My Mom was recently a resident of this facility and the experience was horrible. The staff are not attentive to the residents needs, the facility is filthy, don't let the outside fool you. Outdoor areas are not very large, but they are clean and have enough sitting furniture available. The place also has a good size chapel with mass service everyday. I worked as a per diem nurse at Villa Maria from 2005 to 2008 approximately; don't quite remember the exact dates. I have the fondest memories of a supportive work environment where we worked so hard to care for our patients, with so much love and abnegation toward a population group with complex health-demanding conditions. The effort and teamwork united us toward the same goal: to protect our patients from harm. It is a demanding field of ours indeed, so easily tarnished by negative reviews no matter how sincerely we strive to fulfill our ethical duty of beneficence toward our patients. During hurricane recovery periods, we worked longer shifts under the most taxing conditions but we never relented in our commitment to our patients. One of my professors in nursing school (Miami Dade) worked at Villa Maria, and she is to this date a source of inspiration to my nursing practice. I am now working as a nurse in Colorado, again so lucky to work in a supportive work environment. I remember to this date the thankfulness of some of my patients. I remember the voice of one of them, yelling my name down the corridor to come to change his diabetic ulcer wound dressings. I remember to this date the precious smile of an end-stage renal failure patient whose wounds were under my care. I remember to this date the sweet face of thankfulness of my very first patient receiving the bed bath I gave her fresh from nursing school. I remember manually disimpacting a patient who offered me such a heart-felt thank you that I was moved. To all of my patients at Villa Maria, I am the one to thank you. My step mother was here for two weeks after shoulder surgery and left in worse shape than she was when she went in. They did not monitor the fact that she had not gone to the bathroom - was constipated and had not urinated in two weeks. Then they actually released her to my father's house where she slipped and ended up in Adventura Hospital for two weeks. Now we have to find a new place for her to rehab since they have been able diagnose the bowel and urination problems. Her shoulder is now the least of her problems. She has to learn to walk again because she has been bedridden for so long. The medical attention is poor based on above. Also there is no physical therapy on the weekends or the date you are released. read more

My Mother broke her hip and was sent here for rehab. 6 days there and fell out of bed. 14 days there and was told no significant progress was being made and insurance will stop paying, staff recommend's discharge. After family meeting she stayed another week and fell out of wheelchair. Avoid. read more

My mom has been at Villa Maria three times now for physical therapy and patient care following hospitalization. Each time she was treated with respect, empathy, and given the best of care. They picked up my mom from the hospital after 10:00 p.m. meals are horrible, staff is unfriendly and everyone points the finger at the other one. No call backs either. Where do I start? Villa Maria on 125th Street North Miami needs to shut down and start all over again. My mother was a patient there for about 2-3 weeks and the care she received was horrible. The medical staff was not pleasant and talked to patients and visitors rudely. My mother was transferred from the hospital and was told her room would be ready on arrival, but that was a lie. The paramedics stated this always happens with Villa Maria. The rooms are extremely dirty, at one point my family and I called for maintenance to come and clean the bathroom that had previous feces all over the shower, not to mention the toilet and sink were clogged. Staff started to argue among themselves as to who is going to clean the room. The nursing staff is not literate or skilled enough to see sick or rehab patients. I've asked questions about the care of my mother all the time and never got a correct answer. The so-called nursing supervisor was just as illiterate as those under their supervision. The building has no security. Mental patients sitting behind staffing desks, pretending to be staff. At one point a naked lady went into my mother's room and started digging in my mother's and roommate's belongings. The workflow at Villa Maria needs to be managed better. There was a time I wanted to call the cops, due to the staff's lack of knowledge of patient care. My family and I are still pondering about suing the facility. I know I'm supposed to rate Villa Maria, honestly, they deserve no STAR at all. read more

