    Peanut Pie
    Jeff H.

While driving by we seen the sign for world famous peanut pie, so we decided to get a slice to go. The staff were friendly, fast and efficient. The pie however was a bit disappointing. It was like a pecan pie, swapping out for peanuts. The flavor was very good, however the pie filling was scarce and texture was peanut brittle. The plastic fork AND knife would not cut it. We finally had to pick it up and eat it with our hands, a messy task to say the least. As a chef, and foodie, I definitely can make this 5 star worthy and for that it was worth the stop.

    Carrot soufflé in Brunswick stew

Ambience... Walked into this pleasant looking restaurant on a Sunday afternoon, and it was fairly busy for the middle of the afternoon There were plenty of servers walking through the floor There were two hostesses at the hostess station when you came in The food was excellent. I had a carrot soufflé and a bowl of Brunswick stew... I just came in wanting a snack as I was passing through town to go back to Richmond. The service was not good. No one had a smile on their face my server sauntered over to me and was very casual and not significantly attentive I noticed all the locals got their coffee cups refilled, but I never did and I didn't ask. I wanted to see if she would do it without me asking. I had to wait an long time for my food, which was a simple order. I did a lot of observing while I was waiting... there was no hustle existent in this place not that I expected too much of a hustle because it was southern comfort food, establishment however they do need to step up their game and treat everyone the same

No trip through town is complete without a stop at VA Diner. Service was very slow. Food is always incredible. Took a long time just to get our check after our meal. I'd drive way out of my way just for the amazing Mac and cheese!

Hot Open-Faced Roast Beef Sandwich with Candied Yams
    Amy M.

We stopped by on a snowy Saturday night after we had been driving most of the day and we were cold and hungry. We pulled up at 6:13pm when they normally close at 7 and we wanted to grab something to go so we wouldn't keep them, but they insisted we sit down and order, which we were actually really thankful for. They had a $20 AYCE buffet that they were about to start breaking down, it was filled with things like fried chicken and a chocolate/vanilla pudding and other stuff. It looked good, but we didn't want to keep them from breaking it down, so we ordered off the menu. I ordered the open faced roast beef sandwich that comes with mashed potatoes and gravy, a biscuit, and I ordered the carrot soufflé. My little brother ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and candied yams and hush puppies. I LOVED the gravy. It is a beef gravy that was not too salty but was so flavorful. Pair that with what is probably the best mashed potatoes I have ever had... YES! The roast beef was so tender and topped with more of that delicious gravy. The carrot soufflé was pretty good, not as sweet as the one I used to love at (*shows my age*) Piccadilly. The biscuits were just a classic biscuit, perfect for dunking in the potatoes and gravy. The meatloaf was pretty darn good and again, covered in that delicious gravy. The yams were good too, really cinnamon and sugary. The hush puppies were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and delicious. This place opens up into a cute little shop that sells Virginia Diner peanuts and such, which is a pretty big deal around these parts, judging by how many shops I see selling them. The restaurant looks like a classic cafeteria/diner. Clean floors, ample space to walk, and plenty of friendly people. I will definitely be by again (and again and again) for more of that delicious food.

    Virginia Country Ham Biscuits

This diner was a great experience. Server was nice food came quick with no issues to bring up. Below is what was ordered and beneath that what we got from the shop. We went in early December so the Ambiance was nice with the Christmas tree and holiday music. I would recommend anyone to stop by if in the area. -2 pc fried chicken with onion rings - breading on both the chicken and onion rings was very thin but crispy. The fried chicken is probably one of the juiciest fried chickens I have ever had -Virginia Country Ham Biscuits (appetizer) - the biscuits were extremely salty. We had to eat the ham separately and could not finish the biscuits - hush puppies - they were good slightly sweet and has more of a corn taste than an onion taste like others we have tried. - sweet tea - nice and sweet - peanut pie - the star of the show. Less gooey than a pecan pie but in my opinion better. From the shop - chocolate covered peanuts - really good - salted roasted peanuts - also really good

