Todays visit was our third to the Virginia Diner and it was by far the best, though our earlier visits were great too. My wife and I both got the the Country Fried steak (again) because it was wonderful last two times. My grandson got the Gunslinger Burger. Our waitress, Caitlin was excellent and brought everything promptly. The presentation of the country fried steaks is a bit plain but the flavor could not be better. I did have to send my mashed potatoes and gravy back to be heated but Caitlin came back with a fresh replacement which is so hot I couldn't eat it. And this time they were as delicious as the steaks were. The green beans were also well seasoned and the biscuit that came with the dinner was superb. My my grandson's burger was clearly juicy, and so big he couldn't finish it! For dessert, I got the chocolate chess pie and my wife got the peanut pie with ice cream. The chess pie was a bit too chocolatey for me, and so my chocoholic wife and I swapped. We both loved our new choices. This is probably the best country food restaurant I've ever eaten at. I hope to repeat today's experience at the Virginia Diner many more times in the future. read more

Don't fall for the advertisement. We were visiting Virginia Beach and surrounding areas from Texas and since there is so much construction on 64 we had to take a diff route. We were looking for a place to eat and and since there ain't much to choose from in the area we decided to stop. Once we sat down which didn't take long we asked for a few mins to look through the menu. Our waitress just took her sweet time. When she finally came back to take our order she was just plain rude. A friend of ours didn't want her eggs runny. Instead of the waitress saying "I suggest over med or over well/hard" she just kept rolling her eyes and making faces. The place wasn't really full maybe about 10-15 people and most already had their food. So once we ordered our food it took forever to come out. During the whole meal I'd see other waitresses asking tables if they needed more coffee and what not and our waitress barely came around and never once asked if we needed refills. Now to the food part. I got some egg and ham breakfast with a side of cheesy grits. Ive never had VA ham and since I saw it on the menu I said why not? IDK how y'all eat this ham it was like eating spoonfuls of salt I was regretting adding a bit of salt to my eggs. The "cheesy" grits were not the best. I was expecting cheesy grits not just cheese over grits. I did finish it all considering we still had a ways to go to our next stop and the meal wasn't cheap. On Sunday during my weekend excursion I tried this famed Virginia Diner. I arrived shortly after 9:30 am. For the cleaning crew - Please make sure you have operating soap dispensers on the ladies room. I was seated promptly and within a few minutes my Diet Pepsi arrived. The menu is extensive and not wanting breakfast I was hankering for a BLT with regular tomato's not the fried green ones the menu listed. It took about 10 minutes for my food to arrive. My fries were delicious perfectly crispy and plentiful. Forgetting during ordering to ask for extra mayo I was given 2 yes 2 mayonnaise packets. Talk about generous.... My sandwich had so much lettuce I was about to ask for dressing but chancing it would arrive in tiny packets I bit my tongue instead. Removing a huge portion of the lettuce I dug I to my sandwich. $14.00 for a BLT is mighty high and sadly it didn't live up to the cost. 2 strips of bacon per side and 2 slices of anemic tomatoes so thin you could read the Sunday paper thru them! Sad. Cutting my losses I finished quickly and didn't stiff the waitress as it wasn't her fault the kitchen can't make a proper BLT. If your down this way don't get caught up in the allure of this place and do what I'll do in the future drive pass and eat a Cliff Bar instead on the way to get where you are going . What a comedown! This Diner has been a highlight of our drive to VA Beach from the mountains for years, but the service today was slow and the famous ham biscuits used overdone biscuits. I've driven past Virginia Diner many times over the last 4 years, since it's the way I used to take to get to my daughter's school. Well after her college graduation, we decided we should finally stop in and enjoy a meal. I called ahead of time, since it was about 7 of us, to see if there would be a long wait. The first girl I spoke with told me that they wouldn't be able to accommodate us and then put me on hold. Either the call disconnected or she hung up but I called back again and thankfully, the lady that answered told me that they'd be able to accommodate us with no issues. Once we arrived, there was a table available for us so we were seated right away. The staff were very friendly. Once we put in our drink orders, we were able to enjoy the buffet or order from their menu. We all decided on the buffet. The buffet included fried chicken, fried catfish, greens, green beans, potatoes, corn, ham, deviled eggs, a salad bar, brisket mac & cheese, lima beans, carrot soufflé and desserts, among other things. The food was delicious!!! I'm not a huge buffet person but the food was seasoned like a southern person was back there making it lol! My family thoroughly enjoyed their meals and we all went back for seconds lol. It did take some time for the server to refill our drinks but they explained that they were short staffed so we understood. The buffet is only open on the weekends, I believe, but it was only $19.99! Can you believe that?! If I lived closer, I would probably go to Virginia Diner once a month lol. The restaurant was very clean and the dining area was very spacious. The restaurant includes a nut shop when you walk in, so we all were able to grab