We recently spent some time in Portugal and I was so excited to see a Portuguese wine on the specials board that night! This place is literally Mecca for any beer or wine nerd and Heavenly playground for someone who is both! It takes a lot to impress on both the beer & wine fronts and this place has managed to do the impossible! First off, fantastic selections for both wine and beer! And, what had me when I walked in the door is they are fairly priced; you will not find prodigious "pretentious" snobbery markups here, huzzah! Aside from bottle & cans, they offer wine by the glass and beer on draught; again fairly priced on quality. I became smitten w/this place because they will let u try before u buy w/both the beer and wine! Nice wine bar in the aboredum area. There is plenty of shared parking and they sale beer. The beer selection is extensive and you can get packs or single beers. The prices are decent and the staff is friendly. The food is pretty good. We had the pizza spinach and goat cheese was tasty and the arugula salad with chicken was plentiful. There is a television. To start with, Saturday nights here are cool beans. Or should I say "cool cats". Because it's when the cool jazz cats come out and belt out some rhythm and blues. If I'm not doing much, I drop by and order a small bite and a pint. Plenty of humdrum noise to read to and wait until the jams start. There is a huge list of beer - 20+ taps if I recall correctly. To-date I haven't been denied a beer because some tap ran empty. Lots of variety from all over the state and the country. Nevermind that this is also a bottle shop. That being bottles of both beer and wine. There's both indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of it. Conveniently a cigar shop is next door if that fits your drunken fancy. Prices are honestly a bit high but I guess that's just them taking full advantage of the clientele in the area. Food quality isn't bad either. Staff has always been relaxed, polite and friendly. We discovered the rich, white, 50-something Mecca last night and it is called Vintner's Wine Market! Seriously, folks. I've never seen so many middle-aged, wealthy white people crammed in one place. The Arboretum is a strange, strange place. Vintner's is pretty much the same concept as Common Market, Good Bottle, Bulldog, etc. just plopped down in far South Charlotte. If you put this same shop in Plaza Midwood or South End, the crowd would be SO different. Anyways, I digress. Let's talk about the food and alcohol, shall we? An impressive wine selection lines the walls of the entire shop. They also have 15+ taps of craft beer, which was our picked poison for the night. They'd recently had an Allagash tap takeover, so 5 of the beers were from the Maine brewery. No complaints here, I love the Allagash Dubbel! Ted found a couple IPAs he was happy with. As we explored the shop, we were also thrilled to find the motherload of Burial cans and bottles. I suppose the Arbo crowd doesn't realize what a treasure trove they have in their back yard? I'm talking Bolo, Surf Wax, Hawks Bill... Cases and cases of it all. We took home a few sixers. After a couple beers, we needed a snack, so ordered a few cheeses and the salami sampler. It really hit the spot. They really have some super cheese selections! Be sure to try out the Sottocenere Black Truffle and UAV Smoked Mozzarella. Mmmmmmmm! read more

For what they are trying to be, this place works. Don't show up here expecting someone to wait on you. I wouldn't have even realized they had food unless I saw some pictures and references on Yelp. Its more like a craft beer place. You have to go to the bar, and order. I had to ask, "Do you serve food?" At which point they pulled out a menu from under the counter. They have an excellent selection of cheeses. The cheese plate comes with nuts, olives, grapes, grape jam, and crackers. That was awesome and the cheese was excellent. They have some good wines by the glass, and they have store full of unique wines if you want to just buy a bottle. Perhaps the complete surprise to me, was the great selection of on draft craft beer. Noda, Triple C, Sycamore, Wicked Weed, OMB, etc. They also have a huge selection of bottled craft beers. Lastly, we ordered a flat bread pizza, their "most popular one" according to the menu, and it was fantastic. Once you get your drink from the bar, you find a seat, and they bring the food out to you. That's the most attention you are going to get. But the atmosphere is relaxed, clean, with great wine, craft beer, and solid cheese/flat breads. So, if you want a casual place to hang out for a drink in Arboretum area, I don't think you are going to beat this place. The bar is quite small, but there are tables and some patio seating as well. The shop is always clean and mostly well organized. The service is hit or miss. They can get busy, especially on weekends, or if the is a singer or band playing. The people are friendly, just not as attentive as they could be at times. It is a fun place to try a beer or two, listen to some music or just hang on the patio on a nice evening. read more

I have heard good things about this place so I figured that I would check it out for myself. Located in a strip center, it is easy to overlook with all of the other nondescript shops. The place has a small European boutique feel. More focused on wine than beer, they still have a very respectable beer selection. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. All of the beer is priced as singles, with the prices clearly marked, which is a huge plus. The selction is quite extensive, if fact it may be as good as Brawleys in that aspect. I think the biggest draw is the bar with around 16 taps, all of them devoted to craft. The draft prices are fairly reasonable, but the bottle prices seem a little high. Overall, this is a terrific place to come have a couple of beers and buy a hard to find bottle or two. I think Brawleys may still have the edge for my normal everyday purchases, but this is a nice place to have a beer while shopping. read more

