    The wine tasting tonight!

Just attended another Wine Tasting Night at HopShop and once again, it was amazing! If you don't make the first Tuesday of the month for the wine tasting, you can always get a reasonably price bottle of wine curated by the GM, Tamara, and there's always a yummy beer on tap. As a former doggy dad, it's very pet-friendly for all the well-behaved doggies. I've lived here In Plaza Midwood for just under 4 years and it's one of my top "go to" places. Try it out, you won't be disappointed if you like a cool, chill place with great wine and beer with a friendly staff!

Lots of Trappist/Belgian styles on offer here. A great way to get buzzed quick without even realizing it!

The Hop Shop is close to where my girlfriend lives - dangerously close in fact - but far enough away from all the hustle and bustle of Plaza Midwood. It's conveniently located in a more residential area along a strip of shops that were strategically placed behind Moo & Brew almost certainly to draw in the nearby residents in need of an evening bottle or two. You can wander in casually and peruse the shelves of more unique beer varieties and even some wine offerings. There are also a few upright coolers with different bottles on ice. They have a great open and spread out feel here and also regularly bring local small batches on tap. The couple that owns the place is very friendly and interactive. Prices run in about the same class as most beer specialty bottle shops with the same stuff on offer. Ample seating with a couple of couches mounted to chains as indoor swings. On nice weather days they open up the back patio for some fresh air chillin'. I'm already a regular!

This is a really fun place to visit. They have a ton of cans and bottles available for purchase plus a bar with craft beer drafts and wine by the glass. The price is typical for the area--and the service is always great. I've never gone in when it was very busy, which allows for the bartenders to spend time with each customer. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and they are able to help find you whatever you're in the mood for. The best part about The Hop Shop, the indoor porch swings! But like the sign says "Don't Swing like a Dick!"

Biggest tip here... "Don't swing like a dick". They have two indoor patio-style swings which are really cool, and they also advise you to swing responsibly. Great place to go find your next favorite beer. A lot of their options you won't find at your local watering hole. Also a lot of take home options in coolers. The large rolling garage door in the back allows for fresh air and enjoyment of the weather as well.

I've been coming here since they opened. Great place to relax when you don't wanna be around tons of people. Great beer selection, friendly staff. Knowledgeable staff at that.

One was a small side Caesar salad which I got. I was disappointed in the continuing practice for restaurants to charge for small changes like this within informing the customer. Waitress was very nice, however and attentive. What is also quite unique about the restaurant was that you could order small 4 oz beers, just for tasting at $2-3 each. The place is quite large and must get incredibly noisy at times with the hard surfaces and multiple TVs. There is an option to sit directly at the bar or at tables.

If you are looking for recommendations, I highly suggest trying: The Meatballs: A fantastic twist on a classic, served in a delicious lemon dill sauce instead of a typical marinara. The Sliders: Perfect pulled pork paired with fried green tomatoes and a tangy horseradish sauce. They also feature a highly creative and unique cocktail menu. Two of my personal standouts are the Beetle Juice, which incorporates fresh beet juice, and The Fishbone, which brilliantly highlights their house-made aquavit. Overall, it's a wonderful spot for a great atmosphere and an inventive menu!

I replied and was super excited... then they ghosted me and never gave me a date. Then I applied for Charlotte Idol - my friend did it last season and all my friends were telling me to do it because I also sing. I've been paid for college shows and done plenty of performances - so not to toot my own horn but I know I can sing. They emailed me AGAIN for this event saying I was perfect and to send a photo and snippet of me singing and then they would email me next steps aka what date I would be. You guessed it I sent my photo and video and then crickets... ghosted AGAIN. This time I said enough and I replied to them via email after a few days and again NOTHING. Super humiliating and unprofessional to continually reach out to someone, get them excited, I told ALL OF MY FRIENDS, and then you don't give me dates. It's embarrassing I hate to admit but I want other people to know what I've experienced so the same disappointment doesn't happen to them. Luckily I have the best friends in the world and we all will be boycotting Open Tap after being frequent attendees especially for their events!

That was just half a day in, so naturally, I started feeling like Charlotte had passed me a note, "I like you, stay longer." The one thing I failed to respect was the Carolina summer sun. I desperately needed a hat. Sure, I could have gone to Target or the bike shop I passed earlier, but any civilized man knows the best place to buy a cap is a brewery. Untappd pointed me toward one of the most popular breweries in a city full of popular breweries: Burial Beer Co. Since I was driving, I kept things responsible and sampled taster-sized pours, spacing them out with non-alcoholic mocktails and 0.0 beer like a grown man who still wanted to remember where he parked. Burial also offers cocktails, ICEEs, low-ABV session beers, THC beverages, wine, and self-serve water. The menu helps you navigate the offerings with color-coded sections: cocktails in blue, light-bodied beers in neon green, dark ales in orange, and high-ABV options in pink. Food isn't available onsite, but delivery gets the green light. I grabbed a corner seat at the bar, not because I wanted to brood, but because the post-brunch crowd had arrived in full force with babies, buddies, and dogs. Every bartender and guest I spoke with treated me like I had wandered into a neighborhood clubhouse instead of a brewery. They gave recommendations, bought me a drink, and one even helped me pick out a hat. Southern hospitality is alive and well at Burial Beer Co., a place that turned a shopping trip into a welcome party, proving that Charlotte knows how to beat the heat with good pours, good people, and better merch.
