If I was just rating this place based upon the crust, I'd have to give it FIVE stars. The crust is GREAT!!!! But the really bizarre thing is that everything else was not. It's weird because they got the hardest part done perfectly but screwed up everything else. The pizza reminds me to Vito & Nick's in the crust but V & N's is much better in every single other aspect. We ordered 2 pizzas. The first one was a family sized Sausage, Mushroom and Onion done well done. It looked fantastic. The mushrooms were good. But what struck me was something strange about the sausage. Usually sausage browns-up a bit, especially if you order it well-done. This did not, at least not the same way that PORK SAUSAGE does. (Pork is customary) The other thing is that it was VERY LIGHT ON SEASONING; I mean super-light, light they were making it for a senior citizens home. The Sausage was bland, bland, bland..... The first thing that I noted about the sausage was that it seemed to lack fennel, along with also seeming to lack garlic, basil, etc... but what it did seem to be loaded with was Oregano, basically an oregano bomb with little other flavor. Oh and the most noticeably absent thing was SALT... basically NO SALT... someone was asleep in the kitchen that day. They must have been because this had to have been an anomaly, since so many other people love the place. And the sauce, same thing, bland, bland, bland...... No garlic, no salt, no basil, etc... (I'm not a smoker, never have been... so I can taste seasoning) Now if that's not bad enough, it was EXTREMELY LIGHT ON CHEESE!!!! Imagine having a pizza where the cheese pulls/stretches unctuously upon cutting, making separating pieces a challenge....well this was NOT THAT PIZZA. This pizza, when cut, had a sheet of cheese that was paper thin, amazingly thin, hardly resembling cheese on a pizza. I was very blown away by this so I figured that I would order another pizza with a different topping to see how that would come out. (But I forget to ask for extra cheese on the 2nd one, big mistake) So the 2nd one was a Pepperoni. Since we all felt that the 1st pizza was flavorless, we decided to order DOUBLE PEPPERONI on the 2nd one with the hope of getting some flavor, and we requested for it to be well done. Usually pepperoni is put ON TOP OF THE CHEESE, and it gets a nice crispiness with the flavor getting enhanced when browned. Well, THAT is not what we got. They put the pepperoni beneath the cheese and it sucked. I was flabbergasted... what a joke!!! We had 3 people in our group. We also ordered fried mushroom. They were good... but the order only had 5 little mushrooms. It was the smallest order of fried mushrooms that I've ever seen. I feel like I somehow entered some sort of alternative reality or something!?!?! Twilight Zone??? Was a prank played on me? We were going to order a whole pizza but ordered slices to go because it would take 35 minutes to cook. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for the slices anyways! After hearing great reviews about this place, I was extremely disappointed. The pizza is mediocre at best. The sauce (or lack there of), pepperoni and sausage are average and the crust paper thin. In deepest Berwyn, Ill, where I was whelped, there were dozens of Dago Restaurants (as my Grandfather indelicately called them) and they all offered Pizza. Our family either had "Al's" (and why does it seem EVERY town has an 'Al's Pizza'?) or "Benny's". Not bad thin crust pizza. Not fabulous either. And for the record, I never encountered what is now known as a "Chicago Deep-Dish" Pizza until I was in my 30's. That phenomenon did not reach into the 'burbs at all, at least not in our 'hood. I lived in Central Berwyn, and the joints we went to were close. But there were legends. There were giants. There were colossal temples of Italian Pie close enough for mere mortals to worship at. Salernos' on 16th Street-a shithole of a tavern with glorious food. (find my Yelp here on "Salerno's On The Fox"-they've still got it down). Home Run Inn of 31st St just over the border into Chicago proper. A sense of danger, as it was always described to us as being a dodgy neighborhood, but sweet tonnato, what a pie!! And on the extreme south side of Berwyn, the place whose name was always spoken of in hushed tones. The King of them all, the undisputed champ. Villa Nova. Wouldn't you know, we never went there. No reason other than there were about 50 Pizza joints between our house and the south side of town. Like i said, you went to the one that was the closest. But the stories of Villa Nova's ambrosial crust, heavenly sauce, and generous toppings made your mouth come alive. Decor-wise, a shithole. The best pizza joints are. Whatever the optics lack, is made up for by the intoxicating aroma. It's quintessential. The kitchen is open and bustling. The folks working therein might not all be Italiano, but you'd never know by the loud banter. Place your order, it's written down on paper. None of this computer crap. Old School. And then you wait a good long time. No Domino/Pizza Hut conveyor oven horseshit to be found. Old school! I order Sausage/Fresh Garlic/Anchovy. Yeah, fucking Anchovy, 'cos I'm part Dago myself, and that's the way a serious son of Italy eats his pie--with ANCHOVIES. Oh sweet Christ, is this pizza good! Perfect! I sprinkle a little bit of crushed Red on it to zip it up, not that it NEEDS it, but 'cos I LIKE it. I dig deep-dish (Geno's if you need to know the truth), and Salerno's and Home Run Inn, but I gotta say Villa Nova has that tiny edge on them all. My wife is from Long Island, NY. and they do some SERIOUS pie there. She took me to her local "Vincents" in her home town, and we et there three days in a row. Fine, Fine Pie. DIFFERENT than Chicago 'za. How so? I can't put my finger on it, but suffice it to say I dug it to the max. Anywho, Wife Unit thinks Chicago Pizza has all the gustatory appeal of ceiling tiles, holding true to Vincent's, which IS actually superior to most pedestrian Chicago pie. But her eyes opened wide for Villa Nova. I can relate. This is superior Pie. Try the Anchovy! (One more thing--they have a style of pizza named after an old employee--I forget the guys name--you wont find this on the menu, but ask them. It's outasite!!) read more