Joining my dinner group for some drinks before the holidays at Vintner was a great idea. This was my first visit here, and I am definitely sad to say that. The location (size) can be deceiving from the front, but upon entering you will notice it is a lot larger than expected. The walls are covered in wine and beer, which can be bought to enjoy in the store or to take home. We arrived at 6:30 and gathered a few high tables. Between the 8 of us we definitely had a mix of beer and wine drinkers. From what I heard everyone enjoyed their choices, as I did. They have two chalkboards on the wall outlining the daily beers and wines by the glass. The only thing to note is you must walk to the bar to place your order, as there is not a "real" server checking on the tables. It is somewhat a bonus, especially for larger groups, as you can run your own tab, pay by the drink, etc. without a lot of confusion at the end of the night. After a while several of us decided to check out the menu. Our group ordered a variety of items, charcuterie, sandwich and flatbreads. All were great and I thought the prices were definitely comparable to other locations in the area. I had the chicken pesto pizza, which was so good! Vintner definitely impressed me and I will be sure to hit this spot again when I am in the area. read more

My favorite local beer and wine place. Locals are great (including me) and the staff is fabulous. It's laid back and isn't uptight like so many other places around the Arboretum and Ballantyne. Food is awesome and refined. Order salads, cheese plates, flatbreads, guacamole and so much more. Go in when you are chill. You can sit at the bar, high tops or tables- they will even accommodate groups if you call ahead. If the weather is good you can sit outside. A cigar bar is next door and you can smoke and enjoy an amazing beer from their large selection of craft beers or share a bottle of wine. Personally I like the local vibe. I don't mind ordering food, waiting a bit, walking to the bar to order and all of those things that make it unique, friendly and comfortable. I've been to Vintner many times now, but for some reason haven't Yelped about it yet. I've noticed the folks behind the bar favor their regular customers - meaning if you're new, you're not going to get service for a while. Even if you're standing at the bar. This kind of irks me, but now that I've been enough times for them to recognize me, I think I'm moving up in their little world. But I don't think any place should treat new people like that - service gets 3 stars. Now onto what I do like...it's close to home, $5 glass of wine specials (red or white), great selection of draft beers (usually see the Charlotte breweries represented well), tons of choices by the bottle if you're looking for something special. They also have food - the queso dip is amazing, the hummus equally delicious. We've tried the wings which I believe are from a local farm - they were on the smaller side, but tasty. They also have flatbreads and you can create your own cheese and/or meat board. They have seating inside at the bar, at some tables, a couple couches and they also have tables on the patio. But the sign says "Order at the bar only" - I think I've seen people getting table service before, but I'm sure they are the regulars ;-) Overall, I would give 3.5 stars if I could, but I'm going to round up since they are supporting local farms and breweries which I'm a big fan of! read more

They have a "corking fee" for any bottle of wine purchased to drink there. And a similar fee for any beer can or bottle beer. With that being said, the prices are still very reasonable. I almost don't want to review this place, as it's a quiet and unassuming place where you can usually get a table or barstool right away - but credit where it is due. And if it gets busy, they deserve it. This place is super chill, with a widely varied crowd from young hipsters to older folk, all enjoying craft beers and fine wines. The menu is small and eclectic, and we have yet to find anything we didn't like. Also love the package goods function: like a beer? Buy one or a growler to take home! Like a wine, take a bottle home! Service is somewhat lax, something of a "come to me, 'cause I'm not coming to you" vibe, thus the 4 stars, but while not explosively great there is nothing to complain about. read more

