Villa de Colombia, is a great place to get together with family and friends. Yesterday we celebrated my grandmother's birthday! We were a big group of 25 people, with children and grandchildren. The food, drinks and ambiance were great. The sangria and empanadas were spot on! Delicious, although the empanadas are tiny, they are packed with flavor. It's a must-have appetizer to have with their homemade hot sauce. I ordered the traditional Bandeja Paisa. It was a delicious combo of steak, rice, beans, fried pork belly and a fried egg. I also nibbled on their french fries; hot and crunchy! Desert was also really good with a cup of cafe con leche. The best cafe con leche I've ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant. Villa De Columbia is one of the best Columbian restaurant I've been to. Its actually one of my top five restaurants. First off, I LOVE byob restaurants so automatically they get points for that. The food great and service is always friendly.and welcoming. They keep a steady crowd but they're never over crowded. The menu is extensive; full of a variety of Columbian dishes. They have sangria on the menu and some yummy appertizers and desserts. My favorite dishes are the bandeja paisa with skirt steak, chicken limon, oxtail soup, fish soup, columbian sausage and so much more. They know how to cook a steak medium rare. With all the flavorful juice that can be added to the rice & beans omg. This is heaven for my tastebuds. I'm not a hue fan of their chimichurri blend but I don't even use it. It doesn't even need it. Also love the mango shakes. Empanadas are pretty great too. But. Okay - so i've heard a lot of comparison's to NOCHES and here is my verdict. Ambiance: Noches vs. Villa - Noches more of a down to earth feel, Villa a little more bergen county feel but nice none the less - I'd say equal. Empanadas: (Colombian style beef patties - the shell is not flour based its corn based - these are yellow) I have to say - Villa's empanadas were really damn good. It was late on a Friday night which always means there is a chance they'll taste old BUT it was nicely crisp and fresh tasting with lots of meat. (Lately, I've had a couple of noches empanadas that had too much potato) - Villa wins. AJI: (hot sauce made from veggies) You can't have empanadas with out aji. Villa had a good aji - it was fresh. I hate when aji tastes like hot sauce with a couple of chopped scallions in it. This was "homemade" with lots of veggies and delicious. However, it does not compete with the aji served at noches at all. I go to noches simply for their aji. NOCHES WINS. AREPA DE CHOCLO: (Sweet Corn Pie? - maybe i don't know if id' say pie lol) NOCHES is not a bakery. Sure they make pan de bonos at noches but they are not a bakery and so it is reflected in the quality of their arepa de choclo - which is merely okay. VILLA had an amazing arepa! IT had chunks of corn in there which reminds me of homemade arepas - VILLA WINS. BANDEJA PAISA: (Google this too much to explain lol) I rarely order bandeja paisa because frankly, I'm trying to avoid a heart attack. But, being at a new restaurant, one of us had to try the Bandeja. So my boyfriend went for it. You had the option of upgrading to a Churrasco Bandeja Paisa - that option alone beats NOCHES 100% - Sorry Noches- if you offered baby Churrasco on your Bandeja Paisa it would be equal. Beans: I love beans - and if you're asking what kinds of beans then you're not colombian - obviously red beans! Anyway, I love red beans - I can eat them day and night. Noches does a decent job, but VILLA had very tasty beans as well. I'd say - they're both equal. Rice: Don't ask what kind of rice - it's always white. It was actually good - tasted ALMOST like my mom's. Not bland. Villa wins. Menu Selection: Noches has an extremely large selection of food - as does VILLA, but I felt that VILLA was much more creative. They had a lot of Villa style plates and a lot of different combinations. I wish I had tried the mar y tierra salteado - I didn't. I couldve compared it to NOches' Salteado but instead I was lured in by the Tilapia Villa - which was good. Generous size - but the sauce was too creamy for me and I didn't get rice with my food, so I just couldn't finish it. My boyfriend devoured it the next day. SERVICE: This place was not busy, but it was also almost closing time. Service here was good our waiter was very nice and attentive and spoke english ( I heard him talking to the other tables), but I guess you have to in Bergen County! lol Anyway, he constantly came by as did the other waitresses. But, again, it was pretty empty. I'd say Villa slightly beats Noches out on service but remember noches is always slammed with people so it's a difficult comparison. Hackensack, NJ, is one of those older, poorer cities that tends to be visited during work hours and is a little dicey at night. But tucked away in downtown Hackensack, there is a little