My wife and I were passing through Waverly, Virginia recently and saw signs along the road for the Virginia Dinner. We decided to stop for dinner. The first surprise is their buffet. We didn't see any mention of it on the signs and so was not expecting a restaurant with a buffet. We looked it over and though it looked pretty good, the $20 price tag seemed a bit much for what they offered. Fortunately, they also offer a full menu which we chose instead. My wife and I both ordered their Country Fried Steak. Though it took a while to get our drinks, the food came out in a timely fashion, and everything was delicious. My wife ordered Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens for her two side dishes. I ordered mashed potatoes w/gravy and green beans for my sides. After tasting her Mac and Cheese, my wife insisted that I taste them too. She was right! They were some of the best we've ever had. Similarly, my mashed potatoes - typically a pretty ordinary dish - were phenomenal. The portions were also a decent size. The only negative aspect about the who meal was that the Country Fried Steak itself was only warm. It was very tasty and tender but just not hot like the other dishes. If it had been, I would have undoubtedly given Virginia Diner five stars. Though we don't have a need to return to Waverly, I can certainly see us driving the hour or so back for another delicious meal at Virginia Diner. read more

On our way home from Virginia Beach today we stop by the famous Virginia Diner for lunch! Virginia's highway system took shape during the 1920s as automobile ownership expanded rapidly. State Route 52 was established in 1928 to connect Suffolk with Prince George County. In 1933, this road became part of the new U.S. 460 from Roanoke to the Chesapeake Bay. The highway was later extended to St. Louis, Missouri, but its western terminus was eventually fixed at Frankfort, Kentucky. To accommodate travelers' needs, entrepreneurs opened gas stations, motels, and cafes along the roadside. Among these was the Virginia Diner, which D'Earcy and Laura Davis established here in 1929 inside a refurbished Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad car. Growing up in Virginia, I've heard about Virginia Diner for as long as I can remember. I've always associated it with their famous peanut products cashews, and all kinds of flavored peanuts. So, walking in, I had high expectations. To my surprise, they had even more exclusive peanut flavors than I knew existed. That alone was impressive. I visited with a large family group about 18-20 people we had already prepaid for the buffet. I later learned you can also order from the regular menu, which is good to know for future visits. The buffet had several dishes that made my country-bumpkin heart happy. I really enjoyed the beets, macaroni and cheese, and greens because the flavors I haven't had in a while. However, some other items could've been a bit more elevated. It's also been years since I've been to a buffet, and the overall style did give off a more old-timey vibe, which may appeal to some but felt a bit dated for me. One major highlight was the service. Our waitress handled our large group beautifully from helping us cut our cake and serve ice cream to making sure everyone had what they needed. Her warmth and attentiveness truly made the experience memorable. Overall, I'm glad I finally visited Virginia Diner, but the old-fashioned buffet style isn't quite my speed. Still, for fans of Southern comfort food and nostalgia, it's worth checking out at least once. read more

While driving by we seen the sign for world famous peanut pie, so we decided to get a slice to go. The staff were friendly, fast and efficient. The pie however was a bit disappointing. It was like a pecan pie, swapping out for peanuts. The flavor was very good, however the pie filling was scarce and texture was peanut brittle. The plastic fork AND knife would not cut it. We finally had to pick it up and eat it with our hands, a messy task to say the least. As a chef, and foodie, I definitely can make this 5 star worthy and for that it was worth the stop. read more

Walked into this pleasant looking restaurant on a Sunday afternoon, and it was fairly busy for the middle of the afternoon There were plenty of servers walking through the floor There were two hostesses at the hostess station when you came in The food was excellent. We pulled up at 6:13pm when they normally close at 7 and we wanted to grab something to go so we wouldn't keep them, but they insisted we sit down and order, which we were actually really thankful for. They had a $20 AYCE buffet that they were about to start breaking down, it was filled with things like fried chicken and a chocolate/vanilla pudding and other stuff. It looked good, but we didn't want to keep them from breaking it down, so we ordered off the menu. I ordered the open faced roast beef sandwich that comes with mashed potatoes and