Dinner at The View was a confusing experience, filled with conundrums. Reservations at a water-front restaurant on Long Island on a summer holiday weekend should be hard to come by but we had no trouble despite a late decision to dine here. The photos on the web site and valet parking, not to mention the menu prices, told us to expect an elegant setting and we dressed accordingly. And, in fact, the place is as beautiful in person as in the photos. But we arrived to servers dressed in khakis, blue polo shirts and tan sneakers and other diners sporting shorts, jeans and flip-flops. It began to make sense when we were handed a large prix fixe menu that included all but the most extrava- gant of the a la carte dishes. In fact, we could have our appetizer, entrée and dessert for less than the cost of of most entrées on the main menu. The View does have a specialty cocktail menu (we LOVE that) and we chose the wonderful sounding Fire Islander cocktail featuring Finlandia mango fusion vodka, Bacardi rock coconut, pomegranate and pineapple juice with a splash of grenadine and served in a glass rimmed with raspberry sugar. But what we got tasted more like punch or a kiddie cocktail and $10 is a lot to pay for fruit juice. But our disappointment ended with the arrival of bread and a dish of delectable olive oil, so good that we asked for the name of the brand. The shredded iceberg salads were chopped versions of a classic wedge and were perfectly dressed and delicious with gorgonzola cheese, applewood smoked bacon, red onion and tomato in a red wine vinaigrette. The cedar roasted Atlantic salmon with maiitake mushrooms, bok choy and snow pea shoots in a shiitake ginger broth was excellent if a bit over-salted. But the star of the evening was the Pappardelle Bolognese. This was a dish of expertly prepared pasta with a rich, creamy, well-balanced sauce of veal, beef and pork with plum tomatoes and pecorino romano, flecked with fresh basil and finished with dollop of fresh ricotta cheese. For our prix fixe desserts we chose the wild berry cheesecake with a graham cracker crust and wild berry compote. Delicious. In addition to the new American style menu, there is also a sushi option with a lone, lonely looking sushi chef off to the side. Fresh seafood on Long Island we understand but this was an odd mix of cuisines. All of the servers were young and appeared to be on summer school break. They were efficient but could do with some instruction on smiling. Our own waiter did look a bit zoned out and his movements seemed careful and deliberate. Lines of cocaine in the back room or a doctor's prescription that left him dazed, we'll never know. We do have one bone to pick with the management. That particular evening they were hosting two parties - a 60th birthday party and some sort of bridal rehearsal. The high ceilings in the room amplify sound and the two large tables were very noisy. The inside dining room does have a semi private space that would have been a better choice for these groups instead of the main dining room where the din disturbed the regular diners. Despite the lovely setting, delicious food and reasonable prices, the dining room remained half empty so we see why they are trying to lure diners with the low cost, prix fixe food. But the decor really is beautiful with a slightly nautical theme, there is a large separate bar area if you just want cocktails and revelry and the outdoor seating area is generous. Outside the grounds are well-tended with lots of flowers and it's delightful to stroll around their dock and admire the boats moored there. Although we would have preferred a more elegant dining experience, we really did enjoy the meal and, at these low prices, we'll probably return. read more

