As for customer service, the front desk lady was very sweet, and very communicative. As for service, it was like 250$ for the EXAMINATION.... alone. I should of said no, but i said yes, they tell me it's a spark plug and fuel injector. now guess how much...... 2,500$. when i tell you my jaw was floored. i couldn't believe it. i picked up my car immediently and left. i don't want to push a narrative of like taking advantage of me, but they knew i was a young woman, made comments about asking if i should have my dad as the number..... but also like almost using scare tactics. "i wouldn't drive this car anymore than you have to", "you cannot drive this car home", "i would not let me daughter drive this car", asking if i was gonna tow it out the building.... by the way i drove all the way home 2.5 hours, no additional damage to the car, and my body shop charged me 250$ to fix spark plug and fuel injector. I have mixed review. In terms of professionalism, communication and friendly customer service they get a top rating. No issues there. in terms of their cost and approac, it seems that they are biased to separating me from my money. I'll elaborate... my car was showing a check engine ligh so I asked them to investigate. To do that they charged me $200. That is excessive since it only involves plugging in a scanner to read the codes... something that so auto parts stores offer to do for free! The scanner indicated that the MAF (Mass Air Flow) meter was not reading properly. They then told me that it would cost $1000 to repair! This despite the fact that I told them that a new MAF had recently been installed and so likely was not broke. So I declined to proceed. instead a friend hooked up his scanner and found that a pin in the electrical connector to the MAF was not making a proper contact. He replaced the pin, a 25 cent part and bingo the MAF started operating properly again and the check engine light stayed off. Total time to diagnose and repair... 45 minutes. I know that the mechanics at Village are very capable and could have found the same problem and repaired it for 1 hour's time. I'm disappointed that they instead set me up for a huge bill! Seems like a common approach nowadays... very sad/discouraging for us consumers! read more

Stunningly atrocious estimate from Village Auto. I had taken my car to a dealer for a recall who recommended additional services estimated at $3200-3500. Because I'm reluctant to trust I wanted to get a 2nd opinion. My mother has been a customer of V.A. for 20+ years and recommended them. They required me payment for their inspection, unwilling to even discuss potential price ranges for the services I was asking about. I was comparing basics like how much to install brake pads on the rear of Honda, CRV, year, model, etc. No range would be provided for costs until I paid for their inspection. Because my mom spoke so well of them I went ahead. Village Auto came back with 10 items total and 9 that were needing immediate attention and urgent safety concerns. The total estimated was $8800 and change, then additional cost if testing they were to perform in the estimate found more repairs needed. I took the estimate, pictures and the inspection report to a family member who is a recently retired mechanic I cannot quote his entire response. First hysterical laughter and "They think you're a fool and they are really trying to give it to you up the ***". Even I f all the items they listed truly needed to be repaired (he thought not) very few of them listed are even safety issues. Not only did they "find" many more issues that needed to be addressed, the prices that overlapped the estimate from the dealer were almost 2x as much. Needless to say the dealer looks pretty good at this point. Very disappointing that a long standing local business would operate in such a manner. I have had difficulties with a few car purchases and repairs in the past, I don't like to say it but as a middle aged, single woman I guess they figure they can say anything even nonsense and I'm going to just write a check no questions asked. read more

I scheduled an appointment to have basic suspension parts replaced. When I arrived, the person at the desk told me he's going to send me to their European shop. All I went in for was to have basic suspension parts replaced, something almost any shop can do. He then went on to tell me that my car's suspension is electronic. When I asked him what he meant by "electronic" he gave me a blurb and just said it's electronic. He referred to the car, a BMW 650i, as though it was too complicated to work on and went on the say that if it had been a BMW M3 it would be different (paraphrased.) In subsequent communication he talked about resetting the self-leveling system, I think to try to go above my level of understanding, but I'm not sure. I replied by telling him that the self-leveling is part of the hydraulics and that it doesn't have to be reset unless the hydraulic system needed repairs. I had the car diagnosed by a well-known European shop prior to this, and there was no call for any work on the hydraulic system. The guy was extremely patronizing. He knew what the car needed because I provided part of the diagnosis done by the European shop, yet he felt the need to ask me what the car was doing, how it felt, etc.. A good mechanic would know how the car felt by the information I had provided. What really made a big impression on me was that he thought he could "send" me to their European shop, as though he could make the decision on where I take my car. After this experience I wouldn't take any car there. And I'm not surprised to see so many bad reviews. Avoid this shop! read more