a few different types of nuts before leaving. If you're in the area, definitely stop in! I had the chicken salad with shredded country ham on a croissant. It was very good. The onion rings as a side were also good, but they only gave me 4. My friend got the grilled chicken salad and said it was good. We were with a tour group of 42. They were expecting us. They had one waitress who served the entire group. We were there for over 2 hours. They just could not handle the group and one person never got their food. Our tour director complained to the manager who gave him a "smart" answer, saying they were under new management. He later came back and apologized. I haven't been here since the late 80s and nothing has changed. The buffet of good southern food is still there and it's still drawing a crowd. The ice teas are huge and you will leave stuffed. I even had the chef check if the food had MSG in it. On our way home from Virginia Beach today we stop by the famous Virginia Diner for lunch! Virginia's highway system took shape during the 1920s as automobile ownership expanded rapidly. State Route 52 was established in 1928 to connect Suffolk with Prince George County. In 1933, this road became part of the new U.S. 460 from Roanoke to the Chesapeake Bay. The highway was later extended to St. Louis, Missouri, but its western terminus was eventually fixed at Frankfort, Kentucky. To accommodate travelers' needs, entrepreneurs opened gas stations, motels, and cafes along the roadside. Among these was the Virginia Diner, which D'Earcy and Laura Davis established here in 1929 inside a refurbished Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad car. Growing up in Virginia, I've heard about Virginia Diner for as long as I can remember. I've always associated it with their famous peanut products cashews, and all kinds of flavored peanuts. So, walking in, I had high expectations. To my surprise, they had even more exclusive peanut flavors than I knew existed. That alone was impressive. I visited with a large family group about 18-20 people we had already prepaid for the buffet. I later learned you can also order from the regular menu, which is good to know for future visits. The buffet had several dishes that made my country-bumpkin heart happy. I really enjoyed the beets, macaroni and cheese, and greens because the flavors I haven't had in a while. However, some other items could've been a bit more elevated. It's also been years since I've been to a buffet, and the overall style did give off a more old-timey vibe, which may appeal to some but felt a bit dated for me. One major highlight was the service. Our waitress handled our large group beautifully from helping us cut our cake and serve ice cream to making sure everyone had what they needed. Her warmth and attentiveness truly made the experience memorable. Overall, I'm glad I finally visited Virginia Diner, but the old-fashioned buffet style isn't quite my speed. While driving by we seen the sign for world famous peanut pie, so we decided to get a slice to go. The staff were friendly, fast and efficient. The pie however was a bit disappointing. It was like a pecan pie, swapping out for peanuts. The flavor was very good, however the pie filling was scarce and texture was peanut brittle. The plastic fork AND knife would not cut it. We finally had to pick it up and eat it with our hands, a messy task to say the least. As a chef, and foodie, I definitely can make this 5 star worthy and for that it was worth the stop. read more

I was on a return trip from Richmond to Norfolk , late afternoon and I was starving. I've been here before and it was ok so I figured what the hell. They had a $20 AYCE buffet that they were about to start breaking down, it was filled with things like fried chicken and a chocolate/vanilla pudding and other stuff. I ordered the open faced roast beef sandwich that comes with mashed potatoes and gravy, a biscuit, and I ordered the carrot soufflé. My little brother ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and candied yams and hush puppies. I LOVED the gravy. It is a beef gravy that was not too salty but was so flavorful. Pair that with what is probably the best mashed potatoes I have ever had... YES! The roast beef was so tender and topped with more of that delicious gravy. The carrot soufflé was pretty good, not as sweet as the one I used to love at (*shows my age*) Piccadilly. The biscuits were just a classic biscuit, perfect for dunking in the potatoes and gravy. The meatloaf was pretty darn good and again, covered in that delicious gravy. The yams were good too, really cinnamon and sugary. The hush puppies were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and delicious. This place opens up into a cute little shop that sells Virginia Diner peanuts and such, which is a pretty big deal around these parts, judging by how many shops I see selling them. The restaurant looks like a classic cafeteria/diner. Clean floors, ample space to walk, and plenty of friendly people. Everything about this place was a hit and a miss. Great staff, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Tiny and uncomfortable chairs crammed too many into the area. The food followed the same pattern of a hit and a miss. I ordered the south BLT with fries. The BLT was great, fried green tomatoes were a nice touch. The fries were cold and from a bag. I recognize my favorite brand anywhere! Spouse ordered the chili dogs - the dogs were smoked with a toasted bun and gooey cheese. The chili leaned too heavily into the ketchup and tasted like it came from a can. The tots also came from a bag and were cold. Son got the country fried chicken with potato salad and onion rings. The onion rings looked homemade and were tasty. I can't speak on the rest