I booked the appt to the time my pup came out from his appt, We couldn't be happier with the staff and Dr. Barta. Everyone was very kind and understanding. The vet tech that took our pup back understood our concerns and apprehension since our pup had a bad experience at another vet in our area and normally won't go with anyone unless I am around. Dr. Barta called and examined our pup while I was on the phone and then put together an agreeable plan. Our pup had a shot and still came out of his appointment wagging his tail and as happy as he was when we first arrived. I'm going to be as fair as possible with this review. My cat has been a patient of Dr. Barta for about 10 years. I really think he's a fantastic caring vet. I'm sad that I now have to find a new place to go after 10 years due to the staff. My cat has been on the same prescription food for about 7 years. There has never been a problem ordering more until I attempted to use chewy.com. They denied the prescription because I now need an exam. I understand that it's the policy, but why all of a sudden is it an issue after all these years? Is it because I wasn't going to purchase through them? I told Amy that I simply cannot afford an exam right now(it's right after Christmas and I just had a baby) her reply is sorry that's our policy. So now my cat cannot have the food she's been on for YEARS because I can't afford an exam? Seems as though money is the bottom line with this place. read more

This the the BEST Vet . Dr. Barta is absolutely wonderful! He loves all animals. The hours are unbelievable 7 days a week and they will always get you in. The clinic is immaculately clean! Our dog had an ear infection and they were booked for July 4th weekend. However Dr Barta called and got her in first thing in the morning on Friday They go above and beyond for their patients. They have great hours and work with you for last-minute or emergency appointments. One thing I'm not crazy about: the hard sell on tests and procedures. My impression is this is a component of their business model, and in some aspects this makes sense as it is a business and trying to generate a profit. However, playing on concerned owners' fears is a bit of dirty pool, especially when they consistently present the 'worst case' scenario. Be an informed consumer and aware of your animal's overall health, history and breed-specific tendencies and you'll find them to be a capable vet center. read more

I am new to Macomb county. I recently purchased 2 new shih tzu puppies. I was to the clinic twice for shots. I spent close to $600. A few days ago the runt who weighs 5 lbs became ill. She couldn't keep anything down for 24 hours. I called the vet at 11 am and explained everything. They couldn't get my dog in until the next day. She could have been dead by then! They recommended I go to an "emergency vet". If I can't get my dog in during business hours what is the point of having a regular vet? I took her to the vet in Grosse Pointe Woods I used for 15 years previously within 2 hours! I will just drive now for my dogs. read more

Dr. Barta is a very caring compassionate Dr that does care a lot about pets. Had an orientation with him about my morkie puppy and he suggested to have an ultra sound done (which we did) and found our puppy had renal dysplasia in both kidneys. If it wasn't for that orientation with him I don't think I would've taken our puppy for an ultrasound. Thank you Dr. Barta it is nice to know there are good vets still out there. read more

The hours are convenient and I do feel that Dr. Barta is truly a good doctor. However, I recently brought my cat in for a procedure, and when I called prior to the appointment, I asked which tests and vaccines were needed beforehand. I was told only the rabies and distemper shots. When I arrived at the appointment, they then told me I needed a feline leukemia test done before they could do the procedure. Luckily, we had already had this done at another place, and were able to get the results faxed over, but I would have liked to have known this before, when I asked this specifically. Then, they told me that my cat may need to have a fecal test, despite having been dewormed three times in the last three months. At first, this was presented to me as if it were a necessary requirement for them to do the surgery. After asking several times for clarification, it was finally revealed that this is just something that they recommend getting done for "general welfare". I am not happy at their attempt to mislead me into paying for this test. This place is more expensive than others, and I took my cat here because I believe Dr. Barta is a good vet, but I won't be going back due to their dishonesty during my experience here. I cannot trust their opinion on what procedures and tests my pet needs because I fear that they are simply looking for my money. read more

they are very thorough and caring at this vet. i was reading the review about a nail trimming for a cat being 150$, for my kitty it's 12$ or something, probably because she doesn't require sedation. People might read that review and think in order to have their cats nails trimmed they sedate them. I think as long as your cat is relatively calm your cat won't need to be sedated and it wont be 150$. they always give every option that there is for your pet's health, and you might not decide to take all the options but at least you were educated about everything you can do to take care of your pet. And sometimes it's better to be safe then sorry. read more

