    Italian on a roll
    Dan R.

"Rosalita, jump a little lighter Señorita, come sit by my fire I just want to be your lover, ain't no liar Rosalita, you're my stone desire" (Bruce Springsteen) We love Italian delis, and Rosa's is a pretty darned good one. When you walk in, be prepared to choose among hot and cold sandwiches, pastas, salads, soups, desserts, breads, stuffed breads, groceries, catering, and pretty much whatever you want to fill your belly with Southern Italian goodness. One more thing to prepare for when you walk in is a warm welcome from Rosa herself, one of the most adorable characters we've met in a while. Seriously, she was that fantastic. Rosa founded her namesake's deli in 1981 as a family business, and the Wallingford institution is still going strong over 40 years later. Her store was busy yesterday, as we joined a small crowd of walk ins and regulars picking up their phoned in orders. We bought three items that totaled $27.88 - a ham and cheese sandwich on a roll, an Italian combo sandwich on a roll, and a huge spinach and sausage stuffed bread. We each had half of the sandwich for lunch yesterday and will polish off the other halves today. My Italian combo was very good in all respects. The roll was very fresh, the quantity of meats was above average, the pepperjack cheese was great, and the lettuce, tomato and onion garnishes were fresh and plentiful. We dug into the stuffed bread tonight and the two of us shared half of it for dinner. It was a pretty good-sized portion of excellent bread, tender spinach and savory sausage crumbles. All in all, we had a wonderful customer experience at Rosa's deli!!

I went here for lunch for the first time . I have always wanted to go but I have never been in the area for lunch time . It's a very cute Italian deli for take out. I ordered the eggplant parmesan and added fried peppers on a hard roll. This was amazing! Most places do not make eggplant right however, the sandwich was excellent. It was thin enough and enough breading and the sauce tasted great as well. I would definitely come back just for the eggplant. I also ordered the #6 fresh mozzarella with tomato and roasted peppers, pesto, balsamic and I added pickled eggplant. This tasted great as well. I got my husband a fried breaded flounder grinder. it comes with lettuce, tomato cheese and tartar sauce. He doesn't like tartar sauce, so I had mayo on it instead. He stated that the fish was fresh and tasted good however, it didn't have much flavor. He felt that he would want flavor in the breading in order to order it again. Overall, very happy with the lunch order and definitely would go back..

    Cut up chicken

I've had several sandwiches here and all have been very good. Today I had a chicken parmigiana sub. The bread is the same on all subs and is good. The sauce is tasty with the right amount of tang. The cheese is plentiful and tastes like good quality. My only objection today is the "cutlet" while good was cut up pieces , I prefer whole cutlets and it was microwaved so it made it slightly mushy. Rosa's is a really good option for a $10 lunch in Wallingford.

    Real Italian- needs more meat

It's okay. I really want to like this place and have given it numerous chances but every time we do get something we are disappointed. It had been a while so we came back today and got the #3 chicken cutlet and the real Italian. Chicken cutlet here isn't crispy, which is a must for me and my husband. Good flavor but not crispy. The real Italian had one slice of each meat. I couldn't even taste it. My daughter got a turkey wrap with just turkey and cheese that looked good. So guess you just have to stick to the basics here.

    Chix and pastina soup

Visited here for the first time the other day, but my mother has been raving about this place for years. Good selection of meat and cheeses for slicing and sandwich making along with hot dishes, soups and salads. Glass case has a great selection of pasta and other salads, stuffed breads, frozen pastas, and some scrumptious looking sweets and desserts. They also have pignoli nuts! I opted for a large chef salad to go along with a bowl of chicken and pastina soup. Although I requested Swiss or provolone instead of American cheese, the salad was made with American. I easily replaced it when I got home and there was enough for 2 generous salads. The soup tasted of homemade goodness with large chunks of chicken and simple ingredients. Service was so friendly and fast! Seems like a great local place that has a lot of loyal and frequent customers. I will definitely stop in here again when in the area.

Soggy, what looks like microwaved chix cutlet

Was expecting good things...asked for my sandwich to be on a roll, got a full grinder which I just accepted (was told, it's only a $1 more...Paid $12) 'Chicken cutlet' looked soggy, microwaved. Bad experience ordering, sandwich made it worse. Sorry...