gravy, a biscuit, and I ordered the carrot soufflé. My little brother ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and candied yams and hush puppies. I LOVED the gravy. It is a beef gravy that was not too salty but was so flavorful. Pair that with what is probably the best mashed potatoes I have ever had... YES! The roast beef was so tender and topped with more of that delicious gravy. The carrot soufflé was pretty good, not as sweet as the one I used to love at (*shows my age*) Piccadilly. The biscuits were just a classic biscuit, perfect for dunking in the potatoes and gravy. The meatloaf was pretty darn good and again, covered in that delicious gravy. The yams were good too, really cinnamon and sugary. The hush puppies were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and delicious. This place opens up into a cute little shop that sells Virginia Diner peanuts and such, which is a pretty big deal around these parts, judging by how many shops I see selling them. The restaurant looks like a classic cafeteria/diner. Clean floors, ample space to walk, and plenty of friendly people. We went in early December so the Ambiance was nice with the Christmas tree and holiday music. I would recommend anyone to stop by if in the area. -2 pc fried chicken with onion rings - breading on both the chicken and onion rings was very thin but crispy. The fried chicken is probably one of the juiciest fried chickens I have ever had -Virginia Country Ham Biscuits (appetizer) - the biscuits were extremely salty. We had to eat the ham separately and could not finish the biscuits - hush puppies - they were good slightly sweet and has more of a corn taste than an onion taste like others we have tried. - sweet tea - nice and sweet - peanut pie - the star of the show. Everything about this place was a hit and a miss. Great staff, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Tiny and uncomfortable chairs crammed too many into the area. The food followed the same pattern of a hit and a miss. I ordered the south BLT with fries. The BLT was great, fried green tomatoes were a nice touch. The fries were cold and from a bag. I recognize my favorite brand anywhere! Spouse ordered the chili dogs - the dogs were smoked with a toasted bun and gooey cheese. The chili leaned too heavily into the ketchup and tasted like it came from a can. The tots also came from a bag and were cold. Son got the country fried chicken with potato salad and onion rings. The onion rings looked homemade and were tasty. I can't speak on the rest because of the dairy. We grabbed some cookies on the way out. Peanut butter, lemon blueberry, and salted caramel. This is where they shine. The cookies were fantastic. Overall impression is that this is a sold food spot if overpriced. It's typical diner fare that should be cheaper. I suspect they've cashed in on their Diners, Drive ins, and Dives publicity to price gouge. Not sure I'll return because $80 for the amount of food we ordered was excessive. This place is ok. As other reviewers have expressed, it has changed over years. We had stopped here approx. 12 years ago and we can see how it has expanded, refreshed and taken on more of a retail business. It does not feel as hometown as before. The southern driven menu has something for all. My wife ordered the BLT with potato salad which also includes a pickle spear. She had to ask for more mayonnaise as there was barely any on from kitchen. The potato salad is n based with pickle relish. All tasted good. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich that came with a very slight amount of dijon-honey sauce. My side was collard greens cooked well but lacked some spicing, a little bland. All in all it was an ok meal but service was slow, and it was not busy. Will not stop here again when in area. read more

Never again by life long customer.. Today's visit later in review. I stopped buying peanuts from the diner years ago because of the price and quality. Would still buy peanut turtles but stopped because they were very disappointing the last several times I did. If you want peanuts stop at the Wakefield peanut co down the street about a mile. They buy directly from the farmers, roast and package on site you find that they are tastier and much cheaper. About five dollars cheaper for slightly larger medium tin. As for today coming back home from Williamsburg decided to get some peanuts from Wakefield. I stopped by diner to get a sandwich to carry out. I also fainted when the cashier said $19.80 for a ham sandwich!!! This is a ham sandwich on regular sized sandwich bread. Not a sub or over stuffed ny style. Came with side. Fries looked and tasted like fries from a Arby's drive thru. Ordered just mayo and tomato. Received also no mayo tomato and lettuce. All of old staff is gone. When we travel from St Louis to the OBX of North Carolina, we normally have lunch at Surry Seafood on the river near Surry, Virginia on our second day. This