I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I was pleased with my visit to the Cameron Village shopping center this evening. It's not quite a shopping center and it's definitely not a mall. It's more like a carefully zoned outdoor entertainment center. Almost a "riverwalk" or "town center" that I've seen in other places. Surface streets cross through Cameron Village but there's lots of parking and you can easily miss parts of it because it's just a large retail and dining center. Cameron Village is a very interesting place in Raleigh. It's located right near NC state so this area swarms a lot of traffic. Not my cup of tea. Best described as a cross between the East Village of NYC and south shore of Long Island. A bunch of restaurants and non- commercial shopping all jumbled into an outdoor shopping / dining Mecca. Cameron is best to visit on a gorgeous day. There are miles of stores and quaint restaurants. I visited here during lunch and had a hard time finding the Flying Biscuit. It's located across from Wells Fargo ( the bandits of the banking world). They have quite a lot of furniture, home decor and posh boutiques for women. Today I made the biggest mistake of dining at Which Wich. Terrible sandwich place. There were so many other great restaurants that lined this area. Check it out tourists. read more

Bottom Line: An eclectic outdoor shopping center that sprawls several city blocks. Cameron Village is a shopping and dining destination with a variety of stores and restaurants catering to different price points. The outdoor shopping center also has services like salons and boutique gyms. I didn't get a chance to explore the entire shopping center yet but so far my favorites are Flying Biscuit Cafe, Steven Shell Living and Great Outdoor Provision Co. As far as parking goes, some areas seemed really congested while others were more open. Since we didn't mind walking we just parked where we found a spot and then started to explore. Generally, it seems like there is ample parking and it is free. read more

I want to address the name change first. I understand the reasoning behind wanting to change the name since Cameron was the name of the plantation. I love a good name change! The name Village District is just lazy. You could've done something special like Lunsford Village to honor the black abolitionist born in Raleigh. He was an entrepreneur too, in my eyes it's perfect. I hope the name is temporary. Other than that VD is a wonderful place to visit. Many antique stores which I love to explore whenever I'm able. It's a good place to walk around with family and friends. I have many good memories here from when I was a child to now as an adult. read more

When I visit Cameron Village, I feel like I've stepped back in time. The shops are modern and eclectic, there's a library with fun events, and there are lots of places to eat, but the setting is definitely retro and cool. It's usually pretty easy to find a parking spot, if you don't mind walking about a block, and the streets are well marked for pedestrians. Whether you're doing some serious shopping or just walking around, this is the place to be. read more

Yeah, strip malls sorta suck but somehow Cameron Village seems to make that concept bearable to me! Not a huge fan of any shopping spots but with CV right around the corner from my condo I'm there pretty often. They've got a great mix of stores that are both floofy, fun and practical so who am I to complain? Cameron Village highlights: * Great eating at Cafe Caturra and Goodberrys * Food shopping and flirting at Harris Teeter * Music coming out of their trees and potted plants * Window shopping at stores I can't afford * One of the best public libraries I've ever seen, CV Regional * Wake County ABC store for easy booze runs Cameron Village lowlights: * All the parking lots look the same, never know exactly where a store is * Ginormous SUV's driven by cellphone chatting moms * A slew of underwhelming and pricey restaurants But in general, Cameron Village is a great spot to hang out on a good weather day! Don't like this place. There are 5 or 6 different sections broken up by roads/traffic. Should just have one giant area that is pedestrian friendly without having to deal with cars crossing; like outlet mall style or South point. This really adds to the inconveniences, especially a desire to drive from one store to another if they are not in same section. Overall the layout is poorly designed. Also, it is kind of sad that on a Saturday afternoon, there are less than a dozen people wandering around shopping. Again, if you just compare the visitor stats of this place to that of malls, you see that there's something wrong... read more

I only visit here once in awhile, and not always because I want to. The latest adventure was to support GHI, and not being familiar with CV, parking seemed to be a bit of a challenge. Getting back out of the place was even more of a challenge as cars are racing up and down, in and out of the parking areas, disobeying traffic control devices (including traffic signals) and pedestrians are all about not paying attention to sidewalks and crosswalks. Personally, I think it's a dangerous place to be, for both pedestrian and motorist. I do like some of the shops here and certainly wouldn't mind coming back to experience some of the dining, as long as I don't have to go to Moe's or deal with traffic and parking. read more

