I am from Connecticut and this state is known for good pizza. Not from pizza chains, I.e., Pizza Hut, Dominos, or Little Caesar, but pizza establishments owned by Italian Americans. I now live in NC, and there are very few decent pizza parlors. So when I don't want to drive to these places, I will get a frozen pizza. I purchased a Vicolo frozen pizza from Sprouts, thinking it would be good, because Sprouts sells organic food. I was so wrong. I got the sausage, pizza, and not only did I not like how it tasted, it made my stomach ache, so I tossed the other unopened pizza in the trash. I will not be buying this brand of frozen pizza again, instead I will stick to the Screaming Sicilian, if I choose to buy a frozen pizza. read more

Most frozen pizzas are not as good as a pizza restaurant, but this particular frozen pizza has to be without a doubt the worst pizza I've ever eaten. Let me start with I adore pizza. Never met a pizza I didn't like. We bought the Margherita with Fresh Basil and Roasted Mushrooms pizzas at Safeway. We were so looking forward to them. They were, with a doubt, the worst pizzas I have ever had. We literally each ate 1/2 of one piece and threw the rest in the trash. They were tasteless - tasting like cardboard or saw dust. There were almost no spices at all in the toppings, though the toppings were generous. Honestly, I'd never even give these pizzas a second try. A frozen pizza tastes better! Rene C.'s review brought back fond memories of Vicolo's former Ivy Street Location and a must stop before or after a Davies Symphony Hall event. However, all is not lost as Andronico's carries a nice selection of Vicolo Pizza and Calzone. You can also order a pie through Planet Organics, but they often have availability issues. Outside of Chicago, there is no better off-the-shelf cornmeal crust pizza available. And on Solano Avenue in Berkeley, I'll sometimes even pick up a Vicolo's Pizza over for home dining rather than order one hot from Zachary's across the street. They're that good. read more

This pizza crust has lineage. After randomly stumbling upon their ready-to-bake pizza from a Safeway in Hayward, I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of Vicolo's pizza crust. I had never heard of the company or their cornmeal inspired crust, but it was so delicious that I did some investigating. Best described as not too thin or deep-dish; the crust is not chewy, not airy, but more like smooth buttery apple pie dough--it's flaky, sturdy, and very crisp. It's good enough to be eaten all by itself. It turns out that the unique crust has an interesting backstory. Some time ago, Vicolo had a small pizza place in Hayes Valley in San Francisco; in fact, the name Vicolo means "little alley" in Italian. The most interesting part of the history is that throughout the years, the recipe for the cornmeal crust was passed down to other noteworthy pizza places over generations and spread to different renowned pizzerias including Zelo in the Los Angeles area and Dove Vivi in Portland, Oregon. Greens Restaurant in SF also has a cornmeal crust but I am not certain if it was also inspired by Vicolo's. Little Star has had deep dish cornmeal crust since 2005. As for the overall pizza experience of Vicolo's: Crust is great and the pizza toppings are good, but not as great as the crust--some may complain that the sauce (or lack of) is on top of the cheese, but I welcomed the diversion. They also sell shells to make the whole pizza from scratch and I think that might be the next experiment to try at home. Vicolo pizza is also non-GMO and organic. I'd love to find the exact recipe for the crust though (I've come close to finding what I think is a very similar one, however; message me if interested). I will close out this pizza-obsessive review by suggesting that the reader do himself or herself a favor and seek out Vicolo's cornmeal crusts, pizzas, or other products in the grocery store. Yummy in my tummy! Make your own colorful pizza or be lazy and just add cheese + hummus to the cornmeal crust. Bake for 15 min and it's delicious!!!! What's even better is that it's pesticide, GMO free :) :) :) :) Oh yea, I bought mine at Whole Foods by the hummus/cheese/deli section. The ABSOLUTE BEST PIZZA I have ever had!! I found this pizza at Whole Foods and I am so flipping happy I did. I have tried it without adding extra toppings and with! I prefer adding extra mozzarella and pepperoni to any flavor...hehe... why not!! I cook mine for 12 minutes, that's it! I have cooked it for 15 before and that is too crispy for me...12 minutes is perfect!! The cornmeal crust is devine and the ingredients are soooo fresh and delicious!! I used to frequent the Vicolo in downtown Palo Alto on University when I first contemplated and finally moved out into the area. It's been long gone now but you can still pick up the tasty cornmeal crust pizzas if you look hard enough. Definitely a fine example of a "California Pizza". May not be the same making it at home but still tasty nonetheless. read more

That was the most disgusting pizza ever. The tomato was hard and rubbery. Yuck yuck Yuck YUCK!!! Cheese so bland and nasty, taste like soap. The expiration was January 22, 2017. amazing!! I purchased the mushroom basil sundried tomato VICOLO pizza from Costco last week. today basked it in my air fryer just like the instructions said for 15 min until slightly brown. it came out so fresh tasting and delicious. the corn meal crust was perfect , the mushroom sundried tomatoes and cheese were just the right amount and tasted fresh. This is a really delicious high quality pizza. The company seems to really care about the freshness of the ingredients that go into the pizza. I love the sausage and mushroom but every variety that we have tried has been great. Picked up one of these pizzas at the market. It had the highest ratio ever of appearance to taste. Meaning...it looked great, it tasted terrible. Absolutely, the very BEST 'take home/out" pizza I have ever tasted. Bought it, brought it home, put it in the freezer, for my 'vegetarian' daughter. Baked it two days later and WE devoured it together. Cannot wait to have it again. The cornmeal crust was terrific. The mushroom, cheese, tomatoes and basil were simply over the TOP!
