I make every attempt to render fair ratings to businesses, and I reserve low marks for those that earn them. I can't bring myself, however, to award any more than a few stars for the lodging experience at the Viking. First, we were quoted one price over the phone for the specific Saturday overnight stay that we reserved. But when we checked in, we were charged $70 more than the quoted price. The Asian clerk was very difficult to understand with heavy accent, and she just kept saying "Weekend always that price." We contested but to no avail. Secondly, we found that our room had dirty baseboards, caked mold on the shower faucet handles, mold under the sink, and to our horror, we found bed bugs under the mattress cover. Having stayed before in other Solvang motels, I can say that one can do much better than lodging at the Viking. read more

A very well located place in Solvang, just on the corner of where all the shops begin and a much cheaper option than the other hotels in the area. Plus they are pet friendly (the owners have a very well trained german shepard that almost makes you wanna pet it) and they give you complimentary coffee and a pastry (which are GOOD) from Olsen's bakery. The rooms are a bit small but just the perfect size for two people. It seems like it's old but the bed is comfortable, the heater heats up the room pretty quickly. The only thing I would recommend to management, considering in the winter time it gets really cold, is to add a small rug in the bathroom because the cement tile is freezing, forcing you to use up all the towels in the bathroom to not have your feet frozen. One other little thing would be to add a small phone in the room in case you can't use your cell phone (like in my case, I forgot to bring my charger and had the phone off at night time) and need to call the front desk. read more

Apparently, I took a lot of photos of this place & posted them last year in July, but never wrote a review...oops, Ok. I really like this place. First because it's inexpensive, and second it's easy to walk to everywhere you want to go, it's clean and the staff is nice. I think it is family owned. I stayed here last year on a wine tasting road trip. I think it's the least expensive place to stay in Solvang. I did my research. They have everything you need, Fridge, Microwave, Air Con/Heater and Ice machine outside. No coffee pots though. Last year when I stayed the air con was really great since it was super hot. I recently went back to stay early in March once again. I got a different room, this time w double queen beds. The beds are comfortable and clean, they also have extra pillows in the closet. I had to use the heater this time and it worked well. Our shower was great with good water pressure. The lady at the front desk was nice and she knew that we had been there last year. When we left she said, "See you again next year!" It's nothing fancy, but it's clean, safe and affordable. I never spend much time in my hotel rooms because I spend most of the time exploring, so it works out perfect for me. The only thing I don't like is that they don't have an online system to book rooms. You have to call them. read more

I did not expect much, as I chose the least expensive accommodations in the area. However, the motel fell short even of my low expectations. I'll list the good and the bad. Pros Good location - easily walkable to all of downtown Solvang, right next to a little market, decent parking options One story - no one above you Very nice guys at the front desk at night Free wifi Mini fridge Cons I asked for a quiet room - they put me in the interior, which was nice, but then they put people with a giant barking dog and an alarm clock of a woman yelling at 7:55am each morning right next to me. Toilet didn't work Everything was uncomfortable - the bed, the sheets, the comforter, the threadbare towels, the room which alternated between being too hot and too cold. I essentially did not sleep for two nights. Little packets of "conditioning shampoo" were all that were provided - definitely bring your own products unless you want dry, crispy hair. The bathroom was terrible - tub peeling, caulking badly needed, permanent drip stains, etc. There is no breakfast. They give you a coupon for a danish and coffee across the street, but the options are limited, and I don't really think what amounts to cake is a fun way to start the day. I think the reason this place was such a letdown was that with just a tiny investment of money, they could make it so much better. There aren't that many rooms. Like even buying some towels from Costco that were not the size of hand towels would make a big difference. Or hiring someone to do some routine maintenance on the bathrooms. Or buying cheap but new comforters and sheets from some supply store. They could recoup the money very fast without raising prices (because at these prices, for a place that looks like no updates have been made in decades, they're surely pulling in a profit). If you are just looking for the most basic, cheap place to stay within walking distance of downtown, this is a good choice. If you're thinking this will be comparable to a Super 8, you will be disappointed. read more