Bunch of crooks was trying to find someone closer then the dealer I normally go to. Took suv in for awd service and brake flush. They tried saying it was leaking brake fluid and needed new calipers and rotors for a total of $1800. I had just had a brake inspection at the dealer when the oil was changed and they had found no problems they just recommended the fluid change so went to these crooks never again. I brought my car in for a full synthetic oil change. They didn't change the oil, they only added to it. That explains why it wasn't running like it usually does. I didn't realize the problem until I was due for my next oil change and my friend did it. There was almost 6 quarts of oil that was drained and many pieces of metal in the oil and other debris .Then, they told me that I need new brakes and it's a safety concern. There's nothing wrong with my brakes. I paid a lot of money to have them change my oil, only to find out that they didn't change it. I definitely won't go back to Village Auto Works and I'll make sure to tell others to not waste their money or time taking their vehicle there. read more

The shop is clean and well kept and they generally seem professional. In order to talk with someone and show them my classic 60s car I had to wait a week and then they said they couldn't work on it but were OK with working on a classic Corvette and wouldn't say why. They referred me to another shop that was mediocre. I've know about this place for years but my cars have always been under warranty or German imports so I doubt I'll be back. read more

I had an appointment at 10:00 am and I waited in the waiting room while they took it in. 1 hour passed and it was still on the rack, I asked why it was taking so long, the manager said it takes an hour. 20 minutes later it was still on the rack, I told them to take it down and I was leaving, they said we are waiting on an oil filter. they could have told me they did not have an oil filter and it would be a while instead of keeping it a secret. Two days later, I took my car straight to Toyota as I couldn't believe my steering wheel shaking had anything to do with my rear brakes going bad. Toyota dealership told me my rear brakes are worn but the front brake rotors and pads will need changing as that's what's causing the shaking. They charged me $1200 and I gladly paid for it. Village auto told me my shaking issue was my rear brakes and they freakin charged me $1700 for just the rear! What a ripoff. I didn't even get the service and the had the balls to tell me it's best to do it as they already have the wheels off. God dam am I pissed off just writing about this! read more

Takes advantage of inexperienced customers, WAY overpriced, recommends MANY services you don't need. One of my kids took his car here for an oil change. They tried to sell him on $2000 of repairs on a car he bought for $3500. I took it to my mechanic. Total bill was $215 dollars. Of the 9 services Village recommended, they recommended 4. If I had done those four services at Village it would have been almost $600. Again, the total at my mechanic was $215. One last thing...they were SUPER friendly to my son UNTIL he said he was going to call and check in with me. Then they got snippy and impatient. read more

