This was a completely impromptu visit but I think I found one of my favorite places! I was visiting the nearby Bohemian Wine Bar with my girlfriend, and she was dismayed that they were out of this hard ginger beer she really enjoys. One of the employees informed her that The Hop Shop is owned by the same owner, and has it on tap! So we decided to take a walk over and visit. I had heard of this place tucked away behind Moo & Brew but had never visited which I now realize is a mistake, and I have been missing out. They are part bottle shop and part tap room, but more than that this place feels like a welcoming and chill neighborhood hang out. There was a live musician singing and playing guitar of both covers and some of his original tracks. There was a fluffy dog hanging out in one the chairs like he owned the place. They have several seating options from large wooden tables to soft plush sofas, even some swinging couches hanging from the ceiling. The walls are vibrant and full of murals, and the whole space just feels alternative but still approachable and not pretentious. In other words this place seemed very much at home in Plaza Midwood one of the coolest neighborhoods in Charlotte. We ended up staying far longer than originally planned just because we were loving the vibes. I can't wait to visit again. read more

Looking for a chill local hangout to enjoy lots of local beers, wines, ciders? Look no further! Came here for a pre meal drink with friends on a Friday night. It wasn't busy at all and we had our pick of seating. Cool swing seats are located next to the bar as well as plenty of couches and comfy seats. I ordered the blueberry cider from red clay and it was amazing! There is art for purchase on the walls everywhere and the bartenders were nice/helpful. Downside: parking can be difficult, but try the street parking or spots in front or the lot behind by moo and brew. read more

Just attended another Wine Tasting Night at HopShop and once again, it was amazing! If you don't make the first Tuesday of the month for the wine tasting, you can always get a reasonably price bottle of wine curated by the GM, Tamara, and there's always a yummy beer on tap. As a former doggy dad, it's very pet-friendly for all the well-behaved doggies. I've lived here In Plaza Midwood for just under 4 years and it's one of my top "go to" places. Relaxing old world meets new Charlotte. I was born less than a mile away. Moved away and now I am back after 25 years traveling the world and serving. This place felt old and new Charlotte all at once. Reminded me of a grown up version of the Graduate from back in the 90s. The bartender Peace(sorry spelling) was perfect and made me feel so welcome as she recommended perhaps the best non alcohol brew I have ever had. I won't tell you what it was, just talk to Peace. The Hop Shop is close to where my girlfriend lives - dangerously close in fact - but far enough away from all the hustle and bustle of Plaza Midwood. It's conveniently located in a more residential area along a strip of shops that were strategically placed behind Moo & Brew almost certainly to draw in the nearby residents in need of an evening bottle or two. You can wander in casually and peruse the shelves of more unique beer varieties and even some wine offerings. There are also a few upright coolers with different bottles on ice. They have a great open and spread out feel here and also regularly bring local small batches on tap. The couple that owns the place is very friendly and interactive. Prices run in about the same class as most beer specialty bottle shops with the same stuff on offer. Ample seating with a couple of couches mounted to chains as indoor swings. On nice weather days they open up the back patio for some fresh air chillin'. I'm already a regular! read more

This is a really fun place to visit. They have a ton of cans and bottles available for purchase plus a bar with craft beer drafts and wine by the glass. The price is typical for the area--and the service is always great. I've never gone in when it was very busy, which allows for the bartenders to spend time with each customer. The Hop Shop is a great place to get a beer, relax, and even play some games. I met up with a friend who lives in the area for a drink on Friday before going out for the night. It's a cool garage vibe, with about 10 beers on tap and a large selection on shelves on the walls. There are a variety of beers from different breweries, some from CLT breweries and some that I've never heard of before. The staff is very friendly and will let you taste a couple samples if needed before you decide on the beer. When I had trouble choosing from the samples, I described the type of beer that I liked to the bartender and he chose a great option (that I can't remember now :) .) Like others have said, there is a lot of comfy seating, including the couch swings, and a plenty of games to play along with drinking your delicious beer. You also get a high five if you pay with cash- which is pretty awesome. Overall, a great spot in Plaza Midwood with a good selection of beer, great staff and a fantastic vibe. This place is super legit and you won't find better customer service than the owner Patrick. Incredible selection of beers to buy and take away, as well as a nice selection of constantly rotated taps. The spot inside is nice and has a good feel to it, plus you gotta love the swinging bench/couch things. With all the beer drinkers in Charlotte, this place is an excellent addition to the neighborhood. Yeah there is some construction in the area, but a delicious hard to find draft beer should help you forget about all that. The Hop Shop is a hidden gem, and more people need to check this place out! It's kind of tucked away on Central next to FuManChu Cupcakes. I went to FuManChu on Sunday and then walked to Hop Shop to have a beer and enjoy my cupcakes. At Hop Shop, you can purchase beer and wine individually from the coolers or you can get something on draft. I tried the Goose Creek IPL, and the bartender even let me get a half pour because I just really didn't want a full pint. The place is pretty open with comfy seating and fun swings suspended from the ceiling. I love the "Don't swing like a dick" sign. Cool, laid back vibe that feels like a cross between a coffee shop, lounge, wine bar and craft beer place, and they are totally dog friendly on the inside which was a nice bonus! Bartender was very friendly, knowledgeable and patient while giving suggestions and offered free samples for us to try as we debated what to pick. She was a great example of what customer service is all about and she exuded an enthusiasm and passion for her job which is rare in today's day and age. The Hop Shop is a great addition to this little strip of businesses! It's the perfect place to stop after a boozy cupcake from Fu Man Chu Cupcakes! Inside has a nice casual feel - they even took an old love seat chair and turned it into a porch swing style couch which is really cute. Overall they have a decent selection of bottled beer and wine and has probably 10-15 beers on tap. The main reason why I am giving a three star is because their tap board does not usually match what they post on Facebook. I have gone in twice now because they said they had a Legal Remedy beer on tap but to find that it really wasn't there. In their defense, I do think they go through Kegs pretty quickly but I would love a more current list on social media! read more

I love the Hop Shop. Huge selection of beer, wine, and ciders to carry out, some chilled. They have beers from all over the place-- I recently found a new favorite brewer they frequently stock from San Francisco. They rotate their drafts and wine by the glass and always have "out there" options that I almost always enjoy. The owner is a great guy to talk to, and if you're with friends you can enjoy one of the board games they keep and sit on their swinging couches. I highly recommend Hop Shop! read more
