Farmington's highly skilled and compassionate caregivers and staff provided outstanding care for my…read moremom until the end of her life. She came to live at Farmington after a difficult period. She had been in the hospital and then a rehabilitation center after suffering a hip fracture at a retirement community's memory unit in Portland's West Hills. That community looked like a high end hotel and was considered the best in the Portland area. It was expensive but I assumed it meant my mom would be receiving high quality care and that was extremely important to me. I quickly learned that a beautiful facility and high fees do not translate to good care. The staff were pleasant but did not seem connected to the residents and took care of their needs in a perfunctory manner. They were also unskilled when it came to working with memory impaired individuals. When I called to check in, they seemed to have no idea how my mom was doing and my mom was rarely bathed. This concerned me and so I ended up paying extra for personal caregivers several times a week. It was at this facility that my mom was intentionally pushed over by an 18 year-old unskilled caregiver and suffered a extremely painful and debilitating hip fracture. After rehabilitation, my mom arrived at Farmington Square. She was crying and clinging on to me as this was her third transition within a span of 2 months. I was not able to accompany her inside as Farmington was abiding by strict COVID protocols. The staff there went out of their way to help my mom feel at ease and helped her get to know other residents. They also reassured me. Whenever I called to check in on her, they clearly seemed to know and care about her and provided detailed updates. When I spoke with her on the phone, she seemed happy. Once limited visits were allowed, they were very accommodating. In June of 2021, my mom's health declined and she was placed in hospice. Initially, I was going to bring her to my home, but I realized her needs exceeded my capabilities. I felt like I was letting her down but after spending time at Farmington with her, I quickly realized that she had wonderful relationships with the residents and caregivers and it was home to her. My sisters and I stayed with my mom 24/7 during the last weeks of her life and we were able to observe the consistent high quality care that my mom as well as all the other residents received. These outstanding caregivers were all emotionally mature individuals who were naturally compassionate people. They were attuned to my mom's needs and she was receptive to their caregiving because they were well-trained and had developed a trusting relationship with her. The staff and administrators even took care of me and my sisters. They brought in trays with coffee, ice water, and snacks and sat beside us as we struggled to say goodbye to our mom. Through these experiences I have seen the very worst and the very best of care for a loved one. Farmington exemplifies the very best by focusing their efforts on hiring extraordinary caregivers, which meant that my mom was always clean and comfortable and experienced the joy of meaningful relationships and feeling loved at the end of her life.

Ok as a place to live, terrible as a place to work…read more The facility is kept clean and sanitary. The buildings are well lit and modern looking. The food is decent. The residents are bathed often and have clean clothing and hair is combed. The downside for them is that the staff is treated badly and so there is high turnover, so they may be cared for by people who do not know them very well. The pay here is barely above minimum wage. The managers treat their employees like they are in middle school not actual adults. They "reprimand" for things that the employees were never actually taught. People like to be treated respectfully, and if they are not, they will leave. It's a vicious cycle which seems to explain the constant revolving door. It's a shame because most of the residents are nice and deserve to have caring people looking after them. Contacting Radiant Human Resources is a complete waste of time. They only pretend to care about you as a publicity stunt. I can assure you that they do not and are totally dismissive and will make up feeble excuses to justify how badly you are treated and try to convince you that it is perfectly normal and does not qualify as creating a toxic work environment. Fortunately you are not under any contract to stay there and have the freedom to run quickly in the opposite direction.

Prior to coming to the Springs, her previous nursing home kept her heavily medicated, and she was not even able to function or communicate with us. Your different approach, which required more effort, attention, and true compassion woke her up for us, and even in the week before her passing, we were able to have loving conversations with her. We really appreciate the special care you provided for her, thank you for your extra efforts and kindness... I know she was not an easy patient. I came into the facility expecting the worst, but my experience with Alexis and Shana completely changed my perspective. From the moment I arrived, Alexis was incredibly accommodating and helpful. She helped me locate my mother and even assisted me in finding my mother's phone without any hesitation or frustration. Her kindness and willingness to help immediately made me feel more at ease. Shana also stood out with her positive and upbeat attitude. When families and patients are going through difficult or stressful times, having someone with that kind of energy and compassion truly makes a difference. People staying in places like this really need to encounter staff members like her. Meeting both Alexis and Shana genuinely eased my mind and gave me comfort about my mother being here. Their care, professionalism, and kindness deserve to be recognized.

They went above and beyond for our mother in their communication with us and care for her. After our mother passed, they offered us their theater room for her celebration of life, accommodating all of our needs for our event making sure the residents were able to attend and all of our friends and family were welcomed. As my sister & myself both live outside the state it was very comforting knowing she was well cared for With people that truly loved her.

The residents aren't walking around like Zombies. They're smiling. Interacting!! Having fun! My mom is currently at a spot where not many residents are mobile. Where by 6pm it's a ghost town. And where the staff (minus ONE amazing staffer,) just doesn't care about the residents. It's pretty and new there but there is no warmth. No LIFE. Here at Merrill Gardens, there are so many activities that they have to print it on 11x17 paper and even then, the days are STACKED full!! They have two working vehicles for transportation. With two smiling drivers (Robert and Bob...no joke!) There are daily movies, bingo and bridge and coffee club and crafts and so so much more!! There's margarita Monday and Wine Wednesdays. Friday is a special cocktail hour. They want to get people together and having fun. And they do. And have I mentioned the food? It's actually really good. They have a menu. And a BUNCH of chefs and two restaurants. And 18 servers!! Oh and the staff. Have I mentioned them?? These people with smiles and hugs and WARMTH. All wanting to make it truly HOME for these people. The new leadership of Melissa Ubiles and Karla S bring a warmth, kindness and levity that was missing from Merrill Gardens. I'm so excited to move my mom to her forever home and to have these wonderful people taking care of her!!

This is specific to Memory Care wing and staff. We moved my…read moreparents from Touchmark to Merrill Gardens- we liked the double rooms and sunny outdoor space. We came during the transition from Ackerly and it was difficult, especially on the business side and I am not completely satisfied on that front. Invoicing and ACH has not matched and caused agitation. Monthly texts for proper communication and documentation has continued until just recently (6months). However, I only have great things to say about the memory care unit and staff. They've been stretched, they've pushed and they have been dwindled. However, the staff continues to be amazing. The managing director, Emily, is fantastic. She's worked double time and double responsibilities since our arrival and always has a smile on her face. Med techs are fantastic, personal attention and communications - throughout our residency. Recent additions of new social activities staff: Michelle and Stefana has been incredible. The two work with residents in groups and independently. They reach out and include family members with texts, emails and photos. They have implemented new practices. It has been amazing. Recently they hosted a surprise birthday party for my mother- serving her favorite things, pizza flowers and decorations. It was amazing. I love the personal attention the staff brings to the unit. Fresh baked goodies, dressing my parents up for occasions- including curling hair and makeup. They truly seem to care. I'm so happy we moved. I'm not always around and when away I am confident my mom and dad are in loving hands.