If you go here, ask that the older gentlemen mechanic not work on your car. He mis-diagnosed a front end suspension problem I was having and recommended I get upper ball joints replaced. I took off the wheels and found the real problem myself which was the lower ball joint. It was spewing grease out and was pretty obvious. It was like he didn't even look while performing the $82.00 diagnostic test. Very disappointed to find this after taking the upper control arm and strut off myself. They refunded the charge however. A very frustrating experience with Village Auto. I received a call from Andy outlining all the services I needed on my 2014 Cruze after my brother topped off the radiator with coolant drove it in after the warning light said "Coolant Low" and "Engine Hot.) Andy suggested $2800 worth of services. He very politely and in detail explained all of the suggested services to me over the phone ( I am now in NC.) These are the items he outlined; Multipoint Safety Inspection, Replace Thermostat, Cooling System Service, Oil leak inspection/repair, Install Front Brake Pads, Rotors, Front Brake Caliper Service, Oil Change, Engine Oil Flush. I said thank you and that I would review it with my brother and my spouse. I agree with the reviewer who said Village Auto takes advantage of inexperienced and trusting car owners. Unfortunately my inexperienced and very trusting brother has taken his 2001 Ranger there for years. I wonder how many times he paid for services he did not need. Here's end of story: I took Cruze via tow to Budget Auto in New Brighton for a second opinion. Andy suggested towing..... Tow was $155 ( I bet Andy gets a cut.) Diagnosis by Budget: Coolant leak at waterpipe outlet. Brakes 80-90% (looked relatively new), oil change not necessary, little sweat marks of oil (no big deal.) Cost for Coolant Part and Labor $440. BTW Andy called my sister and yelled at her to "get the car out of my lot immediately." Andy has a huge parking area in the back. I am sure having it sit there for another day was not going to inconvenience him. Do NOT patronize Village Auto. I hope I can save someone a $1000 or more on unnecessary repairs/service. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. Giving village auto 1 star is a compliment I sincerely feel they don't deserve. And I am warning others to NEVER EVER take your car here. They are crooks who will try to hose you for as much money as they can. We took our '95 escort here to have them simply install a belt, a belt WE provided. We just wanted them to put it on and that's all. They claimed they tried installing the belt but took it off again because our alternator was seized, oh and by the way you also need a new water pump. So it's going to cost $1500 to repair. WHAT?!! They also tried to convince us that investing $1500 dollars into an 18 year old car was a good idea. Dude, the car isn't even WORTH $1500!! 1. We refused to pay that much money. We took our car to our mechanic back home, who actually installed the belt (charged us $50 for his time) and told us our alternator in fact was NOT seized and our water pump is fine. Hmm which is a better deal? $50 or $1500? I think I'll stick with $50. 2. Village auto charged us $90 to not do what we told them to do. We wanted the belt put on, which they didn't do and still had the audacity to charge us $90. 3. We are pretty certain they never even tried to put the belt on. The belt was still in its original packaging with no signs of dirt, grease, or anything which would definitely be there if their claims were true of installing the belt, running the car, and taking it off again. 3. When we went back to get our money back, they denied that they'd done anything wrong. Even when we had a second opinion from another mechanic that nothing was wrong with our car! They then gave us half our money back as a "good will gesture". So I guess thanks Village Auto for stealing $45 from us. We'll never make this mistake again. And I sincerely hope you stop trying to swindle thousands of dollars from people who have nothing wrong with their vehicles! read more

I took my daughters Honda CRV in to have the stolen catalytic converter replaced. It was covered by insurance. I have had to bring the car back three times to get a hissing noise addressed. The first time it was a gasket that was not properly replaced. When I brought it back the second time and left for the day they advised me that it was a gasket issue again and would be covered. Even though they had the car for most of the day they told me they could not get the part and I should bring it back on a Monday. When I asked why this is taking so long to fix , I was told it is really the exhaust manifold gasket and they are trying to do me a favor as that would be $1,600 to fix. I left confused as the story keeps changing. I returned on Monday to drop the car off. When I picked the car up they told me the problem was mostly fixed but there is a slight leak from the muffler and that would be $840 to fix. Picked up the car and drove it and still the same noise. The oil change I requested was not completed either. I have no confidence that this shop knows what they are doing And is honest and ethical. In addition, my daughter felt very uncomfortable when she went to pick up her car originally based on how they treated her. read more

I've had nothing but great experiences here. They've serviced two of my cars, an 04 Saturn ion and an 09 Buick Lucerne. I am always super nervous finding a new auto shop because you never know who's going to be trustworthy or not but this place is super down to earth. They've never made me feel dumb about any questions I've had about my car or repairs on my car. I own a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze that was having trouble cold starting. I took my car to a Chevrolet dealership first thinking it may be a recall issue. They charged me $300 dollars to change the battery which didn't fix the problem. When I took it back, they told me it would be another $300 to change the ambient air temp sensor. I didn't trust them again since they already charged me for an unnecessary service, SO I TOOK MY CAR TO VILLAGE AUTOWORKS. I told them about all of the issues I had at Chevrolet and what their diagnosis was. They told me what the price range would be for the diagnosis and explained what would be required for a lower vs higher charge for the diagnosis. They also asked to hold the car overnight, so that they could see/experience the cold start problem for proper diagnosis. They gave me a free loaner car and were super friendly. They called me promptly the next morning to say it was a good thing I brought it to them because my ambient air temp sensor is fine, but my engine coolant sensor is off. They explained how this effects the car and why it isn't starting properly and told me exactly how much it would cost to fix. They fixed my car by the end of the day and were extremely helpful and professional. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a high quality service experience! read more

