I am from out of town and this place came recommended by many for local thrifting. The colored tag promotion that day was 3 items for $1 (in those tag colors). Naturally those tags were not in abundance as I searched for the day. I still was able to get some deals via the 50% tag colors and left with 3 items for $10, which for thrifting recently is pretty good. Especially considering how inflation has reached thrift stores. There is a lot of vintage to be found here for my vintage girlies, but you need to be willing to search and we were just visiting, and honestly spent enough time for what we did buy. I wouldn't say it was organized that great and I can't really say if I like how stores do color coordination over size. Organization by size is much easier; though if you're searching for a specific color the other way has its benefits too. Inevitably wading through so much inventory is tedious. At any rate, a nice store, though certainly no frills. It smelled like a thrift store and was not one of the cutesy thrifts of this generation. read more

Village Discount Thrift is like a treasure hunt. It's a vast space where you might unearth hidden gems or come up empty-handed, depending on the day. The prices are more than fair, and the selection is impressive. The only hiccup I encountered was when I found a belt I really liked, but it didn't have a price tag. Unfortunately, they didn't price it for me, and they didn't let me buy it. I wasn't the only one facing this issue; the person in front of me in line also had an untagged item they didn't let her purchase. Don't come here if you get tired and occasionally need to sit down! Management will accuse you of switching tags and not let you buy anything. I got out of the hospital for pancreatitis a couple days ago. I'm very easily fatigued. I found a little bench out of the way and sat down to sort through what I found and make final decisions. I like to do a final look-over of everything, checking for holes or stains, then take off hangers and fold items before I checkout. Keep things organized, ya know? The only difference this time was that I sat down out of the way to do it... When I went to checkout, a woman I assume was a manager walked over and grabbed EVERYTHING of the counter, accused me of switching tags, and said I couldn't buy any of it. She accused me of hiding in a corner changing tags! I'm flabbergasted. I almost want to laugh! I have shopped here SO many times before. This review is strictly based on a Bag I bought on 9/6/22. It was a Coach Duffel bag and I paid $36 for the bag. It was fake, and I would caution everyone who goes to the Village to buy, to NOT buy any purses or bags that are luxury design bags. I did a short research to see if it was authentic, but it was not. This thrift space in Logan Square is enormous. Kind of reminds me of Savers (for Hawaii people) but with more eclectic and potentially golden finds. You have to be in a headspace for retail therapy and practice patience bc the only way you're going to find something great is by rapidly moving through each hanger, one rack at a time. If you don't have that kind of time, this experience might be overwhelming and may not be for you. A yelper mentioned a great tip! If you spot any fashion-savvy teens tossing their initial picks, snag it right away because they've already gone through a section of the rack and picked up the quality items. They have only 1 bathroom, and it's so disgusting (like porta potty after 8 hrs at a rave festival level disgusting). So pls go to the bathroom before you come, or find a coffeeshop or fastfood store outside. read more

I loved this outlet just like the many other Village Discount Outlets around the city. I literally spent over two hours at this outlet because of its huge selection of clothing items which seemed very cluttered in certain parts of the store, but still organized by item and color which helped me out a lot because I came looking for a pair of red pants. I came to this outlet in search for that, and left with it plus a brown cardigan and burgundy faux leather pants. I spent just short of $11, which is always good in my book. The only thing that I can say that frustrated me while shopping at Village Discount Outlet was the customers with carts clogging up the walkways. Advice that I give about shopping here is to make sure you have plenty of time to search, and inspect the item that you intend on purchasing because there may be a discrepancy to it such as a stain, rip, or missing button + zipper. If your intentions are on buying furniture, I would advise you to go elsewhere because there is not much of a selection. Parking is no issue unless you come when the store is crowded on the weekend. read more

I would have to say this particular location is very large, so large that they have a second floor dedicating to men's and infants' departments. With that being said, I didn't even get a chance to visit the second floor, since the merchandize upstairs wasn't applicable to my needs. I went on the day when they had the President's Day half-off sale. The location is too gigantic to do a detailed, go-through-everything kind of shopping. Instead, I utilized the "point-and-shoot" strategy so I wouldn't spend too much time on one (1) department alone. I have say that the thrill of thrift shopping is "never-knowing." As I was haphazardly going through the women's shoe department, I found an old-fashioned portable, travel jewelry box, unanticipatedly . Apparently, it was really out of place, but I purchased it for $1.08. Now it has a home for someone who has lots of jewelry! The reason why I couldn't give a higher rating was the presence of "miscellany" department. I bet that department was created because they didn't know what to with some of the items. If someone who works there doesn't know how to handle them, will he or she expect an average dude or dudette to be sufficiently incorporate some of those items into his or her everyday life? Never mind...I totally forgot that I was thrift shopping. Please ignore my comment above. I should have gotten a cup of Ipsento or Nutella coffee from Ipsento (which has awesome coffee...nearby this VDO) before I joined the battle. Anyways, this location is literally one (1) black away from the CTA Western (O'Hare branch) blue line station. If you hope to patronize the CTA, once you get of the station, find Milwaukee Ave. and walk one (1) block "west." Understand that Milwaukee runs diagonally north-south, so if you use Western Ave. as a reference point, this DVO appears to be on the west of the Western Ave. I didn't see much street parking, so taking public transportation is recommended (CTA Western Blue Line station in 1 block). read more