This review is relative. Is it a 4 star hotel? No. But for the price in the area it was perfect. My wife and I needed a last minute room and we stayed here for a wedding. Despite the place being dated, the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was ok. My husband and I spent the weekend at the ​Viking​ Motel. The best thing about Viking Motel was the proximity to all Solvang attractions for a competitive​ price. Upon arrival,​ we checked into the front desk. We were received courteously​ and quickly entered our room. We had the basic amenities which were a ​television (cable), wi-fi, refrigerator​, hair blower, conditioner, soap, and towels. On the contrary​ to other reviews,​ I believe the bed was comfortable and room somewhat clean. The room's curtains​ and towels had some stains. They anticipated​ having glass cups for wine if purchased. They had hardwood floors in the room and tile​ floors in the bathroom. The bathroom did not have curtains but I believe the type of window does not allow transparency​ from the outside. Check-out was also done quickly and we got a complimentary​ pastry​ and coffee at Olsen's Danish Village Bakery. Tip: If you arrive early or check out early there is sufficient parking spaces and public restrooms in the middle of the town. read more

Stayed there last night for $99. Was in town for a work function and could have stayed at the Corque for $179 and wish I had. Room was good sized, with faux hardwood floors and no rugs or carpets of any kind. Was pretty cold, along the tile in the bathroom which of course is to be expected. It seemed clean enough, but there was an insect issue, we believe due to the fact that the door wasn't very well weather-stripped. Had a few ants marching across the floor this morning, and a couple of spiders around, a small one of which was on the pillow when we turned down the bed last night. Was very "motelish", thin pillows and towels, no shelving in the bathroom, just a shower stall, no bathtub. Didn't try wifi, so can't comment on that. Mattress was pretty good, actually slept well, but left first thing. Not the place you want to hang out. read more

Fairly often I visit Solvang. I almost always stay at the Viking due to it"s located close to downtown, always clean, and beds are comfortable. The owner Tracy is always cheerful and welcoming. Rates are best in town as far as I know. and coupons for coffee and pastry at the bakery just down the street are provided for each day of your stay. read more

This tiny hotel was exactly that I wanted: for less than $100 (all other surrounding hotels were at least twice as much btw) I got us a clean room with comfortable bed and a great location (Solvang is not that big at all, you can walk everywhere and a day is more than enough to spend there). Hotel is definitely not Bellagio, but you get what you pay for. The staff was very nice and super helpful. I highly recommend this place and I will stay here again. read more

Stayed here for a night on a road trip to SF. Not the most luxurious place but gets the job done at a good price. Biggest plus is that it's Dog Friendly. Was clean, easy to walk to restaurants and wine tasting, and parking was available for us. I'd stay there again. Thank you! read more

Overall great experience here. The owner was kind and very sweet. This place is the cheapest to stay at on the street and I am happy that I did. Rooms were fine, nothing extravagant, but that is expected. The motel and the bakery across the street have a deal where you can go get a pastry and coffee for free if you are staying at the Viking. Can't beat fresh baked goods! They have a AAA deal as well. Everything was as good as we hoped there! Will return next time! read more

The 4 is for a simply fantastic value. On a weekend where everywhere else was charging in the neighborhood of $200, I got into the Viking for $112 (inclusive of tax). It doesn't include breakfast, there's no wi-fi, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a clock anywhere in the room. But the owner is just as sweet as she can be, the place is well-maintained and clean, and the rooms are actually much more charming than those you may find in the more classically "Danish" motels. A great location right across from Paula's Pancake House will ensure you don't miss some cheap complimentary breakfast. The rooms have showers, not baths--not an issue for us with older kids, but I remember when they were little this would have been an issue. I like that the room has flooring and not carpeting. The heating/AC unit is loud, but you probably won't want it on while you sleep anyways, because the covers are heavy. The hotel fronts a side street, and in back is a residential area, so noise is absolutely not an issue. The sign for the place is big, but the brown color blends with the rest of the place, so keep your eye open for something that looks more like a house from the front (there are only 10 rooms and the place is tiny). If we stay in Solvang again, this will be my go-to. read more

While staying there we returned to our room and I jumped in the shower. My husband came into the bathroom and told me someone else's stuff was in the room. He went to the manager and she said that they weren't sure we were staying. Even if there was some kind of confusion, there is NO GOOD REASON to give two sets of keys to the same room to two unrelated guests. When I asked the manager, she said they do this all the time because people leave town without returning the keys. So be warned, your belongings are not safe at the Viking Motel... anyone could have a copy of your key. read more