Pushy, WAY OVER PRICED, possibly dishonest. I had to have my vehicle towed within a two mile radius of where it died. Village Auto & Transmission was the closest spot. There was a $139 fee for even letting the car into their shop (disguised as an "initial inspection fee") - then they had no idea what was wrong with it so they asked permission to take it apart to find out (DUH. I need my car to work, so I guess we'll go with that). The fee for taking my vehicle apart was just shy of $500, without doing any work to fix it yet. Then they crunched the numbers and the projected cost of fixing my transmission was $4,800! I asked another mechanic, explaining what was wrong and he literally LAUGHED. He said they were taking me for all I've got. New mechanic guy said he could do it for just over $1000 including parts and labor. This is where it gets good. Then I go to the shop to tell them that I won't be having it repaired there and the salesman scrambles a bit and offers to do it for $2500, I say no and he curtly informed me that there would be some fee's for putting the vehicle back together. Long story short - even after talking with the manager (who actually was a pretty reasonable guy), I had to pay a $1000 ransom to get my vehicle out of their shop (thats total including the previous costs I mentioned). $1000 is the most expensive diagnosis (and I personally think inaccurate diagnosis) of a vehicle I've EVER HEARD OF. Let's skip to the fun part. I took my car back to them after a unsatisfactory service experience. They agreed to look at it, and promptly drove it into their own garage door. They smashed my windshield, tore up my roof, and generally put a big hurt on my nice car. 10 days later, I got my car back from the body shop, partially fixed. The Village Auto owner doesn't return my calls, and his crew didn't even fix the original issues that I'd come to resolve. And they think I'm a jerk for being unhappy! Looks like court to get the rest of the damage fixed and maybe that overdue apology from the owner. The list of minor things they did wrong on top of smashing my car and being indifferent is too long to type. But I'm convinced this is no fluke. The guy running the place seems to be looking out for his pocket first. As a customer, you will feel like necessary inconvenience to the process of harvesting of consumer dollars. Avoid like the Ebola virus. But then again, it has a 10% survival rate.. This outfit is so far into negative star range, it is massive black hole territory. PS. Of the two loaner cars I endured, one doesn't have functioning door locks, the other smells like a family of mice died under the seat, the horn won't blow, the check engine light is stuck on and its suspension sounds like a Conestoga wagon at the end of the Oregon Trail. I brought my car back for warranty work on a part. An independent shop verified that the part in question was of questionable quality and on its way out. I made an appointment and dropped my car off at 2PM. I was notified 3.5hrs later that they were going to replace the part, but it wouldn't arrive until that Friday. Friday came and I received no update. No call was received the following Tuesday so I called that Wednesday only to find out that they had received two wrong parts. Tuesday of week three, I called for another update. I was told they were waiting on a 3rd part and that someone would call me back in 30mins. I did not get any such follow up call. I called the following morning and miraculously was told my car was ready. Fast forward to Wednesday afternoon. As I am picking up my car I enquired as to whether they used an oem or after market part. A gentleman behind the desk sighs (annoyed) and turned around in his chair. He proceeds to mansplain to me that whoever said my axle shaft needed replacing was wrong. I was stuck with a crappy rental for 3 weeks and no customer service, but I "got to put mileage on their car instead of my own." He also made it clear he was annoyed that he is now sitting on 3 axle shafts. They don't want to admit they used a garbage part or admit fault. I'm very angry with how this place treated me and how I was talked down to. Seriously, since when did a customer have to make it their job to follow up with work being done on their car?? I will never use this shop again. read more