When did Thrift Shopping become unfun? When I visited Village Discount! It's a mess, completely unorganized, they could care less that you're a paying customer, but then again it's DAMN CHEAP! The men's selection is 1/4 the size of the women's, and if you're looking for pants it's almost impossible to find something cool, and also in your size. Most Thrift Stores organize by style, then by waist size, Village Discount just throws all pants of similar style onto a rack with no regard for organizing by waist size. There's no dressing room to try on anything. I used to love the shoe finds at Thrift Stores, and didn't mind at all that I was probably wearing some dead guy's wingtips! But the shoes here aren't even dusted or polished before they're put on the shelf, and good luck finding anything in your size! I did find a very cool Sears Roebuck & Co. sweater, and a kid's xylophone. As I was paying for them yesterday the cashier noticed there was no price stapled to the sweater and said "no price, no buy" or something like that. Confused, I basically said "the other sweaters were a buck 80, I'll give you that for it." She repeated her mantra, and said I should speak with a manager, which I did. He stated I would need to come back tomorrow while they priced it overnight. Are you kidding me?! I offered the guy $2 for the sweater and he's making me come back? Okay, they gave me a ticket and I came back the next day. Today when I came back with my ticket, the item had been tossed in a bin and still had no price. So what did they do? They sent someone to price it and bring it back! Genius! They could have done that first, instead of jerking me around. read more

There are certain advantages to living along the gateway to the northwest side, Milwaukee Avenue. The biggest one is Polish food galore (and about a thousand taquerias). But a closely following second is that MilAve (it's going to catch on, I swear) from Division to Damen and from Western to California is bargain heaven. There are cute little consignment, vintage, and thrift stores catering to every need. Especially furniture. Though actually important to this review is clothes. Village Discount on Milwaukee is not one of those cute little consignment stores. It is a megalith of rock bottom chain retail. While I haven't been to the other locations of Village, I can vouche for this one. It has things people might actually want (of course with how gigantic it is, they have to have something just playing the number's game). Especially if those people might be hipsters looking for irony in every color of the rainbow. The t-shirts are all organized by color (and nicely hung up on horizontal hangers instead of circular racks for ease of use). Red is especially nice here. I picked up a 2007 Red Sox World Championship t-shirt for $1.40. Then again, that wasn't ironic for me, just awesome (on a few levels). As far as "pricier" items than t-shirts go, the selection gets a little thinner. On Saturday afternoon, I came in looking for a white suitcoat. They had two in the store. Thankfully one fit. I couldn't believe the thing was $2.20. Seriously? $2.20? That's the kind of price I was paying at thrift stores in high school 15 years ago - lower even (and amazingly they have a lot of half priced days each year). It hasn't increased? I thought since it was a suit coat, I misread the label and it was $22.00. The cashier actually had to convince me not to give her $11.00 for their half priced Mother's Day sale. I was able to get the rest of a Don Johnson inspired 1980s South Beach ensemble for the Yelp Spring Fling for $2.30. Take that vintage stores! There may be more depressing actual poor people who shop here out of necessity to "deal" with (get it, deal) than other places but the bargains are worth it. Most def one of my favorite thrift stores in Chicago. I must warn you that this place is packed with stuff which can be slightly overwhelming and it isn't organized past category of garment. (no size or color) There is also a very prominent scent happening. But besides that, it's great. The day I was here most recently they had yellow pink and orange tags marked 50% off. The clothing here is priced extremely well. (97 cents to $7) And then half off, Im a happy camper. The whole time I was there, 4 little kids, yelling, bumping into people yelling. Not one employee or manager Tony? said anything to them. He also announces keep valuables with you. A mother leaves her 2 year old in a cart, by herself. Not even within her sight. I get up to the register. Gal at register debating with another worker about her schedule. Then manager comes up. He starts arguing with her as I wait to get rung up. I almost left it on the counter and walked out. Then all the gal said was the price and "don't you have a five"? This place is A thrifter's paradise!! I was just amazed with all the stuff that they had.. I would recommend bringing your own bags as the cashier will charge you some odd cents for one. Also there is no dressing room there so wear some legging and a tank top and prepare to try stuff on right there where you stand(seems like the norm because I noticed everyone else doing it) Either way be prepared to spend at least 3 to 4 hours in there.. exploring and finding treasures.. it's the best!! read more