It is more of a "self serve" service so do not expect anyone to check on you. You have to go up to the bar and place your orders. What an exciting new find. The Vintner Wine Market is not just a place to buy wine it is also a place where you can grab "small plate sharing dishes" and drink a bottle of wine with a few friends. If you're looking for a place with tons of sit down service and fancy dinners this is not your place. BUT, if you looking to relax, crack open a bottle of wine and share some delicious appetizers this is the place to be. And that's just the type of scene I was looking for last night with a few of my gal pals. I had never been to the Vintner Wine Market and honestly I thought it was just an upscale place where you shopped for wine. What I discovered last night was that this place is not only a wine shop ... it is also so much more. It looks like a fancy wine store inside with scattered tables and a bar in the far right corner. When you walk in, go to the back bar and ask for a menu. That's where you'll place all your orders and you'll leave a credit card with them till you're ready to check out. It reminded me of my college days where you'd go to a bar/restaurant and have to do the same thing. Main difference was this scene was much fancier. So for the grown up who still likes to feel free this is your place! We decided since it was so hot out to go down the white wine route. The three of us started off with a bottle of Edgebaston "The Honey Pot" 2011 Sauvignon Blanc white wine. Mmmm this wine is delish. Here's some info about that particular bottle that we stated out with straight from some wine site: It has a lovely yellow green tinged color with a brilliant reflection of light. Nose of Papaya, melon and litchi. Palate is smooth and creamy with soft, tropical fruit notes of papaya, litchi and mango and ends with a fresh, long finish. Well, anyway that bottle was so refreshing and easy to sip it magically turned into a second bottle ... this night was turning into quite the adventure. Luckily we had the husbands drive us over so we could really kick back and have fun. Along with our gossip and wine we ordered some small plates to share. Here's what we ordered: Pimento Cheese Plate 7 your choice: regular, jalapeño, or hot habanero with warm spiced tortilla chips (We got this with the jalapeno option and loved it) Margherita tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, garlic confit, fire-roasted tomatoes, basil (The flatbread pizza was excellent and had a sweetness to it from the fire-roasted tomatoes - it was downright yummy) Olive Plate 2.5 (The olive plate was just straightforward and exactly that ... olives - it was perfect for what it was) We should have probably ordered more food but instead we ordered more drinks and some sweets. The sweets we requested were: The Secret Chocolatier Naturally Infused Truffles 2.5 (YUM! I love dark chocolate and these truffles were homemade - I only had one and now that I'm thinking about it ... I want more!!!) Plus, we all got a glass of red wine to sip with the chocolate truffle at the end of the night. After we split the bill three ways it came to around $39 dollars a person with the 20% tip already factored in. It wasn't cheap but also it wasn't "gasp expensive" for the caliber of experience we had. It was a really fun night and a totally laid back atmosphere. You can sit and sip all you want without any pressure. If you're looking for a night to just get out of the house and be in great company with whomever -- go here. This place is warm, welcoming, friendly and the staff is hilarious. They are located right next to a cigar shop, so there is often someone smoking a cigar on the patio. Go inside and find a table, put your stuff down and then order at the bar. Everything is ordered at the bar, do not ask the staff to wait on you - that's rude. You order and wait for your drink, they'll bring you your food. This place is obviously the neighborhood favorite, it's always packed. But in the way that there's always a seat too, you know what I mean? Stacey and her crew are wonderful to talk to, so feel free to grab a seat at the bar. This is a tight, friendly, take no sh*t ship. They have daily specials, and the dry rub on the wings is amaze-ing! They'll toss them in buffalo too if you prefer that. What an awesome idea this wine market has! I had no idea what I was walking into, but I was pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend and I decided to come here last minute because a friends dad was in town and his brothers band was playing at the market. First of all, awesome band! I'll have to get the name so next time they play here you can mark it on your calendar! The name of this place pretty much says it all, this is a wine market! Wine everywhere, from everywhere, all over the place. I loooove wine so this was great! They also had beer which my boyfriend throughly enjoyed as well. Not only did they have drinks, but this "wine store" had delicious food also! The menu was fun and different! The store has wine all around the outside and tables on the interior and a patio. You can go select your wine and take it to the counter and order some delicious food. Or check out the specials - they are listed near the bar in the back. You can stop in for a drink here or you can get a few bottles to take home. Great socializing - it is a neighborhood spot. There were some couples on dates and larger parties when we went. The staff was super nice and the food came out fast. I think we got a few apps which were great and complimented the wine. Vintner Wine Market is a cozy space to relax and pick out a great bottle of wine or beer (no liquor). Great selections of wine, from the inexpensive to hard to find vintages. But what you may not realize is the amount of specialty micro-brews they carry. Great selection in bottles as well as on tap. Great place to have an excellent beer after work and catch up with friends. Many Sunday afternoons you'll even find the 'Beer Club' hanging out & sampling interesting micro-brews. I've learned much about beer and wine on every visit. The food is excellent. Much better than many bars that serve larger and more varied menus. There is definitely a base crowd that is usually there so it can be slightly uncomfortable sitting at the bar when the staff neglects you. Makes me feel like I'm not welcome sometimes even though I'm there once a week. If I wasn't there with a friend, I probably would have left several times. Don't judge a book by its cover..... I anticipated this "Wine Market" to be the type of place where you go in to buy a bottle or two and walk out. You can, but it's really much more than that. Not really a true bar, it has a cult-like following as a neighborhood gem. ~10 tables. A few outside tables. Roughly 20 craft beers and ~10 wines by the glass available. Most of the time, you have to order from the bar and then sit back down (depending on how busy the serving crew may be). Staff are VERY knowledgeable re: wine/beer tastes and alcohol content. Witty and interactive but not pushy. I guess the part that impresses me most (besides the bar-like environment in a market), is the food. They have a flatbread that is phenomenal.