Everything about this place was a hit and a miss. Great staff, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Tiny and uncomfortable chairs crammed too many into the area. The food followed the same pattern of a hit and a miss. I ordered the south BLT with fries. The BLT was great, fried green tomatoes were a nice touch. The fries were cold and from a bag. I recognize my favorite brand anywhere! Spouse ordered the chili dogs - the dogs were smoked with a toasted bun and gooey cheese. The chili leaned too heavily into the ketchup and tasted like it came from a can. The tots also came from a bag and were cold. Son got the country fried chicken with potato salad and onion rings. The onion rings looked homemade and were tasty. I can't speak on the rest because of the dairy. We grabbed some cookies on the way out. Peanut butter, lemon blueberry, and salted caramel. This is where they shine. The cookies were fantastic. Overall impression is that this is a sold food spot if overpriced. It's typical diner fare that should be cheaper. I suspect they've cashed in on their Diners, Drive ins, and Dives publicity to price gouge. Not sure I'll return because $80 for the amount of food we ordered was excessive. Hence the three star rating.

Baked chicken. Deviled Eggs. Corn casserole. Potatoes

The service is super friendly! They have a full menu, as well as a hot bar. Best baked chicken I've had (honestly) and the peach cobbler was to die for. They also have some stuff you can buy on the shelf. Great diner and atmosphere. I wish they had more dessert options !

I went here on a busy Sunday , my server was nice but, I think she was very over whelmed and just couldn't keep up , it was just myself and I think she just wasn't as attentive but besides that the food was really good ! Best chicken I've had in a very long time , The look of the diner itself was nostalgic and I like that . The good food is worth stopping again.

The Diner's ham biscuits and Waldorf salad are the best part of any travel day. January''s excellent service helped me get back on the road to the beach quickly.

Pulled Pork lunch with collards and slaw

When we travel from St Louis to the OBX of North Carolina, we normally have lunch at Surry Seafood on the river near Surry, Virginia on our second day. This time, we wanted dome of the Virginia Runner peanuts form Virginia Diner in Wakefield. We have long been customers of Virginia Diner for these great peanuts and have ordered them as gifts for friends and family for over 20 years. We decided it made sense to have lunch there on this trip. Unfortunately, we will not be doing this again. The peanuts remain on our preferred list, but this won't be a place for a return lunch. Our food was mediocre, to say the least. Ms T ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich. This is deboned fried chicken. You have a choice of fried chicken breast or what we assumed would be dark meat. Ms T specifically did not order the breast meat but that is what she received and it was dried out. This was not a good sandwich. I ordered a pulled pork platter which was also disappointing. I, perhaps wrongly, assumed this would be smoked, barbecued pork. The best description would be crock-pot pork with barbecue sauce. It had never seen a smoker. I guess I have been spoiled by the delicious Eastern Carolina barbecue, this just did not cut it. They have a buffet and I suspect that would have been a much better choice. So our rating is for our meal, off the menu. You may have a different experience with the buffet.

    Chicken and dumplings

Food is amazing!!! Tastes like it's home cooked by your grandma!!! Great service! We will be returning.

    Diner's Favorite Apple Pie

This is THE iconic diner you have to go to. Even if you don't traverse 460 regularly, it is WELL worth the drive from Richmond, Hampton Roads OR even a detour from 95. This was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for a reason-this is the epitome of good ole Southern cuisine. Their Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits with a dessert of Peanut Pie is by far my favorite. The service is ALWAYS warm and prompt. The feel of the restaurant is like... that small hometown diner that you know all the servers at or that small place you go regularly-even if it's just a quick one time stop. Trust me-you need to go here!

Combination plate with ham and pulled pork BBQ
    Mark A.