Not really your typical shopping center, and not a set of strip malls, but a cluster of outdoor retail and dining spots made to feel like a village. Doesn't quite have that village feel to it as the name insinuated though. Like where is the local village fool and why is there so much traffic surrounding this village? No I call shenanigans on this. Like another reviewer said, it's kind of broken up by sections where you need to cross traffic in between, so not really the most pedestrian friendly experience. Nevertheless a nice spot to roam around and indulge over an afternoon and nicer than some of the other shopping centres in the state. A mix of big box chains and locally owned businesses. I suppose the latter one is what people like to call chic. You will find the world's only two story Chick-Fil-A location here. Oh gosh - Matt G, you mean I can now eat their signature waffle fries above street level. And I thought I had seen it all. It's clean, modern and parking isn't too bad. read more

Cameron Village is like a little slice of Chapel Hill, but in Raleigh. That's not a compliment. If you're in the mood to surround yourself with yuppie soccer moms (while simultaneously dodging their SUVs) and do some shopping at all of the same ole stores, then you're in luck. Overpriced, full of wealthy socialites, overpriced,crowded and of course FUN! I'm a fan of this shopping plaza because it has a few decent shops. I recommend 10,000 villages, Bargain Box, Great Outdoor Company, Charlottes, the Library(of course), Cat Banjo and Light years. There are also a few store full of interesting knick nacks that beg to be discovered like Beleza and another which I've forgot the name of. There is even a small shoe store which is a great place to buy running shoes. Not all stores here target yuppies wearing polka dots who prance around donning monograms(tacky!). Give this plaza a shot and you'll be amazed. Even expensive boutiques have clearance sales! I miss Blockbusters (I despise Netflicks), but I can still find a decent Redbox machine at the local grocery store. If you're looking for secret treasure; creep into this rather intimidating plaza and scrounge around a bit- you might find something spectacular! read more

What great service I got from Pier 1! Of course, it might have had something to do with no one being in there that early in the morning! It was 9:30 am! But, the gal was friendly and did try to help me find some things. Although when I went in there I wasn't even sure what I was shopping for, but soon figured I would shop for hostess gifts for the upcoming party season! So many parties to go to, I had to have something! Overall, very clean place, friendly service and good prices for little stuff! I love Cameron Village! The place has evolved with the times and needs of its consumers. I love that it is an outdoor strolling mall and doesn't feel like a strip mall. Very boutiquey! Cameron Village is one of my favorite shopping centers in the area. There's a pretty good mix of stores for every sort of need you might have, and some decent restaurants to catch a meal when you need a break from shopping. Given its location, most of the stores in the shopping center are reasonably high end, especially the clothing stores. That said it's one of the few places in town you can really shop for designer clothing at several different places at the same time. I'm a huge fan of the hamburgers and beer from the Village Draft House, and shopping at ten Thousand Villages and Accipiter. I've never not been able to find a parking space here-which is always a plus as well. read more

You know, this place really is as good as it gets. Cameron Village was one of the first "malls" in America. Now, I'm not saying that the mall-ification of America was a good thing. BUT, you can definitely still see the 50s charm here. It's completely outdoors, and invites one to stroll from store to store. Granted, the place is damn big, taking up a few blocks, but still - stroll as you will! There are some great shops here, mostly small, local (if pricey) names. But you do have a Pier One and (unfortunately) a Blockbuster Video. The Harris Teeter here is one of the finest supermarkets I've been to. And for a "high end" marketing experience, the Fresh Market is fantastic. There is also a great branch of the Wake County libraries here, an ABC store, and a decent array of restaurants - most notably, for me at least, the Village Draft House, and Piccola Italia (some of the best Italian food, and lunch specials, in all of Raleigh!) Again, I really dig the old-school 50s flair of this place. I've seen photos of it through the years, and it hasn't changed *too* much (tho the piped-in music that sometimes pops out of the planters is a little much). I have found myself checking out a book at the library and sitting on a bench and watching the folks do their thing... Cheesy? Perhaps. But damn, it's a nice afternoon! read more

I cannot believe it has been so long since I was here! So much has changed since I first visited Cameron Village a few years ago. It's not an area I drive past, so I pretty much forgot about it. I'm so glad I rediscovered this shopping gem! This is the perfect time of year to enjoy these outdoor shops and restaurants. There are several "chain" stores, but it's mostly made up of small boutique shops, which is a nice change from the mall. Cameron Village is a must for all of you ladies! read more

