The pricing, on especially the breakfast entrees are truly reasonable with great sitting for small groups within the restaurants especially a book club. Went here today against my better judgement. A friend wanted pie and it was Pie Day! The place was filthy. There was food on the floor and so many table went without being bussed. Then we're far from busy but for whatever reason were opposed to cleaning a table. The coffee mug I received was not smooth on a otherwise smooth mug which would indicated there is some funk left on it from another patron. It put up so many red flags up for this germ-a-fob. The only bright side of night was Brie the server. She was attentive and knowledgeable. It will be another 10 years before I can get the image out of my head and get dipped into another trip here. I have eaten here for years! The employees are the secret ingredient for this little spot! I went by today and just had coffee - Jeff was professional, kind, and friendly. The coffee was fresh, delicious, and hot! It was very relaxing and I felt almost pampered! I will keep returning as long as they are open! read more

I wish I could give this review a 5 for my server. The poor women was doing the absolute best she could. She was sweet, attentive and tried very hard to get everything needed for each table. The reason I'm giving this a 2 star review is for the big, burley guy who screamed across the room at two elderly people just trying to make his life easier. These people had waited at the host stand for about 5 minutes, with no acknowledgement. The elderly gentleman made eye contact with the burly server and pointed at a table asking if it was available. The burly guy YELLED across the room WHAT?!? Which startled myself and the guests around me. We all made awkward eye contact with looks of disbelief. The other 2 servers on the floor were noticeably shook by his outburst. When the burly man finally made it to the host stand the gentleman asked why he shouted at them. He very loudly said something along the lines of "I have rude people shouting across my dining room. Really?". Then proceeded to seat them. I was so embarrassed and put off by this entire experience I asked for my check and left. The burly man checked me out at the register and I was honestly terrified when I messed up my payment. I have ran a restaurant for 6 years, general manager for 2. There is absolutely NO excuse to YELL at a customer. This man should not have a job here. The other servers had told some tables they are very short staffed, and we were all very understanding. Maybe if he was gone they would have staff who showed up and stayed. My husband and I randomly came here for breakfast. It was delicious! I ordered the Rio Grande Skillet and my husband ordered eggs and hash browns. Everything was fresh right down to the veggies in my pico de Gallo. We topped everything off with warmed apple pie (double yum!) and the service was excellent. Should we find ourselves back in Des Moines, this breakfast will be in the top of our list. read more

So I made a trip across town because the village inn close to my house was out. I called and they had it ready to go. Only $11. I expected grocery store quality and wow, I was overly impressed. I was looking for a diner on a Saturday morning that didn't require a long wait, and I came across this "gem." It's got decent food and service. The food portions are trucker-stop style, loading most breakfast options with carbs (panckes and potatoes) for that long 15-hour ride. I found it interesting that the servers decided to vacuum their floors during the Saturday morning rush, but to each their own. In their defense, they don't pretend to be. The food can be a bit inconsistent so I've learned to stick with Generican menu items. Breakfasts, burgers, skillets and the like. Tried a Rueben type meal once, just to find out, and not so much. You don't know unless you try. Yes the water sucks here. PSA: the water in ALL of West Des Moines sucks; filtered or not. I can usually get coffee down my throat, but I stick with what comes from a can... tomato juice, OJ, etc. and buy bottled water for home. Period. The silverware and dishes are always debris free and clean. I've NEVER gotten ill, in any way, from this place. If a server doesn't wanna be there, I can tell and tip accordingly. I don't go here to help me feel wealthy, I go here to make me feel full and mostly satisfied. Give 'em a break. This place is consistently average thank you. read more

Sorry about that guys poor service but I have had good and bad there. One waitress there Mary works mornings is a terrible server. She gives customers bad looks, takes for ever to wait on you, takes your plate when you have your last bite on your fork, never friendly, and never asks how your meal was. I've been to this village in twice now, and both times the English muffins have been bitter. The first time it was so bad, it was inedible. It tasted like rancid oil, or some such. The staff decided I must be wrong, and ignored it after I (and my companion whose food was also bad) complained. The country potatoes were undercooked badly second time, and the water unfiltered and pretty bad tasting. We did have a nice waiter at the second visit, but since almost every single item served was badly executed, it's a place to avoid if at all possible. read more

The waffle my mother ordered had lettuce in it, the steak and eggs my dad ordered was cold with runny egg whites and the skillet I ended up with was not even warm. Had a very bad experience at this Village Inn. I came in and was told there was going to be a 10 minute wait for a table while there were 6 cleaned and open tables in sight of the hosting stand. This was the worst village inn experience I've encountered. We were quoted a 15 min wait for a group of 12, which is no problem as it was Sunday afternoon. However, there were multiple open tables, most of them were dirty at the time. When we finally were sat it took 10 mins for our server, Jen, to greet us and get our drink orders. After she got our drink order it took over 25 mins to get water and coffee. Half the group didn't even get all of the drinks that we ordered. We finally all got our drinks and as the server is taking our food Order she took half the tables order and then said "ill be right back to get the other half of the tables order." She proceeded to put in half the tables order then go get drink orders for two more tables. It took over 10 mins for her to come back and get the rest of the groups order.The entire group was ready to order at her initial visit. There was a long wait for food which again is no problem as it was Sunday and we had a larger group. However, since she put in the orders at separate times, half the table waited for our food. We didn't receive our food until the other half of the group was half way done with their food. She also took out another tables food order as the rest of the group waited for our food. All said in done the food was fine but the staff was lacking. I'm not sure if they were under staffed that day, but everything took extremely long. This was easily the worst service I've ever had at any restaurant I've every been too. Very disappointed with the service we received. read more

We've been coming here since we've moved in west Des Moines. I've read the reviews and really got upset with the photo I've seen where one host gave to one of the customers. We've never had a bad server in this place, but that was just really wrong. We came here one time for breakfast but we mostly come here for a late dinner and probably just our luck that we always get the server and she is super sweet and always check on us to make sure we everything is ok. We love the pies here. They have a huge selection and feels homemade every time we visit (They might need to update their menu too.) We love the Philly Egg Benedict, Ultimate breakfast, Belgian Waffle combo, Ultimate skillet and a lot more. We came here during winter to get some hot cocoa and skip the whole meal and get some PIES!Our favorites would probably be country apple, carrot cake, french silk and caramel pecan silk. Our least favorite will probably be the chocolate peanut butter cup and southern pecan pie. It was way too sweet and pecan tasted weird. We like coming to this place since they're not too busy and the food is always hot and freshly cooked. read more

My wife and I have been eating breakfast here a couple times each week for over 5 years. I would recommend all of the waitresses except Mary. Monica, who is the best is off on Mondays. The food is generally quite good, but the quality does vary. My only real complaint is with the dishwashing. It's hard to get a clean cup. They need to replace their dishwasher or their dishwashing method. read more
