Quality not quantity? These guys have so many sandwich options that for one it's hard to decide what to get, and 2, some of the sandwiches fall flat on the flavor side of things. It bothers me that their chicken cutlet is cut into strips..no longer a cutlet and microwaving them makes it soggy. Alright enough negative..Cannot go wrong with their turkey and bacon on a hard roll, roast beef, or tuna. Tried and true are my go to's here. I like that all their products are from the USA. The cookies are massive and delicious, especially when plucked right off the hot sheet pan. Check em out for your self..certainly a Wallingford institution. read more

Looking for a lighter meal I stopped for a dinner salad, the description of the ,"Italian salad " sounded good for $8, However it was nothing more than a soggy, cold, bland piece of diced and breaded chicken breast,1/4 of a thinly sliced tomato that lacked both color and flavor, 4 to 5 slices of cucumber w/ the skin, and about 1/4 of a head of iceberg lettuce! No actual greens worth eating! On the positive side, it was fresh lettuce. That's about all the good I can say about my $8 salad. read more

Vinny's is certainly my go-to place when grabbing lunch. There's such a variety of original sandwiches, that you could honestly spend a good five minutes deciding on what to order. I've found that Viinny's makes the best tuna I've had. I prefer the #16, the "Sorry Charlie", which is tuna on a hard roll with bacon, lettuce and tomato. Delicous. I'm also a big fan of their turkey salad, which has cranberries and walnuts mixed in. Throw it on a hard roll with some swiss cheese and it's sure to satisfy. Another thing about Vinny's, they pack your sandwich! Other deli's you may visit can sometimes leave you feeling jipped. Not here. If anything, you won't be hungry for dinner after having one of their sandwiches. Vinny is often seen working the register or simply chatting with the customers. He's an extremely nice guy who happens to run the best deli in town. read more

I liked the feel of this place. There are signs all over the restaurant about buying American. Strong political feelings for a business sometimes turn me off, but being a small place like this where you can see the owner working the cash register, it was fine. Anyhow, the menu was a bit difficult to follow. My husband just wanted to try their "famous" roast beef and wasn't sure how he should go about ordering it. I wanted to make sure I had my roast beef heated since I'm pregnant and won't eat deli meat unless it is from a reputable place and is warmed up (even still I've only had it twice since being pregnant - this being my second time). We ordered our sandwiches after much heming and hawing and grabbed some drinks from the fridge. My husband tried Vinny's home made rootbeer. He said it was pretty good. The sandwich was definitely really fresh but it was pretty dry. Mine didn't taste heated after I had asked for heated roast beef. My husband said his tasted kind of warm. My sandwich was supposed to have ranch on it but I couldn't taste any ranch. The cheese and meat themselves were delicious but I never found the condiments (and I like tons of dressing) and I didn't find the tomato until halfway through the sandwich. They should do a better job evening everything out over the entire sub. It was definitely good tasting though despite its flaws, and a very big sandwich at that. I took half of it home! I would try this place again but I don't know that they are the best deli in the area or that there is anything spectacular about their roast beef. I do like the small and family owned vibe to the joint though. I just wish their sandwiches blew my mind more than they did. read more

I have lived in Wallingford for over 30 years. In those 30 years I have driven by Vinnie's thousands of times but never stopped because because the continuous construction always made me concerned about parking. BIG MISTAKE ON MY PART. My husband and I went there this past Friday just on a whim. He has been there often. There is plenty of parking in the back if there is not any in the front. So now I know. I love bacon, lettuce, and tomato subs. I always get them wherever they are available. I have never in my entire 60 plus years tasted a BLT that was loaded with as much bacon and just the right crunchiness. I will be back. And it will be soon. Seriously, just the best. I don't care how busy they are, you are greeted like family by the staff (including Vinny himself), the food is consistently awesome (try the #54; it is what dreams are made of, but the rest of the menu is dynamite- and I've tried almost all of it!!), there is a proud emphasis on made in the USA, and the entire transaction is just perfect from start to finish. Just moved here from Montana. So I know beef, and apparently so does Vinny. The roast beef was spot on...Moist, tender, and beefy. And don't get me started about that horseradish sauce. My wife never had horseradish before and after she had a bite of my "serenity" her eyes lit up and she said, " I have never FELT anything like that before."... It rocked her world. Anyways, My wife and I each got a sub and our jaws dropped when we saw the size of our sandwiches. Let's just say we didn't eat dinner that night because we were still stuffed. Been there a few times and all times-food is just average. Certainly not worthy of a Best in Ct. anything- or a special trip. What is more annoying is their coupon offers that send out and try their best to avoid honoring. You don't discover you've been robbed until you are out the door. Don't send out coupons then. Vinny's is ok - I don't love it. The sandwiches are average (for deli's around here anyways) and the salads aren't great. I was especially unimpressed with the baby spinach salad. Their roast beef is good, but I feel like that's really the only thing that stands out at all here. read more

