This bakery is absolutely unreal. My first visit was around thanksgiving, so I got to sample three of their pies in addition to my pastries, and everything blew me away! It was impossible to decide which pastry to get, so I asked what their "signature" items were and was guided to the chocolate kouign amann. It was sweet, flaky, and chocolatey - such a treat! My friend went the savory route after they set out a tray of fresh croque monsieur that left us drooling and that was perfection as well. I have tried the almond croissant, pretzel croissant, regular croissant, Kouign Amann, Demi baguette, and almond cookies. Also got chocolate cookies and carrot cake for my friends. Everything we received were huge. Rough estimate is that it's double the size of other bakeries. My favorite was the pretzel croissant. It taste exactly like a pretzel. The coarse salt really makes the dough shine. Then right after is the croissant. It's flaky and the buttery. The almond croissants were beautiful but the almond extract was overwhelming. Not sure if I got a bad batch but it was very strong that day. Least favorite was the Kouign Amann. For some reason, it's very inconsistent and not as sweet as I would like it to be. Usually you get caramelization from the sugar but here, it just taste like a croissant without layers. The raspberry one tasted better than the chocolate but not by much since even those weren't sweet. Good dark chocolate but without any sweetness from the dough, it wasn't balance for me. The almond cookies were sweet, crispy, and buttery. No almond extract tasted. Almost like a thin buttery biscotti with almond slivers. It was pretty addicting and I almost ate the entire bag in one sitting. The packaging and presentation in the box was neat and beautiful. Love, love, LOVE their croissants! My favorites are the plain, pain au chocolate, spinach and feta, and the cheddar bacon jalapeño. Huge, flaky, and fresh, and they can heat them up upon request for you as well. Their coffee is no joke, either! Their lattes are great, but the real gold is found in their hot black coffee, which is one of the only black coffees I have been able to drink and enjoy. The staff have been friendly every time I've visited, the owner (I presume) has personally attended to customers a number of times when I've been in the bakery, and when I once brought my friend's 3-year-old twins to grab some croissants with me, they gave them some free chocolate chop cookies. While my go-to items are their coffee and croissants, their pies have been delicious, too, and everything in the case is always so very tempting. read more

My family loves this bakery we go there often. I ordered a slice of carrot cake last weekend and it tasted very odd. It wasn't sweet at all and it just overall lacked flavor. The frosting didn't taste like their typical cream cheese frosting. I'm not sure what happened this time I was disappointed. I've enjoyed the food and drinks here in the past, and I really try to support local businesses whenever I can. But the customer service during my visit today at 7:30 AM was disappointing. The small blonde woman with short hair working the counter greeted the customer ahead of me with warmth, but when it was my turn her tone completely shifted. She was condescending, impatient, and dismissive throughout the interaction. When I asked for a simple recommendation about croissants, she responded with unnecessary attitude. I decided to leave without completing my order. I went to Starbucks instead, where I was treated kindly and got exactly what I needed. On my walk home, I passed the café and saw the same employee laughing and engaging warmly with other customers, which made the contrast in how I was treated even more noticeable. An amazing way to start the day with the smell of fresh bread and coffee as you walk in to the store! Then being greeted by so many amazing options in front of your eyes?! How could I pick just one?! Since the line was moving fast my decision had to be made soon! My decision ended up being a chai tea latte with an espresso shot and a almond croissant. So great, what can you say but love it. Haven't tried their sandwiches but I can't imagine how you would go wrong. We visited one morning where they incidentally made a double batch of creme brulee and as a result were selling them for just over $1. Excited to get the chocolate almond croissant because it's usually one of my favorites and my daughter wanted a chocolate muffin so she went with the chocolate croissant muffin. My almond chocolate croissant was so hard you could knock on it and see my picture I posted to see what it looks like once you tear the thing apart... Not only is it dry in the middle but it's almost a joke it was so awful and I hate to be so mean in a review but it's the honest truth! The croissant muffin chocolate thing is also right up there with being super awful but not as awful as the almond chocolate croissant. I also got an iced latte which was average at most. And this cost me over $16. I tipped them in addition....And that's why this place is getting two stars instead of one because the young girl and the young guy working there we're both very nice but the look of these pastries are extremely deceiving! Ahhhh honestly, this place is super cute but it fell short of my expectations. :( I actually happened by here by chance bc the typical bake shop I like to go to for a quick breakfast was closed. I picked up: + 2 cheddar bacon jalapeño croissants + 3 chocolate croissants + 1 spinach feta croissant I took everything to go for a double date at the Dallas Arboretum. I probably had my spinach feta croissant like 30-45 mins later, and just... idk if it was bc of the wait, but it was kind of gross to be honest. The feta and spinach aren't really mixed together. It's roughly chopped feta and mushy spinach. The spinach had areas that were crisp, and then other parts that were soggy. The spinach and feta were also pretty clearly segregated, but I feel like if the feta had been diced more finely and better mixed with the spinach, it wouldn't be so... one mouthful salty feta, one mouthful bland-soggy-spinach. The chocolate croissant wasn't anything to write home about. Was your typical croissant with a line of chocolate. The saving grace were the cheddar bacon and jalapeño croissants. Boulangerie by Village Baking has really bougie, delicious, buttery French pastries - I tried an excellent chocolate almond croissant (why don't more places make croissants that are BOTH chocolate and almond?), and a croissant made in a muffin tin (can't remember what it's called, but that's what it looked like). I also had a piece of veggie quiche, which was delicious; I was eating at the handful of tables outside, and they heated it up for me. 3 stars because the prices are a bit silly: $5 or $6 for a relatively small pastry or thin piece of quiche. I get that delicious and labor intensive things are worth paying for, but it still seems a bit pricey. There's only half and half on the counter to put in your coffee, but I didn't ask if they have other milk options. Pandemic warning: during winter 2021, not a mask in site (on employees or patrons), and no sign about whether masks or vaccines are recommended. read more

