This review is long overdue. This happened a few years ago so hopefully johns service has gotten better but I know I will never ever recommend them nor ever use their services again. When my car broke down and needed to be towed here, after a period of time John himself rudely told me my engine was fried and condescendingly told me I must not maintenance my car and that I never get my oil changed. The audacity of this man to take advantage of me (a young lady who maybe looks the type to not take care of her cars) like this was absolutely ridiculous. I maintain my cars meticulously and actually had just recently had my oil changed. He didn't believe me. I've been patronizing Lowry Auto for almost 15 years. Even after moving to a neighboring city I'll bring in my vehicle because I trust them. Ex: Last Fall we tried a place closer to our home which was a chain that rhymes with "Ray Run Ronest Rauto" and was the opposite of what's advertised. I called Lowry and told them what they diagnosed amd the quote retrieved my car which they fixed and were polite about (A) the fact they recognized it was a rip off and (B) that I was stepping out with another mechanic. If I could give a less than zero star, I would. I've called to many different auto mechanic shops before and they've all given me a ball park estimate on things that I told them over the phone. John continued to cut me off on the phone when I explained to him what I needed and wanted in my vehicle. Zero tolerance for women, zero customer service, and didn't even consider what I was looking for. He kept insisting I come in when all I wanted was 5 mins for him to input my vehicle info in the system like all other shops and give me an estimate of replacement for my rear shocks. This is the finest version of cheap sales men. First time impression was terrible and I will never give my business to them. read more

UPDATE SINCE REVIEW: It didn't take long before John called me. At first he was a bit authoritative but quickly apologized for my recent bad experience. He assured me this mistake was made by a recent employee that they have since let go for his poor service. He apologized again and asked how he could earn my trust. He offered to refund my brakes if I could provide the used brakes (I tossed the old at the last change) but seemed genuinely sorry. He asked that I remove my poor post but I sadly do not believe that helps the CAUSE FOR THIS SITE. However, his actions and his follow-up rendered my efforts worthy to do the same for him and update another review for our most recent interaction. read more

Fantastic service! I had done some work on my vehicle and asked them to run a diagnostic to let me know what else needed to be fixed. They did exactly what I asked for, let me know what needed to be replaced, and never tried selling me on work I didn't need. They even offered to relearn the sensor after I replaced it. This was a while back but I brought a 94 cadillac there for service. They had to take intake manifold off so they drained coolant to do that. When I went to pick up my car it was literally started and overheating in there parking lot. They forgot to add coolant. Long story short ever since that happened the car would keep losing coolant internally. They blew the head gasket and didn't offer to pay for anything. They basically said it was just a coincidence. We recently bought a low mileage, well maintained, one owner Pontiac from some good friends of ours. We had given it to our son who is a grad student who lives in NE Mpls. We live about 45 minutes away. This morning I got a wake up phone call from our son. The car had died on him while driving it near his home and he had no clue what was wrong. It was DEAD. I know enough about cars to keep from getting scammed if I need help, but my son is a great musician, not a mechanic. I looked on Yelp to find a nearby shop to get some help for him. I saw that this shop was close and after reading the other review I decided to call. After giving him all the info he would need for the service call I headed out to meet with them expecting something just short of the worst. After 30 minutes my son called again. Loose battery cables! We only had to pay for the service call. Whoever put the new battery in, apparently didn't tighten them enough. This was the perfect situation for any, other than honest, auto shop to make a few easy bucks. There are auto clubs and insurance plans of all types that make their living from people from people who wouldn't have a clue what to do in a spot like this. I called and talked to John on the phone about a camshaft sensor replacement. He incorrectly heard crankshaft sensor even though I specifically said camshaft and then he yelled at me for telling him the wrong part. He was incredibly rude over the phone. I will not go here based on the way I was treated in the initial call. Highly recommend going somewhere else, where they can have a phone conversation and be polite. read more

Good service when your car needs help! I've been getting vehicles repaired at John's for around 8 years, sporadically for the first two years and exclusively for the last five years. These guys are fantastic and I really can't say enough good things about them! They do a great job with repairs & rebuilds, they're fast, the prices are fair, and they're honest. The people here are very rude. I'm in a wheelchair and couldn't get out the car so I asked for the guy to come over to get a quote for a tune up. He walked off and said you can't get out the car your pathetic. That was very rude for someone trying to get services for the first time. I've taken my car into Lowry Repair a few times and always had positive experiences. Each time they have provided high quality service by diagnosing the exact problem then fixing it quickly and affordably. They go above and beyond by quoting a variety of prices and providing some choices to the customer. For example, they once called around to find a used part rather than the simple route of just ordering up a new and expensive one. Most important, they have an philosophy of not overselling or upcharging. To paraphrase John: "We are here to fix your car, not sell you stuff you don't need." I can absolutely attest to this fact because just today, they provided me a quick and inexpensive fix for something that I was convinced would be just the opposite. I can't recommend their business enough. Although I hope the car runs forever and doesn't need anything, if it does, I will be back. read more

I needed a ball joint. Got a quote from a different mechanic that seemed too high. I thought I would check out John's place. Jeff, John's son, gave me two estimates, with different quality parts. Even with the more expensive, American-made part, they were $150 cheaper. They took me over and showed me what the problem was, and got to work once I gave them the go-ahead. I sat with John and had some coffee while his son fixed me up. Once thing that struck me was that John knew almost every customer by name. Pretty cool. These guys are the real deal. read more

