This store has everything. From the street it looks like a tiny store but it goes back a long way and every catacomb, nook and cranny is full. If you need it, I bet they have it! Sadly, the only negative experience we've ever had in this town. The key fob battery to our car died, preventing us from being able to start it. It was a few minutes past closing time, but the open sign was lit up on the door. We called in and they even answered the phone. I explained to them that we had two toddlers and were stranded without a battery replacement for the key fob. We asked the woman if she would kindly let us in to buy what was a $5 item. Offered to just leave cash and be gone. She was incredibly rude and shut us down because the registers were closed. What a terrible feeling to be a parent stranded in a town you don't live in, where the simplest request could've made a huge difference. Fortunately, the other retailers in town were very willing to help. Whoever the woman was at that store, I hope she never find herself in a similar predicament and has met with the same attitude. read more

My sister and I went up to Idyllwild for a snow day, they just had a big snowfall so we purchased chains form Amazon ($36 GREAT reviews) in case we needed them up there. They ended up sending me the wrong size so we had to purchase some at the Village Hardware store (rather be safe than sorry & STUCK like we've been before). The men here are SO rude, especially the older bald headed one. I walked in and told them I needed chains -- "what size?". I'm like uhhh 17inch wheels? -- "No we need all the numbers." (Mind you we're from the OC, we haven't grown up in snow so we weren't exactly sure what we were looking for.) I took a picture of the inside of my door like I do when I'm purchasing rims, and go back inside to show them. -- "You got the picture?" I'm all cheery.. "Yep sure do!" the older bald guy who was the rudest of them all was like "No no no no no, we need all THREE numbers". He's not even explaining where to find them. I mean honestly, picture your two young daughters trying to figure this out, he wasn't even trying to assist us at all. Finally, an older lady that worked there was sweet enough to show us on her phone exactly what we needed a picture of. (That's the only reason they even get a star, is because of her). We get the right pic and when I show him he tells me the only chains that are gonna work are $150(!). I asked if he had any other ones and he gave me some bullshit excuse about not putting bulky ones on my car. He saw an opportunity to ake advantage of two Orange County girls and took it. He wouldn't even show me what they had available on his screen. I'm honestly being SO polite even at this point, so I venture to ask "Do you think we really need them today?", I kid you not he says -- "I don't know. I can't answer that for you. I can't be responsible for whether or not you need chains, that's something you have to decide for yourself". I didn't ask him to decide for me, I just wanted an honest FRIENDLY opinion. I bought the chains because the last thing we needed was to be stranded somewhere on ice. We continue our day to the Nature Valley Center to sled, and the nicest Park Ranger tells me, "You'll need to take those off when you leave the park today. You didn't even need those chains, the roads are beautiful." (Oh, I can't for get this pretty little part: there are absolutely no refunds on the chains.) I have a huge following on social media and a lot of friends that are planning to take the trip up to Idyllwild to enjoy it. I made sure to tell them all to avoid this store at all costs. They're a rip off and they take advantage of nice people who aren't from the area. I don't care what you need, you can find it at another store in the same area. Hell, I'd go all the way back home before I purchased something here again. This place has a great stock of parts a home owner may need for most home projects. That's the reason I give it one star, otherwise, I'd not even give even one star to this place due to the negative attitude of the old man behind the counter, who by the way he acts, i assume is the owner. The last time I visited this place, and sweared never put a step again at his door again. I went to look for a piece of lumber. I only needed 2 feet of wood that they did not have available. Looking in their trash, I found one small piece exactly with dimensions I needed and I asked how much it would cost me; the attendant said if it was for him he would give it to me for free, but he said he'd not like to be fired, so he charged me 80 cent for the piece. When I went to pay I gave $1.00 to the owner and walked away and said thank you. The guy immediately yeld at my and said " are you going to eat this! You owned me 2 cents! Are you going to eat this!? If you are going to eat it I'll not charge you 2 cents you own me" . My response was "you don't need to act as an xhole, all you have to say is that I'm missing two cents, and no, I'm not a beaver to eat this piece of wood so here one dollar that will cover the 2 cents that I'm missing and you can keep the change. I hope you become rich fast" and I stepped out. Several people have ran into issues with this man here in Idyllwild. Many categorize him as racist, others as a-hole. If you visit this place I hope you have a Betty experience than me and many others. What a great place! They have in stock hard to find items that I was having problems getting at other stores. Their #1 lumber would have had to be special ordered in some of my local stores or in case of Home Depot or Lowes, they didn't even know about it. Our favorite primer could not be found in 4 of my local suppliers, so we made a trip up the mountain to get it. Staff was friendly & helpful as well as knowledgable! read more

I have been using the place for about ten years because they are small and have a decent selection of stuff. The guys upfront have a tendency to ignore women unless you practically jump up and down and wave at them, and they are often semi-rude. But now with covid 19 they have decided not to wear masks, so I will no longer patronize the business at all. I'd rather use the other store or drive to Hemet. read more

This place had exactly what we needed and the staff was very polite and friendly. It reminded me of an ace hardware. We just got down the mountain from camping at Boulder Basin and it started to drizzle so we needed to pick up truck tie downs and tarps. They had a decent selection that was able to get the job done. There are only 2 hardware stores in Idyllwild. When I went to Forest Lumber (Ace) about a month ago- they were not following health guidelines (wearing masks). Now they are! When I went to Village Hardware a few days ago- the (male clerk) was not wearing a mask (other employees were). What is it with this town and employees not wearing masks and potentially spreading Corona virus? I congratulate Forest Lumber for changing-- now, I wish Village Hardware would get on board 100%. Called here in our way up the mountain looking for snow sleds. They had them so we stopped by, paid a reasonable price for 2 nice sleds, and got a great tip on where to go take our little boy sledding. Friendly service and parking right out front. Don't trust the tire chains here. Spent over $80 on a set of chains and they broke the same day. Came back to the store and reported the issue to the staff. They basically told me "tough luck". It was pretty concerning how they handle this. Considering the risk of chains breaking while driving on the slippery snowy roads, a more responsible manager would have at least assured that they would look into this and report the issue to the manufacturer. read more

We are new to the area and happened upon this place. During our first visit, the tough-acting old man behind the counter was rude to a customer and did not go out of his way to help me, just pointed his finger. I gave them a second chance, went in wearing my mask, as I did the first time, the old man behind the counter was not wearing a mask and he was talking really loud with another person about how Covid was a hoax and Trump better win again. A few customers walked out after hearing this conversation and seeing that he was not wearing a mask. My father in law went in today to return something the old man had not repaired correctly. When he arrived home, he was so upset. The old man would not take responsibility for his error and gave my father in law a bad time for returning it. After some time, the old man begrudgingly fixed it while muttering foul language. We will NEVER step foot inside this business again. read more