It has taken me way too long to write this review, but I only recently started reviewing some of…read morethe places I've loved over the years, and The Eatery absolutely deserves one. When I lived in Wallingford for about three years, The Eatery became one of my places. I would stop in for breakfast before work, or someone from my team would make the breakfast run. At least once a month, we had to have an Eatery morning. We ordered lunch from here too, so over time this little place became part of our routine. When I eventually left Wallingford, my team actually bought me my last breakfast sandwich from The Eatery before I left. It sounds like such a small thing, but it was honestly bittersweet because they knew how much I loved this place. And years later? It's still just as good. One of the biggest reasons The Eatery has always stood out to me is the customer service. Everyone I've encountered has been sweet, polite and welcoming, but I especially have to mention Sam. Over the years, she became one of those people who made you feel like more than just another customer. She genuinely got to know her regulars. There were times I'd place my order online and it felt like she already knew I was coming. I'd walk through the door and she'd have everything ready. She has always been incredibly kind, caring and attentive, not only with me, but with the customers around her as well. That kind of customer service is something you remember. My son has been eating their food since he was around one year old, and he STILL loves it. Now whenever we're back in Connecticut for his appointments, my mom will ask, "Can we please stop at The Eatery?". Sometimes we're able to make it and sometimes we're not, but this past Friday we finally did. I ordered my favorite kind of breakfast: a bacon, egg & cheese on a pretzel roll. SO GOOD. The pretzel roll with the warm egg, bacon and melted cheese is such a perfect combination. My mom ordered her bacon, egg & cheese on ciabatta, and my son had one as well. Although apparently his wasn't enough, because he ended up stealing mine. Apparently Mom's food always tastes better. I also tried what I believe was their watermelon mint refresher/tea, which was refreshing and perfect with breakfast, while my mom had a caramel coffee that she absolutely loved. And please don't think they're only a breakfast spot. Their lunch is just as good. I used to order their salads all the time during work, and they were always incredibly fresh. In fact, my coworkers were notorious for wanting some of my salad because they knew where it came from. Everything always tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared rather than like something that had been sitting around. Another thing I love is seeing how much this place has grown. I remember what it was like when I first discovered it, and coming back years later and seeing what they've created is wonderful. They've added so much personality while somehow keeping the same warm feeling and the same wonderful people. The atmosphere is adorable. It's bright, clean, modern and welcoming, with tons of beautiful greenery, hanging plants, warm wood tones, woven light fixtures and fun pops of color. The big "Hello Wallingford!" mural is such a cute touch. There are little details everywhere, but it doesn't feel overdone, it has that relaxed neighborhood café feeling where you can grab your food and go or just enjoy being there. I also love how they change things up for the seasons and different occasions. They always seem to have something fun going on, especially around fall and the holidays, and I believe they offer catering as well. Funny enough, before I discovered The Eatery, I had driven past it so many times without realizing what I was missing. Once I finally stopped in, it became somewhere I went for years. If you live in Wallingford, you need to try this place. And honestly, even if you're coming from North Haven, New Haven or elsewhere in the area, make the drive. It's worth it. I may not live in Connecticut anymore, but whenever we're back in the area, The Eatery is still one of those places my family wants to stop. The food is delicious, the ingredients taste fresh, the atmosphere is beautiful, and most importantly the people have remained just as kind and welcoming as I remember them. Some restaurants are simply places you eat. The Eatery became part of my memories of living in Wallingford, and that's probably the best compliment I can give them. Keep telling them they need a second location in another state! Everyone deserves to try how amazing they are

Everyone that had the Pizza thought it was a very good. Side of french fries was very large. Two kids devoured it by the time I got to take a picture. My sister enjoyed her angel hair and Alfredo sauce as well as they both enjoyed the soup. Super salad comes with your dinner and as you can see, the soup was very large. My husband had a house salad, and he added blackened shrimp, which came with a good amount of shrimp, avocado, raisins, and almonds. He liked the salad very much. I ordered a special the gnocchi with marinara sauce, and burrata . Overall, the sauce was very good, but I disliked how much sauce was given. For me, I felt like it was too much sauce and my pasta was swimming in it. I would request less sauce the next time I go. Overall, the price was not bad at all. We all enjoy our meal and every single one of us brought food home. Oh, on the sidenote, a good amount of their soups are made vegetarian. This is difficult to find so if you are looking for a vegetarian soup, they told me the escarole and beans, pasta, , pasta fagiol and the lentils were all done.
