Sadly, my experience at VSS was filled with tears and heartbreak but the staff and their vets are…read morethe best, most compassionate people I have ever dealt with. Our 12-year-old corgi, Miss Marley, all of a sudden started nonstop vomiting and would not eat. We took her to her normal vet, they ran some blood tests, x-rays, and got some fluids in her but she did not improve. That was when we were recommended to come here. She stayed the night, got more fluids and other meds and they did more imaging. They couldn't quite figure out what was truly wrong with her without aspirating her liver but we said no since the vet was worried about her not clotting. He suspected she had lymphoma but could not confirm. We proceeded with the best course of action he recommended but sadly, she did not improve. She stayed at VSS for 2 nights and 3 days and we visited her every day. Sadly, on the last day she did not seem herself and still would not eat and we had to make the difficult decision to let her go. It was so heartbreaking but the staff allowed us as much time as we wanted to say goodbye and to be with her one last time. They took care of everything while we were in the privacy of one of the rooms so we only had to leave the building after. I am very grateful to the 2 vets (Doctors Sutton and Sherman) and the many wonderful staff who took great care of our girl and were so respectful to us during her end of life stage. It was so sudden and I still struggle while I write this review. If you need a specialist for your fur babies, one with caring professionals, this place is one of the best.

I called to make an appointment, left a voicemail and filled out an online account. No response. I told my vet I hadn't gotten a response, so they called and said it was an emergency referral. We were then put on a waitlist. A few weeks later, they had an opening, which we eagerly booked. We went, and they concurred with my vet's insight to run more tests, but stated they didn't have time that day to do the tests and told us to come back a few days later. They emphasized that we needed to come in early in the morning so they would have time to actually run tests on her. We booked the first appointment opening they had for us and came on time. My dog's mass ruptured the very next day, a few days before her second appointment with VSS, weeks after we received the emergency referral from her primary care vet. She passed away before we could even get the tests done. This was an emergency referral and we were pushed around and dismissed. This was not treated like an emergency by VSS. We left a voicemail telling VSS what happened so we wouldn't be charged for missing an appointment (sent to voicemail again) and they didn't even have the decency to call us back. I am obviously heartbroken about the loss of my girl, but to see the lack of care, urgency, and empathy by this facility was so disheartening. She died back in March, and I was hesitant to say anything, but I think others should know our experience here. I will never trust my animals here in the future

20+ Years as a client, Can't say enough how Great they are! Happened to see the crazy review from…read moreAnn C. and can't say how wrong she is. First, Dr. Steinberg is the vets name and he was trained in Germany. I moved to West County from Ohio over 20 years ago, and was referred to Dr. Steinberg from another Bearded Collie owner. He is a wonderful vet and a nice person. His staff has always been very courteous and professional, and have treated my dogs with absolute kindness. Dr. Bender is equally competent and thorough, and it truly says a lot when I tell you I feel just as comfortable with either Doctor. Bearded Collies are not a common breed and have some particular sensitivities to some medicines. Dr. Steinberg has always been aware of these potential problems without my mentioning it, which just adds to my comfort level. I know a lot about Doctors- my father is a prominent Pediatrician in Ohio, with a 6 doctor practice, and I worked over 10 years in that office during summer breaks. I find many similarities in the qualities between vets and pediatricians- neither of them have patients that can communicate their problems! My father is a very straight-forward and common sense kind of doc, and I know if he were a vet he would be very similar to Dr. Steinberg! I used to be surprised at getting a follow up call to see how my sick dog was doing, but this is standard operating procedure for West County Animal Clinic. This always gives me an opportunity to ask any small questions that may have come up during the recovery process. Some vets are more interested in making money, than they are in helping their patients, and I have never felt either of the vets here were padding the bottom line. The focus has ALWAYS been on what is the highest quality of care that can be provided to help my dog. One of the best examples was with my first Beardie, who at 8 yrs old developed an abcess in his prostate. Dr. Steinberg suggested I take my dog to Mizzou's Animal Hospital in Columbia, MO. I asked if he couldn't do the surgery in his office, to which he responded he felt it was in the dogs best interest to bring him to Mizzou. I did take my dog, Howie, to Mizzou and they really saved him. He died twice in the ICU and had to receive blood transfusions, clotting factor, and be revived twice. When it was all done, the Mizzou vet told me I was VERY lucky- most vets try to do this surgery themselves and then the dogs end up in Mizzou anyway, and by that time they are too weak to survive the ordeal. I personally credit Howie's living another 5-1/2 years to Dr. Steinberg's expert advice. If you want the best straight-forward medical care for your pets, this is the place to go!