time, we wanted dome of the Virginia Runner peanuts form Virginia Diner in Wakefield. We have long been customers of Virginia Diner for these great peanuts and have ordered them as gifts for friends and family for over 20 years. We decided it made sense to have lunch there on this trip. Unfortunately, we will not be doing this again. The peanuts remain on our preferred list, but this won't be a place for a return lunch. Our food was mediocre, to say the least. Ms T ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich. This is deboned fried chicken. You have a choice of fried chicken breast or what we assumed would be dark meat. Ms T specifically did not order the breast meat but that is what she received and it was dried out. This was not a good sandwich. I ordered a pulled pork platter which was also disappointing. I, perhaps wrongly, assumed this would be smoked, barbecued pork. The best description would be crock-pot pork with barbecue sauce. It had never seen a smoker. I guess I have been spoiled by the delicious Eastern Carolina barbecue, this just did not cut it. They have a buffet and I suspect that would have been a much better choice. This is THE iconic diner you have to go to. Even if you don't traverse 460 regularly, it is WELL worth the drive from Richmond, Hampton Roads OR even a detour from 95. This was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for a reason-this is the epitome of good ole Southern cuisine. Their Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits with a dessert of Peanut Pie is by far my favorite. When you walk in, you find yourself in the store, which has lots of different kinds of peanuts, which are probably good; I wouldn't know. Unlike the store across the street, they don't give out free samples. To the left of that is the restaurant. They have a buffet, which looked alright, for about $20/person. I was surprised to see you can't order a plate of Virginia/Smithfield ham off the menu. You could get VA ham biscuits as an appetizer or you could get it as part of a combination plate, which I ordered. I also got pulled pork bbq and 2 sides (sweet potatoes), but I only received the one side, which turned out to be ok. It also came with hush puppies. The sweet potatoes were great and the ham was good. The bbq was a bit dry and I wish it had come on a bun. Service was alright; after seeing how much food I got I decided not to ask about my second side. Overall, the restaurant is fine, but it's not outstanding or anything and struggles to live up to the hype. I stopped in Wednesday afternoon for lunch and the place was almost empty. I was seated immediately with extremely friendly service. There were many things on the menu. I wanted to try but ended up having an open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and green beans. The green beans were your average canned beans and the gravy was the institutional type but I was very happy that the mashed potatoes were real. The bread was a single piece of Texas style toast, but the star of the show was definitely the turkey! It was so nice NOT to have deli slices from the local grocery store on top of white bread. We made a road trip to this little piece of history for Mothers' Day. There were about 13 of us, but even several more showed up. It was a buffet of course of which didn't really tickle my toes. The selection, I felt, was inadequate. It was really rather limited. Fried chicken, roast beef, mac'n cheese, collards, green beans, roasted potatoes that weren't quite cooked, deviled eggs, and a couple other nondescript options that didn't even look appetizing. Arrived about 3:30 PM on a recent Thursday for a late lunch early dinner. The dining room was quite empty 3 other tables as we were seated. This was our first physical visit to the Diner before we have enjoyed Virginia Diner food at various catered events. It took our server some time (more than 5 minutes) to notice and greet us. She (Jevonne) seemed to be in a rush wanting us to order beverages and food together when we were still looking over the extensive menu. When asked for beverages she placed rolled flatware and extra napkins on the table a left to retrieve the drinks. Upon returning she sloshed beverage onto the table and used the extra napkins to clean it up. No apologies. We ordered explaining it was our first visit. Twenty minutes passed without checking on us again or updating us to any kind of kitchen situation or stopping to refill beverages. When the meals arrived they were well presented. "Amazing Chicken Tenders with hush puppies, green beans, and Mac & cheese. Crispy Fried Pork Loin with mashed red skinned potatoes, collards, biscuit. Our beverages were refilled. Everything looked delicious and the first bite of the crispy pork loin with caramelized onions and brown gravy was very tasty. However it was just warm not hot not as if it had just come from a deep fryer. There's two reasons I didn't immediately send this meal