I understand we just went through a tough year for all, but this pricey restaurants have to do the right thing....that is deliver delicious food. My family came in from North Carolina haven't seen each other in close to two years. We meet for lunch at The View...Ordered lobster rolls that were completely tasteless not to mention next to nothing one the roll including many rubber pieces of the tails. What was the best part, they gave us TWO tablespoons of coleslaw in a plastic little cup so you couldn't see the amount. Coffee 4.50 a cup make that a small coffee cup. We got married here a few years back and it's really the perfect spot for a wedding. There's sushi Fri-Sun and it's really good! All the food is good including the catering. Staff is friendly. While in town from Rochester, NY, visiting family on Long Island, we decided to check out this place on a Sunday night for dinner. We did not have a reservation, and went a little early, close to 5 pm, thinking at least we wouldn't mind to wait a bit if they were full. We were pleasantly surprised that though they were pretty busy, with most tables inside and out full, they were still able to seat us immediately, and at our preference: outside on the 'deck' with the famous view of the wharf/boat yard and all the boat traffic. The entire experience was excellent. From the friendly and efficient hostess, to our bubbly and attentive server, to the quality of the food and atmosphere. There are more details to come, but I'll say this now: this place is highly recommended! First, the seating: the interior space is divided into a bar area with high-stool/bar seating and a few 'regular' tables, and a more formal dining room with big windows, skylights and lots of great light. Both interior spaces can get a little loud when the restaurant is full, but they looked comfortable, and no matter where you are you can see the water outside. The outside seating on the 'deck' area is great - a mix of couches/benches and low tables for those just enjoying the view and cocktails, and tables for parties of 2 and up there to dine. We chose the latter so we could have the fresh air, sunshine and smell of the sea. On this night they also had live music playing - a solo guitarist singing a mix of old and new pop and rock tunes - it was not too loud, but you could definitely enjoy it; outside in general the din was manageable, and we enjoyed being able to talk at our normal volume and not needing to shout to be heard. Second, the parking: while you might be able to park yourself somewhere outside of the restaurant lot and walk over (or, for those in boats, you could probably dock there), once you drive into the lot, there is valet parking. The lot is big but very full and the valets are very efficient. I am not sure what it cost (I didn't pay), but we only had to wait a couple minutes to get our car when we were ready to leave. Third, the dress code: totally mixed. There were women in dresses and guys in shirts with ties, and also lots of folks in shorts and golf shirts. I would say that it is pretty casual, but you also wouldn't be out of place if you were a little more dressed up. Finally, the food: everything was fresh and delicious! We ordered frozen rose wine cocktails (very potent!) and beers - all served within 5 minutes of our order; we had appetizers of the sushi donut (a rice 'ring' stuffed with spicy tuna covered in sashimi served with ginger and wasabi) and crab cakes (two per order). We got a single order of each for 4 people to share. We each got a quarter of the donut and a half of a crabcake. Combined with the garlic bread rolls they also brought to the table, this was a perfect amount of food for us for appetizers. In terms of quality, the sushi was fresh and delicious; the crabcakes were served with a corn relish and guacamole, and were really tasty and moist - about an inch and a half in diameter, about 2 inches high - nice size and cooked perfectly. For our mains, two of us had their sushi bowls - basically poke bowls with your choice of tuna or salmon or a combo of both; you could have it with rice or salad (we both did salad - which was spring greens mix, also very fresh), and then add crab salad, seaweed salad and a few other things we didn't get. The portion size was large and we were both struggling to finish our bowls, but they were so good. Another of our party got the ceasar salad as his main - he described it as good, like the standard, but not that fancy; and the other got two side dishes as her main: lobster risotto and spinach. The portions were served in cup-size soup bowls and were actually a lot of food despite what it looked like. The menu apparently changes here often, so look for other dishes in the future; in addition, their dessert menu looked great but we just couldn't do it. Too full! We really liked the experience and I would definitely go back. This seems like a great place for a date night, or to celebrate a party; with live music you could make a night of it; with the amazing cocktail list and menu, I could see going back often. read more

My wife took me out for a birthday dinner and we were headed to the Snapper Inn. We pulled up and they had an affair and no table seating for over 2 hours. We left and that's when we noticed the sign for View. We pulled in and the valet told us to park anywhere we wanted so we picked a spot by the door overlooking the water. We were greeted with smiles and led to a cozy table in the closed in outdoor deck with an amazing view of the boats and water. We started with baked clams which were a little well done but thats the way we like them and a glass of wine. Ny wife had the shrimp tacos and i had the salmon over pea risotto. They were both big portions, fresh and delicious. Service was un-rushed and friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing and calming. A great time and meal for a memorable birthday. read more

I hosted a small Bridal Shower here. We were in the bar area which was sectioned off for us. It was considered "semi-private". Aside from people sometimes trying to cut through- it definitely felt private and was perfect for our small group. The food was good, atmosphere great. Our waitress Corey was absolutely wonderful. She really did a great job making sure our drinks were always full and even helped us set up our decorations. My only issue was I got many different answers about whether or not the occasion cake was included and almost felt like I was getting the run around about it. I also was never aware at time of booking that our buffet was in a completely separate room and shared with the rest of the restaurant, maybe that was my confusion . Regardless- it ended up being wonderful and the staff was so accommodating. I definitely recommend this location! read more

