A special shoutout to Chef Benel -- the food was on point! ‍ Because of my fitness journey, I tried to keep my selections somewhat disciplined... but Chef Benel made that difficult. I had the jerk chicken, steak, pasta, and roasted potatoes, and everything was flavorful, well prepared, and worth every bite. And there was still plenty more to choose from! Unfortunately, my eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach. So I already know I'll be back to finish what I started. Great food, great atmosphere, and great hospitality. Food is amazing! My 2nd time ordering from there, but my first time eating in the restaurant. I had the fried red snapper (delicious) with beans and rice. She had griot and black rice (diri djon djon). We both had passion fruit juice (slamming), and shared the Mac & cheese (off the chain). I came here for a Rum and rodeo brunch. The brunch was $60 per person and they offered bottomless rum punch and mimosas. There was a special menu for the brunch. I enjoyed the appetizers the most. I got to try the Haitian Patty Trio and plantain cups. For my main course, I got the chicken and waffles. The waffle was very dry and I don't know about y'all but I love my waffles drenched in syrup but the Crispy Haitian-style fried chicken was so yummy. The smoked herring pate blew my mind it was everything i had hoped it would be. The herring was flavorful and paired well with the flaky pate. Nice hint of spice. The black rice blew my mind, the sauce was outrageous too. The plantain cups with vegan vegetables didn't taste vegan. Plantain was soft and by juicy and flavorful. Delicious. Loved the huge portions of the fried snapper and fritay platter was a great way to try almost everything. The cabbage is spicy, fresh and outstanding. Get the desserts. With the prices they're charging, we sure ain't in Haiti anymore. This place is on the expensive side. Expect to spend at least $30 per entreé. They have a small but efficient menu. I ordered the Lambia (conch), which was delicious, but the portion served was not worth $38, IMO. Of all the menu items, I think the steak would be the best bang for your buck at $30. The goat was great as well. I have no problem paying good money for great food, but I think the service should have the same energy. The food came out extremely slow last night, and one person didn't get their food until all of us were done eating. To be fair, we had a party of 8 people, and it looked like a small kitchen. So, I can understand the challenge of serving a big table. I personally would've rather have the hostess split the table into two to help the kitchen pace the food better. Hatian food is pretty hard to come by in this area, so I want to see Bettie's do well! They have great food and an intimate atmosphere. I think this would be a fantastic date-night spot! Would definitely say stick to small parties of less than 5 people when dining here. read more

I took someone to Bettie's yesterday and ordered the Fritay platter along with patties. When I called ahead, I asked if they had a dozen (12) of patties and was told yes. A few seconds later, the person on the phone changed their answer and said they didn't have a dozen but could do 10 instead. I agreed and asked for the price, and she said $13 for 10, few minutes later she called back and said "we only have 6 patties left", I said ok, we're on our way. When we arrived, they had the audacity to tell us that per each small oven-baked patty that's usually sold 3 for $5 costs $15. On top of that, the $60 Fritay platter was completely disappointing and not worth the price, at all. The worst part was, they served the food as if nou vin mandé. Between them trying to get over, outrageous pricing, this place is a hard never again for me. read more

Looks can be deceiving... please do not visit Bettie's in Jersey City. What's funny is the whole time I thought the name of the restaurant was "Betiz" (Haitian Creole for joke) but that's exactly what they did with the food! Three of us - 2 adults 1 child - came in on a Sunday an hour after they opened so we were the only party there. I'm not too familiar with Jersey neighborhoods, but this neighborhood was quite sketchy. But the decor is moody, dark and very Instagram-able. For starters we got the Plantain Cups trio. The chiktay one was flavorful, but the griot one was bland, which should have been a clue of what was to come. For entrees my nephew ordered the seafood pasta which was really tasty, and interesting considering it wasn't a Haitian dish. My cousin and I shared the fritay platter (pictured) and we were so disappointed. First, it was served without akra or pikliz! The waiter said it was on the way. Thirty minutes later the waiter comes with the akra but says they didn't have any pikliz!!!! What type of Haitian restaurant doesn't have pikliz?! That's like an American restaurant without ketchup or a Mexican restaurant without salsa! The griot was bland. At minimum the griot should be seasoned with "sel, piman, acide, epidasit!" (Salt, hot pepper, acid). There was none of that in there, which means the pork was not even cleaned. No salt on the plantain either. The akra was too salty, and the thicker ones were raw in the middle. The waiter tried to give us a "hot sauce" to substitute for the pikliz ... turns out it was a sos kabrit (goat) which didn't even make sense with the meal, and all the fat started caking on top by the end of the meal. The rice and fish were good. The whole service took 2 hours, and only one other party came in after we did. It seems the waiter was the only employee, host, waiter, busboy, and maybe the cook! It didn't help that he wasn't Haitian, so I don't think he understood how the food should have been prepared or served. Pretty place, horrible food, slow service. Don't be fooled by the aesthetics. read more