back there is no quick easy fix except to microwave. Which would have caused the crispy coating to no longer be crispy or wait another extended time for the meal to be completely remade. And I was hungry. The second reason I had a guest that I really didn't want to make uncomfortable he doesn't like added attention. So quietly I ate two of the three slices of the pork. But by the time I got to the third the gravy was cold and congealing. My dinner partner seemed to enjoy his meal. Btw at no point during this time did the server return to check on us. Even to refill our empty, again glasses. When I was finally able to see the server again get her attention I ask for a box for the remaining pork loin. Even then no comment on how we enjoyed our meal. She brought the box and check and wished us a nice day. Once in the car I found out my guests meal hadn't been any hotter than my own. This is especially frustrating because at no time did the number of tables exceed what was there when we arrived. One left and one arrived. And I noted 2 other servers besides ours as well as a hostess and a cashier. This should have been a pleasant experience. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had been out for a pleasant day driving. Apparently this is a Virginia institution... I grew up heading to beach in summers, but rarely did we take route 460, so this was a first for us. I must say from a southern cooking perspective this place certainly lives up to its reputation. No, I'm not talking about refined southern cooking - I mean simple, home cooked country style food. They type you'd expect grandma to make. First, opted for the ham biscuit sliders which were divine - a nice bite size portion for those who don't want full size biscuits. Next, I had the chicken and waffles with maple bacon sauce. Personally I prefer just simple maple syrup, but this was plenty good as served. My suggest would be to mix with some syrupy to get a little more sweetness. Service was fine - slow in the way that most places should be in the countryside (normal speed). We came as the Sunday church crowds gathered, so the place was mighty busy. They did have a buffet option which will be great for those in a hurry or with small kids /picky eaters. There's a store front selling Virginia peanut products and the back is the restaurant, quite large space nothing fancy just a typical diner set up. There's buffet option and also a la cart, buffet has a lot of options as well I would go for buffet next time as it has less wait time. Good selections from a la cart menu, and they made to order so it took a while if you have time to wait. The portion of the food are huge. None of us could finish what we ordered. Food is delicious. Everything was good and the Bacon was very good and properly cooked which isn't always the case at buffets. The service was also ok with the waitress usually being attentive but also forgetting some things I asked for. We used to live in Suffolk. Driving down 460 made the trip less complicated. I have driven passed VA Diner many times, stopped once for peanuts. Today, we drove from Richmond for Sunday dinner. It was just like being back in my grandma's kitchen table. We started with the ham biscuit. It was delicious and the pickle truly topped it off. The chicken golden, crisp and perfectly seasoned. The collard greens were good as was the spoon bread. The service was good and the server was attentive. My friend for the buffet and they had gloves, which was perfect to cut down on potential Covid exposure. He thoroughly enjoyed the buffet. My only complaint was the floor. It was a little slippery and needed sweeping from food particles. They were good about wiping down the tables clean but the floor was a mess. This place is such a find! I came here on a business dinner after a long day counting inventory at one of our warehouses. I was told the food here is consistently good and BOY were they right. The fried chicken was very tender and full of flavor. I definitely wanted more than what I had. The mashed potatoes were creamy and an awesome pairing to the chicken regardless of both having their own gravy. THE CARROT SOUFFLE TASTS LIKE BIRTHDAY CAKE. Of course we are here because we saw this place on the food network. It was about 40 mins away from home so we took this lazy Saturday and went for the drive. It was pretty good. We got the fried seafood platter and the combination platter. It was pretty flavorful. I wasn't a fan of the spoon bread or the pulled pork. I don't like a pork that has such a vinegar taste but it wasn't horrible... just not for me. I absolutely loved the ham biscuits and the candied yams. The seafood flavor was out of this world delicious. The breading was crispy and "chefs kiss" delicious. Horrible excuse for a restaurant 45 minute wait for a literal dump. Food is just standard diner crap. Staff is retarded overall not worth a 2 minute wait I'd give them a zero if I could read more