My mouth watered every time I saw a picture of their French pastries so it was high time I visited Boulangerie by Village Baking Co. on lower Greenville in Dallas.  Buttery, flaky pastries greet you as you enter, making it almost impossible to resist!  It was near lunch time so I decided to try one of their sandwiches before I indulged in a pastry.  I had a traditional ham and cheese while my friend selected the grilled cheese with mushrooms and each sandwich was delicious in its own right.  I skipped the chips to make sure I had room for dessert.  I mean, that WAS why I was there!  And the pastry that I saved my calories for?  The Chocolate Kouign Amann.  It was a taste bud's dream.  Wonderfully crusty outside and rich chocolate inside.  The only thing that could have possibly made it better, would have been to have it heated slightly. My only complaint was that when I asked for a tea refill, I was struck by the fact that I was told they were a bakery, not a restaurant, and refills were not free.  But even with this slight hiccup, I would go here for a morning treat and coffee.   Or maybe a sandwich to go.  That baguette was delicious. The exterior is rather non descript and there aren't many tables for dining in.  In my opinion,  Boulangerie by Village Baking Co. is more of a neighborhood bakery rather than a destination.  BUT, my tastebuds were overwhelmed with goodness, so I'll definitely go again.  The Laminated Brioche is calling my name! I'm still dreaming of their deliciously flaky and layered kougin amanns. Personal bet: You won't be able to buy just one pastry. When you search "bakery" in Dallas yelp, Boulangerie is highly touted. And rightly so! They're located in Lower Greenville super close to the Trader Joe's. I was able to snag street parking for free on a Saturday morning, but you could always just get parking lot space and walk on over. They have strong wifi and a great little setup with limited seats/tables. The only drawback I can find is that the space is too narrow for large parties, so most people just enjoy a light snack then leave...with their box of goods. They also serve hot and cold beverages. Their specials are chai right now, and they offer other milks like oat and almond. They also have sandwiches like caprese and other meat options, but the pastries are what I went in for. Their cranberry orange scone is delicious. That is my favorite scone combo. Their chocolate kougin amann is better than the raspberry flavor in my opinion, but both are great. Their pastries hold overnight, but I put mine in the fridge just in case. They were great the new morning after a quick bake heatup. Service was so wonderful and friendly. The solo lady working the cashier was helping a customer, and there was a line that was starting to form when I was up next. The kind man who was in the back jumped forward to help me out and was so helpful. Would highly recommend some baked goods here or if you're walking around Lower Greenville and need a bite to rest your legs. read more

