Living in Arizona half my life I was spoiled with many good authentic Mexican restaurants. Moved back to Michigan about 20 years ago and am still searching for really good Mexican food. Technically it's Sonoran style . Rarely outside of a tacobell did I find hamburger filled burritos. I'm still amazed at what some consider a wet burrito a good offering. Anyways in constant pursuit of something better than the norm in Michigan I saw this place had shredded beef burritos. The basis of my favorite back in the AZ. My nephew chose their fajitas. And he enjoyed them. I chose the shredded beef burrito dinner that came with rice and beans. Now my favorite variation is to ask for the burrito enchilada style. That's just topping it with enchilada sauce and melting cheese on it and a light amount of tomatoes, green onions and cilantro on top. And the guy taking my order said they couldnt do it because the enchilada sauce was precooked. Precooked? It's just a sauce. Tried to get me to just order enchiladas. After going back and fourth the best I could get was a side of sauce to put on myself. I received 2 tiny burritos and true to his word with nothing on them. Rice and beans. Rice was tasteless. Didn't even give me salsa so I could fix it up. Beans had no melted cheese which if it isnt the norm it should be. And the burritos which I am happy to say they didn't stuff with Rice and beans to limit the beef but there was no flavor at all. Like they took leftover roast beef and stuffed the small tortillas with it. I have had luck in the last 15 years a few times down in the Detroit area. Ironically not really in Mexico town area. But I will continue to search for a good Mexican restaurant north of 23 mile. Maybe keyword in search should be Sonoran. Tastes differ and these guys may be what you would like so give them a try. I myself am moving on . Place is small, just carryout. Seemed fast enough. And in today's market not over expensive. I like my tacos like I like my coffee. Any way I can get them and preferably for free. Now I've had Rico's fresh and I've had it brought to me. The major downside to this place is that it is cash only, and I am not that person. Now I'll start with, I grew up in CA. So what I may look for in a great place is NOT going to be what someone from MI does. As usual, I start with the rice and beans. The rice while colored well, was under salted and too soft. The beans had the thing going on where you can tell the first cook was done too hot/high. The ground beef wasn't a life changer, but it rarely ever is. They do have barb and chicken as alternate offerings though. I'll go if it's what everyone else wants. I am not going to cry if I'm craving it and they're closed. read more

We've always been interested in ordering take out from Rico's. I've always heard good things about their chips so I ordered the nachos. I ordered mine without meat so it came with lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, and cheese. I got the small which was $6 but they were huge! Read the reviews, got curious. Talked to people that suggested this place, heard it was great food for a great price. Walked in to a small no frills pick up area with a packed room of customers and bustling area behind the counter with employees working hard. I got nervous that I couldn't decide what I wanted fast enough , but when I got to the front, the employee was patient and helpful. $14 fed three people and we are stuffed. BARBACOA!!!! I didn't see it on the menu, but after reading some reviews I saw that they had barbacoa! We stopped in and asked for barbacoa tacos, and they made them with no problem. YUM. My only regret is that on our visit to Saginaw we could only eat there twice. If they had been open on Sunday we were going to load up and fill our freezer with those tasty tasty barbacoa tacos. Wow - best Mexican I've eaten in Saginaw! Perfectly sized tamales come fresh and hot wrapped in corn husk with a side of excellent spicy salsa. Rice and beans are great but nothing special, disappointed that whole beans aren't an option. Guacamole, salsa, and other sides go well with the housemade tortilla chips. I love Mexican takeout and Rico's is a great example of it: homemade everything, quick (like, super-quick. So quick it's in the bag before I'm done fishing for change), and cheap. Wow, is it cheap. Please do yourself a favor: drive past Taco Bell and every other fast-food chain on Tittabawassee and Bay roads and get yourself a 99 cent taco, or four, or a dollar forty-nine bean tostada, or a homemade tamale, which you will not be seeing at any fast food chain anytime soon. The fresh crispy corn tortillas are the star of the show here. They sell bags of them at the counter, along with some other goodies, for your at-home Mexican cooking needs. A little rant: I want to compliment this place for not jumping on the new faux "authentic" Mexican bandwagon, which everyone seems to think requires loading everything with cilantro and raw onion and calling it a day. Food that is freshly prepared and seasoned well - be it americanized, tex-mex, or otherwise transformed - trumps "authentic" unless "authentic" is actually done well. So, at Rico's your tacos come with lettuce, cheese (yellow little shreds strewn on top, gasp!), tomato, and homemade hot sauce, and it satisfies this Midwestern girl's taco craving just fine.