What a wonderful experience we had . Decor is beautiful inside and out . Was a beautiful evening so we enjoyed sitting at lounge tables for a party of 4 overlooking the river . The service was great we had a wonderful , sweet and truly awesome waitress Danielle who helped us order from the menu . Everything she suggested was fantastic . The lobster sushi roll the lady in pink both delicious , seafood tower all good we ordered two of them ( seafood really fresh ) the steamed buns where incredible , Cesar salad , tuna tartar light and flavorful with a touch of sesame seeds and served with wonton chips for dipping . We even enjoyed a medley of desserts which where all great and hit the spot ( churro a, pb&j and the warm chocolate cake ) . All in all the night was great from food , service and ambiance . We can't wait to go back and enjoy it again . A plus is the live music that plays from 7- 12 great smooth sounds and creates for an even better atmosphere . We pulled in for parking and were told that it was $10 parking, but they return the money if you validated inside. Just presume you will never see that money again. It was a perfect night and the view was incredible. Our waitress took our drink order and we looked over the menu. We started with crabcakes and some oysters. Both were really good. The oysters were fresh and tasted great. If you like oysters and have been to a place that seemed to not have the best ones, you know how good it is to have great ones. My dinner was the free-range oven roasted chicken. Served with gnocchi and mushrooms with a savory truffle-made sauce that really was incredible. It was a great choice. For dessert, we shared the Valrona Chocolate Bomb. It was a decadent series of flavors. Salted caramel and overwhelming chocolate. The staff was great too. A manager came over to check on us and the waitress was over at all the right times. Overall, the food is incredible and the view is top notch. The staff is great. 2/11/23 - We had 4pm reservations for two. There was a shower breaking down and we witnessed seats with decent tables and chairs where we could have been seated. We were seated at a wobbly table with horrible uncomfortable outdoor chairs. Thank goodness the food was reasonably good, but it was the most horrible Saturday dinner we ever experienced. We are both 80 and love dining out in places with comfortable seating, atmosphere and decent service. If we had been apprised that we would be seated on a brick enclosed patio, we would have gone elsewhere. We eat out every Saturday and enjoy fine dining and are generous tippers. This experience was HORRIBLE! We have contacted The View with our complaint but since they don't seem to care about customers in the first place, we expect no answer or apology. read more

Enjoyed duck taco appetizer which was very good and both entrees were excellent. The yellow tuna w/black rice was so good I couldn't get enough of the coconut curry sauce it came with. My husband and I had a delicious dinner with a beautiful "view" hence the name! MMMMM Sunday Brunch! I've been here 3 times, twice for Sunday brunch and one other time for a bridal shower. The food and service are fantastic. The Sunday brunch is a really good deal for what you get, buffet items include short rib, eggs benedict, homefries, bagels, desserts, crablegs, sushi, carving station, pasta, and a lot more. It started with wine...sauvignon blanc...and blue point summer for my boyfriend...we decided on our meals (cheeseburger w ff, and a view Cobb salad) and told Patricia no rush...so we sat for a while and enjoyed our drinks, the view, our conversation, but then it seemed like an awfully long time and our food did not come yet...we absolutely said no rush, but it was close to 45 mins since we ordered and watched a couple of other tables meals come out before ours. Patricia popped by (the restaurant was pretty busy and she had tables spread out across the restaurant) and was now surprised because she thought they had sent it out and was checking on us. Patricia went to the kitchen, worked her magic, and within minutes our food was delivered to our table and it was definitely freshly made (not sitting in dead in the window). We both fully enjoyed our meals. His burger was juicy, tender, and flavorful. Gooey cheese, nice fresh bun, and served with crispy, tasty fries. My cobb salad had jumbo shrimp, Roquefort, avocado, bacon, egg, mixed greens, red onion, croutons and a house dressing (dressing on side). It was a big, satisfying salad. It was fresh, shrimp were perfect, there were a nice amount of shrimp, and overall a great choice for lunch. Once finished we asked for the bill where Patricia had a round taken off for the long wait. We didn't ask. We weren't mad. We were given truly impeccable customer service. My advice is if you do plan on having a meal here, please realize this is not super fast paced dining. Even watching other people get served before us, the food still takes a little while to reach your table. I feel like this is somewhere you go to really relax, to have a nice meal with someone, or enjoy some family time...there is no rush...not that there is no sense of urgency because there is, there is also the sense of creating the atmosphere of calm. The View in Oakdale, NY is one of the best restaurants on Long Island. The outdoor seating is amazing with 270 degree water views. We've been going there for several years and the last few years we've seen a great restaurant become an excellent restaurant due to the manager, Joseph. He goes out of his way to meet you and make you feel welcomed. His staff is attentive and they do whatever they can to give you the best experience. The menu has has something for everyone and the food is very good. We have some excellent restaurants on Long Island and The View is definitely in the top five! read more