These guys have the best pizza in the area, IMO. My best tip is to keep it basic, and don't waste your money with a lot of toppings. Sausage comes as a substantial delicious meatball in grid pattern, if you get too many other toppings, there's hardly room for them. Pepperoni is generous too, and placed under the cheese. You could get more toppings on here, olives or mushrooms, but it's so good on its own you hardly need them. I've ordered a couple dozen pizzas for delivery over 3 years in Berwyn and never had a bad one. Crust is consistently excellent, crispy but not burned. Delivery has been on point, seems like a family operation. Buffalo wings have been excellent, tried pasta and salads which were fine but not their specialty. read more

Villa nova pizza has really gone down the drain! New owner, staff that doesn't care anymore! Been ordering here for over 40 years. tonight will be my last time ever. My first pizza was delivered a half hour late and half of it was sitting in the corner of the box. i made the driver take it back. 2 hours later another pizza shows up. this one is enact, but the toppings are wrong. i call ask for manager. with attitude she answers I am!. i say hi I'm the guy who ordered 3 hours ago and just got my second pizza. the toppings are wrong. she flat out says I'm lying! and starts to argue with me. my final response was . With the attitude you have its obvious that a 40+ year customer has no value to you. I will take my business elsewhere. so 3 hours later 2 pizzas in the garbage I guess im getting McDonalds for dinner. Never had an issue until today. Food is always great, service horrible on this day. Ordered my pizza at 4:58 pm on a Thursday said would be an hour. Called an hour and a half later and they still have not even sent it out for delivery. 2 hours later called again and girl stated he was stuck by a train. Villa Nova... Good points: Tasty pizza. One downside, in terms of food: toppings slide off the thin crust, which does not happen on a properly prepared pizza.This, however, can be easily remedied. Not so easily remedied.... Bad points: 1. Unfriendly employees. Perfunctory at best. Shouldn't "Can I help you?" or "Have a good night" at least be accompanied by some semblance of a smile and a tone of voice indicating genuine good will? 2. Did I mention the unfriendly employees? Would it be possible to continue your conversation after greeting the customer? 3. How many times does a customer have to return before aforementioned employees recognize customer and refrain from asking for an ID? Far larger businesses do a better job of recognizing their customers. 4. Employees do not make customers feel welcome, nor do customers feel as if their business or loyalty is appreciated. In closing, the food here is not the problem. The main issue with Villa Nova is the unpleasant service. We used to recommend Villa Nova to friends, but due to this issue, that is no longer the case. read more

A pizza place's worth is on it's pizza and Villa Nova's is damn good. No frills just a quality thin crust with the option of double dough. A few choices for toppings and a tasty sauce make it good enough for a repeat as long as your not going out of your way. After dining at the place I would highly recommend get take out. There's about 15 people working the kitchen and they clearly don't fit and it's loud. The decor hasn't been updated since 1981 (note the Galaga arcade machine). Everybody I know says this is the best pizza they've ever had. I understand why! I was introduced to Villa Nova in 1987 while spending the night with my Grandparents... Wow.. Unsure as to how they do it! The pizza is out of this world. Everything I've gotten has been awesome over the 33 years that I've been coming here. Their pizza tastes like nothing you've ever had before. There is just nothing remotely like Villa Nova. They have 2 other locations. Lockport IL and would you believe this? New Buffalo Michigan! I currently live in California, and there is one Chicago pizzeria in my town with a thin crust somewhat similar to Villa Nova's.... And all it does it make me day dream of flying back to Chicago just to have villa nova sausage pizza again... with that sweet tomato sauce, crumbly sausage that makes me drool, and crispy crust that is ever so satisfying..... Ahhhh... I last ate here in June 2015, and it was such a happy day for me. Best pizza ever!!!!! You will not regret getting their sausage thin crust.... Try it if you haven't... 4.5-stars Villa Nova is a small, low-key neighborhood pizzeria with friendly staff and great food. Their sausage and mushroom pie, in particular, is very good. They don't skimp on the toppings here, and their sausage is remarkably tasty. They recently began offering a choice of fresh or canned mushrooms, but there is something about the taste of canned mushrooms that I really love, strange as that might sound. If there is one thing I might change to make their pies even better, it would be that I prefer sauce that is a bit sweeter. But other than that, I am a fan. The pizza reminds me of the Aurelio's pizzas I enjoyed years ago at the original Aurelio's restaurant. My favorite pizza! I use to live right next door to Villa Nova and it was my pizza place of choice. (and no I did not eat it every day!) I turned my husband (then boyfriend) on to it....city boy that he is...he LOVED & still LOVES Villa Nova. We have moved away but still not too far from Stickney and this is still our go to pizza joint. Everything is yummie....the sauce, the toppings and the crust is the perfect thick (or should I say thin?) ness. The last time we ordered I was even asked if we wanted fresh or canned mushrooms. Huh!