because of the dairy. We grabbed some cookies on the way out. Peanut butter, lemon blueberry, and salted caramel. This is where they shine. The cookies were fantastic. Overall impression is that this is a sold food spot if overpriced. It's typical diner fare that should be cheaper. I suspect they've cashed in on their Diners, Drive ins, and Dives publicity to price gouge. Not sure I'll return because $80 for the amount of food we ordered was excessive. Yesterday I made a special trip to try the Virginia Diner. It's 90 minutes from my home. I was anticipating a good experience, and I have been wanting to go for a few years now. I do want to mention that I'm not one to leave bad reviews, I normally make the decision to not go back if I'm unhappy with my meal or service. I do understand everyone has bad days and I've taken this into consideration as well. My husband and I were so incredibly disappointed that I felt the need to leave a review. I even waited until the next day because I didn't want to do it while I was angry. When we arrived, it was obvious the employees were having a bad day. We waited a few minutes for someone to acknowledge us and the others that came in behind us. Several employees walked back and forth passed us and never said someone will be right with you or even hello they didn't even make eye contact. We felt invisible. Finally, a young lady walked up raised her head to look at me and said, "How many." The look on her face let me know she was annoyed. I said, 2 please and she asked for a name. That's it. It didn't take long to be seated, maybe 5 minutes. I didn't realize there was a buffet, until we were being seated and it seemed like most people were eating from the buffet. I should have gone with my gut and left because at this point, because I felt like it wasn't going to get any better. I went against my better judgement and my husband, and I opted for the buffet. The waitress asked what we would like to drink. When she came back with my diet pepsi, it was flat. Not a bubble in it. While I was making my plate my husband asked her to replace my pepsi with water and let her know something must be wrong with that flavor or the machine because the soda was flat. The buffet is on the small side. When we went up, there was no lettuce at the salad section of the buffet. There was banana pudding and chocolate pudding that we knew we wouldn't eat because, it was runny. There was a layer of liquid in the pans of pudding. They offered fried chicken (breasts only), beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, baked chicken, meatballs, fried fish and fried pork etc. I've had better food in hospital cafeteria. I was so disappointed. The waitress came out and gave the table next to us one biscuit for the 3 people sitting there and then left one biscuit on our table and said, I expect you will share. She didn't say they were in the process of making more and will bring them out. She said we are out. Our waitress seemed a bit off, slow and maybe a bit disoriented. My husband out of concern asked her if she was ok. She went on about her back hurting and pain meds, and we empathized with her because I've gone through the same issues and understand her pain. She was nice, but she wasn't, "present" and made sense when she said she was in pain. At this point in the meal the bad service coming into the restaurant, the overpriced mediocre food, the flat soda the runny pudding. It was enough for us to know I would never come back and instant regret for even stopping. I didn't even mention the flies yet!!! It seemed like as soon as we got our plate, an army of flies came to our table. They were sitting on our table and flying around tables next to us. My husband looked at me and said, "have you ever seen this many flies inside a restaurant?" No, I haven't. It was just too much. We didn't even have an extra napkin to cover our one biscuit sitting on the table. When we asked for the bill, we received someone else's bill and had to sit there with the flies at the table and wait until our waitress had time to bring it to us. Maybe they were having a day that nothing was going right. I don't know, but I will never go again. I don't understand the good reviews on here; I didn't see any evidence of the wonderful food, or good service others have mentioned. I feel like we paid for the image of a restaurant that used to be there a long time ago. We were even charged for the flat soda. lol. This place is ok. As other reviewers have expressed, it has changed over years. We had stopped here approx. 12 years ago and we can see how it has expanded, refreshed and taken on more of a retail business. It does not feel as hometown as before. The southern driven menu has something for all. My wife ordered the BLT with potato salad which also includes a pickle spear. She had to ask for more mayonnaise as there was barely any on from kitchen. The potato salad is n based with pickle relish. All tasted good. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich that came with a very slight amount of dijon-honey sauce. My side was collard greens cooked well but lacked some spicing, a little bland. All in all it was an ok meal but service was slow, and it was not busy. Will not stop here again when in area. read more