My boyfriend and I wanted to end out trip to jersey city with some early dinner and we landed at Bettie's. We had a hard time finding parking and was looking for at least 10 minutes so expect to have to make a couple rounds then when we got to the restaurant, im not sure if we had to make a reservation but we waiting an additional 5 minutes before being acknowledged, but once our waiter came from the back we realized that he's the only one and he is increadbly kind and Knowledgeable about the menu. The place is designed in a beautifully with a luxuri feel it would be a great place to have a dinner party if the parking wasn't such hell. This is a BYOB and they do not have diet soda incase you need that. We started with the pate which for $11 I wish they were bigger but they are delicious and the okra that was fresh and delicious. For our entree I had the frittay platter and he had the macaroni with lobster. Both were delicious, I ran into an issue with my red snapper but it was fixed immediately and was delicious. We arrived to eat, but were informed that we couldn't dine inside due to a party reservation at 7 PM. Although my companions suggested we order takeout, I hesitated, but they convinced me to go ahead. That turned out to be a huge mistake; the food was inedible. After the server took my order and payment, I never saw her again. We waited 45 minutes for our food, which was so disappointing that I almost contacted my credit card company. Always love trying a cuisine I don't get to have to often and the HAITIAN-CARIBBEAN inspired menu at Bettie's has me hooked!! The vibe is perfect for date night and perfect for exploring this menu! Highly recommend trying out the Plantain cups filled with 3 delicious diverse meats including ground beef and a delicious pork and get the Pates filled with herring! A must try is their Lalo - a west African traditional dish served with crab and goat along with rice and black beans! I can't say enough great things about Bettie's Restaurant! We recently rented out the space for a surprise birthday party, and it was absolutely perfect. The owner and chef is not only amazing in the kitchen but also a fantastic event planner! He went above and beyond to help make sure everything was set up just the way I wanted. And offered extra resources to help with anything else I wanted, he truly made the process so easy and stress-free. Now, let's talk about the food... WOW. We had four appetizers and eight entrees, and just about every single dish was a big hit. The standout for me was the bouillon--it was hands down one of the best I've had. The Haitian patties were the highlight for me too--flaky on the outside and actually perfectly filled with great flavor. And the herring plantain cups? Absolute must-try. For entrees, I think my favs would be the seafood pasta, the quail, and the diri djon djon... they were all soo good! I found this place to be great for a girls' night, date night, or private event. I was so excited to see that a new upscale Haitian restaurant was opening up in Jersey City right around Father's Day/ my dad's bday. I don't think he's ever been to a fancy Haitian place before and he enjoyed it so much! After an initial issue with our reservation (they fixed it and offered us a discount as well) we were able to rebook for the next week and finally go. Chef Benel and his staff were very warm and friendly. He even offered to move his car if we couldn't find parking. What a gem! My dad loved speaking with all of them in Kreyol and felt right at home. First of all, the restaurant is gorgeous. From the lighting to the plates and seating, every detail is beautiful and well executed. Even the music selection, a mix of old and new kompa and calypso was fantastic. The food was great. Very balanced flavors and not overly salty or oily. We only tried the fritay platter but it was more than enough food for the two of us to split. I wish there was sauce on the side for the griot so maybe I'll ask for that next time even though I know fritay doesn't usually come with that. Bettie's is BYOB but there's a liquor store nearby if interested. We had ginger tea which I'd pass on next time just due to how small the portions are. Only things good about this restaurant was the music and the fact that it's BYOB! Other than that... horrible! Service was terrible. Waiters were all over the place either confused or just didn't know what they were doing. They kept messing up our orders and some of what we ordered never came to the table. They even allowed some of us to order the fritay platter, but when it came to the table without the fish they simply said "there's no more fish", failing to say this before hand or at least giving us the option to choose something else from the menu. A few entrees came out before the appetizers which was also ridiculous. Wait time for everything was bad! Everything from being seated to waiting for food took entirely too long. Waiter had asked if we would like wine glasses, took them 45 minutes to bring something out, and it was champagne glasses. Glassware in general didn't seem clean- looked foggy or with finger/hand prints all over them. To top it off, the ceiling pipes started leaking dripping water on our table, in our food and drinks!!! Not sure what water was in those pipes which was very close to the restrooms I must add! Although they removed my plate from the bill and gave a small complimentary plate, the damage had been done and I was completely over it!!! Disgusting, unprofessional, and ridiculous. Even when it came to providing hookah which is shown on some advertising videos, that too was disappointing. Excuses went from we won't give hookah right now because we have to make sure no one has any lung issues, to there's a couple of kids in here (understandable). But when we were pretty much the only ones there they then said well no because we have no charcoal! This restaurant did a great job with advertising but I wish I had looked more into the reviews as I see so many others before me also didn't have a pleasant experience. I attended dinner with my gf. This was our first time trying Haitian food. Aesthetics: 4/5 nice décor, small and intimate Service: 3/5 need to work on custom service, people were complaining about wait times (to be seated and food). I had to ask for silverware. Just expect slow service when they're busy. They're basically still new and everything I listed can be corrected going forward. This gem in Jersey city deserved a multiple visits! Food was amazing. The legume was top tier, the plantain cups were great as well! I can't eat Pattie's often because of a wheat allergy so this was allergy friendly :) my favorite was the ground beef cup, second was the herring. I loved the stewed chicken and black rice as well! My only thing is I wish there were more veggie sides to add! It's BYOB and there's 2 liquor stores within 1 minute walking distance so my partner went and got us some delicious red wine. We didn't know it was BYOB so thank God there are places to buy alcohol nearby or else I would have been disappointed. Overall, love the food. The food is alright, but definitely not among the top 20 Haitian restaurants that I have been to. Don't go there thinking that you will be satisfied. Be prepared to wait for 2 hours after being seated while the waiter or waitress dance around with the DJ before your food comes. At least an hour of preparation. Overall the service is shit. Be prepared to have your clothes smell like cigars. Because people are smoking cigars inside of the restaurant. Never going back !!! read more