After a few weeks we went in for a wellness check & for them to take his stitches out. Again... we thought everything was good. They charge for unnecessary things on the bill which was whatever. We just wanted to make sure our dog was taken care of no matter the cost but they seem to use that against you. We noticed there was a stitch left in so we quickly take him back up there in hopes they would get them all out this time.. Flash forward a few weeks of him "no longer having stitches" and we see there's a few still in there... we're a bit upset that they missed them especially since it's practically healed now & we took him up a 2nd time to get them out. So we call and say they missed a few & she quickly cuts us off and say "this happens sometimes" ... I'm sorry this what? It shouldn't happen at all. Sounds like negligence & bad vet techs trying to work quickly to get more $$$ out of us. Seems like they can only handle small incidents with your animals. If it's something serious maybe go somewhere else. If you like mistakes, having to take your pet up multiple times, or like spending LOTS of money come here !! We sure don't so we'll be taking our business elsewhere. *we did take him to the kirkwood location one time in between visits at Manchester & kirkwood gave us a better experience just that one time than Manchester has this entire time. They're nicer & kirkwood will actually listen to you instead of cutting you off as you speak*

When it came time to say goodbye to our beloved dog, we used Lap of Love based on the clinic's recommendation. Lap of Love notified the clinic of the arrangements, and when I called to confirm they had received the information, the response was simply, "Yeah, we have the info." There was no acknowledgment of our loss, no expression of sympathy, and no mention of our dog. Unfortunately, that same lack of compassion continued when we picked up our dog's ashes. The front desk staff recognized us when we walked in, disappeared to the back, returned with the ashes, handed them to us, and that was it. No condolences. No "I'm sorry for your loss." No card, note, or acknowledgment of the life of a pet who had been a patient there for eight years. We understand that veterinary medicine is a difficult profession and that staff members experience loss regularly. However, a few simple words of kindness can mean everything to grieving pet owners. The complete absence of empathy during this process was shocking and hurtful. What happened was not simply disappointing--it was callous. After eight years of entrusting this clinic with our dog's care, the complete lack of compassion shown to our family during her passing and afterward was unacceptable. We were treated as though our dog's life meant nothing and our grief was an inconvenience. Basic human decency costs nothing, yet no one could even offer a simple acknowledgment of our loss. For a veterinary clinic, where families trust you with beloved members of their household, that level of indifference is inexcusable. The way this situation was handled left us disgusted, heartbroken, and questioning whether anyone there truly cared about the animals they serve. Based on this experience, we cannot recommend this clinic.

We've had Dr. Hodes for my Doberman, who eventually died after twelve years. The staff were so kind and accommodating when we had to let her go. Our Dobie was in such pain that she could not walk or function any longer. The staff took such great care with us, allowing time for our grief. A couple years later, we adopted a mini-Schnauzer mix. Dr. Hodes was there for us again when our little Toby was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She guides and offers suggestions when I am stressed about his condition. Because of Dr. Hodes, Toby just turned seven! Hiroko, who is the groomer, is outstanding. She handles Toby with authority, grace, and professionalism. Schnauzers can be quite rambunctious! Hiroko grooms him in the traditional Schnauzer cut, which is not easy as this little legs and head keep moving. Overall, I highly recommend County Animal Hospital. Top notch all the way.

Getting an appointment is easy. The front end staff is fine but not as interested or enthusiastic as the majority of similar staff we have encountered in other vet clinics. Getting in on the assigned appointment time is no problem. Our last appointment was for both of our dogs and we saw Dr. Stuart who is lovely. She is the reason this is a three star review as opposed to two stars. The reason we are not enthusiastic about SSVC is the following: The time it took at our last appointment was excessive - two hours for relatively outine exams. After the vet was done I stood at the front desk for more than 25 minutes waiting for a few simple prescriptions. During this time nobody came to the front and apologized for the duration of the visit or the insane wait to get the prescritions and pay the bill - which was $351.00. The bill itself was breath-taking but did not factor in on this review. In the past 25 years we have had 4 miniture schnauzers and 1 yorkshire terrier. We have lived in STL for all but 2 of those years and used 3 vet clinics in STL and one when we lived out of state. The time issues at SSVC are extrodinary as are the front end issues compared to all our other experiences. Would we recommend SSVC? Given our experience as lifelong (more than 110 years between my wife and I) dog owners we would not recommend the clinic though we really liked Dr. Stuart. It is our belief you can find better service and qualified care elsewhere.

The cut is uneven, particularly around her face, which appears choppy and not well blended. Her paws were also not cleaned up to the standard I expected. Her skin appeared irritated afterward, and there is a small area on her belly that looks consistent with a minor nick from the blade. If you have a long-haired or double-coated breed, I recommend clearly confirming grooming expectations in advance.