When we travel from St Louis to the OBX of North Carolina, we normally have lunch at Surry Seafood on the river near Surry, Virginia on our second day. This time, we wanted dome of the Virginia Runner peanuts form Virginia Diner in Wakefield. We have long been customers of Virginia Diner for these great peanuts and have ordered them as gifts for friends and family for over 20 years. We decided it made sense to have lunch there on this trip. Unfortunately, we will not be doing this again. The peanuts remain on our preferred list, but this won't be a place for a return lunch. Our food was mediocre, to say the least. Ms T ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich. This is deboned fried chicken. You have a choice of fried chicken breast or what we assumed would be dark meat. Ms T specifically did not order the breast meat but that is what she received and it was dried out. This was not a good sandwich. I ordered a pulled pork platter which was also disappointing. I, perhaps wrongly, assumed this would be smoked, barbecued pork. The best description would be crock-pot pork with barbecue sauce. It had never seen a smoker. I guess I have been spoiled by the delicious Eastern Carolina barbecue, this just did not cut it. They have a buffet and I suspect that would have been a much better choice. So our rating is for our meal, off the menu. You may have a different experience with the buffet. read more

They buy directly from the farmers, roast and package on site you find that they are tastier and much cheaper. About five dollars cheaper for slightly larger medium tin. As for today coming back home from Williamsburg decided to get some peanuts from Wakefield. I stopped by diner to get a sandwich to carry out. I also fainted when the cashier said $19.80 for a ham sandwich!!! This is a ham sandwich on regular sized sandwich bread. Not a sub or over stuffed ny style. Came with side. Fries looked and tasted like fries from a Arby's drive thru. Ordered just mayo and tomato. Received also no mayo tomato and lettuce. All of old staff is gone. This is THE iconic diner you have to go to. Even if you don't traverse 460 regularly, it is WELL worth the drive from Richmond, Hampton Roads OR even a detour from 95. This was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for a reason-this is the epitome of good ole Southern cuisine. Their Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits with a dessert of Peanut Pie is by far my favorite. The service is ALWAYS warm and prompt. The feel of the restaurant is like... that small hometown diner that you know all the servers at or that small place you go regularly-even if it's just a quick one time stop. I ate here for lunch one day. This restaurant is well known in southern Virginia and I hadn't been for a good 15-20 years, so it was nice to go again. I was looking forward to some good old fashioned southern food and in particular, Virginia ham. This restaurant wasn't bad, but I can't honestly say it lives up to its reputation. When you walk in, you find yourself in the store, which has lots of different kinds of peanuts, which are probably good; I wouldn't know. Unlike the store across the street, they don't give out free samples. To the left of that is the restaurant. They have a buffet, which looked alright, for about $20/person. I was surprised to see you can't order a plate of Virginia/Smithfield ham off the menu. You could get VA ham biscuits as an appetizer or you could get it as part of a combination plate, which I ordered. I also got pulled pork bbq and 2 sides (sweet potatoes), but I only received the one side, which turned out to be ok. It also came with hush puppies. The sweet potatoes were great and the ham was good. The bbq was a bit dry and I wish it had come on a bun. We wanted to know what was the big talk about this spot. My son and I, are always chasing places that have great fried chicken, and they didn't disappoint. Place was extremely packed, but we didn't have to wait long to be seated. Place is deceivingly big, very clean, and inviting. This is also a buffet style, but can order from the menu as well. I ordered the fried chicken meal (not a fan of the carrot soufflé). Kids had burgers, mom had a shrimp dinner, and the hubs had the biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious! I stopped in Wednesday afternoon for lunch and the place was almost empty. I was seated immediately with extremely friendly service. There were many things on the menu. I wanted to try but ended up having an open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and green beans. The green beans were your average canned beans and the gravy was the institutional type but I was very happy that the mashed potatoes were real. The bread was a single piece of Texas style toast, but the star of the show was definitely the turkey! It was so nice NOT to have deli slices from the local grocery store on top of white bread. I don't know if it was smoked in house, but it was definitely sliced up on the premises. I would love to come back to try some more items off the menu. read more

We made a road trip to this little piece of history for Mothers' Day. There were about 13 of us, but even several more showed up. It was a buffet of course of which didn't really tickle my toes. The selection, I felt, was inadequate. It was really rather limited. Fried chicken, roast beef, mac'n cheese, collards, green beans, roasted potatoes that weren't quite cooked, deviled eggs, and a couple other nondescript options that didn't even look appetizing. I can't even remember what they offered for dessert but it was very limited. I do remember the peach cobbler. It sat around so long that the crust had turned to mush and wasn't tasteful. It was a great idea for the family to gather for something other than a funeral. If nothing else we truly enjoyed our communion and gathering that we really didn't care about the food. Went out for a ride on the bike and decided to stop for dinner. We did the buffet and let me tell you everything was amazing!!! The fried chicken was seasoned well, had crispy skin and juicy meat!! I am not a big fan of liver but their liver gravy was amazing!!! Make sure to get some of the Carrot casserole!!! The servers were friendly and attentive.
