We love John at Vails Gate Tire and Auto. They never do more work than needed and are fair with…read moretheir prices. John treats you like family. I was also very happy to see that when driving my car out they had put a seat protector so that nothing got on the seat. That's how it should be!

I had a very disappointing experience at Mavis Tire in New Windsor, NY, and I won't be returning…read more I made an 11:00 AM appointment on Friday, July 3 to repair a slow leak in my front right tire. A simple tire repair should not have taken 2 1/2 hours, yet that's exactly how long I was there. What I don't understand is why the technicians spent time opening my hood and inspecting mechanical components that had absolutely nothing to do with the reason I came in. I wasn't there for a vehicle inspection or maintenance--I was there to have a tire repaired. My tire should have been fixed promptly, especially since I had an appointment. To make matters worse, I was charged $43 to repair a tire with a nail in it. Most reputable tire shops charge around $20 for a standard plug-and-patch repair. The biggest disappointment came a week later when the tire started leaking again. I had to take my vehicle to another tire shop, where they repaired it correctly. While waiting, I also noticed that the customer experience left a lot to be desired. The restroom was dirty, the waiting room had uncomfortable chairs, and the television was broken, making an already lengthy wait even more unpleasant. So, after waiting 2 1/2 hours, paying what I consider an excessive price, sitting in an uncomfortable waiting room with a dirty restroom and broken TV, and then having to pay another shop to repair the same tire correctly, I have to ask: Why would I ever go back? Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this location.

This shop is either crooked or very incompetent. I was looking for a new mechanic for my vehicles…read morebecause my old mechanic retired. I live nearby and gave Star Quality a try. I took my car in because it was leaking oil and antifreeze. Most local mechanics I've used don't charge diagnostic fees as long as you're paying them to do the repairs. Star charged me a $120 diagnostic fee. If you're charging me $120 to tell me what's wrong, you better be right about the problem. I paid $1,312 for them to replace the valve cover and coolant housing. I got the car back and the oil leak was even worse. I brought my car back. They charged me a second $120 diagnostic fee, even though I already paid it the first time and they failed to correct the problem. I paid an additional $1,907 for them to replace the oil housing. This included a lot of the same labor that was done during the first service. That would've saved me an extra $120 diagnostic fee and several hours of work if they did the job correctly the first time. The service tech even admitted that the second mechanic paid more attention than the first mechanic. I got the car home and it's still leaking oil all over my driveway. I paid them $3200+ and the problem still isn't fixed. I'm not bringing it back to pay another $120 diagnostic fee and more labor charges. It should've been fixed right the first two times. I'll be finding another mechanic for my vehicles.

Red flags!!! Keep in mind I immediately took the car to another facility and they passed me…read more Took my auto, I just bought, to be inspected. I did tell them that I was new to the state, but didn't tell them I was mechanically inclined (wrench on my vehicles for two decades). Service manager informed me I failed the inspection, then told me to fix the issues, it would cost ~$400 through them, and really made it seem like I was not allowed to take the vehicle home because he had to report to DMV (or other govt entity) that they were safety issues. One was windshield wipers, tech explained to me they can leave streaks. I can hopefully upload video/photo of the wipers working just fine in their parking lot after failing me. The also stated dry rot on the tires. Not a chance. Also gave fact that tires have a shelf life of 5 years. Maybe 15-20 years ago. They were surprised I knew where and how to read the manufacture dates on the tires. Do your research, rubber tech has come a long way and lasts longer. Other inspection facility laughed when I told them this place stated tires had dry rot. They also gave a total BS explanation about the rear brakes having rust on the rotor, not allowing the pads to touch. Once I asked a ?, and displayed my auto knowledge, the service manager (think it was Ian or Ethan???) really had a look of being caught with his fingers in the cookie jar. To make matters worse, when I called to ask Wendy a couple questions of what they were looking for when I came back to retest (yes I wanted to go back, to also show them there was nothing wrong with what they were claiming), Wendy cut my ?s short stating she had no interest in retesting my vehicle. Not only illegal to deny a customer a test/retest, but the myriad of negative reviews really supports the saying of, "where'l there's smoke, there's likely to be fire". Tread carefully, and consider another place that is willing to explain and educate their clients. Not just take your money. Btw, Wendy was very open on the phone while I waited in the shop about her medical issues. Makes sense you reap what you sow. Best of luck with your brain and health Wendy. I hope you're able to turn things around.