gem of a restaurant called Villa de Colombia. This Colombian has a modern, crisp, clean and comfortable decor and a solicitous, skilled wait staff. That's a nice base on which to build and a delicious menu completes a terrific dining experience. The shrimp in garlic butter had this little citrus finishing note that made them a delicious treat. They should use a larger shrimp, even if it adds to the price a little. At $8, it could take another hit for larger shrimp. The main courses were exciting. Bandeja Paisa, a very traditional Colombian dish, featured a crispy pork strip and a delicious steak with rice, beans and a fried egg on top. Very special. Villacol, a house specialty, is a perfectly prepared (medium rare) skirt steak accompanied by shrimp wrapped in crispy bacon and creamy smooth mashed potatoes. Villa de Colombia is a real treat, and very reasonably priced. Hackensack doesn't deserve its bad reputation, particularly when there's such a dining delight right in the center of the city. read more

This is a REALLY great hidden gem in Hackensack. I have been here twice now, once for dinner for my sister's birthday and again recently for BREAKFAST! That's right, I said breakfast. It is insanely yummy, but I'll get to that in a minute. The dinner we had here was phenomenal. It was last June and I was very impressed by all aspects. They not only offer chicharron as an appetizer, but also include it free of charge with MANY of their main entrees. All of their entrees are seriously enormous and satisfying, with true authentic Colombian flavor. While all their food is superb, I came here mainly to write about their breakfast. Because I feel that not a lot of people know that they serve breakfast but they SHOULD! They have a huge breakfast menu with tons of very traditional Colombian breakfasts on it. I ordered the carne molida which was ground beef with eggs. I would NEVER have imagined having ground beef for breakfast but it was fabulous! It had so much spice and flavor, absolutely amazing. I also got the eggs scrambled with tomatoes and onions in them (as per my waiter's suggestion) and they were so great! Villa De Columbia also makes their own hot sauce, which has little chunks of onion and such in it. This hot sauce is the BOMB. I put that all over my ground beef, my breakfast was soo good. And, it was enough for 2 breakfasts! They literally gave me so much food that I was able to bring half home and have it another day during the week! Aside from my carne molida, my boyfriend ordered the higado asado, which is beef liver served with an arepa. Again, who would think to have this for breakfast? This liver was so delicious, seasoned so perfectly. He'd never had liver before and he ate it all up. The arepa came served with melted cheese on top and he ordered a side of eggs which he put on top of the arepa, and it was so yummy! Everything about this breakfast was on point. It's enough for 2 lunches, easy. The food is overall quite good. It's never the best, but always well prepared, fresh, hot and good. We're partial to the bistek a caballo, pechuga en salsa de champinones, and pechuga primavera. Not a huge fan of the soups - I would opt for the salad or beans if I were you. Take that with a grain of salt though, as I've never had other Colombian-style soups and may just not understand them. Most of the staff and patrons are solely Spanish-speaking. However, the woman who answers the phones and seems to run the front of the house is bilingual and probably the most efficient person I've ever run across. read more

We have been patronizing Villa de Colombia for years initially on the recommendation of a Colombian friend. We prefer this restaurant to every other Colombian restaurant in the area. The food is nicely prepared and presented. We enjoy their meat and seafood combinations. Their menu is extensive enough to make everyone satisfied. Their prices are reasonable and the portions are more than sufficient. The wait staff is very accommodating and very helpful assisting with menu descriptions and recommendations. Steak, fried pork strip (which was my favorite part), avocado, pico de gallo, a fried egg, rice, beans, and sweet plantains-all delicious. It was seriously enough to feed 2 or 3 people. Service and quality are very good, but I always come back for the food. I would give this place solid 3.5 stars. Came in for lunch during the week. From what i could tell they didn't offer any lunch specials just their daily special but not a special price. They have a very large menu and pretty much anything Colombian you could want. The restaurant is large and seems to have plenty of seating. Service was average.. the sever didn't seem to go out of her way or make much conversation at all. Beware the they include tip on the receipt and have a line for additional tip. I didn't notice this until it was too late. So that average waitress got an extra nice tip. :( read more