I ate here for lunch one day. This restaurant is well known in southern Virginia and I hadn't been for a good 15-20 years, so it was nice to go again. I was looking forward to some good old fashioned southern food and in particular, Virginia ham. This restaurant wasn't bad, but I can't honestly say it lives up to its reputation. When you walk in, you find yourself in the store, which has lots of different kinds of peanuts, which are probably good; I wouldn't know. Unlike the store across the street, they don't give out free samples. To the left of that is the restaurant. They have a buffet, which looked alright, for about $20/person. I was surprised to see you can't order a plate of Virginia/Smithfield ham off the menu. You could get VA ham biscuits as an appetizer or you could get it as part of a combination plate, which I ordered. I also got pulled pork bbq and 2 sides (sweet potatoes), but I only received the one side, which turned out to be ok. It also came with hush puppies. The sweet potatoes were great and the ham was good. The bbq was a bit dry and I wish it had come on a bun. Service was alright; after seeing how much food I got I decided not to ask about my second side. Overall, the restaurant is fine, but it's not outstanding or anything and struggles to live up to the hype. I'd go here again if I was in the area, but probably wouldn't make a point of going here.

Nice ambience and service impeccable. Food, not so much, mushy and tasteless, and expensive for what was on offer for Mother's Day buffet.

I was sitting in the parking lot of a large chain breakfast pulled up Yelp to see what I might be missing. Glad wasn't lazy...15 mins later I was in the parking lot for 185! If you haven't been to 185 on Little Florida Road in Poquoson, you are seriously missing out. This charming, family-owned neighborhood gem is everything a great local restaurant should be and then some. The moment I walked through the door, I felt it. You're not just a customer here; you're a guest. The welcome was immediate and genuine and set the tone for the whole experience before I even sat down. I ordered the brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries, and wow, it delivered. I was surprised the blackberry chipotle sauce worked BERY WELL! The brisket was tender, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Paired with perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries, it was the kind of meal that sticks with you long after you leave. This isn't reheated, thrown-together food, you can taste the love and craft in every bite. It was like Woman Power this morning with all ladies from front to back. Their whole vibe was awesome from the front of the house to the back. I have to give a very special shoutout to my waitress, Tiffany... she was absolutely AWESOME. Attentive, personable, and full of good energy, she made the whole experience even better. The kind of server who makes you feel like you're dining with a friend. Looks like 185 was ranked #87 on Yelp's Top 100 Restaurants in 2023, and after my visit, I completely understand why. The owners obviously had a beautiful vision and it is being executed incredibly...to my benefit today! Five stars, without question. When I am back in the area....I'll be back, and I'm bringing my wife will tell everyone I know.

It was clearly a local favourite and there was quickly a lineup with people willing and expecting to wait. The service was quick and friendly. The food was good home cooked meals and came out quickly. I had brisket scramble and it was delicious. It needed the sweet compote to balance the richness. My wife had the biscuits with gravy and eggs were good. There was lots of sausage in the country gravy. The cheese grits were tasty. Overall the food was very good and a solid experience. Since I live with a chef who cooks this quality of food often, I probably wouldn't drive here, however if we were in the area I'd definitely stop here and try other items as well.

I was back in town for Easter weekend and stopped by Monday evening to catch up with a friend. We arrived around 5 PM, and the bar was already starting to fill up. The bartender was friendly and attentive, but as it got more crowded, it was clear she could've used some extra help. We started with the crab dip, which was fresh, hot, and really tasty. I hadn't been in a while, so I was surprised by how extensive the menu is now. I ended up ordering the smashed burger--it was flavorful, with quality beef on fresh bread, topped with bacon and onions. My only note is that I wish they had asked how I wanted it cooked--medium well would've been perfect. My friend ordered the Philly and said it was good as well. Both portions were generous, and by the time we left, the place was getting pretty busy, though it never felt too loud or overwhelming. Overall, it was a solid visit, and I'd definitely come back next time I'm in town.

My husband and I thought the appetizer sampler sounded good and would give us a good idea of their food. The crab cakes with the wonton was not good and the crab dip hardly had any crab in it. The ham biscuits were okay and really the only dish that was as good was the bang bang shrimp. Also even though our waitress was very friendly she hardly checked on us and we had to wait a long time to get our check. The only thing going for this place is the view.