I took my car here for a quick oil change because it was the closest repair shop to me with the highest Yelp ratings. My car hasn't had a tune up in quite some time and usually when mechanics explain things to me they go in one ear and out the other. The guys working here picked up on this and actually took me over to my car and showed me the issues with the links and belts...I appreciated the extra effort to help me understand my own vehicle... No other shop has taken the time to do this for me. They put the potential repair costs on my invoice for me to consider, in addition to the oil change charges. There was also a strange rattling sound coming from the heat shield on the catalytic converter...they fixed this free of charge on the spot. They were a real help. read more

These guys are an old school mechanic shop that does great work! I have been twice now, once to replace a clutch and now for a wheel bearing repair. They take the time to explain everything to you and there prices are fair (I always call around and compare). They also have free loaner cars! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this since I am super busy and used to put off repairs because I didn't have time to sit around waiting at a mechanic's all day! At Johns Lowry Repair Center, I just drop it off and go on my way. They call to check in with what they've found and get down to business. I had no idea where to take my car for repairs. After some Google searching, I found John's Lowry Repair and saw all the really good reviews, plus the fact that they've been around forever and are locally owned. I called and made an appointment to drop my car off. They were able to get me in within the next few days. I needed my blinkers fixed and brakes checked. Repairs were complete by the end of the day and John explained what was done very thoroughly. I feel they did a great job and were very honest about it as well. I went to Lowry's about a month ago for the first time, after moving here from out of state. The most positive part of the visit was the younger man who did my oil change and checked other fluids. He was very cordial and polite, and knew what he was doing on my 13-year-old Honda. I was very happy with him. But a couple of things weren't to my liking. First, I'm used to a small waiting area and a regular chair to sit in. Their "waiting area" consists of a few bar stools on the edge of (but still in) the repair bays. They do have 2 or 3 loaner cars--first come, first served-- but I had no errands and it made no sense to take one for just a half hour. The second thing that just seemed plain rude and bad business, especially because I was a first-timer, was that the owner made me pay an extra 3% because I was using a credit card. I had no checks or debit card with me. If a sign was clearly posted and/or he had said something like, "Next time, if you could pay by check or debit card, it would really help my bottom line..." I'd have understood and thought differently about him. As it stands now, I don't have any plans to return. read more

I've lived in Minneapolis for about a year and have been driving out to Eagan to my old car place every time I needed work done, just because I didn't know where to go near my house. I found these guys on Yelp and decided to give it a try for an oil change. The service was great, and they were very friendly. A couple weeks later, my car completely broke down, so I had it towed to Lowry Repair Center. They fixed it within an hour and the cost was completely reasonable. Once again, I'm driving home happy. John and Jeff take excellent care of all our family cars. I have over 117,000 miles on my 2002 Saturn and it still runs like a champ thanks to these guys. Ladies, this is THE place to go. They will explain and show you what's wrong, give you choices of new or used parts if they can, show you the old parts they replace and make recommendations of what to keep an eye on for later. Jeff even showed me how to turn off the "needs oil change" light that the other place didn't reset after they did the oil change. For the last time. One-stop shopping for all my car needs: oil changes, new tires, new brakes. No more being taken advantage of at T*res Plus, J*ffy Lube, or M*das for me. No savings to be had at those places where they try to sell me new tires to replace my current year-old tires, no trying to scare me into buying a new battery to replace my almost-two year old battery, no more oil all over my engine that will take a day to clean off. Great service: John or Jeff call me first thing in the morning with the estimate for the work, if they encounter something else that needs repairing, I'm called so I can okay it, and my car is good to go when promised. The owner was not forthcoming with the diagnostic cost of my car. I thought I was going to be charged a $100 fee to look at the issues, but only found out at the end of the experience that I owed two diagnostic fees, so $100 more than I expected. He didn't inform me of this at any point of my experience. Jeff, one of the mechanics, was professional and friendly, but John was gruff and patronizing, and didn't take responsibility for not being entirely honest about what I was going to pay. read more

BE AWARE! They told me I needed my brake pads and rotors replaced last week when I had an oil change and tire rotation done. I am in between jobs right now and this really stressed me out. Luckily my BF friend is a mechanic and offered to do the job as long as I paid for the parts he needed to order:) Well last night once he had my car on the lift and my tires off he told me he was going to send those parts back and return my $$$ because my brakes are just fine- NOT EVEN CLOSE TO HALF LIFE!!! read more

When it comes to auto repair, I trust no one...until now. That is why I waited 6 months to have someone check why my oil light was on, even though my car had oil. So I did a little homework, figured out what questions to ask so I wouldn't come across as totally naive, made an appointment with Lowry and geared up to make sure I wasn't ripped off. John and Jeff passed the test! They brought me under the car, showed me the oil pressure gauge and explained how it worked with analogies I could understand. That's all I needed! While waiting for new gauge they cleaned up my battery cables for a mere $20.00 bringing parts and labor to $162.00. Totally reasonable. John and Jeff were so friendly, were NOT condescending --like other male mechanics at other businesses. I will go back for all things automotive! Horrible customer service after several years of taking my car here and gaining my trust. I went to move my car after a snow emergency and it would not start. AAA came within 15 minutes to try to jump me (great service!) and determined I had a different problem. I called Lowry to let them know I was having it towed and I was treated like complete garbage. Long story, but I needed service quick as I have a young child who still needs a car seat. I remembered my friend saying how much she liked her garage (St. Anthony Mobile), so I called and was immediately won over by the friendliness and respect I was treated with.
