I literally stopped in for ten minutes to order some quick food to go before hopping on a Flix bus, but was bummed I didn't have time to stay longer. Came on a Saturday for a friend's birthday with a rezzy for 6. The first impression is some homeless riff-raff going on outside in the area. Upon walking in, the terrible smell others mention you notice right away by the entrance. We sat and half booth, half awkward large king-like cheap chairs that are not comfy to try to eat in, they are for lounging. Our server was all over the place. She spilled a drink on one of us from the get-go, and had other close similar calls. She also went MIA towards the end of our meal, and would never clean up old plates or cups, so our table remained cluttered and dirty. The food was pretty disappointing: -We ordered truffle fries with zero truffle in sight, they just tasted like plain fries. -The cheese that came with the pretzel was hard. -The rice that came with the shrimp plate was super bland. -Chicken pasta had a weird burnt taste to it and was inedible -Entres took a longgg time to come out. Also, our cocktails were all brought out one by one instead of all together. The Positive was they played decent music, but overall the vibes were just weird. It's like they are trying so hard to be chic and boujee but it's just cheap and ghetto when you really see it. I mean they have USB lights in the restroom with the wires just hanging...It didn't seem like there was any management. A few times someone came out of the kitchen who looked like they might be management, I tried making eye contact so we could get help clearing our table, but they didn't care. Also, we were in a rush to go to a concert, so I had to get up to ask for our check, since she stopped checking in on us when our meals were done. Also they added 20% gratuity which felt like robbery after our service. Apparently it's cheaper if you bring cash but who has that.. I didn't even take 2 bites, the thin chicken breasts covered in masala gravy, yellow box rice, and zucchini was left untouched. Ordered an expresso martini with tequila. I was served Kahlua mixed with tequila, the drink had no coffee beans and no sign of coffee if you ask me. Called in my order for lunch on Friday. (The day before I had tried to call for order and no one answered). The staff on the phone that took my order was courteous. I decided to get that days special which is a burger. I was asked how I'd like my burger cooked which I thought was a good sign. I was told the food would be ready in about 15 minutes. Arrived around that time frame. Walked in from the door along Market street. The first thing that I noticed immediately was the beautiful wooden interior of the building. Classic downtown West End vibes . This has gone through someones attempt at being upscaled though with a "nice" velvet seating. They tried to add a touch of class everywhere like the design on the tables being a lavish psychedelic paint scheme. There is what looks like could be a private room within the dining hall with books shelves and a nice big couch. There was ample seating both inside and out on their nice patio. While all very "nice" I couldn't help but also notice this foul stench. It's definitely something with the building because I've encountered the same odor when getting food from a neighboring restaurant in the same building. My burger arrived a little while after I arrived. What would be like an additional 10 or so minutes after arriving (I'm rounding up from about 7 or 8 minutes). The to go order was able to be paid for at the hostess booth which was convenient. When I arrived back at work to eat my food I was very impressed by the size of my burger. A very beautiful glistening bun. I opted for the potato chips over the fries. The order came with what I believe is an in house sauce. The chips paired very well with the sauce as a nice option to dip if inclined. The portion of food for the price was insanely good; especially for being downtown. With a cost after tax under 10$ its just such a great deal. Unfortunately, while very well priced, the burgers flavor was lacking. Was it good enough to justify coming back? Hard to say. For just about 5$ more I could get one of my favorite burgers in Dallas just a block away. Definitely plan on coming back to Chets to try some additional things on the menu. The day before when I had called I was bummed they didn't answer because the lunch special was a pot roast grilled cheese sandwich. I've heard the steaks are good too. Chets is a decent addition to the faltering West End and hopefully they can do something about the smell. Flavor of burger too maybe? Or maybe it's just my taste buds and everyone else loves it. Give it a try for yourself ? Or maybe opt for something on the next block. Up to you. I wouldn't say I'd recommend the place at this point. I stopped by Chet's around 5:45pm on a Tuesday. I made it just in time for happy hour, which ended at 6pm. I noticed that Chet's has a daily happy hour from 11am - 6pm. This was so wild to me as this may have been the longest happy hour I've ever seen. Additionally, anything off the classic cocktail list was only $6 during happy hour. What a steal! The bar staff was awesome. My bartender was particularly attentive, and he was also friendly and a great conversationalist. I ordered the Aviation cocktail and a Tom Collins, which were delightful and made well. Chet's was a fun, chill spot. On the suggestion of a local resident, I visited Chet's during the busy Eclipse weekend in Dallas, and I'm glad I did. I sat at the bar and had a refreshing beer while deciding on a meal option. I eventually chose a burger, which was extremely tasty, and the bar chips it's served with were fresh and excellent. Several seated close by seemed to being enjoying their meals as well, with one commenting how tasty my burger looked . . . and it did. The service at the bar (which was not overly busy) was only average, bordering on weak. There wasn't much I needed, but I've appreciated that opportunity to order another drink. The process to complete payment was a bit slow, but I was not in a rush at all, so that's OK. I like the look of the place, and I do easily recommend it to others who might be in the area. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and sat down around 2:35 PM. Apparently, they have a strict policy of not serving anything off the lunch menu after 3 PM. When my partner ordered a burger--which, for some reason, isn't on the all-day menu--our request was refused. This was despite our server, who was absolutely lovely and even helped us warm our 6-month-old's milk, trying to accommodate us. I came specifically for the Fish & Chips, a dish priced at over $30. To then be told they couldn't serve a simple burger, which I'm sure would've been mediocre anyway based on the pretzel we ordered, was frustrating. Speaking of the pretzel, it came with sweet mustard--who does that? We only had one beer and the pretzel, and still ended up with a $25 tab. The menu itself is a mess--no clear identity. Guacamole, shrimp ceviche, or a warm pretzel? It's all over the place. We won't be coming back. Business must be booming if they can afford to turn down guests just because an order was placed after 3 PM. Ridiculous. I had to ask for a little aside of cream sauce to add to it just for my liking, but it was honestly very flavorful. The only negative I have is that 3pm is too early to end a their lunch menu. An update to my review of two years ago... Chet's is still the best choice for lunch, dinner or just drinks in the West End. They have daily lunch specials. Friday is burger day - which is what I had today. It normally comes with fresh kettle chips, but I paid the $2 upcharge for seasoned fries. The presentation on the food was excellent - I wish I had taken a picture of it to upload here - as was the taste. Their drink menu is still unique and relatively inexpensive. Try their Old Fashion, the smoked Mezcal, or my favorite - the Lemon Lavender Old Fashion. Service was Hanna was excellent today, as always! read more
