mini baguette with iberico ham, rubbed with tomato
    Silvie C.

NY Times rated best ham sandwich in the world. You know I had to go twice AND grab one for the flight back home. Get the most popular iberico ham baguette that's rubbed down with tomato right before it lands in front of you. If it's later in the evening, it's never a bad idea to ask for a personal bottle of wine to sip with your sammie or just take it to go and grab a full size bottle to share with someone. The setup of this place is interesting. Piano upstairs on the landing free for customers to fool around with. In the downstairs is a U shaped bar also with bar seating around the perimeter of the entire establishment that faces away from the bar. The waitstaff speaks sufficient English, along with an all English menu. A must-have when in Barcelona.

According to the New York Times, the best ham sandwich in the world. And well, I would say that they're not far off. It's a very small cafe on La Rambla, two blocks from Plaça de Catalunya and that's the heaviest tourist part of the city. Service was fine, though I think the young lady taking my order was unhappy that I requested the English menu and didn't have enough Catalan for a proper "si us plau" or "gracias." But we still got it done. The sandwich was excellent. Terrific crusty baguette roll, nicely covered in proper jamón ibérico. It needed nothing extra. No mayo, no mustard, certainly no ketchup. Just unwrap and eat. Certainly the least expensive meal I had in Barcelona. Very, very, very good ham sandwich.

When you enter the place, it's like traveling back in time. The fresco, the marble counter and the way barista is dressed! Beside tourists, the clientele are mostly senior locals. The coffee is good, for pastries, i have tried an Ensaimadas which want good at all. Overall I recommend the place for its vibe more than its service.

"Best" Sandwich in the World-- me thinks not.

Home of the "Best Sandwich in the World" failed to wow. The best part about this place was the original old school vibe, the classical music, and the fact that we were able to find a seat. The infamous sandwich wasn't bad by any means, but it surely wasn't the best in the world-- not even the best in Barcelona. We also tried the breakfast sandwich, which was 3 types of cheese & an egg on bread grilled like a panini... unless you enjoy hot, smelly, super strong cheese, don't try this. I typically love unique, odorous, strong tasting cheeses, but heated up like this, it just didn't work, way too overpowering for the bland egg. Service was efficient without being inviting. Everyone seemed bothered, but not outright rude. Maybe they were dealing with personal things; at least they didn't take it out on the customers. Might come here again for coffee/ cappuccino, but not for food.

I had the NYT sandwich and while I won't go into detail (the folks below me have already done a great job), I will say that it is absolutely divine and definitely worth the €6,75. The fries are also very good, and perhaps better because they give you a tiny fork to eat them with. I love tiny utensils because they make my hands look big and then I feel like a giant. Anyways, this place is super busy even at weird times so I wouldn't recommend coming here with more than one or two friends, or get takeaway. Viena is a great stop for a simply delicious lunch!!

Saw this place on a travel show just before we left USA and it happens to be very near our hotel. I popped in by myself while the hubby was at an event, and they were most welcoming, to even a single lady. The man at the bar was very attentive and promptly handed me a menu, took my order, provided the sandwich and the bill in a smooth pleasant manner. I had the Mark Bittman favorite sandwich and I loved it. ( the flauta pernil d'ibéric d.o. jabugo. The flauta is a flute -- the name for a bread that we might call a small sub, or a long roll). Iberico ham is a Spanish salt cured ham. It is produced exclusively from black Iberian pigs fed on a diet of acorns. The bread is rubbed with tomato and is crunchy, crispy goodness. The Vienna salad was served in a plastic sealed container with a plastic fork, which was bit disconcerting. I guess this is a fast food kinda place, in a charming venue? The coffee came with complimentary cookies. I will go back and get a few for plane ride home!

Well I did the ordinary: follow the nytimes' advice! I had a long ham flûte (a ham baguette sandwich). And well, honestly, it tasted amazing! I almost felt guilty that the nytimes was so right on the dot. Amazing food! Very very affordable. The s buyouts cozy to say the least.

There's a reason it was named the best sandwich by the New York Times!! I stopped by Viena at least once a day for the week that I was in Barcelona. I always got the Jambon Iberique and a cappuccino. Make sure you go somewhat earlyish though...I went in the late afternoon/evening once and they ran out of the bread that they use for the sandwiches!

It was ok . Not that good

Best sandwich in the world? Come on man, get a grip. This is a very nice, simple and Central option for breakfast or lunch, just don't get over hyped on what to expect. The Jamon Iberico is delicious and at 7 Euro for a sandwich in this area, I was really happy with my meal. The coffee was also deliciously rich and creamy, and the service was very friendly. I also liked the old-world feel. I would return and recommend to others, but I would sell it for what it is- a simple and balanced meal, not the "best sandwich" that some expect when they come here.

The coffee is excellent, and the ibérico ham sandwich is delicious! This place has air conditioning which was a nice way to escape from the heat wave. We will come back!

Very good hot sandwiches. Desert with Vanilla Gelats ( Gelato). Good location where is right on La Brambla street. Price is reasonable. Sandwich is not big size as USA. But it taste good because they use high quality ingredients. I saw my neighbor guess having the thick and juicy Hamburger.

The staff was very nice and polite. We had the sandwich that new york times chose as one of the best sandwiches. I'm not sure if it's the best but it was pretty delicious.

Caravelle is quaint and modern, and the service is definitely on the more lax side. Note: smaller parties may be seated at the communal table, and this place stays busy! Be prepared for a bit of a wait. I started with a café con leche, and although I'm not usually a sweets-for-breakfast kinda person, the croffle looked too enticing online to pass up. Being a huge egg aficionado, I also ordered a side of eggs à la carte. My coffee arrived quickly, but after waiting 30 minutes, I noticed that guests who had arrived after me were already enjoying their meals... When I checked in with the waiter, it turned out my order hadn't gone through at all. I had to reorder, and while waiting, I asked for another café con leche since I was long overdue for a refill. Unfortunately, that second coffee never came--but on the bright side, my meal eventually did. The croffle was freaking divine. Crispy/flakey on the outside, and soft inside. The cream was sweet, but not overpowering, and the tart of the berries balanced out the meal. As I was getting ready to check out, the waiter asked if I had ever received my second café con leche. Embarrassed for them, I admitted that I hadn't... Realizing they'd made ANOTHER mistake, he apologized profusely and quickly asked the barista to make me one to go. To compensate for my time and patience, he generously comped my entire meal, leaving me to pay only for the initial coffee (2.50 euros). Despite the service hiccups, the food was incredible--truly one of my favorite breakfasts in Spain.