The perfect stop for an afternoon of shopping. Cameron Village has a great selection of clothing and jewelry stores (for women and kids; there's definitely less to offer if you're a man or shopping for a man) as well as some good gift stores (Accipiter, Charlotte's, Ten Thousand Villages) a few restaurants -- try the deli if you're looking for sammies, or if you want to spend a bit more or do something heartier, go to Foster's or Village Draft House. Could definitely use a cute cafe or smoothie shop here (they've got a Baskin Robbins, but an indie would be nice). read more

We had not been to the Picolo Italiano Italian bistro for more than ten years gut wanted to celebrate our birthdays and thought we would return. My memory of PI was a favorable one. My first impression was favorable as they have an inviting atmosphere and the dining room had been remodeled. The food is first class. Authentic and delicious. There are no shortcuts taken here and the pasta dishes, soups and Stromboli's are excellent. Service was good, but not great and we waited for our food a little bit longer than we thought we should. however, the wait was worth it. The price is a bit higher than other Italian restaurants in Raleigh but the cost is justified by the flavor and the use of first quality ingredients. All in all, a great place for a special evening. read more

Some good things and some bad: Good: Flying Biscuit - delicioussssss brunch and some great lunch & dinner choices too Enormous Chickfila Village Deli - pretty decent sandwiches, quick service Cat Bango - a lovely store with handmade jewelry (kinda expensive though) The Junior League of Raleigh's Bargain Box (OMG IT HAS so many nice items that people just donate..holy crap, I found a beautiful Express dress to wear to a wedding for $10. The Village Drafthouse- great beers, very good bar food Medlin-Davis- excellent dry cleaning Fun place to walk around and shop without being suffocated inside a mall Bad: Parking is kinda crazy, but at least there is a lot of spaces Snooty environment Cafe Carolina is still there and still not that great I am sure I am forgetting many places, but overall, Cameron Village is an excellent (but expensive) place to shop. read more

I love the atmosphere at Cameron Village, they have a pretty good variety of shops and restaurants including small clothing boutiques and different shops like the new little tea shop that sells hundreds of varieties of teas! Definitely a nice place to walk around and get a bite to eat! read more

I see a few people complaining about the layout, and to them I say, go find your bland mall or gigantic asphalt surrounded strip mall if that's your thing. Cameron Village really stands out among all the other shopping centers in this area. Many - perhaps most - of the stores are independent boutique-type establishments (Beanie and Cecil, Uniquities, Accipiter, Charlotte's) rather than national chains. It's an outdoor shopping center, rather than a contained indoor mall, so it's nice to walk around in. There are also several good local places to grab lunch, dinner, or a drink. read more

What a cute little outdoor shopping center. They have a ton of unique shops, mixed in with a good number of outdoor eateries. All the stores are a bit on the high end side, however if you search hard enough, you will be able to find a couple of really cute pieces that are reasonably prices. My favorite store was Madison. Super Duper cute. Such a sweet atmosphere. I can't even imagine what it is like during the Spring and Summer, it must get packed. The day that boyfriend and I went was really cold so we weren't into walking around too much. The ABC liquor store still throws me through a loop, but they have one there. The music piped in is a nice touch and adds to the atmosphere. The one battle field wound was seeing the multi floor Priscilla's of Boston completely empty. *pain in the chest* All of the furniture was still in there, I can't even imagine how beautiful it must have been in it's peak. We hit a few stores, such as ann taylor, the spice store, and an outdoor actives store. We also got a great recommendation from a Ann Taylor employee to try Cafe Cattura. I love this place, and I am not a shopper. It's more than a shopping center, it's and experience and a contemporary, ever-evolving piece of history. This icon of Raleigh is celebrating 60 years in business October 4 - October 11. Not only is there historic value (first shopping center in the southeast, first planned shopping center in the US, former home to the "underground" clubs of the Subway that helped launch the careers of Bette Midler, the Ramones, REM and many more), but it sounds like there will be a lot of fun activities. I grew up in Raleigh and some of my earliest memories are of Cameron Village. It was quite a huge shopping center for the 60s and it just wasn't Christmas until we had scurried around "the village" a few times selecting our gifts and running back for last minute goodies. As a teenager I was more impressed with the malls that opened but these days when I return to Raleigh for a visit I always like to stop by - especially to the Fresh Market. read more