Lakay se lakay! beautiful restaurant with authentic Haitian food! The service was top tier. Me and my sister we greeted with smiles and tentative service during both of our visits. Happy Hour on Thursday was lit ! The music was a vibe and we really enjoyed the custom platters that allow you to get a taste of many things from the menu. The next time I went we did the Fritay platter which was delicious! The Pickliz was perfectly spicy. As a Haitian woman myself I must say the food might be better then my moms! My overall experience was absolutely terrible. Their display of dishes on social media is what drew me to this restaurant. Despite being informed of a negative experience that my close friend experience, I went against her recommendations and attempted to try this restaurant anyway. First, we arrived on a Thursday around 7pm (they open at 5pm), the restaurant was essentially empty and one other table was being served. A waitress came over and served was water when asked to order a juice, I was made aware that the establishment did not have juice because they didn't have a chance to stock up. While I knew this location was BYOB for alcohol, I was hoping to try some of the tropical juices on the menu. Appetizer/Happy Hour: After my friend and I left to go purchase a bottle of wine, we looked at the menu and asked about Happy Hour. The waitress didn't appear to have much knowledge about Happy Hour and the timeframes on when it started and ended. She proceed to state that "the kitchen doesn't want to do happy hour now". When asked to speak to the chef or the owner who was probably in the kitchen cooking, the waitress came back and mentioned that the kitchen now agreed to proceed with Happy Hour. We ordered a 6 item platter and received the 4 item platter options. When the waitress was asked about the other item that were supposed to be on the platter, we were told "the kitchen said everything is here" when in fact if she was aware of the menu she would be able to see that we were served the 4 item option. After much back and forth I stated that she needs to assure that we are charged for the 4 item option instead of the 6. No one from the kitchen came to rectify the situation by giving us what we ordered or by even checking in to see if we were satisfied with the appetizer. There appeared to be a HUGE language barrier between the waitress and the individuals in the kitchen. I saw the owner walking passed our table and he didn't even check in with us after the incident. There were a total of 5 customers in that restaurant incIuding myself and my friend therefore, it was evident which table had the discrepancy. Overall the fritay platter was delicious but again we didn't get all the items we ordered and we had to settled with what the kitchen was willing to serve. Dinner: The food was okay, I had lambi and djon djon. I really love black rice however, the black rice served was tasteless and the lambi lacked flavor. The haitian flavor I was looking for was lacking tremendously. Payment: I was surprised that there was a service fee for bringing in our own wine/alcohol and a surcharge for paying with a credit card. It was astonishing because I initially wanted juice and was essentially had to purchase a bottle of wine because the restaurant lacked supplies. It's also ludicrous that a restaurant would charge their customers a fee to use a credit credit. The esthetics of the restaurant was satisfactory however their customer service and follow through was unpleasant. After this experience, I will no longer be bamboozled by social media marketing/advertisement again. read more

I had reservation for 9:30pm I didn't get seated until 10:28pm. There were people coming in after me who didn't have a reservation who was seated before me. It seemed as if people who knew someone that worked there were seated first. We waited about 15 minutes for a server and another 10 minutes just for water. My boyfriend asked for sauce and an extra plate 3 times and never received it. The food was very mediocre and very overly priced. There was a band there that seemed to just be practicing. I drove all the way from New York and I most definitely won't be returning or telling my friends about it. I hope everything gets better ! read more

Bettie's is a quaint restaurant tucked away in Jersey City. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and sat right away. Carlos, our waiter, was friendly and very attentive. He answered any questions we had and didn't hesitate to explain any dish that we were interested in. My in-laws ordered the Kabrit and liked it alot. I ordered the steak and it was cooked perfectly medium to my liking. The owner came over regularly to make sure that we were enjoying our meal. I would give this place a 10 if I could.