OK, let's tee this up. I am a CT/Hamden native living in CA. Recently married, I took my husband back to CT to visit. He has heard all about East Coast Pizza, Italian bread, cannoli, and all the other local food 'finds'. He couldn't wait to try an Italian style sandwich. We decided to try Vinnys as it was close to where we are staying. I couldn't wait to bite into a hot, dripping with sauce, meatball or eggplant sandwhich on a thick, crusty italian roll. I should have known better when out of the 3 reviews, the 2 highest were more nostalgia based then the most recent Yelp review, which was by far the most accurate. The service was poor, but we did takeout so that wasn't a focus. I ordered a meatball and eggplant sandwhich. The eggplant was mostly breading but not greasy at all. The meatballs were meaty and tasted OK. The bread was a dissapointment, I could have bought the rolls at any local supermarket. Plain old white bread in the shape of a roll, about as soft and bland as a marshmallow. In their defense, the food was fresh, and they did have some unique combinations, a definate wide variety. We also ordered a salad but declined it as it was very small and overpriced for the portion size and ingredients. Overall, this is your basic, grab a quick lunch sandwhich place that is perfect for the local comunity but not representative of what good Italian deli's would porvide. read more

I was bombarded on Facebook by Vinny's (in a good way) about all of their giveaways and promotions for free stuff. I had to say that Vinny posts A LOT on FB, but the promos really get you curious. Anyways, it had been YEARS since I visited , and I was probably only 13 the first time I went so who knows what I could remember. I loved their HUGE sign (hard to miss) and billboard which made it very easy to see. We came in and only ordered a sandwich to go and come on, I had to get the Roast Beef!! It was DELICIOUS. SO incredibly packed with food, coleslaw and Monterey jack cheese (see menu I forgot the name) and the counter help was so friendly, a nice young high school aged girl. I did not see anything look dirty or out of place, even after looking on the back "line" where they prep food. The young girl and her helper (a younger teenaged boy) were wearing gloves and all of their staff had their hair up/away from their face (this is huge to me). I also wanted to comment on other reviews I have seen about this place being "too much" or "gawdy" or "overbearing" I completely disagree. This guy Vinny and or whoever owns it clearly has a lot of pride in being American, as you can see displayed tnroughout with pictures, posters, and plaques. If you do not like that he purcahses everything AMERICAN made, maybe you shouldn't be in this country, or how about just eat the really good food and STFU! :) Just saying!!! Let's give this guy some credit that everything he buys is made in AMERICA where AMERICAN'S have jobs!!!!! Let's go people! Now go there and get some roast beef it is freaking DELISH. read more

Have been here more than a few times and the food is generally pretty good but as others have noted, average in taste and quality. Last visit I got their daily 'special' which was a turkey sandwich. The turkey tasted like stale lunchmeat that had been left in the fridge for a week, I emailed a comment form about it but they never even bothered to respond. Normally I'd give this place 3 stars but following the non-response I think that's about all I need to know about their customer 'service'. Absolutely delicious roast beef sub & freshly bottled root beer. I got extra horseradish sauce on my sub and it was one of the best I've had in CT. I hate that most subs use cold cuts that are slimy - not the case here. My husband has been working across the street from this restaurant and the owner, Vinny, has brought him and his crew cold drinks on hot days and brought them fresh cookies to bring home to their families. He has no reason to do this other than the fact that he's a stand up guy. I've only had the pleasure of meeting him once but I have to say he is the kind of person you want to give your business to. Drove by Vinny's Deli on Saturday afternoon. On my way to another destination I couldn't help notice the insane restaurant store front sign. The Giant Roast Beef Sandwich that is sculptured in a 3 D Visual Movie Prop above the door of the deli. I continued to my destination 7 miles away and was starting to feel hungry. I looked at the other available options and said no way, I am going back to that Giant Roast Beef Sculpture Deli called Vinny's Deli so I hopped back into my car and drove back 7 miles to Vinny's Deli. Thank God I did, the best roast beef sandwich period!. I introduced myself to the owner and told him the only reason I came to establishment was that if anybody could spend that much money on the best insane restaurant sign must have the best food possible, he thanked me and asked me to tell his wife what I just told him who works with him by his side which I did. I was very amazed on how busy this place was because it was after lunch to begin with and they had a line out the door. Vinny knows all of his customers by name and he has a great personality for greeting all his customers. I aked Vinny about that Giant Roast Beef Sandwich and he said he had it manufactured out west and had it shipped to his deli, its very impressive and its the only reason I stopped. I like this place a lot and have been here a few times. Roast beef & orange barbecue sauce is great, if they give you enough of it. My biggest complaint is that the quality of the sub depends on who makes it for you; it varies by person. Salads, incuding potato, etc, are small, expensive, and average. Don't think they are the best deli around (having a lot of choices doesn't automatically make you the best!), but do think roast beef is great. Parking is horrible. Small lot shared with other businesses, and it's an unpaved mud hole with pot holes the size of craters out front. read more

Just tried this place for the first time and was very disappointed. I'm not sure how they got the title of roast beef king when their roast beef is soggy and flavorless. The grinder I got had way to much bland roast beef with a very small amount of ranch and cold bacon. I'm very disappointed! Definitely won't be going back!! read more