I was an inpatient of the ACUTE PHYSICAL REHAB section of this facility and this is the first review I've ever taken the time to write. Let me start off by saying that this place really did not look/or sound all too great judging from the reviews I'd read online looking at the pictures. And maybe it wasn't really the 'prettiest' place that I'd probably hoped for or expected to be transferred to (especially coming from a beautiful, upscale hospital such as Aventura Hospital) very soon after I'd lost my entire left leg in a car accident. After seeing the neighborhood it was located in and reading very conflicting & mixed reviews, I was very anxious and nervous about going there and was kind even prepared to refuse it all ty together and insist my case manager find another "more suitable" facility for me. When I did finally arrive there I was still hesitant and not fully convinced. HOWEVER...once the staff members started to come in I started to relax, get more comfortable. Everyone was so kind, patient, and pleasant. Most imp though, they were always very PROFESSIONAL. Not just the first day but actually continued through out my entire stay to the very VERY last night. They didnt just assist me with the physical rehab stuff part but also addressed all my medical needs while I was there. There were 2 nice drs, a psychologist, dietitian, nutritionist, gadtro team, transporters, etc all of who were very professional and highly skilled in whatever their area of specialty was. from anu/and probably all of the other medical issues one may be needing dieing their stay. They were available on a daily basis and the nurses and their assistants were there and fully attentive 24/7 and some of the girls (and fellas too) even temporarily became somewhat like friends to me. The girls who assist the nurses and take daily, routinual care of our basic needs and probably wind up spending the most time with the patients themselves helping them/or us to do ANY and EVERY SINGLE THING YOU COULD IMAGINE from getting dressed, washing up, help eating, bathing, making beds, bringing food, supplies, or just talking...(I think they might be referred to as cna's or pca's, I'm not sure) but these girls really were incredible prob were the best I'd ever seen anywhere. Especially the one who worked the day shift and probably spent the most time w me (her name was Marie Pierre from the Rehab side) was absolutely wonderful and really went on and beyond the call of duty. Although once again I'll say that almost every person there was fabulous, however she really dealt with a lot from myself as well as other patients and yet she always remained cheerful, optimistic and lost her smile. The food there was also very good, delicious actually. Everyday there was a menu with a variety of different foods or dishes that you could choose from. The kitchen staff, along w the dietitian, were all very accommodating as well. But prob my most favorite and impressive part of this place was their actual rehab center itself along with the entire physical and occupational therapy team and staff there. They were savage but they were kind and patient as well. At the end of each session I f er lt like I'd really made strides and accomplished something positive. I'd never seen such well trained, understanding and accommodating group of medical professionals anywhere. At the end of my 14 day admission I'd still had a lot of long, hard work ahead of me but I'd genuinely felt stronger, more confident and knew that I'd done well and came a long way in a short time. I was happy I'd come here and given this place a fair chance. I was happy to go home however I was sad to leave the people that had helped me and made me feel so comfortableand at home. **I actually did have one person that really did ruin this (what would've otherwise easily been a 5 star rating) ruined the whole experience and took it down a notch for me was the social worker lady whom is supposed to assist or foresee the patient with whatever their needs may be once they are discharged....who works along with the insurance company, case managers, transportation, skilled nursing centers e.t.c that is also supposed to arrange and make provisions for making sure you'll have whatever you'll be needing at home (supplies, equipment, skilled services like pt/ot/home nurse/etc) she was really not up to par and seemed to be pretty distracted and absent minded most everytime I had to speak or deal with her. Aside from this lady, I really was very impressed by everyone there and would have given them the entire 5 star rating.i definitely do would an do high recommend coming here tmand taking full advantage of their physical rehabilitation therapy.The service was honestly impeccable. My mother was sent to this "motel hell" with just a cough, she was denied her meds and was simply pumped up with large amounts of morphine, and left to die...my mother passed away a few days later due to lack of meds, compassion and true Catholic ideology... My mom has been at this nursing home for two weeks after a heap replacement surgery. She doesn't speak English nor French and it is difficult to find anybody that speaks Spanish in this facility. There's a clear problem with language barriers that are created between Spanish speaking patients and the nursing staff. Also it seems very difficult for me to understand that a Catholic place that is supposed to be leading in compassionate and kind treatment of elderly people, lacks specifically in these two concepts. Most of the stuff has been rude and very indifferent to the pain suffering of my mother. We had to chose this facility because the insurance didn't offer any better option, but it is a place that I would never recommend anybody to go to. There are of course very few exceptions to the rule, there are few nurses that have being kind and compassionate...but unfortunately I cannot say that this is the rule in this nursing home. As a Catholic, I feel ashamed that this place bears the name of our Lady Mary. read more

Dingy place, horrible food, never got my selections right on menu but the selections were horrible anyway. If they brought the wrong food you would have to wait 2 hours to get a replacement even for a simple cheese sandwich with tea. The bathroom grab bars are rusted and old. It never felt clean and the toilet had a horrible odor to the water in the toilet. Most of the time the staff was indifferent to your needs with a few exceptions. Not much pt and ot considering you are there full time! The doctor in charge saw you everyday for a few minutes and listened carefully to any concerns about your health, that was excellent of him. read more

Since Mom loves her Catholic religion we felt this would be a nice experience after falling and hurting herself. Don't make the mistake we did. Night staff was horrible, never answer phones and avoid work at all costs. Manager is kind but it was obvious they did not have enough staff in the evenings. Mom has glaucoma and needed her eye drops at exact time 3 times a day or her pressure would be in jeopardy. Didn't matter they didn't understand and I was constantly tired of arguing with them. Hearing other patients cry out for help was not satisfying to my soul. Mom's mind was 100% clear and when she told us of how she was left in the shower unsupervised and how the nurse pretend they left you in the cold shower for only "five minutes"...avoid this place. I did not wait for mom to be released instead I discharged her myself and signed all papers after just a week. Please do not use this place. read more