No animal or person should ever be treated the way my puppy and I were treated today. Being long time customers (over 5 years atleast) with our other dog, we didn't have a problem but today we saw truly evil people working here. After changing my appointment in order to have my dogs ears looked at (which is what they said to do when I called over a week ago), they decided that since they were busy it wasn't their problem. I had never seen this vet tech before that came out to get our puppy but she was looking for an argument... We arrived early and called to tell them we were there, which was no problem. They were not able to take him until our appointment time which was not a problem at all as we arrived early because we appreciated them agreeing to have the doctor look at his ears! The problem started when this tech came out to grab Enzo and had not read any notes on our appointment. She said just hold the dog up and we can check his incision here then you can leave (he was neutered 2 weeks ago). I said oh they said that they would have the doctor look at his ears since he has been in a lot of pain. This tech said "nope that is not true and can not happen, it is not on your file so you can not have that happen." After going back and forth she took Enzo in and walked out to tell us IT WAS STATED on our appointment but they are far to busy and that she doesn't know who I spoke to about this but I was wrong for thinking I could have his ears looked at. Yes she said that when I called and spoke to a tech, I was in the wrong for listening to the tech. This new tech had Gal come out to the car who I had spoke to the day before when calling to confirm the appointment. Gal said the day before that she appreciated us calling to confirm it and that everything would be completely fine. Gal came outside and changed the story. We never would've moved our appointment if the ears could not be looked at so her story was completely shut down. As soon as I crushed her lie she threw her hands up and said we will bring your dog out and you can leave. I said please bring both of our dog's files and they said of course. The other tech from before brings out Enzo (with his cone still on) and she THREW him into the car through the window. He still had his cone on (which he shouldn't have) and hit his head on the center counsel which lead to him losing his balance and falling down to the floor sideways. On video of course since I just had a feeling something was going to happen but I imagined it would be words said rather than my 6 month old puppy being thrown through the window. She then dropped Enzo's file on my lap and walked away. I asked if it was for both dogs and she said yup both dogs. It was only Enzo's file so yes that is another lie. Another customer standing right there with her dog watching the whole thing was completely beside herself with the actions of the vet techs as well. Our poor puppy is now limping so he will be going to a veterinary hospital today and if they recommend legal action then that will really be a shame. The male doctor there (I feel horrible I can not remember his name) is absolutely amazing with animals and it is really a shame these vet techs were so horrible in front of a large amount of customers in their cars watching. Sadly this place has gone down hill as 2 weeks ago they gave us the completely wrong medication and when I called they said he will be fine changing medications and that they must not have been paying attention. The medication only covered flea and tick which means we were not given his heart guard. He was taking Revolution before which covers both but they gave us Frontline which only covers flea and tick. We were supposed to purchase heart guard today but Daly we weren't even given that option. Truly a horrible feeling to watch someone throw your puppy through your window, especially someone who works with animals so closely and we are supposed to trust. We will be going to Wilson's Veterinary and Hospital for now on who has an amazing staff that we learned about when our older dog was having trouble breathing and the techs at this vet said they wouldn't help. Our dog had kennel cough which is something they could've treated as our dog could barely breath. Your pet deserves better than these techs so please find a new vet if this is someone you are considering and learn from our mistake of trusting them with both of our dogs. read more

Dr. Barta is wonderful! I had a 13 year old lab that was acting confused and would pace back and forth and become upset for no apparent reason. My previous vet couldn't find anything wrong. Dr. Barta decided to check Peanut's blood pressure (something my previous vet never did) and found that it was extremely high. He started him on blood pressure pills right away and his symptoms improved in less than a week. Peanut also had K-9 Lupus, which is not that common. Dr. Barta treated him for a year and I am certain he extended his life. My lab lived to be 16, and I know he made it that long because of this great vet. I loved how gentle he was and he always took the time to explain things thoroughly. Once when my dog developed an ulcer due to his Lupus meds, Dr. Barta offered to drop off new meds at my house. He is a rare find! Sadly, we had to move to another state, so we only got to see him for a year. I will always be greatful to him for giving me more time with Peanut.