My boyfriend and I had to stay here for a few nights while our home was being worked on. By FAR the least expensive place in Solvang to stay, plus they even allow pets! The king bed was super cozy (made me think about upgrading my own haha). The tv was near the bed, which worked out perfect for me because anything further than a few feet and I'm as blind as a bat. Staff was very friendly. The location is right smack dab in the middle of town, which worked out better than the Motel 6 we had to stay at a few years ago. My husband and I made a reservation for two nights. On our first morning, I noticed that our receipt read that we would be checking out that day, so I went to the office to clarify that we'd be staying another night, then we went about our day. When we returned to the room that night, I immediately hopped in the shower. A few minutes later my husband came into the bathroom to tell me that someone else's belongings were in the room. He went to the office and they said that they weren't sure we were staying. Huh? Regardless of any confusion, which I'm still not clear on why they were confused, giving two sets of keys to two unrelated parties is completely inappropriate. I asked the manager and she said that this happens all the time because people often forget to return their keys. So, it's common practice for this place to rent rooms when other people are still in possession of the keys. Sure, you can use the chain when you are in the room, but when you aren't, your things are not safe. In the end, I had to run across the lawn halfway through my shower because we were the ones expected to relocate. Then the manager charged our credit card three times and I am still fighting to get the money back. It is a great location because you are right in the village, but the bed in the first room was concave and very uncomfortable; the shower in the first room was a pain... no matter how I maneuvered the curtain, water got all over the floor. In the second room, the tub wouldn't drain at all during a shower unless I held the lever that opened the drain. I would never stay here again. Did I mention that they gave the key to my room to someone else?! I still can't process how nonchalant the manager was about that. read more

We stayed there on a Monday night. As on our way to Cambria & just needed a place to sleep for the night. Husband used Siri to find a list of hotels then called asking what's your price for tonight for 2 with tax etc. It was a little after 10pm & he was told $80. So we arrived @10:20 checked the room the bed wasn't to soft so took it! Put our stuff inside ran across the street to the Solvang Brewery as know it has wonderful food. As closing at midnight ordered ASAP. Returned to our room noticed the hole in the floor by the closet oh well only here for the night. Hubby took a shower the water doesn't drain so your standing in water. Plus the towels so old thin & pretty rough. I then chose to shower once in Cambria! Plus we we're in room 11 & the walls are so thin even with it not being the one closer to the road you could hear every car going down the road. No coffee pot even in the room! Up early & husband goes in to the office & asked about the danish coupon they say you get as that's their breakfast. Chinese guy says "with your low rate you don't get a coupon for danish". This is when you lost another star - really does it say lower rates don't get the coupon? And you gave us this rate we didn't barter with you for the price. Anyway my suggestion is look elsewhere! read more

Motel is what your getting indeed. 2 star only for the affordable price nothing more nothing less. Out dated and obliviously not up to standards with house keeping. Upon our checkin the odd smell of the so called lobby was indefinitely present which had carried over to our room. The fridge had not been cleaned out from the previous guest prompting me to check the room even before sleeping underneath the sheets. Dust underneath the bed, behind the head board behind and above everything you don't normally get into. Bathroom was not impressive at all, basic shower and shower head modified with some sort of sprinkler style head which pressurized the water steam and felt more like a whipping steam of water moving at 180mph... Ouch! I believe they offered a continental breakfast which I wasn't about to gamble on. I tolerated the room and thought you all should know. It was the cheapest room for the new year in the area. read more

If you just need a place to sleep while you're visiting Solvang, the Viking Motel is the least expensive place I found. Completely unpretentious, clean, has a refrigerator and microwave in the room, some tables and chairs outside on the lawn, and you get 1 coupon for each night of your stay for free pastry and coffee at Solvang's #1 tourist trap, Olsen's Bakery. You need to phone to make a reservation, the website is kinda just for show. It's a bit noisy, too, because it's on a busy corner (5th and Mission; Mission is the main street). read more

Clean rooms, good beds, NICE laminate flooring, easy parking, WONDERFUL Staff, small market across the street, hotel next door is a casino shuttle stop.