I had a lobster roll last summer. It was delicious. So I went back yesterday. It was HORRIBLE. No seasoning, no salt, no pepper, no mayonnaise, no lemon or dill. It's advertised as have lemon & dill in the sandwich. The lobster itself was all flake from the tiny claws. There were no chunks of claw or tail. Also, red onion and some sort of leaf was in the mix. This was not mentioned on the menu. I not only hate red onion but it actually make me nauseous. This was the worst lobster roll I have ever had. No taste, was not delivered as advertised and made on the cheap with subpar lobster. I thought maybe this is my fault because I ordered a gluten free bun. And got a cardboard wrap, which I did not eat. I was so stunned by the reversal, I thought I might have been imagining how good it was last year. But today I see the lobster roll written up on Newsday. What? Did your critics have it last year and not go back before publication? Worst thing I ever ate. Really. Seriously. read more

When I went, it was staffed by a bunch of high school- college kids, rather than the career servers, so the tone was not great. There was a very lackadaisical attitude. Don't get me wrong, they did their job adequately and were never outright offensive, just didn't quite yet have the maturity to figure out expectations when grown ups go out (I'm only in my 30s.) There were some very redeeming busboys/assists that were wonderfully polite, accommodating and appropriate. Hope they got tipped out hard. Recommend the aka lobster app and the kale salad. Waterfront dining speaks to my soul. I just love sipping on cocktails while watching the boats on the water. We had such nice service and the braised short ribs were so perfectly tender. The best way to top off your dinner is to get the Dance with the Devil. It's a massive dessert for 2 that layers a brownie, peanut butter cups, oreos, ice cream, whipped cream and cherries. Let's face it, several people can share that! I also love that they have a full sushi bar! I'll definitely visit VIEW in the future and tell others to do the same. read more

I can't say enough good things about the View! We recently had my wife's 40th birthday party there on a Friday night in the "Grill Room" and everything was absolutely perfect. I'm not much of a planner, but Joe and Jimmy were incredibly helpful with selecting the food choices and guiding me in the right direction. They advised me to do a cocktail party and they were right on point. Guests were able to mingle and enjoy a great night out. The waitstaff, Courtney and Candice were incredibly friendly, organized and on top of everything. Hors d'oeuvres were plentiful and passed continuously. Chaffing dishes were absolutely delicious and never less than half full and the cake was amazing. There was never a wait for drinks and everyone left raving about the location, food, and drinks. Can't thank the View enough for helping me to throw my wife a party she and our friends and family will never forget. We will definitely be dining and visiting often. The food is pricey but very good. I started with the Ahi Tuna tacos. Very good but be warned they're very small. My wife started with the octopus which was delish. She had the tile fish which was very good while I had the Yellowtail Stuka aka Allan ha which was fantastic. The reason this is not a better rating is that the service was terrible. It took 35 minutes and me saying something twice before we saw our server and it didn't get any better throughout the meal. Really disappointed with my experience tonight. My wife and I go to to the view for every special occasion, but I am sad to say tonight will be our last. The service was horrific. We had to ask 3 different people for bread and it didn't come until the end of our apps. Our lobster bisque came out with a film on it, looking like it sat there for a while, and there wasn't a single shred of lobster in it. I had the surf and turf which was good, but my wife's swordfish was so dry it was inedible. The real kicker was when a busser came and took her plate without asking if she was finished. she asked the busser to wrap it or bring a box so we could wrap it because she wanted to give it to the dog. After a few minutes we saw the busser and asked where the leftovers were. He looked nervous and said he would go check so obviously our leftovers were thrown out. We waited a little while to talk to a manager but he was nowhere to be found, we even looked around to find him as we walked out. The host stand was empty so we couldn't ask to speak with him. My first time at View was for a bridal shower. With valet parking, we were easily able to bring our gifts into the room without a hassle. The hostess graciously directed us toward the inside area where the party was being held. The open view of the bay was a welcome addition. It was a Sunday and everyone there could join the service line for their choice of food for brunch. I chose the shorter line where they served made-to-order omelettes and juicy slices of beef and pork. A steady flow of orders was managed by a friendly exchange between the individual preparing our omelettes with the patrons waiting their turn. The staff serving mimosa's timed refilling our glasses precisely well! I also observed the skill full attentiveness to the needs of those in our party, especially the attendants of the bride. Very nice place in a great location the name is very fitting because the "view" is fantastic. My father has food allergies and once we inquired about foods he could eat the manger came over, who went above and beyond to go over the menu about specifics. They are extremely accommodating to people with food allergies. The crab cakes are probably the best I've had on Long Island. Duck tacos & Tai calamari also perfect. Try the scallops over lobster risotto you won't be disappointed. We enjoyed everything from start to finish. The bread is even great.
