Dominic is gone and this place has gone through some growing pains since it was sold, but has bounced back in my opinion. The former owner was brought back as a cook and I think he likes that just fine while not having to worry about everything else. The guys who answer the phone could use some etiquette lessons I'll admit. Half of the time they don't even say "Vinnie's Pizza!", I have to ask if it is, like last night. Seriously, whoever answered around 5pm, you sounded stoned or something! Two pieces of advice, 1. Call before 9:30pm at night, otherwise they will answer the phone but won't take any orders. They close at 10:00pm and like to be out of there pretty close to that. 2. Make sure to tell them NOT to overcook the pizza. They have a tendency to do that every so often, but I still like it enough to give it 3.5-4 stars still! Jumbo slices of tasty pizza starting at $15. We ordered half toppings without any issues. The ham and pineapple were cooked deliciously on one side with pepperoni and onion on the other. Vinnie's definitely does not skimp out on the toppings but there were instances where four or five pepperoni slices were stacked on top of one another. The biggest difference other then Dom not being behind the counter spinning his magic have been the upgrades new ownership has made, Vinnie's is now open Sundays, they now take credit cards and other then the EVERYDAY SPECIAL of 2 Lg Cheese Pizza for just $15.95 they now offer a Special M-W of two Medium Pizza's for just $10. Vinnie's also offers a great price for Pizza Parties on order with 4 or more Pizza's Vinnie's still prides itself on hand rolling their pizza dough, they still use the same ingredients, recipes and make two different sauces for their food, imagine the idea of getting a Pizza and a Pasta Dinner or a Meatball Sub and tasting two different sauces. I grew up in Charlestown in the 50's where Del's Pizza truck ruled the streets and Joes Pizza anchored City Square. Outside of the European in the North End, we enjoyed the best. The pizza is ok. Thin crust. Of all the pizza shops in my area I will say this is the better option as far as price/taste. Tonight we get a calzone ( italian cold cut), not our first from here and now they are chopping up the cold cuts teeny tiny. Before they used full slices of cold cuts. Now the meat is swimming away leaving some pieces with only one type of meat and some with more.. it's not a great idea IMO. Doing this also makes the calzone flat in appearance so your pretty discouraged from the moment you set eyes on it. I asked for some sauce to be put IN the calzone prior to cooking since this is how we prefer it and got a big ole "No we don't do that here". Well excuse me, I wasn't aware the customer can't make reasonable requests at your establishment pertaining to how they would like their food prepared. I know this would not have been a complicated task to put a scoop of sauce inside when making it, yet they weren't into it I guess. I missed this place alot just walking on the street. But do yourself a favor and pay attention next time you are near the area and happen to be on Salem st. The pizza is very affordable and cheap, and quality is infinite times better than your typical pizza chain (Dominos, etc.). The pizza tastes fresh and homemade. Their subs are great too, again fresh and homemade taste. I hear they have good pasta as well but haven't tried it. The staff is also great and they have daily deals for the frugal restaurant goers. I'll start by saying I don't expect a lot from Malden pizza shops--having lived in this area for almost 7 years, I have yet to eat any pizza from a shop in Malden that didn't leave me really lacking. Enter Vinnie's. This place was unexpectedly fantastic. We had a greek salad and the white pizza. *All* the ingredients were fresh. The peppers and tomatoes were crisp and tasty--better than some standard grocery store fare. (I'm actually curious where they get their produce, because it certainly was a step up from what I'm used to in Malden.) The feta cheese was also nice and firm--it's so common to get something a little watery or rancid. The crust was also just perfect. Just an all around very satisfactory eating experience, and very pleasantly surprised. And the comments from other customers about the friendly atmosphere is true. Just nice people. Hands down best pizza and I stand by that, I live right down the street and get a hot pie in about 20 minutes. I'm almost 21 and can't remember not having a couple of hot slices a couple times a week and seem to always have a Vinnies pizza box empty on my stove! Nothing around here compares, never has, and in my opinion there are no good pizza joints around here anymore but this place will continue to shine I hope for at least 20+ more years and then some! Still in love with this place after being introduced to it 2.5 yrs ago. Dom is gone, but Vinnie is still there every day and is as charming as ever. The new owner is also really friendly. I've only recently ventured off the pizza menu to get the Italian Sub with a little oil & vinegar, pickles, and lettuce. The bread was so soft and fresh. Being the hometown pizza spot, it's hard not to know the owner, who manages to remember every face that walks in and always greets you with a smile and a story if you have the time. I've been going to Vinnie's Pizza for longer than I can remember, and the pizza has not changed one bit. That fresh from the oven slice never disappoints and I've been known to hound my friends for days with the phrase "hey let's go get a slice" until I finally get my way. If their delicious pizza wasn't enough they have a pretty large menu and are easy going about particulars in your orders. To this day, I can still walk in and order a Damien Special (steak & cheese, lettuce tomato, mayo) and Dom knows what that means--a throw-back reference to a sandwich he named for my older brother's friend over 10 years ago. Like I said, it's the hometown pizza spot that keeps you coming back for more. With few businesses surviving more than a few years in that area, Vinnie's has outlived them all and remains a shining example of how to do pizza and keep it friendly, fast, and most importantly affordable ($14 for two large cheese pizzas if you pick-up, all day, everyday). read more