Let me review this as someone who's a realist about thrifting, and doesn't consider the fact that they don't have a dressing room an atrocity. To those people, go back to the Buffalo Exchange. The proper way to thrift is to try on clothes in the aisles, Derpina. So far, this is one of the best thrift stores I've seen here in Chicago. They have a pretty decent selection of furniture and household goods, but it really receives my five star rating because of it's size and clothing selection. I found a really cute summer dress from Forever 21 in addition to a damned nice sweater from the Gap. Also found a brand new in the box martini shaker for $4, originally priced at $30! I go here at least once a week and have yet to come away empty handed. read more

This shop is an impressive, sprawling, rough, multi-roomed temple of discount items. It's strength is its breadth and depth of inventory. There are literally tons of goods for sale here. I don't know if I've seen a larger collection of clothing at a thrift store. The prices were quite reasonable - certainly lower than Goodwill and perhaps even a bit lower than Salvation Army stores. What issues does it have? On the main floor, the aisles seem narrow, especially in some of the rooms. They offer shopping carts, but there was no obvious way to get them upstairs to the mens and boys clothing. They should probably offer hand-baskets for their customers given the layout of the store (and for those who like to move quickly while shopping). Overall - I like it. I'm willing to overlook its flaws, as the inventory and prices are that good. read more

This place is huge, situated in what looks like a cavernous Dominick's hollow shell. Too soon, Chicago? Their shoe selection has ponied up some of the craziest pieces I own. White gogo boots. Electric green hi-tops. Spiked Death Metal boots with 4" heels. The dresses are typically pretty nice, but hipsters are in there throwing elbows to grab the most vintage and hep styles they can find, so prepare to wade in for a fight. Jeans can be hit or miss. I have never seen a larger collection of chola-chopped denim in my life. "Sexy" slits and decorative latticework tied and snipped into pairs of basic K-Mart blues. The womens' tops are all size X-small to medium, don't even bother. I don't know who is donating all these luscious pairs of Avenue size 22s, but they don't ever drop tops off, unless there is some serious award-winning pear-shapeage happening. I don't know what they were thinking when they tried to segregate all the vintage stuff upstairs on the second floor in a boutique-style upscale bid to charge more. That stuff is not vintage or interesting and much better swag can be found on the regular racks. This place still stupidly uses permanent marker on porous surfaces, rendering fun kitsch and housewares tacky and ruined with big ugly scrawling markers. I come here often, and look patiently through the racks of both women's and men's clothing; however, I have never been able to find a single item that stands out.Granted, it could just be my style. I haven't even been able to find vintage Chicago sports team jerseys, which is a bit unusual. Most of the items tend to come from the past few years, which could be a positive or negative depending on your style. Clothes are organised by color and type with woman on the first floor and men/boys on the second. The books/decorating section has seen better days but its good pickings! This is the first time I've ever been to a Village Discount Store, but now that I know there's several outlets around.... hahaha..... NEW Spring wardrobe here I come!! I was really lucky and stumbled in on their biggest sale of the YEAR , the Easter a.k.a. Spring Cleaning sale where everything (yes, EVERYTHING) was at 50% off! 1. This is one of, if not THE LARGEST clothing-centric thrift stores I've ever been to!! 2. The racks literally go on infinitely, I am not kidding you, there were at least 8-10racks of Women's clothing, 6-8 racks of Men's clothing, and a good 4-6 racks of Children's clothing 3. 80% of the clothes were UNDER $5!! At 50% off... yea, I was in heaven 4. Clothings were really organized in sections by TYPE (long-sleeve shirt v.s. short-sleeve dresses v.s. pants etc). Pants were neatly folded in half, with sizes noted so you don't have to take everything off the shelve just to find the wrong sizes 5. Did I mention the 3 racks of bags + a full back wall of housewares, blankets, pillows and other misc. items? I am a FAN after stumbling on this Village Discount Outlet! So glad we decided to try driving on Kedzie road, and even happier that I found the best steal in my life (a full-length Jessica McClintock Vintage night gown for $3, that's $1.50 after discount thank you!) WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!!! Did I mention the private parking lot? I'm not one of those people who has an immense amount of luck or patience with sifting through racks at a smelly, messy thrift store. Village Discount doesn't seem like a place that I would like. It's absolutely gigantic (think 3-4 intolerably large thrift stores conjoined at the hip, where each time you think you've reached the end of one, you're really just at the beginning of another)...but it's also really crowded and thus rather unnavigable. The blue line El constantly roars overhead and rattles the whole store while people attempt to push shopping carts through narrow littered aisles and children run completely amuck throughout. Sounds like a nightmare, however, I really like this place. I have never left without a handful of coveted finds (without having to look too hard, either) and have never spent more time in there than I can really stand. I'm a fan of colorful vintage drop-sleeve sweaters and classic Coach bags (no, none of that C-print crap) and this place is a goldmine for both. Last time I was here, I found four sweaters and paid below $5 for ALL of them, so the price is right, too. read more