Wow, as a neighbor in the community I want to like and support this business but there are two pressing issues that keep reoccurring at each visit. 1) the warm food and pastry items are consistently cold and are not heated properly 2) the staff is rude . At my last occurrence I asked them to reheat the $5 quiche slice I bought and was told they couldn't do that since I already bit into it. After I said that was unacceptable the worker rudely said she could heat up a new slice for me and basically threw it at me once she was done and ran off. The new slice was also half the size of the first but I can't say that wasn't unexpected. This bums me out to say this, but I don't think we will be returning. My first review compared Village Baking to what was out there when they first started. However, the bread scene in Dallas has evolved a lot, (we even have a respectable bagel game these days!). We bought a baguette here yesterday afternoon for a nice picnic. I can honestly say the flavor, crust, and middle were comparable to a grocery store bakery, ie not good. To put it simply, it was NOT a baguette, there was no air bubbles, no crackling crust... It was pale and tasted like a Tom Thumb french bread my parents would buy in the 90s. My updated goto bakers these days are: Oak Cliff Bread (Farmer's Market and online orders) Kuluntu Bakery (online only, but sometimes they pop up at La Bodega) Commissary (Downtown, good sourdough everyday without fail) Village Bakery still does some things well, but I won't be buying bread here again. If you appreciate the art of French pastries you have to check this place out. I snagged several items including the croissants which were divine. Also a loaf of sourdough which was good! Let me start by saying the pastries and food are amazing . Croissants are delicious, flaky, soft, melts in your mouth. Sandwiches are very tasty. I would give the food 10 stars of I could. The rating goes down to 3 stars because of the service. The staff is very friendly, but their operations are pretty bad. It's super slow - there's no rhyme or reason as to how they do things. One day, the same person might be taking your order, making your coffee, and taking your payment. Other days there might be one person taking orders, another person making the coffee, and another taking your payment. Some days even they are confused on who's doing what and orders get lost or out of order. That's part of the reason why there's always a line out the door - both because their food is amazing but service is slow. read more

I would have given 5 stars, but REALLY disappointed in their manager. I am unsure why I'm just leaving a review for this place, because when my husband and I lived in Fort Worth, we would drive down, get a ton of pastries and go home. Now we visit on our way to Houston. I should have reviewed a long time ago, because they truly have delicious pastries. Before we drove to Houston last week, we ordered about $45 worth of pastries and had a latte and cappuccino. I am not sure if the girl was new or not, but it was the worst coffee we have had and we both drink a whole lot of coffee. There was a mishap with our coffee before with a newer person, but then I asked a lady who I know worked there for awhile to remake it and it was so much better. I don't think I will waste money on coffee here again. Their coffee is subpar. When I taste their coffee, I always think they should get rid of it and only make AMAZING pastries, breads and desserts. Either way I called and sent an email stating that The coffee was really bad and if they can refund it, or I would have taken a credit for the next time we were in, because we will definitely be back. So that is my only issue. Their customer service if contacting me. Not sure if they thought I was being dishonest??? But we threw the coffee away at Bucees in Madisonville. Oh and I mentioned that the raspberry, vanilla and chocolate kouign amaan were pretty burnt that day. (Which is what we always come for), but didn't get Bc I didn't want them to be dry. Being a Francophile, walking in here made me almost WEEP for my days of flying to France every year, before this stupid fucking pandemic. As for VBC, their kouign amann is an insult to kouign amann (rubbery/tough). Their croissants are just ok (seemed stale). Their coffee, who cares about the damn coffee. Consistently delicious and reasonably priced. I've read some complaints about the service but in my personal experience, the staff has been friendly and efficient every time. (I also typically stop by after the initial morning rush so that might be a factor to consider.) The outdoor seating situation is a bit cramped but if you come on a weekday you can sit on any of the concrete barriers near the sidewalk to stay and enjoy your coffee. They are also pup-friendly and have an indoor standing bar area if you prefer to eat inside. If you live in the area or are just passing through this place is an absolute must-try. read more

Okay. All of you who worked (except for Emma. She was better than everyone else) from the opening (8am) today 12/23 need to get re-trained because your customer service was worst of ALL. 1. I was the first in line. When you unlatched the front door at 8, you DID NOT open the door to let your customers in. I had to open the door to let myself in. This is only the beginning. 2. Thanks to Emma. She took my order friendly and nicely. The person after her was not quick and responsive to my questions. She gave me a look of what are you asking 3. At the cashier, she was the worst. I paid and it was all done but the box next to my pastries seemed like my order as well. I asked her if that's my order, she said no. Seconds later, the other person tells me that it was my order. So I had to pay for that order in addition to everything I paid for. So convenient. She also sighed when the phone went of. Come on! It was 8am in the morning and you just started your shift. Excuse me? 4. It's not over yet. My cup of cafe au lait was SPILLED in the car cup holder because the cup and cap were very flimsy. You need to change these to better products. Also cafe au lair doesn't taste like before. It was ver bland. 5. There were no stoppers for to go drinks. Are you serious!??
